Jupiter and the Lactee Way on Devils Tower - Devils tower with Jupiter and the Milky way - The Lactee Way from Devils Tower National Monument. Located in Wyoming, this natural monolith rises 386 metres above the surrounding land. It is the first national monument in the United States, and is also famous for being the landing site of aliens in the film Encounters of the third type. Image obtained in June 2009. The Milky Way shines above the Devils Tower in Wyoming. The mountain was the feature landmark for the alien landing in the famous 1977 movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind””. It is also the very first American national monument. Devils Tower is a monolithic volcanic neck located in the Black Hills in northeastern Wyoming. It rises dramatically 386 m above the surrounding terrain. Jupiter is shining at bottom left. Image taken in June 2009

Globular cluster M71 in the Fleche - Globular cluster M71 in Sagitta - M71 is located about 12,000 light years away from Earth. Image of the central region of the cluster obtained by the Hubble space telescope. This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a bright scattering of stars in the small constellation of Sagitta (the Arrow). This is the centre of the globular cluster Messier 71, a great ball of ancient stars on the edge of our galaxy around 13,000 light - years from Earth. M71 is around 27 light - years across. Globular clusters are like galactic suburbs, pockets of stars that exist on the edge of major galaxies. These clusters are tightly bound together by their gravitational attraction, hence their spherical shape and their name: globulus means little sphere”” in Latin. Around 150 such globular clusters are known to exist around our Milky Way, each one of them containing several hundred thousand stars. Despite being a familiar object, Messier 71's precise nature was disputed until recently. Was it simply an open cluster, a loosely bound group of stars? This was for many years the dominant view. But in the 1970s, astronomers came to the view that it is in fact a relatively sparse globular cluster. The stars in Messier 71, as is usual in such clusters, are relatively old, at around 9 to 10 billion years, and consequently are low in elements other than hydrogen and helium.

Galaxy NGC 891 in Andromede - Edge - on spiral galaxy NGC 891 in Andromeda - Spiral galaxy seen by the slice located at a distance of 30 million years - light. Image obtained with a telescope of 50 cm, 20 hours of installation. Located about 30 million light years from Earth, NGC 891 is one of the most photographed edge - on spiral galaxies in the northern skies. This image represents slightly over twenty hours of total exposure through a twenty inch Ritchey - Chretien telescope with a SBIG STL - 11000 eleven mega - pixel camera
Star field in the constellation Sagittarius - Scattered stars in Sagittarius: Stars in Sagittarius seen by the space telescope Hubble. This colourful and star-studded view of the Milky Way galaxy was captured when the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope pointed its cameras towards the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer). Blue stars can be seen scattered across the frame, set against a distant backdrop of red-hued cosmic companions. This blue litter most likely formed at the same time from the same collapsing molecular cloud. The colour of a star can reveal many of its secrets. Shades of red indicate a star much cooler than the Sun, so either at the end of its life, or much less massive. These low-mass stars are called red dwarfs and are thought to be the most common type of star within the Milky Way. Similarly, brilliant blue hues indicate hot, young, or massive stars, many times the mass of the Sun. A star's mass decides its fate; more massive stars burn brightly over a short lifespan, and die young after only tens of millions of years. Stars like the Sun typically have more sedentary lifestyles and live longer, burning for approximately ten billion years. Smaller stars, on the other hand, live life in the slow lane and are predicted to exist for trillions of years, well beyond the current age of the Universe
Open cluster M44 in Cancer - M44, the Beehive Cluster - M44 is a cluster of stars located about 600 years - light from Earth, in the constellation Cancer. M44, the Beehive Cluster, also known as Praesepe (Latin for manger), is an easy naked eye object more than twice the size across the full moon, and has thus been noted since prehistoric times. It was one of the first objects on which Galileo trained his newly acquired telescope. M44 is one of the nearest open clusters, close to 600 light - years away. 200
Pleiades open cluster - The Pleiades star cluster - The Pleiades star cluster contains about 500 stars formed 100 million years ago. It is located 440 light years from Earth, in the constellation Taurus. Mosaic of 8 images obtained with a telescope of 30 cm in diameter.20h of pose. M45, the Pleiades, is a beautiful open cluster in Taurus surrounded by reflection nebulosity. The cluster has been known since ancient times and contains six bright stars that can easily be seen with the unaided eye, and 500 stars total, most too faint to be seen. The blue nebulosity is visible by starlight reflected off of dust in space. The cluster is located about 440 light years from the Earth and is estimated to be about 100 million years old
Cluster of stars NGC 299 in Toucan - Open cluster NGC 299 in Tucana: NGC 299 is an open cluster located in the galaxy of the Little Magellan Cloud. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 299 is an open star cluster located within the Small Magellanic Cloud just under 200 000 light-years away. Open clusters such as this are collections of stars weakly bound by the shackles of gravity, all of which formed from the same massive molecular cloud of gas and dust. Because of this, all the stars have the same age and composition, but vary in their mass because they formed at different positions within the cloud. This unique property not only ensures a spectacular sight when viewed through a sophisticated instrument attached to a telescope such as Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, but gives astronomers a cosmic laboratory in which to study the formation and evolution of stars - a process that is thought to depend strongly on a star's mass

Star field in the constellation Sagittarius - Scattered stars in Sagittarius: Stars in Sagittarius seen by the space telescope Hubble. This stunning image, captured by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), shows part of the sky in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer). The region is rendered in exquisite detail - deep red and bright blue stars are scattered across the frame, set against a background of thousands of more distant stars and galaxies. Two features are particularly striking: the colours of the stars, and the dramatic crosses that burst from the centres of the brightest bodies. While some of the colours in this frame have been enhanced and tweaked during the process of creating the image from the observational data, different stars do indeed glow in different colours. Stars differ in colour according to their surface temperature: very hot stars are blue or white, while cooler stars are redder. They may be cooler because they are smaller, or because they are very old and have entered the red giant phase, when an old star expands and cools dramatically as its core collapses. The crosses are nothing to do with the stars themselves, and, because Hubble orbits above Earth's atmosphere, nor are they due to any kind of atmospheric disturbance. They are actually known as diffraction spikes, and are caused by the structure of the telescope itself. Like all big modern telescopes, Hubble uses mirrors to capture light and form images. Its secondary mirror is supported by struts, called telescope spiders, arranged in a cross formation, and they diffract the incoming light. Diffraction is the slight bending of light as it passes near the edge of an object

Globular cluster NGC 6642 - Stars in globular cluster NGC 6642 in Sagittarius - Stars in globular cluster NGC 6642 in Sagittarius - Image of the center of the globular cluster NGC 6642 located in the constellation Sagittarius. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observed blue straggler. The core of NGC 6642, shown here in this Hubble Space Telescope image, is particularly dense, making this globular a difficult observational target for most telescopes. Using Hubble's ACS, astronomers have already made many interesting finds about NGC 6642. For example, many blue stragglers”” (stars which seemingly lag behind in their rate of aging) have been spotted in this globular, and it is known to be lacking in low - mass stars. This picture was created from visible and infrared images taken with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys. The field of view is approximately 1.6 by 1.6 arcminutes.

Globular cluster NGC 6397 in the Altar - Stars in globular cluster NGC 6397 in Ara - Image of the center of the globular cluster NGC 6397 located 8200 years - light in the southern constellation of the Altar. The density of stars is very important, the stars are distant from each other only a few weeks light (the star closest to our Sun is four years away - light). Sometimes a collision between two stars occurs; they merge into a single, young, bright and warm star called a blue straggler; some of these stars are visible near the center of the image. This Hubble Space Telescope view of the core of one of the nearest globular star clusters, called NGC 6397, located 8,200 light - years away in the constellation Ara. The stellar density is about a million times greater than in our Sun's stellar neighborhood. The stars are only a few light - weeks apart, while the nearest star to our Sun is over four light - years away. The ancient stars are so crowded together that a few of them inevitably collide with each other once in a while. Near misses are even more common. Even so, collisions only occur every few million years or so. When direct collisions occur, the two stars may merge to form a new star called a “” blue straggler”””; these hot, bright, young stars stand out among the old stars that make up the vast majority of stars in a globular cluster. Several such bright blue stars are visible near the center of the cluster in the image. This Hubble image is a mosaic of two sets of images taken several years apart by the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 taken in 1997 and 1999
Open Cluster of Pleiades - The Pleiades star cluster - The Pleiades cluster is a cluster of about 500 young stars nees 150 million years ago. Visible in the constellation Taurus, this cluster is 440 years from the Earth. The Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters and Messier 45, is one of the brightest and famous star clusters visible in the northern hemisphere. It consists of about 500 bright, hot, young stars that were all born at the same time between 75 and 150 million years ago within a large cloud of dust and gas. The cluster contains many stars, of which only a handful are commonly visible to the naked eye. The blue haze that accompanies them is due to very fine dust which still remains and preferentially reflects the blue light from the stars. This star cluster lie some 440 light years away from the Earth, in the constellation of Taurus
Globular cluster NGC 1806 in Dorado - Globular cluster NGC 1806 in Dorado - Image of the globular cluster NGC 1806 located in the southern constellation of Dorado. NGC 1806 belongs to the galaxy of the Great Magellan Cloud, a galaxy adjacent to our lactee path. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has turned its sharp eye towards a tight collection of stars, first seen 174 years ago. The result is a sparkling image of NGC 1806, tens of thousands of stars gravitationally bound into a rich cluster. Commonly called globular clusters, most of these objects are very old, having formed in the distant past when the Universe was only a fraction of its current age. NGC 1806 lies within the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way. It can be observed within the constellation of Dorado (the dolphin - fish), an area of the sky best seen from the Earth's southern hemisphere. NGC 1806 was discovered in 1836 by the British astronomer John Herschel. The Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys was used to obtain this picture that was created from images taken through blue (F435W, coloured blue), yellow (F555W, coloured green) and near - infrared (F814W, coloured red) filters. The exposure times were 770 s, 720 s and 688 s, respectively, and the field of view is 3.1 by 1.9 arcminutes
Starfield in Sagittarius/Swarms of Young and Older Stars Yield Clues to our Galaxy's Formation: Stars in Sagittarius seen by the Hubble space telescope. Aging red giant stars coexist with their more plentiful younger cousins, the smaller, white, Sun-like stars, in this crowded region of our galaxy's ancient central hub, or bulge. Most of the bright blue stars in the image are probably recently formed stars located in the foreground, in the galaxy's disk. The image is a composite of exposures taken in near-infrared and visible light with Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3

Star cluster NGC 6791 in Lyra - Open cluster NGC 6791 in Lyra - NGC 6791 is one of the oldest and largest open clusters; it contains about 10,000 stars. Here, a detail of the cluster obtained by the Hubble space telescope. The stars present would be 8 billion years old. A galaxy in the background is also visible at the top left. NGC 6791 is one of the oldest and largest open clusters known, about 10 times larger than most open clusters and containing roughly 10,000 stars. The cluster is located 13 000 light years in the constellation Lyra. The full Hubble Advanced Camera for Surveys field is full of stars estimated to be 8 billion years old. Two background galaxies can be seen at upper left

Open cluster NGC 4755 - Jewel Box - The Jewel Box star cluster - The NGC 4755 cluster is located in the constellation of the Southern Cross at a distance of 6400 years - light from Earth. The bright orange star on the top right is Kappa Crucis, a supergiant red star. This cluster contains about fifty stars formed about 16 million years ago. This close-up of the center of the cluster was obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. This image is a “” close - up 'view from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope of NGC 4755, or the Jewel Box cluster. Several very bright, pale blue supergiant stars, a solitary ruby - red supergiant and a variety of other brilliantly coloured stars are visible in the image, as well as many much fainter ones, often with intriguing colours. The huge variety in brightness exists because the brighter stars are 15 to 20 times the mass of the Sun, while the dimmest stars are less than half the mass of the Sun. This is the first image of an open galactic cluster with imaging extending from the far ultraviolet to the near - infrared. NGC 4755 (Caldwell 94) is called the Jewel Box, based on John Herschel's comment in the 1830's that it looked like a superb piece of jewelry. There are about 50 stars in this cluster which formed some 14 million years ago. Most of the cluster members are blue giants which in a few million years will exhaust their hydrogen fuel and become red giants on their way to a cataclysmic end as supernovae. One red giant can already be seen at the center of the cluster (top right)

Star cluster in the nebula NGC 3603 - Star cluster in NGC 3603 nebula - Cluster of young stars in the nebula NGC 3603, located about 20,000 years ago - light from Earth in the southern constellation of Carene. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in August and December 2009. NGC 3603 is a prominent star - forming region located in the Carina spiral arm of the Milky Way, about 20,000 light - years away from our Solar System. This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows a young star cluster surrounded by a vast region of dust and gas. Most of the bright stars in the image are hot blue stars whose ultraviolet radiation and violent winds have blown out an enormous cavity in the gas and dust enveloping the cluster. This Hubble Space Telescope image was captured in August 2009 and December 2009 with the Wide Field Camera 3 in both visible and infrared light, which trace the glow of sulfur, hydrogen, and iron
The cluster of stars Pismis 24 in the Scorpio - Pismis 24 star cluster in Scorpius - This image obtained by the Hubble space telescope shows the cluster of young stars Pismis 24, located about 8000 years - light in the nebula NGC 6357 of the Scorpio. This cluster houses a star that was thought to be the most massive star in our galaxy, between 200 and 300 solar masses. The measurements obtained by the Hubble telescope showed that this star, Pismis 24 - 1, was actually a double star and that its mass was actually only about 100 solar masses. High - resolution observations from Hubble have shed light on the real mass of a star previously believed to be among the heaviest known in our Milky Way. Originally, the mass of the star was thought to be an incredible 200 - 300 solar masses, but turned out to be only 100 solar masses

Star cluster IC 1590 in NGC 281 (Cassiopee) - Open cluster and Bok globules in NGC 281 - View of a detail in the center of the nebula NGC 281 in Cassiopee. The brightest stars of the open cluster IC 1590 are visible, accompanied by Bok's blood cells, dark interstellar clouds consisting of gas and dust that absorb light. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Astronomers have used the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to study the young open star cluster IC 1590, which is found within the star formation region NGC 281 - - nicknamed the Pacman Nebula due to its resemblance to the famous arcade game character. This image only shows the central part of the nebula, where the brightest stars at the core of the cluster are found, with part of the Pacman's hungry mouth visible as the dark region below. But Pacman isn't gobbling up these stars. Instead, the nebula's gas and dust are being used as raw ingredients to make new stars. However, the stars in IC 1590 are still plotting their escape from the Pacman Nebula, as open clusters are only loosely bound together and the grouping will eventually disperse within a few tens of millions of years. IC 1590 lies about ten thousand light - years from Earth in the constellation of Cassiopeia (The Queen). Through small telescopes the core of the cluster that appears at the top of this picture shows up as a triple star, but the nebula that surrounds it is much fainter and very hard to see

Bok's cells in NGC 281 (Cassiopee) - Bok globules in NGC 281 - View of a detail of the nebula NGC 281 in Cassiopee center on Bok's Globules. A Bok's blood cell is a dark interstellar cloud of gases and dust that absorb light. If it condenses enough, it gives birth to new stars. Near these blood cells shine blue stars; they belong to the young cluster of stars IC 1590. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in October 2005. These opaque, dark knots of gas and dust are called “” Bok globules,””” and they are absorbing light in the center of the nearby emission nebula and star - forming region. Bok hypothesized that giant molecular clouds, on the order of hundreds of light - years in size, can become perturbed and form small pockets where the dust and gas are highly concentrated. These small pockets become gravitationally bound and accumulate dust and gas from the surrounding area. If they can capture enough mass, they have the potential of creating stars in their cores; however, not all Bok globules will form stars. Some will dissipate before they can collapse to form stars. That may be what's happening to the globules seen here in NGC 281. Near the globules are bright blue stars, members of the young open cluster IC 1590. The cluster is made up of a few hundred stars. The club's core, off the image towards the top, is a tight grouping of extremely hot, massive stars with an immense stellar wind. The stars emit visible and ultraviolet light that energizes the surrounding hydrogen gas in NGC 281. This gas then becomes super heated in a process called ionization, and it glows pink in the image. The Bok globules in NGC 281 are located very close to the center of the IC 1590 cluster. The heavy fracturing of the globules may appear beautifully serene but is in fact evident of the harsh
