Mars - Illustration - Mars - Illustration - Artist's view of the planet Mars. The three volcanoes of Tharsis and Olympus Mons are visible on the left. In the centre is the great canyon Valles Marineris. A “” full””” Mars. In this image the massive volcano Olympus Mons is clearly visible upper left of center, while near center are the three Tharsis Montes volcanoes. All these volcanoes are believed to be extinct. To the right of the Tharsis Montes are the deep canyons of Valles Marineris, a meandering network of channels as long as the United States is wide. Mars has been known historically as a bright, reddish “” star”” in Earth's sky. The ruddy hue is due to the presence of iron oxide (i.e., rust) on the martian surface. Mars is often host to white clouds of water - ice crystals (like the high - altitude cirrus clouds on Earth) and experiences seasonal dust storms that can cover the entire planet

Volcanic ash cloud in Iceland - Volcanic ash cloud from Iceland - The volcanic ash plume caused by the eruption of the Eyjafjoell volcano (Eyjafjallajoekull) in Iceland seen by the Envisat satellite on 11 May 2010. A heavy plume of ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano is visible travelling over the Atlantic in this Envisat Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer image acquired on 11 May 2010. The narrow shape of the ash cloud indicates a lot of wind is blowing in a southerly direction towards the west of Ireland. Also visible, the area around the Hakla volcano (east of Eyjafjallajoekull) now appears black as the snow and ice that surrounded it in April have been completely covered by ash. The volcano has been emitting steam and ash since its recent eruptions began on 20 March
Nebulae IC 1283 - 84 and NGC 6589 - 90 in Sagittarius - Nebulosity in Sagittarius, NGC 6589 - 90 - These nebulae are located in Sagittarius at a distance of about 5900 light years from Earth. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Our view towards the centre of the Galaxy is obscured by extensive clouds of interstellar dust in the direction of the constellation of Sagittarius. The large - scale, patchy nature of the obscuration can be seen with the unaided eye and it is evident on smaller scales from the uneven distribution of background stars across this picture. Light from bright stars within the dust produces the two blue reflection nebulae (NGC 6589 and 6590), and these stars are members of a loose open cluster of stars, NGC 6595 (Sharpless 37) which is at a distance of about 5,900 light years. A large, almost transparent cloud of hydrogen, mixed with traces of dust, glows with a characteristic magenta hue over most of the field of view. This is known as IC 1283, 1284 and 4700 and is likely at a similar distance to NCC 6595
Open cluster of Pleiades seen in infrared - The Pleiades open cluster seen in infrared - Clouds of dust in the Pleiades cluster seen in infrared by the Spitzer space telescope. The Pleiades star cluster contains about 500 stars formed 100 million years ago. It is located 440 light years from Earth, in the constellation Taurus. The Pleiades, located more than 400 light - years away in the Taurus constellation, is a star cluster born when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth, about 100 million years ago. It is significantly younger than our 5 - billion - year - old sun. The brightest members of the cluster, also the highest - mass stars, are known in Greek mythology as two parents, Atlas and Pleione, and their seven daughters, Alcyone, Electra, Maia, Merope, Taygeta, Celaeno and Asterope. There are thousands of additional lower - mass members, including many stars like our sun. Some scientists believe that our sun grew up in a crowded region like the Pleiades, before migrating to its present, more isolated home. The infrared image from Spitzer highlights the filaments, colored yellow, green and red in this view, made up of dust associated with the cloud through which the cluster is traveling. The densest portion of the cloud appears in yellow and red, and the more diffuse outskirts are shown in green hues. One of the parent stars, Atlas, can be seen at the bottom left, while six of the sisters are visible at top. Additional stars in the cluster are sprinkled throughout the picture in blue
Galactic Center Region - The Galactic Center - The Galactic Center Region of the center of our galaxy seen the Chandra, Spitzer and Hubble satellites. The galactic center (Sagittarius A*) is located in the white area in the middle to the right of the image. In yellow, near-infrared images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope; in red, infrared images obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope; in blue and purple, X-ray observations obtained by the Chandra Space Telescope. Nasa's Great Observatories - the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory - have collaborated to produce an unprecedented image of the central region of our Milky Way galaxy. In this spectacular image, observations using infrared light and X-ray light see through the obscuring dust and reveal the intense activity near the galactic core. Note that the center of the galaxy is located within the bright white region to the right of and just below the middle of the image. The entire image width covers about one-half a degree, about the same angular width as the full moon. Each telescope's contribution is presented in a different color: - Yellow represents the near-infrared observations of Hubble. These observations outline the energetic regions where stars are being born as well as reveal hundreds of thousands of stars. - Red represents the infrared observations of Spitzer. The radiation and winds from stars create glowing dust clouds that exhibit complex structures from compact, spherical globules to long, stringy filaments. - Blue and violet represent the X-ray observations of Chandra. X-rays are emitted by gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions and by outflows from the supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center. The bright blue blob on the left side is emission from a double star system containing either a neutron star or a black hole. When these views are brought together, this composite image provides one of the most detailed

Elliptical Galaxy M110 (NGC 205) in Andromede - Elliptical galaxy M110 (NGC 205) in Andromeda - The elliptical galaxy M110, Andromede's satellite galaxy, is about the same distance from us as M31, about 2.9 million years - light. It is of type E6 “special” because it presents some unusual dark structures (probably dust clouds). M110 is the second small companion (along with M32) to our sister galaxy, M31, the Andromeda Nebula. It is classified as type E5 or E6, often with the additional “” p”” for peculiar because of the structure clearly visible in this short exposure image, which is probably due to dust clouds. Because of its small size, it is usually counted as a dwarf spheroidal rather than a normal elliptical

Galaxy NGC 891 in Andromede - Edge - on spiral galaxy NGC 891 in Andromeda - Spiral galaxy seen by the slice located at a distance of 10 million years - light.. This image obtained with the 2.5m Isaac Newton telescope of La Palma. If we could view the Milky Way from a distance of about 30 million light years it would look something like NGC 891. But galaxies that look like this are quite rare because the chance alignment of the thin disk of a spiral galaxy with our line of sight is unusual. A few degrees either side of its orientation and NGC 891 would be just another highly inclined spiral galaxy. From this unusual vantage point we can see in NGC 891 the surprising narrowness of the obscuring dust lane, a dark, slightly irregular band across the galaxy. We also see that it is yellowish, confirming that it is dust, which absorbs blue light, as in the Milky Way. Also similar to the Milky Way is the prominent central 'bulge' corresponding to the rich star clouds in Sagittarius. However, unlike the Milky Way, NGC 891 is relatively isolated, undisturbed by neighboring galaxies. If this was a distant view the Milky Way, the dust - lane would probably be distorted by interaction with the Magellanic Clouds, which would be prominent in the picture
Nebula Omega (M17) in Sagittarius - The Omega Nebula (M17) in the constellation Sagittarius - View of the nebula Omega (M17/NGC 6618) located in the constellation Sagittarius at a distance of 5700 light years. The Omega Nebula, Messier object 17 (M17), NGC 6618, in the constellation Sagittarius is a bright nebula, criss - crossed by clouds and lanes of opaque dust and gas. It is also known as the Swan Nebula and the Horseshoe Nebula. At a distance of 5700 light - years, M17 is also a source of radio noise

Nebula of the Eagle (IC 4703) in the Snake - detail - Star - birth in the Eagle nebula. - The Pillars of Creation “” is undoubtedly the most famous image realized by the Hubble space telescope, obtained in 1995. 20 years later, the same telescope rephotographed this region with more finesse. These cold gas columns are home to star embryos. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has revisited one of its most iconic and popular images: the Eagle Nebula's Pillars of Creation. This image shows the pillars as seen in visible light, capturing the multi - coloured glow of gas clouds, wispy tendrils of dark cosmic dust, and the rust - colored elephants trunks of the nebula's famous pillars. The dust and gas in the pillars is seared by the intense radiation from young stars and eroded by strong winds from massive nearby stars. With these new images comes better contrast and a clearer view for astronomers to study how the structure of the pillars is changing over time.

Spiral galaxy of Sombrero M104 in the Virgin - The Sombrero galaxy (M104) in Virgo - Image of the spiral galaxy M104 (Sombrero galaxy), located about 28 million years ago - light. Image obtained with the 3.9m Anglo - Australian Telescope from Siding Spring. The Sombrero, named after the broad - brimmed Mexican hat it superficially resembles, is probably the most famous galaxy in the sky. The light from this remarkable spiral system is dominated by the billions of old, faint stars that form the vast 'bulge' around its tiny hidden nucleus. Most spirals, including the Milky Way, have clouds of old, faint stars around their nuclei, but in M104 the galaxy's light is dominated by them. This effect is enhanced because disk of the galaxy is seen nearly edge - on and dust in its outer parts is in silhouette as it crosses the picture. The galaxy is about 28 million light years distant
Southern Crown Nebula - The CRA reflection nebula - R Coronae Australis is a region of star formations visible in the southern hemisphere. It is located about 500 light years away from Earth. On the right, the globular cluster NGC 6723, located 30 000 light years from Earth in Sagittarius. Image made with the 1.2m Telescope of Schmidt UK from Siding Spring. Corona Australis (the southern crown, CRA) is in the far southern sky but visible from the southern states of the USA. The constellation is small but distinctive. The conspicuous globular cluster NGC 6723 is at the western (right) edge of the photograph, but it is in Sagittarius, and is about 30,000 light years distant. Almost all the nebulosity here is starlight, reflected from minute grains of dust, some of which gather into darker condensations ('molecular clouds'), blotting out the background stars. Fainter features can be seen here. Shiny NGC 6726 - 27 near middle of image contains both a visual binary and a variable star. Other wispy nebulae in the western part of the dark cloud betray the presence of young, hidden stars
Andromede galaxy (M31) seen in X and infrared - Andromeda galaxy infrared and X - Ray composite - Andromede spiral galaxy seen in X-ray (blue) by the XMM - Newton space telescope and in infrared (orange) by the Herschel space telescope. This mosaic of the Andromeda spiral galaxy highlights explosive stars in its interior, and cooler, dusty stars forming in its many rings. The image is a combination of observations from the Herschel Space Observatory taken in infrared light (seen in orange hues), and the XMM - Newton telescope captured in X - rays (seen in blues). Herschel provides a detailed look at the cool clouds of star birth that line the galaxy's five concentric rings. Massive young stars are heating blankets of dust that surround them, causing them to glow in the longer - wavelength infrared light, known as far - infrared, that Herschel sees. In contrast, XMM - Newton is capturing what happens at the end of the lives of massive stars. It shows the high - energy X - rays that come from, among other objects, supernova explosions and massive dead stars rotating around companions. These X - ray sources are clustered in the center of the galaxy, where the most massive stars tend to form. Andromeda is our Milky Way galaxy's nearest large neighbor. It is located about 2.5 million light - years away and holds up to an estimated trillion stars. Our Milky Way is thought to contain about 200 billion to 400 billion stars
Galaxy of the Wheel of the Charette in the Sculptor - The Cartwheel Galaxy - The ring galaxy of the Wheel of the Charette is about 500 million years away - light from the Earth. It is surrounded by a ring of 150,000 years - light of diameter composed of young and very bright stars. This particular form is the result of a collision, probably with one of the two galaxies on the right. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in October 1994. A rare and spectacular head - on collision between two galaxies appears in this NASA Hubble Space Telescope true - color image of the Cartwheel Galaxy, located 500 million light - years away in the constellation Sculptor. The details of star birth resolved by Hubble provide an opportunity to study how extremely massive stars are born in large fragmented gas clouds. The striking ring - like feature is a direct result of a smaller intruder galaxy - - possibly one of two objects to the right of the ring - - that careened through the core of the host galaxy. Like a rock tossed into a lake, the collision sent a ripple of energy into space, plowing gas and dust in front of it. Expanding at 200,000 miles per hour, this cosmic tsunami leaves in its wake a firestorm of new star creation. Hubble resolves bright blue knots that are gigantic clusters of newborn stars and immense loops and bubbles blown into space by exploding stars (supernovae) going off like a string of firecrackers. The Cartwheel Galaxy presumably was a normal spiral galaxy like our Milky Way before the collision. This spiral structure is beginning to re - emerge, as seen in the faint arms or spokes between the outer ring and bulls - eye shaped nucleus. The ring contains at least several billion new stars that would not normally have been created in such a short time span and is so large (150,000 light - years across) our entire Milky Way Galaxy would fit inside. Hubble's new view does not solve the mystery as to which of the two small galaxies m

Dark stars and nebulae in Sagittarius and Ophiuchus - Dark Nebulae in Sagittarius and Scorpius - Dark nebulae on the edge of the Pipe nebula. This complex of dust clouds that block the light of the stars is located between the Sagittarius and the Scorpio, near the center of our lactee road. Also visible, the nebulae emitted from the Lagoon, Trifide, and Omega. Image obtained with Canon 20Da, 50 mm f/1.4, 6 x 5 min ISO 1600 poses. This amazing complex of dark nebulae and dust in Sagittarius and Ophiuchus lies near the central bulge of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Dark nebulae are non - luminous clouds of obscuring matter and dust which block the light from stars behind them. Many of the dark nebulae seen here are listed in E.E. Barnard's catalog of dark nebulae and are given a “” B” designation, such as B72, the Snake Nebula. Almost the entire complex of dark nebulae seen on the right hand side of the image make up the “Dark Horse and Rider””. The Pipe Nebula, Lynds Dark Nebula 1773, comprises the hind quarter and back leg of the Dark Horse, which is seen vertically in this image. B63 is the front leg, B270 is the Horse's head, and B276 is the Rider's head. The area is also filled with star clouds, bright emission nebulae such as M8 - the Lagoon Nebula, M20 - the Trifid Nebula, and M17 - the Omega Nebula. The small Sagittarius star cloud, M24, is at the upper left, and the large Sagittarius star cloud at lower left. The center of our galaxy lies near the bottom edge of the image. Image taken with a Canon 20Da DSLR, 50 mm f/1.4, and 6 x 5 min exposures at ISO 1600
