As planned, the spacecraft will reach its asteroid target in 2018 and return a sample to Earth in 2023. Hayabusa2 is an asteroid sample return mission operated by the Japanese space agency, JAXA. Launched in December 2014 Hayabusa 2 is expected to arrive at the asteroid 162173 Ryugu in July 2018, survey the asteroid for a year and a half, depart in December 2019, and return to Earth in December 2020
Rover Curiosity on Mars - Curiosity Mars rover selfie - Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), named Curiosity, is a NASA rover exploring the surface of Mars. This self-portrait is a composite of images taken by the robot on August 5, 2015. This low-angle self-portrait of Nasa's Curiosity Mars rover shows the vehicle at the site from which it reached down to drill into a rock target called “” Buckskin”” on lower Mount Sharp. The selfie combines several component images taken by Curiosity's Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) on Aug. 5, 2015, during the 1,065th Martian day, or sol, of the rover's work on Mars. For scale, the rover's wheels are 20 inches (50 centimeters) in diameter and about 16 inches (40 centimeters) wide

Cassini - Huygens and Saturn - Cassini spacecraft at Saturn - Artist's view of the Cassini probe around Saturn. The Huygens European module is attached to the probe. The Cassini-Huygens probe was launched on 15 October 1997 and has been placed in orbit around Saturn since 1 July 2004. The great Cassini orbiter, with the Huygens probe still in place, prepares to slip through the ring plane of Saturn. Cassini - Huygens was launched from the earth on october 15 1997 and is orbiting Saturn system from july 1st 2004
Mars Express probe - Artist's View - Mars Express artist's view - The European probe Mars Express leaves the Earth propelled by the upper floor Fregat. This probe was launched on 2 June 2003 and began its observations in early 2004. Mars Express left Earth for Mars on 2 June 2003 when the positions of the two planets made for the shortest possible route, a condition that occurs once every twenty - six months. The european spaceprobe began its March observations in 2004. Mars Express was mounted on the Fregat upper stage. Most of the energy needed to propel Mars Express from Earth to Mars is provided by the four - stage Soyuz/Fregat launcher. The Fregat upper stage separated from the spacecraft after placed it on a Mars - bound trajectory
Mission ExoMars 2016 - Artist view - ExoMars Mission - Artist view - Artist view of the European mission ExoMars 2016 with the Shiaparelli landing module embarks on the TGO (Trace Gas Orbiter) probe. Artist's impression depicting the ExoMars 2016 entry, descent and landing demonstrator module, named Schiaparelli, on the Trace Gas Orbiter, and heading for Mars. TGO will be launched in 2016 with Schiaparelli, the entry, descent and landing demonstrator module. It will search for evidence of methane and other atmospheric gases that could be signatures of active biological or geological processes on Mars. TGO will also serve as a communications relay for the rover and surface science platform that will be launched in 2018

The Dawn probe near Ceres - Artist's view - Dawn approaches Ceres - Artist view of the Dawn probe near the dwarf planet Ceres. In February 2015 the unmanned Dawn spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at the dwarf planet Ceres. The 65 foot long, 2.5 ton probe was launched from the Earth in 2007, passed March in 2009, and went into orbit around the protoplanet Vesta in July 2011 where it stayed until September 2012. Once in orbit around Ceres, Dawn is expected to operate for about a year making observations of this largest object in the asteroid belt. In this image Dawn's three xenon electrostatic ion thrusters can be seen emitting ionized xenon's characteristic blue/magenta glow, gently propelling the probe toward Ceres. While the ion engines have relatively low specific thrust (about equal to the weight of a few sheets of paper), they can operate continuously for long periods making efficient use of the approximately 1,000 pounds of xenon propellant onboard. The wing - like solar arrays produce about 1,300 watts for probe's propulsion and other electrical systems. While no close - up observations of yet been made of Ceres itself, here it is rendered as appearing similar to a much smaller version of the Earth's Moon, heavily cratered with the addition of surface water ice and hypothesized plumes of ice crystals from water geysers on its surface

Rover Curiosity on Mars - Curiosity Mars rover selfie: Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), named Curiosity, is a NASA rover exploring the surface of Mars. This self-portrait is a composite of a dozen images taken by the robot on October 6, 2015. This self-portrait of Nasa's Curiosity Mars rover shows the vehicle at the “” Big Sky”” site, where its drill collected the mission's fifth taste of Mount Sharp. The scene combines dozens of images taken during the 1,126th Martian day, or sol, of Curiosity's work on Mars (Oct. 6, 2015, PDT), by the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera at the end of the rover's robotic arm. The rock drilled at this site is sandstone in the Stimson geological unit inside Gale Crater. The view is centered toward the west-northwest. It does not include the rover's robotic arm, though the shadow of the arm is visible on the ground. Wrist motions and turret rotations on the arm allowed MAHLI to acquire the mosaic's component images. The arm was positioned out of the shot in the images, or portions of images, that were used in this mosaic. This portrait of the rover was designed to show the Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument atop the rover appearing level. This causes the horizon to appear to tilt toward the left, but in reality it is fairly flat. For scale, the rod's wheels are 20 inches (50 centimeters) in diameter and about 16 inches (40 centimeters) wide. The drilled hole in the rock, appearing grey near the lower left corner of the image, is 0.63 inch (1.6 centimeters) in diameter

Artist's view of the New Horizons probe near Pluto - New Horizons over Pluto and Charon - Artist's view of the New Horizons probe near Pluto and its largest satellite Charon. The New Horizons probe was launched on 19 January 2006 to Jupiter, then Pluto and Charon, which it will reach in 2015 and Kuiper's objects in 2020. Nasa's New Horizons unmanned spacecraft over dwarf planet Pluto and its moon Charon. New Horizons has been en route to Pluto since its launch from Earth in 2006 and is scheduled to make its closest approach on 14 July 2015. New Horizons is about the size and shape of a grand piano and weighed 1,054 pounds at launch. The high - gain dish antenna is about 7 feet in diameter and is employed for communication with the Earth. In this image the New Horizons spacecraft is about 10,000 miles from Pluto (upper right), 22,000 miles from its largest moon Charon (upper left) and 2.97 billion miles from the Earth. Dominating this side of the spacecraft with an 8 inch aperture is the Long - Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI), a digital camera with a large telephoto telescope fortified to operate in the cold, hostile environs of deep space. At 90 days before closest approach to Pluto, Lorri's images will surpass the quality of the best Hubble Space Telescope images of Pluto. While little is known about Pluto's appearance, here this Kuiper belt dwarf planet is realized as a frozen world covered with various ices, hosting a thin atmosphere of nitrogen, methane and other hydrocarbons too possibly, with a significantly weathered surface as Pluto's 248 - year orbit alternately brings it closer then further from the warmth of the sun
Exploration of Titan - Illustration - Looking for life on Titan - An automatic probe explores a hydrocarbon marsh in search of traces of life. A robotic probe explores a frigid ethane lake on Titan. Like the European Space Agency's Huygens probe, this probe carries its own light source as the surface of Titan is only 0.1 percent as bright as the Earth's. Titan is host to a plethora of organic (carbon - based) compounds, hence this is one of the few places in the Solar System where life outside of the Earth may have evolved. In many ways, Titan resemble a frozen primordial Earth, though the greatest obstacle to Titan harboring life - - as we know it - - is the extreme cold. Even though all the chemical ingredients are present, Titan simply may not be warm enough to initiate the chemical reactions required for life. Perhaps sometime in the next decades such a mission to Titan will be a reality

The Cassini and Saturn probe - Cassini spacecraft at Saturn - Artist's view of the Cassini probe during its final dip into the atmosphere of Saturn on September 15, 2017. As depicted in this illustration, Cassini will plunge into Saturn's atmosphere on Sept 15, 2017. Using its attitude control thrusters, the spacecraft will work to keep its antenna pointed at Earth while it sends its final data, including the composition of Saturn's upper atmosphere. The atmospheric torque will quickly become stronger than what the thrusters can compensate for, and after that point, Cassini will begin to tumble. When this happens, its radio connection to Earth will be severed, ending the mission. Following loss of signal, the spacecraft will burn up like a meteor in Saturn's upper atmosphere.

Mars Science Laboratory - Artist View - Mars Science Laboratory - Artist view - Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), named Curiosity, is a NASA rover that will explore the surface of Mars from 2012 onwards. In this artist's view, Curiosity analyses the chemical composition of a Martian rock using the ChECAM instrument. This artist's concept depicts the rover Curiosity, of Nasa's Mars Science Laboratory mission, as it uses its Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument to investigate the composition of a rock surface. ChemCam fires laser pulses at a target and views the resulting spark with a telescope and spectrometers to identify chemical elements. The laser is actually in an invisible infrared wavelength, but is shown here as visible red light for purposes of illustration
Solar Orbiter - Solar Orbiter is a solar observation satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA) developed with the participation of NASA, which is scheduled to launch in February 2019 and begin observations around 2022. The main objective of this scientific mission is to study the processes behind the solar wind, the heliospheric magnetic field, the energetic solar particles and the magnetic field of the Sun. Esa's Solar Orbiter is set to provide new views of our star, in particular providing close-up observations of the Sun's poles. Following its launch in February 2019 and three-year journey using gravity swingbys at Earth and Venus, Solar Orbiter will operate from an elliptical orbit around the Sun. At its closest it will approach our star within 42 million kilometers, closer than planet Mercury. An artist's impression of Solar Orbiter in front of the stormy Sun is depicted here
