Bennet Langton (1737-1801). A three-quarter-length portrait of an elderly man, seated to the right, books behind; arms top left. Breda was in London from 1787 to 1796, where he came under the influence of Reynolds, changing his style from a greyish palette to the warmer and more robust colours of Reynolds' latest phase. The series at Gunby are clearly among the earlier painted after his arrival in England, in a paler almost monochrome technique, curiously reminiscent of Reynolds' portraits of the 1760's.
