Module Apollo 13 Damage - View of the damaged Apollo 13 Service Module - View of the control module of Apollo 13 Damage. 17/04/1970. This view of the damaged Apollo 13 Service Module (SM) was photographed from the Lunar Module/Command Module following SM jettisoning. As seen here, an entire SM panel was blown away by the apparent explosion of oxygen tank number two located in Sector 4 of the SM. Two of the three fuel cells are visible just forward (above) the heavily damaged area. Three fuel cells, two oxygen tanks, and two hydrogen tanks are located in Sector 4. The damaged area is located above the S - Band high gain antenna. Nearest the camera is the Service Propulsion System (SPS) engine and nozzle. The damage to the SM caused the Apollo 13 crewmen to use the Lunar Module (LM) as a “” lifeboat.” The Lunar Module “” Aquarius”” was jettisoned just prior to Earth reentry by the Command Module “” Odyssey”””. Apr 17 1970
The control module of Apollo 15 seen from the LEM - Apollo 15 Command module - The control module of Apollo 15 seen from the LEM. 30/07/1971. A view of the Apollo 15 Command and Service Modules (CSM) in lunar orbit as photographed from the Lunar Module (LM) just after rendezvous. The lunar nearside is in the background. This view is looking southeast into the Sea of Fertility. The crater Taruntius is at the right center edge of the picture. The Service Module's (SM) Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) bay, which holds eight orbital science experiments, is clearly visible. While astronauts David R. Scott, commander, and James B. Irwin, lunar module pilot, descended in the LM to explore the Hadley - Apennine area of the moon, astronaut Alfred M. Worden, command module pilot, remained with the CSM in lunar orbit. 30 July 1971
Apollo 17: release of R. Evans - Apollo 17: Ronald E. Evans EVA - Extravehicular release of Ronald Evans to recover cameras and cameras. 17/12/1972. Astronaut Ronald E. Evans is photographed performing extravehicular activity during the Apollo 17 spacecraft's trans - earth coast. During his EVA, Evans, command module pilot, retrieved film cassettes from the lunar sounder, mapping camera and panoramic camera. The cylindrical object at Evans' left side is the mapping camera cassette. The total time for the trans - earth EVA was one hour, seven minutes, 18 seconds, starting at ground elapsed time of 257:25 (2:28 p.m.) and ending at G.E.T. of 258:42 (3:35 p.m.) on Sunday, December 17, 1972

Apollo 16: the LEM en approche du module de commande - Apollo 16: LM ascent stage approaching CSM - Le LEM en approche du module de commande d'Apollo 16. 23/04/1972. (23 April 1972) The ascent stage of the Apollo 16 Lunar Module (LM) approaches the Command and Service Modules (CSM) during rendezvous, with a contrasting background of darkness and the Sea of Fertility (Mare Fecundatatis). Taken from the CSM, the photo shows the aft side of the LM during a yaw maneuver. Note the buckled thermal panels. Messier and Messier A (right center) are among the most readily identifiable features on the surface below
Phobos mission approaching Phobos - The control module in approach to the Phobos satellite. The command module, now free of the larger Phobos mission rocket, begins a close approach to Phobos. With an average diameter of less than 12 miles, irregularly shaped Phobos has a very weak gravitational field making it relatively easy for the command module to come very close without being drawn all the way to its surface. The goal is to come close enough to permit space-suited astrogeologists equipped with personal manned maneuvering units (MMUS) to act as mini-spaceships themselves and descend to the surface. On the surface of Mars to the right can be seen Elysium Planitia and the volcano Albor Tholus
Mission to Phobos - Phobos mission ready for departure - A spaceship assemblies in Earth orbit is ready to depart to Phobos, one of Mars's satellites. This ship consists of several fuel tanks and an Orion-type space capsule with three astronauts on board. No landing gear is required because the mass of Phobos is so low that this satellite can be approached by astronauts in extravehicular exit. A complete rocket system for delivering a crew of three to Mars' moon Phobos and returning them to the Earth. The vast bulk of the rocket is propellant divided into stages that are each released in turn as the mission progresses. On the far right are the crew accomodations and an attached Orion class command module. No dedicated lander is required as Phobos' mass is so low that it could be easily approached by the command module and explored by suited astrogeologists in Manned Maneuvering Units (MMUS)
Apollo 11: the LEM leaves the Moon - Apollo 11: Lunar module is leaving Moon - The lunar module, with Armstrong and Aldrin, approaching the control module. 21/07/1969. The Apollo 11 Lunar Module ascent stage, with Astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. aboard, is photographed from the Command and Service Modules in lunar orbit. Astronaut Michael Collins, command module pilot, remained with the Command/Service Module in lunar orbit while Armstrong and Aldrin explored the Moon. The Lunar Module is approaching from below. The coordinates of the center of the lunar terrain seen below are 102 degrees east longitude and 1 degree north latitude

Swigert Jr (back). 17 April 1970. A water level view of the Apollo 13 recovery operations in the South Pacific Ocean. The three astronauts as seen egressing their spacecraft. John L. Swigert Jr. (back to camera), command module pilot, is already in the life raft. Fred W. Haise Jr., lunar module pilot, facing camera, is stepping into the life raft. James A. Lovell Jr., commander, is leaving the spacecraft in the background. A United States Navy underwater demolition team assists with the recovery operations. The three crewmembers were picked up by helicopter and flown to the prime recovery ship, USS Iwo Jima. The Apollo 13 Command Module (CM) splashed down at 12:07:44 p.m. (CST), April 17, 1970, to conclude safely a perilous space flight. Though the Apollo lunar landing mission was canceled, a disastrous loss of three astronauts was averted
Apollo 16: exit of T. Mattingly and C. Duke - Apollo 16: EVA astronauts - Thomas Mattingly (on the right, assisted by Charles Duke, from the back) takes the cameras and cameras in the service module Apollo 16. 25/04/1972. Astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly II, command module pilot, performs an Extravehicular Activity (EVA) during the Apollo 16 trans - Earth coast. Mattingly is assisted by astronaut Charles M. Duke, Jr., lunar module pilot. Mattingly inspected the SIM Bay or Service Module (SM), and retrieved film from the Mapping and Panoramic Cameras. Mattingly is wearing the helmet of astronaut John W. Young, commander. The helmet's lunar EVA visor assembly helped protect Mattingly's eyes from the bright Sun. This view is a frame from motion picture film exposed by a 16 mm Maurer camera. 25 April 1972
Apollo 11: the Lem joins the control module - Apollo 11: the Lunar Module approaches CSM for docking - The lunar module, with its edge Armstrong and Aldrin, approaching the control module. The Moon is visible on the horizon. 21/07/1969. The Apollo 11 Lunar Module ascent stage, with Astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. aboard, is photographed from the Command and Service Modules (CSM) during rendezvous in lunar orbit. The Lunar Module (LM) was making its docking approach to the CSM. Astronaut Michael Collins remained with the CSM in lunar orbit while the other two crewmen explored the lunar surface. The large, dark - colored area in the background is Smhyth's Sea, centered at 85 degrees east longitude and 2 degrees south latitude on the lunar surface (nearside). This view looks west. The Earth rises above the lunar horizon
Astronauts on Phobos - Touching Phobos - Astronauts from the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), an autonomous space chair, uncover the surface of the Phobos satellite. An astrogeologist in a space suit and manned maneuvering unit (MMU) makes the first human contact with Mars' asteroid-like moon Phobos. On the upper right is another free-ranging astrogeologist descending towards the surface. On the left at a distance of several hundred yards is an Orion-class command module. The command module has ferried the astrogeologists to Phobos from their living accommodations in Mars orbit. At 5,800 miles away Mars itself looms large, nearly filling the entire sky. Phobos' gravity is so low that its surface could be explored like scuba divers floating over the ocean's bottom

Apollo 11: launch center - Apollo 11 launch room - Mission apollo 11: the launch room of the Kennedy space center before decolling. Engineers within the Launch Control Center's Firing Room # 1 monitor an overall test of the Apollo 11 space vehicle. The 363 foot high space vehicle is scheduled to roll out of the Vehicle Assembly Building's High Bay 3 to Launch Pad A no earlier than May 31, 1969. Apollo 11, which will be piloted by astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., will be the first of several manned lunar landing planned by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Armstrong and Aldrin will descend in a lunar module spacecraft to the moon's surfaces while Collins orbits overhead in a command module
Back to the Moon: the MPCV module in lunar orbit - Artist view - The MPCV spacecraft in lunar orbit - The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) orbit around the Moon. This capsule should be able to take a crew of six astronauts to the moon and could be used to take men to Mars. The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) is a spacecraft project currently being developed by Lockheed Martin for NASA. Based on specifications and tests already performed for the Orion spacecraft. It was announced by NASA on 24 May 2011. The next generation Deep Space Vehicle's (DSV) crew capsule, aka Command Module, will be similar to the Apollo Command Module in shape, however it will be somewhat larger, with enough room - depending upon the mission - for as many as 6 astronauts versus Apollo's three. The DSV would also supplement its electrical power with two arrays of solar voltaics which would aid in extending its mission endurance beyond Apollo's 14 day limit
