Horsehead Nebula (B33) in Orion - Horsehead Nebula (B33) in Orion - The horse's head nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark nebula located in front of the IC 434 nebula about 1500 years - light from Earth in the constellation Orion. At the bottom left, the nebula NGC 2024 with just above the star Alnitak, a supergeant star belonging to the Orion Baudrier. Towards the center of the image, a reflexion nebula, NGC 2023. The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33 in nebula IC 434) is a dark nebula in the Orion constellation at approximately 1,500 light years from Earth. On bottom left of the image is the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) with star Alnitak which belongs to the Belt of Orion; in the center, the reflection nebula NGC 2023. Orion Constellation - Constellation of Orion - Orion the Hunter is one of the most familar and best known constellations. There is extensive and varied mythology about this beautiful collection of stars, but the most common Greek legend has Orion as a giant huntsman, and he appears in this role in Homer's Odyssey. The most persistent legend seems to be that he died from the sting of a giant scorpion, which was placed in the sky so that Orion sets as the Scorpius rises, in an eternal chase across the sky. The momorable outline of the Hunter proudly bestrides the celestial equator and is equally visible from both hemispheres. The distinctive, equally spaced line of stars of Orion's Belt are more or less on the equator and are framed by quartet of bright and colourful stars. More subtle is Orions short sword, hanging from his belt. Under dark skies or in binoculars the central 'star' is distinctly misty. This is the famous Orion nebula, one of many well known telescopic objects that fill this part of the sky. The westernmost Orion Belt star delta Orionis (Minkata) is about a quarter of a degree of arc south of the celestial equator and all three belt stars are within 2 degrees of it. This means they rise and set due east or west of the observer and track the equator across the sky during the night, tracing straight lines in star trail photographs. Note that Orion is upside down as seen from the southern hemisphere, where it is often called 'the saucepan', with the Belt stars forming the base and the Sword stars the handle

The constellation Orion.
Detail nebuleuse de la Tete de Cheval by HST - The Horsehead, also known as Barnard 33, is a cold, dark cloud of gas and dust, silhouetted against the bright nebula, IC 434. The bright area at the top left edge is a young star still embedded in its nursery of gas and dust. Radiation from this hot star is eroding its gaseous birthplace. A massive star located outside Hubble's view is, in a similar fashion, sculpting the top of the Horsehead itself. The Horsehead, located in the constellation Orion, is a cousin of the famous pillars of dust and gas known as the Eagle nebula. Both tower - like nebulae are cocoons of young stars. The Horsehead nebula lies just south of the bright star Zeta Orionis, which is easily visible to the unaided eye as the left - hand star in the line of three that form Orion's Belt. Amateur astronomers often use the Horsehead as a test of their observing skills - it is known as one of the more difficult objects to observe visually with an amateur - sized telescope. This image was composed by the Hubble Heritage Team, which superimposed Hubble data onto ground - based data taken at the 0.9 - meter telescope at the National Science Foundation's Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson, Arizona
The constellations Orion and Taurus.
Nebulas in Orion - Nebulas in Orion - At the top of the picture are visible the three stars forming Orion's Belt (or Baudrier), with the dark nebula of the horse's head (IC434 - B33). Further down, the large Orion nebula (M42) vast star-forming region. Enveloping these nebulae, part of Barnard's loop is visible on the left of the image. At the bottom right, the supergiant star Rigel with on its right the nebula of the witch's head (IC 2118). Wide field image around the Orion nebula. Top left are the three stars forming the Orion belt with the horsehead nebula. At left is a part of Barnard's loop; bottom right is the bright supergiant star Rigel wit the Witch Head nebula (IC 2118) to its right
Orion's belt rising over the lights of Coonabarabran - Photographic pose of several hours on the constellation Orion. From Siding Spring Mountain, Australia, there is a clear view to the eastern horizon, directly over the small town of Coonabarabran about 26 km from the telescopes. Here we see the three distinctive trails of Orion's belt rising above the town. The rightmost star of the line of three is Minkata, and it is within a degree of the celestial equator. The point on the horizon where it rises is very close to due east and similarly its setting point is almost exactly due west. Minkata has long been an important navigation star. and its trail is a straight line, while either side of Orion's belt, towards the celestial poles, the star trails become increasingly curved.
Nebula M78 in Orion - M78 nebula in Orion - The reflexion nebula M78 (NGC 2068) is located about 1300 years - light from Earth and extends over 4 years - light. Image obtained with the 2.2 meter MPG/ESO telescope at the La Silla Observatory. Messier 78 is a fine example of a reflection nebula. The ultraviolet radiation from the stars that illuminate it is not intense enough to ionise the gas to make it glow - - its dust particles simply reflect the starlight that falls on them. Despite this, Messier 78 can easily be observed with a small telescope, being one of the brightest reflection nebulae in the sky. It lies about 1350 light - years away in the constellation of Orion (The Hunter) and can be found northeast of the easternmost star of Orion's belt. Two bright stars, HD 38563A and HD 38563B, are the main powerhouses behind Messier 78. However, the nebula is home to many more stars, including a collection of about 45 low mass, young stars (less than 10 million years old) in which the cores are still too cool for hydrogen fusion to start, known as T Tauri stars. Studying T Tauri stars is important for understanding the early stages of star formation and how planetary systems are created. Remarkably, this complex of nebulae has also changed significantly in the last ten years. In February 2004 the experienced amateur observer Jay McNeil took an image of this region with a 75 mm telescope and was surprised to see a bright nebula - - the prominent fan shaped feature near the bottom of this picture - - where nothing was seen on most earlier images. This object is now known as McNeil's Nebula and it appears to be a highly variable reflection nebula around a young star. Image taken with the MPG/ESO 2.2 - metre telescope at the La Silla Observatory
Star trainees above an old chapel - Star trails above an old chapel - Photographic pose on the constellation of Orion above the chapel of Languidou (Finistere). Orion is located exactly on Celestial Ecuador. The stars above the belt draw concave circular arches surrounding the north celestial pole while the stars under the belt draw convex arches surrounding the south celestial pole. 21/10/2007 Long exposure on the Orion constellation above the old chapel of Languidou (Finistere, France). Orion is located on the celestial equator. The stars above the Orion's Belt draw some concave arcs circling the North celestial Pole while the stars under the Belt draw some convex arcs circling the South celestial Pole. 21/10/200
Nebulae of the horse's head and M42 in Orion - Horsead nebula and Orion nebula - Dark Nebula of the horse's head (IC434 - B33). On the right, the large Orion nebula (M42) is a vast region of star formation. This large complex of nebulosity is located about 1,500 light years away in Orion. The Orion complex is a gigantic stellar nursery where stars are forming out of the dust and gas in the region. Young energetic stars excite the gas in the region ionizing it and causing it to glow in the hydrogen - alpha and oxygen III emission lines. The brightest star in the photo at left at magnitude 1.8 is Alnilam, the middle star of the three distinctive stars in the belt of Orion. At the bottom is the Flame, NGC 2024, and the dark nebula B33, the Horsehead Nebula. Top right is a patch of blue reflection nebulosity NGC 1973 - 4 - 5 and the beautiful Orion Nebula, M 42
Horsehead Nebula (IC 434) in Orion - Horsehead Nebula (B33) in Orion - The horse's head nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark nebula located in front of the IC 434 emitting nebula about 1500 years - light from Earth in the constellation Orion. At the bottom left, the nebula NGC 2024 with just above the star Alnitak, a supergiant star belonging to the Baudrier of Orion. Towards the center of the image, a reflexion nebula, NGC 2023. This distinctive red emission nebula (IC 434) is the result of radiation from sigma Orionis interacting with the surface of a dusty cloud of gas from which projects the dark shape of the head of a horse. Sigma is the second brightest star in the picture and is at about the same distance from the Sun as the nebula. The brightest star here is zeta Orionis, easily visible to the unaided eye as the easternmost star in the line of three which form Orion's Belt. Alnitak (Zeta Orionis) is a supergiant star with a brightness 35,000 times greater than the Sun. Its mass is 20 times the solar mass. Partly obscured by the glare of zeta is the curious yellowish nebula NGC 2024, whose energy comes from stars hidden in the dark lane, while other nebulae simply reflect the light of embedded hot stars and appear blue. All these objects are about 1500 light years distant
Nebulae NGC 2024 and Horse's Head - Flame nebula and the Horsehead Nebula - This image shows the nebula NGC 2024 (left), the small nebula NGC 2023 (right middle) and the nebula of the horse's head (top right). The bright star on the top left is the star Alnitak. Visible infrared composite image. This image shows the spectacular star - forming region known as the Flame Nebula, or NGC 2024, in the constellation of Orion (the Hunter) and its surroundings. The view also includes the glow of the reflection nebula NGC 2023, middle right, and the ghostly outline of the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) towards the upper right. The bright bluish star top left is one of the three bright stars forming the Belt of Orion, Alnitak. The image was created from VISTA in the near - infrared part of the spectrum and optical datas

This infrared image shows the nebula NGC 2024 (left), the small nebula NGC 2023 (right middle) and the nebula of the horse's head (top right). The bright star on the top left is the star Alnitak. This image, the first to be released publicly from VISTA, the world's largest survey telescope, shows the spectacular star - forming region known as the Flame Nebula, or NGC 2024, in the constellation of Orion (the Hunter) and its surroundings. In views of this evocative object in visible light the core of the nebula is completely hidden behind obscuring dust, but in this VISTA view, taken in infrared light, the cluster of very young stars at the object's heart is revealed. The wide - field VISTA view also includes the glow of the reflection nebula NGC 2023, middle right, and the ghostly outline of the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) towards the upper right. The bright bluish star top left is one of the three bright stars forming the Belt of Orion, Alnitak. The image was created from VISTA images taken through J, H and Ks filters in the near - infrared part of the spectrum. The image shows about half the area of the full VISTA field and is about 40 x 50 arcminutes in extent. The total exposure time was 14 minutes
Nebulae of the horse's head and M42 in Orion - Horsead nebula and Orion nebula - Dark Nebula of the horse's head (IC434 - B33). Further down, the large Orion nebula (M42) vast star-forming region. The brightest star in the photo at upper right at magnitude 1.8 is Alnilam, the middle star of the three distinctive stars in the belt of Orion. At the left is the Flame, NGC 2024, and below it is dark nebula B33, the Horsehead Nebula. Below is a patch of blue reflection nebulosity NGC 1973 - 4 - 5 and bottom is the beautiful Orion Nebula, M 42

Constellation of Eridan - Constellation of Eridanus - View from the Hyadas to the Hydra Male. In the center is the great constellation of Eridan. The brightest stars visible here are Rigel, Sirius, Canopus and Achernar. In the center of image is the Eridanus constellation. Brightest stars visible are Rigel (top in Orion); Sirius (top left); Canopus (below) and Achernar (bottom center). Eridanus (the Celestial River) is very well named; since it winds its way over an enormous area of the sky. It is the 6th largest constellation (almost 1140 square degrees) and wanders over a huge range of Declination. The river runs from close to the celestial equator (which runs through Orion's Belt) to its brightest star Achernar (a Eri; from the English for 'river's end'); which is at 57* south declination
Horsehead nebula and Orion nebula - Orion nebula and horsehead nebula - On the left, the dark nebula of the horse's head (IC434 - B33). On the right, the large Orion nebula (M42) is a vast region of star formation. These nebulae are located 1500 years of light from Earth. Mosaic of four images obtained with a FSQ 106 bezel, a 50 cm telescope and CCD STL11000 camera, with an H alpha filter. Total installation of 50 hours. Barnard's loop and constellation Orion - Barnard's loop and Orion constellation - The constellation Orion and its nebulae. The main stars of this constellation are two supergeants, Betelgeuse (red) on the top left and Rigel (blue) on the bottom right. In the center of the constellation are the three stars forming Orion's Belt (or Baldrier) and the dark nebula of the horse's head (IC434 - B33). Further down, the large Orion nebula (M42) vast star-forming region. Wrapping these nebulae, Barnard's loop, a circle-arch nebula that would come from the explosion of a supernova more than two million years ago. The Orion constellation and its nebulae. The two Orion's bright stars are both supergiant stars: Betelgeuse (a red one) and Rigel (blue one). The center of this constellation is the Orion Belt with the Horsehead nebula (IC 434 - B33). Lower, the great Orion nebula, M42, a large star forming region. Also visible on this image, the Barnard's loop, a very faint nebula. This is composite mosaic image assembled from many hours of data including hydrogen alpha filtered exposure

Horse's Head Nebula - The Horsehead nebula in Orion - The Horse's Head Nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark nebula located in front of the IC 434 emission nebula at about 1500 years - light of the Earth in the constellation Orion. Lower left is the reflexion nebula, NGC 2023. The Horsehead nebula is located in the constellation of Orion, slightly below the left - most star of the three that form the Hunter's belt. It is part of a vast molecular cloud of dust and gas that includes the Great Orion Nebula and extends throughout the entire constellation as well. Here we see the Horsehead as it appeared 1,500 years ago, due to distance and the time it takes light to travel

The bright complex of dust and gas below the Horsehead reflects the light given off by the bright star near it's center and is one of the brightest examples of reflection nebulae in the northern sky. The central star is surrounded with a thin shell of hydrogen that glows red by emitting it's own light in a rare example of a unique process called vibrational fluorescence
Nebula of the horse's head in Orion (IC 434) - The Horsehead is located in the constellation of Orion, slightly below the left - most star of the three that form the Hunter's belt. It is part of a vast molecular cloud of dust and gas that includes the Great Orion Nebula and extends throughout the entire constellation as well. It was first seen through photographs taken by E. Pickering in January 1900. The red coloration is the result of glowing hydrogen gas located primarily behind the formation. Here, we see the Horsehead as it appeared 1,500 years ago, due to distance and the time it takes light to travel. The bright complex of dust and gas below the Horsehead reflects the light given off by the bright star near it's center and is one of the brightest examples of reflection nebulae in the northern sky. The central star is surrounded with a thin shell of hydrogen that glows red by emitting it's own light in a rare example of a unique process called vibrational fluorescence. There are also an number of dark clumps of gas that represent stellar nurseries containing one or more new stars hidden within. The Horsehead can be challenging to see visually, but under very dark skies, many observers report that it can be glimpsed in silhouette with a ten inch telescope and an H - beta filter that accentuates the background hydrogen glow
