Uranus - true and false colors - Voyager 2 - Uranus in true and false colors - Images obtained by the Voyager 2 probe on January 19, 1986. On the left, the blue color is due to the presence of methane in the atmosphere of the planet; on the right, the same image seen in false colors. The axis of rotation of the planet is different from that of all other planets in the solar system. While for most planets this axis is almost vertical, for Uranus it is almost lying on the plane of its orbit. These two images of Uranus are shown here to reveal the pole rotation of the planet, as photographed by Voyager 2. The left is seen as the human eye would see, and the right isfalse color to reveal more intricate details

Les Dentelles du Cygne - Detail - NGC 6960 - Part of the Veil nebula - NGC 6960 - Part of the rest of the supernova of the Dentelles du Swan lies about 1500 years - light from the Earth. The bright star is 52 Cygnus, a star visible to the naked eye that is not associated with lace. Image in false colors obtained with a telescope measuring 40 cm in diameter through various filters that highlight the oxygen (in blue), and the hydrogen (in red). The Veil Nebula (NGC 6960) is part of a supernova remnant known as the Cygnus Loop. It is the shattered remains of one, and possibly two, supernovae that exploded less than 10,000 years ago in the direction of the constellation Cygnus, the Swan. At the time of the explosion, it would have been seen as a very bright star, rivaling the crescent Moon. The bright star at right, known as 52 Cygnus, is not associated with the supernova. Image taken with a 16 - inch telescope. Red is Hydrogen, Blue is Oxygen
Mimas, satellite of Saturn, seen by the Cassini probe on 13/02/2010 - Saturn's moon Mimas seen by Cassini spacecraft - February 13 2010 - The Mimas satellite seen in false colours by the Cassini probe on 13 February 2010 has a distance of 16,000 km from the satellite. Color differences reveal differences in terrain nature. Mimas is about 400 km in diameter. At the right centre is the large impact crater Herschel, 130 km wide. Subtle color differences on Saturn's moon Mimas are apparent in this false - color view of Herschel Crater captured by Nasa's Cassini spacecraft during its closest - ever flyby of that moon. The image shows terrain - dependent color variations, particularly the contrast between the bluish materials in and around Herschel Crater (130 kilometers, or 80 miles, wide) and the greenish cast on older, more heavily cratered terrain elsewhere. The origin of the color differences is not yet understood, but may be caused by subtle differences in the surface composition between the two terrains. Herschel Crater covers most of the bottom of this image. To create this false - color view, ultraviolet, green and infrared images were combined into a single picture that exaggerates the color differences of terrain on the moon. These data were combined with a high - resolution image taken in visible light to provide the high - resolution information from the clear - filter image and the color information from the ultraviolet, green and infrared filter images. The natural color of Mimas visible to the human eye may be a uniform gray or yellow color, but this mosaic has been contrast - enhanced and shows differences at other wavelengths of light. During its closest - ever flyby on Feb. 13, 2010, Cassini came within about 9,500 kilometers (5,900 miles) of Mimas. This view looks toward the northern part of the hemisphere of Mimas that leads in the moon's orbit around Saturn. Mimas is 396 kilometers (246 miles) across. North on Mimas is up

Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene in fake colors - NGC 3372 Carina nebula in narrow band - The nebula of the Carene is located about 8000 years - light from Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the massive star Eta Carinae in the centre of the nebula. Image obtained by the 1.2m Schmidt UK Telescope of Siding Spring through 3 different filters that highlight oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur. Although no bright naked - eye stars are associated with the Carina nebula now, 150 years ago there blazed forth here one of the most unusual and peculiar stars ever seen. The star is known as Eta Carinae and for a few months in 1843 it was the second or third brightest star in the sky. Since then it has faded and is today about 1000 times fainter than it was at its brightest as the nebula it created during its outburst has cooled and become opaque. The whole region around Eta Carinae is rich in hot stars of which Eta is an extreme example and it is their combined radiation that produces the spectacular Carina nebula that dominates this picture. The nebula and its peculiar star are about 8000 light years away
Richat structure - Mauritania - satellite view - Richat structure, Mauritania, seen by satellite - Richat structure is a geological formation of volcanic origin in Mauritania. This “eye” measures 50 km in diameter. This image is a combination of an image obtained by the Landsat satellite in 1987 and a radar image obtained from the Space Shuttle (SRTM) in 2000. The relief is exaggerated by about 6 times. The picture covers an area of 68 km by 112 km. This prominent circular feature, known as the Richat Structure, in the Sahara desert of Mauritania is often noted by astronauts because it forms a conspicuous 50 - kilometer - wide (30 - mile - wide) bull's - eye on the otherwise rather featureless expanse of the desert. Initially mistaken for a possible impact crater, it is now known to be an eroded circular anticline (structural dome) of layered sedimentary rocks. Extensive sand dunes occur in this region and the interaction of bedrock topography, wind, and moving sand is evident in this scene. Note especially how the dune field ends abruptly short of the cliffs at the far right as wind from the northeast (lower right) apparently funnels around the cliff point, sweeping clean areas near the base of the cliff. Note also the small isolated peak within the dune field. That peak captures some sand on its windward side, but mostly deflects the wind and sand around its sides, creating a sand - barren streak that continues far downwind. This view was generated from a Landsat satellite image in 1987 draped over an elevation model produced by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). The view uses a 6 - times vertical exaggeration to greatly enhance topographic expression. For vertical scale, note that the height of the mesa ridge in the back center of the view is about 285 meters (about 935 feet) tall. Colors of the scene were enhanced by use of a combination of visible and infrared bands, which helps to differentiate bedrock (browns), sand (yellow, so

Comete 17P/Holmes 29/10/2007 - Comet 17P/Holmes October 29 2007 - View of comet 17P/Holmes on October 29, 2007. On October 24, 2007, Comete 17P/Holmes suddenly increased luminosite and became visible to the naked eye. The false nucleus and inner coma of Comet 17P/Holmes is seen here in a composite exposures on 29 October 2007. Comet 17P/Holmes began a spectacular outburst in brightness on October 24th, brightening from 17th magnitude to 2.5th magnitude, an increase of more than 1 million times brighter to become a unaided - eye object in the constellation of Perseus
Saturn seen in infrared by Cassini spacecraft - Saturn seen in infrared by Cassini spacecraft - Composite image of Saturn in false colours obtained from infrared observations collected by the Cassini probe on 24 February 2007 at a distance of 1.58 million km from the planet. Flying over the unlit side of Saturn's rings, the Cassini spacecraft captures Saturn's glow, represented in brilliant shades of electric blue, sapphire and mint green, while the planet's shadow casts a wide net on the rings. This striking false - color mosaic was created from 25 images taken by Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer over a period of 13 hours, and captures Saturn in nighttime and daytime conditions. The visual and infrared mapping spectrometer acquires data simultaneously at 352 different wavelengths, or spectral channels. Data at wavelengths of 2.3, 3.0 and 5.1 microns were combined in the blue, green and red channels of a standard color image, respectively, to make this false - color mosaic. This image was acquired on Feb. 24, 2007, while the spacecraft was 1.58 million kilometers (1 million miles) from the planet and 34.6 degrees above the ring plane. The solar phase angle was 69.5 degrees. In this view, Cassini was looking down on the northern, unlit side of the rings, which are rendered visible by sunlight filtering through from the sunlit, southern face. On the night side (right side of image), with no sunlight, Saturn's own thermal radiation lights things up. This light at 5.1 microns wavelength (some seven times the longest wavelength visible to the human eye) is generated deep within Saturn, and works its way upward, eventually escaping into space. Thick clouds deep in the atmosphere block that light. An amazing array of dark streaks, spots, and globe - encircling bands is visible instead. Saturn's strong thermal glow at 5.1 microns even allows these deep clouds to be seen on portions of the dayside (left side), especially where overlying h

Nebula NGC 3372 in the Carene in false colours - NGC 3372 Carina nebula - The nebula of the Carene is located about 8000 years - light from the Earth. It is home to many hot stars, including the massive star Eta Carinae in the centre of the nebula. Top right is the cluster of stars NGC 3293. Image obtained from the 1.2m Schmidt UK telescope of Siding Spring.

Arabian desert seen by satellite 01/2016 - Eastern Desert - Egypt: Part of the Arabian desert in Egypt seen by Sentinel-2A satellite on 17 January 2016. The vegetation appears in red near the Nile. The Sentinel-2A satellite takes us over central-eastern Egypt with this image from 17 January. The image is dominated by arid desert - namely the Eastern Desert between the Nile River the Red Sea. The distinctive pattern of water erosion from rivers and streams is clearly visible as they make their way towards the Nile, at which point the rolling sandy highlands drop abruptly at the Nile valley, visible along the bottom of the image. Fields of intensive farming along the Nile appear red owing to this false-colour image being processed to include the near-infrared. The varying shades of red indicate how sensitive the multispectral instrument on Sentinel-2 is to differences in chlorophyll content, providing key information on plant health. Zooming in along the bottom we can see clusters of black dots where cities and towns are located, in addition to the fields. In the lower right, just above the red area, there is an interesting pattern of roads from our bird 's-eye view - possibly a developing residential area
Japet, satellite of Saturn, seen by Cassini - Crescent of Iapetus seen by Cassini spacecraft. - Mosaic in fake colors of Japet, a satellite of 1436 kilometers in diameter, taken by the Cassini probe on 10 September 2007 has a distance of 83 000 km from the satellite. Iapetus, 1,468 kilometers (912 miles) across, seen here in false color, is unique in its dramatic variation in brightness between the northern polar region and the middle and low latitudes. Equally prominent is the moon's equatorial ridge of towering mountains. The profile of the ridge against the darkness of space reveals that it is topped by a cratered plateau approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) wide. Further west, the profile of the ridge changes from a long plateau to discrete peaks. The mosaic consists of four image footprints across the surface of Iapetus and has a resolution of 489 meters (0.3 miles) per pixel. The color seen in this view represents an expansion of the wavelength region of the electromagnetic spectrum visible to human eyes. The intense reddish - brown hue of the dark material is far less pronounced in true color images. The use of enhanced color makes the reddish character of the dark material more visible than it would be to the naked eye. In addition, the scene has been brightened to improve the visibility of surface features. This view was acquired with the Cassini spacecraft narrow - angle camera on Sept. 10, 2007, at a distance of about 83,000 kilometers (51,600 miles) from Iapetus
