This horse wears the kind of heavy padded collar used when pulling equipment, like the plough on the right of the picture. It is having a shoe replaced by the blacksmith at Hexham Bridge End, Northumberland. Iron wheel bands outside the smithy show some of the smith's other work. The boy sitting in a wheelbarrow is wearing a Northumberland bonnet. Ralph Hedley was one of the most popular and well-respected local artists of his day;
