Image description

Jan Griffier the younger (fl.1738-1773). Oil painting on canvas, View of Windsor Castle from the north, by Jan Griffier the younger (fl.1735-1773), signed and dated J.Griffier pinx 1735. Landscape with Windsor Castle on left towering over countryside with cottages and figures, Eton at the right. The view is taken from the East Terrace, (left) looking down the North Terrace towards the Curfew Tower (1227-30) at the far end. The 12th century Round Tower, which was heightened in 1830-1, can be seen on its mound, and there is a distant view of the top of St George’s Chapel (1475-1525) which can just be seen above the walls to the right. The tower on the corner of the junction of the East and North Terraces is the Prince of Wales’s Tower (12th century but reconstructed in 1824-8). The large block on the left of the Round Tower is the site of what is now the Private Apartments. The 15th century Eton Chapel is the dominant building on the far right with the school buildings on the left of it. Label on frame 'Windsor W. Griffier Jnr 1690-1750'. Anglesey Abbey, Cambridgeshire (Accredited Museum)
