Mars - Satellite Phobos - Martian moon Phobos - View of the satellite Phobos obtained by the Mars Express probe on July 23, 2008 at a distance of 97 km from the Martian moon. The resolution is 3.7 meters per pixel. On 23 July 2008, the High Resolution Stereo Camera on board the ESA's Mars Express took the highest - resolution full - disc image yet of the surface of the moon Phobos. The image data was acquired from a distance of 97 km with a spatial resolution of about 3.7 m/pixel in orbit 5851. These images have surpassed all previous images from other missions in continuous coverage of the illuminated surface at the highest spatial resolution of 3.7 m/pixel. This image is photometrically enhanced to bring out the features in the less illuminated part
Scandinavia at night - 04/2015 - Scandinavia at night - 04/2015 - Southern Scandinavia seen from the International Space Station on April 3, 2015. A boreal aurora is also visible. Southern Scandinavia seen just before midnight under a full moon from the international space station (ISS) on April 3rd 2015. Prominent features include a green aurora to the north (upper middle of the image), the blackness of the Baltic Sea (lower right), clouds (top right) and snow in Norway illuminated under a full moon. City lights clearly show the recognizable coastline of the Skagerrak and Kattegat seaway leading into the Baltic Sea that separates Denmark from its neighbors to the north
Uranus and three satellites seen by Voyager 2 - Image obtained by the Voyager 2 probe in January 1986 showing the planet Uranus accompanied by the satellites Ariel (top right), Miranda (closest to the planet) and Umbriel (bottom left). This Voyager photograph of Uranus taken in january 1986 is a composite of for images taken by the narrow angle camera. At this range, clouds and other features in the atmosphere as small as 1,370 km. could be detected by Voyager 2. Yet, no such features are visible. This view is toward the illuminated south pole of Uranus. The predominant blue color is the result of atmospheric methane, which absorbs the red wavelengths from incoming sunlight. The spot at the upper left edge of the planet's disk reulted from the removal of a network mark used in making measurments on the photograph. Three of Uranus' five known satellites are visible; Miranda (at far right, closest to the planet), Ariel (next out, at top), and Umbriel (lower left). Titania and Oberon are now outside the narrow angle camera's field of view when it centered on the planet. This color composite was made from images taken through blue, green, orange, and clear filters

Nebula IC 2220 in the Carene - A mass - loss star in IC 2220 - This nebula is illuminated by a giant red star, the star HD 65670. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. The bright, supergiant star at the centre of this nebula is known only by its catalog designation, HD 65750. The nebulosity around the star is the result of light reflected by dust surrounding it. The dust is thought to consist mainly of particles of silica condensed from material which the star is losing from its distended surface at a fairly steady rate. The rate of mass loss is much higher than in normal stars and is sufficient to produce the reflection nebula IC 2220. The stellar nature of the central object is revealed by the four diffraction spikes extending from it. These are artifacts due to structures within the telescope. The light from the star has also produced the annular halation ring (a photographic artefact) that ornaments the nebula. These features, real or otherwise, have provoked the name 'Toby Jug' for this nebula, after the ornamental English drinking vessel or beer mug
Saturn in false colours - Saturn in infrared - The planet Saturn seen in visible and infrared by the Cassini probe on November 1, 2008. This false - color composite image, constructed from data obtained by Nasa's Cassini spacecraft, shows Saturn's rings and southern hemisphere. The composite image was made from 65 individual observations by Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer in the near - infrared portion of the light spectrum on Nov. 1, 2008. The observations were each six minutes long. In this image constructed from data collected in the near - infrared wavelengths of light, scientists designated blue to indicate sunlight reflected at a wavelength of 2 microns, green to indicate sunlight reflected at 3 microns and red to indicate thermal emission at 5 microns. Saturn's rings reflect sunlight at 2 microns, but not at 3 and 5 microns, so they appear deep blue. Saturn's high altitude haze reflects sunlight at both 2 and 3 microns, but not at 5 microns, and so it appears green to blue - green. The heat emission from the interior of Saturn is only seen at 5 microns wavelength in the spectrometer data, and thus appears red. The dark spots and banded features in the image are clouds and small storms that outline the deeper weather systems and circulation patterns of the planet. They are illuminated from underneath by Saturn's thermal emission, and thus appear in silhouette
Southern Aurora on the Planet Saturn - Aurora on Saturn - The Planet Saturn accompanied by a Southern Aurora, seen in visible and infrared by the Cassini probe on November 1, 2008. This false - color composite image, constructed from data obtained by Nasa's Cassini spacecraft, shows the glow of auroras streaking out about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) from the cloud tops of Saturn's south polar region. In this image constructed from data collected in the near - infrared wavelengths of light, the auroral emission is shown in green. Scientists designated blue to indicate sunlight reflected at wavelengths from 2 to 3 microns, green to indicate light from hydrogen ions at wavelengths between 3 and 4 microns and red to indicate thermal emission at 5 microns. Saturn's rings and high altitude haze only reflect sunlight at 3 microns or less, so they appear deep blue. The glow from the aurora can only be seen at the wavelengths in the green channel. The heat emission from the interior of Saturn is only seen at 5 microns wavelength in the spectrometer data, and thus appears red. The dark spots and banded features in the image are clouds and small storms that outline the deeper weather systems and circulation patterns of the planet. They are illuminated from underneath by Saturn's thermal emission, and thus appear in silhouette. The composite image was made from 65 individual observations by Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer on Nov. 1, 2008. The observations were each six minutes long
Las Vegas night view - 11/2010 - Las Vegas, Nevada Metropolitan Area at Night - 11/2010 - Las Vegas metropolis night view from the International Space Station (ISS) on November 30, 2010. This image features the Las Vegas, Nevada metropolitan area, located near the southern tip of the state within the Mohave Desert of the southwestern USA. While the city of Las Vegas proper is famous for its casinos and resort hotels, the metropolitan area includes several other incorporated cities and unincorporated (not part of a state - recognized municipality) areas. Astronauts on board the International Space Station observe and photograph numerous metropolitan areas when they are illuminated by sunlight, but the extent and pattern of these areas is perhaps best revealed by the city lights at night. The surrounding dark desert presents a stark contrast to the brightly lit, regular street grid of the developed metropolitan area. The Vegas Strip (image center) is reputed to be the brightest spot on Earth due to the concentration of lights associated with its hotels and casinos. The tarmac of McCarran International Airport to the south is a dark feature by comparison. The airstrips of Nellis Air Force Base on the northeastern fringe of the metropolitan area are likewise dark compared to the well - lit adjacent streets and neighborhoods. The dark mass of Frenchman Mountain borders the metropolitan area to the east. Acquisition of focused night time images such as this one require astronauts to track the target with the handheld camera while the ISS is moving at a speed of more than 7 kilometers per second (15,659 miles per hour) relative to the Earth's surface. This was achieved during ISS Expedition 6 using a homemade tracking device, but subsequent crews have needed to develop manual tracking skills. These skills, together with advances in digital camera technology, have enabled recent ISS crews to acquire striking night time images of the Earth
