Constellations
Constellation of the Dolphin - Constellation of Delphinus - Constellations of the Dolphin and Altair. On the top right, the constellation of the Fleche, on the left, the Dolphin; on the bottom right, the brilliant star Altair in the Eagle. Delphinus the Dolphin looks remarkably like the creature it represents. Delphinus is a small constellation of Greek origin, but despite its diminutive size it is quite easy to find. The bright star Altair in neighboring Aquila is probably the best guide. Delphinus' brightest star, Rotanev (ss Del) is of magnitude 4, and its name honors the astronomer Nicolaus Venator (Rotonov backwards). The next brightest star in Delphinus is Sualocin, which at first glance appears English, but is Nicolaus spelled backwards. He was assistant to the rather more famous Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi. The main stars of Sagitta are also well seen here

Interacting galaxies ZW II 96 - Interacting galaxies ZW II 96 - The galaxy ZW II 96 is located about 500 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Dolphin. This system consists of interacting galaxies shows an important star formation. This is a system of merging galaxies with a bizarre shape. Powerful young starburst regions hang as long threadlike structures between the main galaxy cores. The system almost qualifies as an ultra - luminous system, but has not yet reached the late stage of coalescence that is the norm for most ultra - luminous systems. ZW II 96 is located in the constellation of Delphinus, the Dolphin, about 500 million light - years away from Earth

Globular cluster NGC 6934 - Globular Cluster NGC 6934 - NGC 6934 is located about 50,000 light years away from Earth in the constellation Dolphin. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This bright spray of stars in the small constellation of Delphinus (the Dolphin) is the globular cluster NGC 6934. Globular clusters are large balls of (typically) a few hundred thousand ancient stars that exist on the edges of galaxies. Lying 50 000 light - years from Earth, in the outer reaches of our Milky Way galaxy, NGC 6934 is home to some of the most distant stars still to be part of our galactic system - - in a sense, it is a far - flung suburb to the Milky Way's city centre. This picture was taken with the Wide Field Channel of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys
Constellations of the Little Horse, Dauphin, Fleche and Petite Fox - Constellation of Equuleus and Vulpecula - At the top right, the constellation of the Little Fox, below, the Fleche, on the left, the Dolphin; at the bottom left, the Little Horse. Equuleus (the Little Horse or colt) is a small and undistinguished constellation located about 10 degrees north of the celestial equator. It is the second smallest constellation in the sky: only Crux is smaller. It contains no bright stars, so, unlike Crux, it is difficult to find, though Delphinus is a useful guide. There is little of astronomical interest here that is accessible to small telescopes. Vulpecula, the Fox, first appears in Johannes Hevelius' atlas of 1690 and was originally called Vulpecula Cum Anser, the fox with goose, but the bird has flown and the fox is hardly obvious. The constellation crosses part of the northern Milky Way and lies just south of Cygnus. The main stars of Sagitta are also well seen here

Globular cluster NGC 7006 - Globular cluster NGC 7006 - The globular cluster NGC 7006 is located in the constellation Dauphin about 135,000 years old - light from Earth. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a compact and remote globular star cluster that lies in one of the smallest constellations in the night sky, Delphinus (The Dolphin). Due to its modest size, great distance and relatively low brightness, NGC 7006 is often ignored by amateur astronomers. But even remote globular clusters such as this one appear bright and clear when imaged by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. NGC 7006 resides in the outskirts of the Milky Way. It is about 135,000 light - years away, five times the distance between the Sun and the centre of the galaxy, and it is part of the galactic halo. This roughly spherical region of the Milky Way is made up of dark matter, gas and sparsely distributed stellar clusters. Like other remote globular clusters, NGC 7006 provides important clues that help astronomers to understand how stars formed and assembled in the halo. The cluster now pictured by Hubble has a very eccentric orbit indicating that it may have formed independently, in a small galaxy outside our own that was then captured by the Milky Way. Although NGC 7006 is very distant for a Milky Way globular cluster, it is much closer than the many faint galaxies that can be seen in the background of this image. Each of these faint smudges is probably accompanied by many globular clusters similar to NGC 7006 that are too faint to be seen even by Hubble. This image was taken using the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys, in a combination of visible and near - infrared light. The field of view is a little over 3 by 3 arcminutes
