Constellations of Sagittarius and the Southern Crown - Constellations of Sagittarius and Corona Australis - From ancient times the constellation of Sagittarius (the Archer) was represented as a Centaur, half man, half horse, ready to fire his/its bow and arrow at the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion. The constellation is the 15th largest in the sky and covers about 867 square degrees, including the brightest part of the Milky Way. It contains no fewer than 15 Messier objects. Sagittarius is a zodiacal constellation, so the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun, among the stars, pases through it, between M8 and M20. The much smaller constellation of Corona Australis (the Southern Crown) is quite distinctive to the eye though its stars are fainter than those in neighbouring Sagittarius. It is quite ancient having be recognised by Ptolemy, and one legend has it that it represents the coronet worn by Sagittarius. Who knows. It is 80th in size among the 88 constellations and covers 128 square degrees

Nebula Trifide (M20) in the constellation Sagittarius - Trifid nebula (M20) in Sagittarius - View of the Trifide nebula (M20/NGC 6514) located in the constellation Sagittarius between 5000 and 10,000 years - light from Earth. Measuring some forty light years across, this nebula contains enough gas to make many thousands of suns. Within it a number of young hot stars have already formed. The hottest cause the gas, mostly hydrogen, to emit its characteristic red light. Around the red emission nebula the gas contains many dust grains which preferentially reflect the blue component of starlight. In some parts of the nebula there are so many dust grains that they hide the glowing gas, producing the three dark lanes which give the object its name. Trifid is located in Sagittarius constellation between 5000 and 10 000 light - years away

Nebula Trifide (M20) in the constellation Sagittarius - Trifid nebula (M20) in Sagittarius - View of the center of the Trifide nebula (M20/NGC 6514) located in the constellation Sagittarius between 5000 and 10,000 years - light from Earth. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Vast clouds of hydrogen mixed with tiny dust grains are distributed throughout the Milky Way. The hydrogen can only be seen at visible wavelengths when it is illuminated by very hot stars. The light from these stars is sufficiently rich in ultraviolet light to cause the gas to glow with its characteristic red colour. In most cases, such as here, the hot stars formed recently from the hydrogen cloud. The stars found at the heart of the Trifid Nebula are here seen associated with dust lanes which are silhouetted against the glowing background. This nebula is in the constellation of Sagittarius at a distance between 5000 and 10,000 light years

Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. The spectacular Trifid nebula (Messier 20) is one of the best known in the sky. It is a striking mixture of brilliant red light emitted from excited hydrogen gas and the soft blue glow of a reflection nebula. The blue arises from starlight, scattered by dust particles between the stars. The size of the particles is minute, similar to those of smoke, which also has a bluish hue. However, the scattered light is not a pure blue, and if we see it through a medium that is yellow (i.e. absorbs blue light) some green colouration remains. This effect can be seen in some of the darker parts of the faint reflection nebula that surrounds the Trifid, where partial absorption of light by foreground dust provides a yellow 'filter', producing shades of green. This image has been photographically enhanced using an unsharp mask

Image obtained with a bezel Astro - Physics 130 EDT, 12x6min of poses. M20, The Trifid Nebula, in the constellation of Sagittarius, is a remarkable object - large, bright and beautiful. It is a complex of red emission, blue reflection, and dark nebulae about the size of the full moon. It was shot at 1,000 mm of focal length with 130 mm of aperture at f/8 (Astro - Physics 130EDT apochromatic refractor) with a Canon 20Da DSLR and only 12 x 6 minutes of exposure at ISO 1600

Nebula Trifide (M20) in the constellation Sagittarius - Trifid nebula (M20) and open cluster M21 - View of the Trifide nebula (M20/NGC 6514) located in the constellation Sagittarius between 5000 and 10,000 years - light from Earth. Above it, the M21 star cluster. M20, the Trifid Nebula is a remarkable object, large, bright and beautiful. It is a complex of red emission and blue reflection nebulosity about the size of the full moon, intersected by three dark lanes, from which the Trifid gets its name. M21 is a rich open cluster comprised of some 70 stars with a large brightness range and strong central condensation, approximately 13 arc minutes in diameter and magnitude 5.9, and located 1/2 degree to the northeast of M20
Dark stars and nebulae in Sagittarius and Ophiuchus - Dark Nebulae in Sagittarius and Scorpius - Dark nebulae on the edge of the Pipe nebula. This complex of dust clouds that block the light of the stars is located between the Sagittarius and the Scorpio, near the center of our lactee road. Also visible, the nebulae emitted from the Lagoon, Trifide, and Omega. Image obtained with Canon 20Da, 50 mm f/1.4, 6 x 5 min ISO 1600 poses. This amazing complex of dark nebulae and dust in Sagittarius and Ophiuchus lies near the central bulge of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Dark nebulae are non - luminous clouds of obscuring matter and dust which block the light from stars behind them. Many of the dark nebulae seen here are listed in E.E. Barnard's catalog of dark nebulae and are given a “” B” designation, such as B72, the Snake Nebula. Almost the entire complex of dark nebulae seen on the right hand side of the image make up the “Dark Horse and Rider””. The Pipe Nebula, Lynds Dark Nebula 1773, comprises the hind quarter and back leg of the Dark Horse, which is seen vertically in this image. B63 is the front leg, B270 is the Horse's head, and B276 is the Rider's head. The area is also filled with star clouds, bright emission nebulae such as M8 - the Lagoon Nebula, M20 - the Trifid Nebula, and M17 - the Omega Nebula. The small Sagittarius star cloud, M24, is at the upper left, and the large Sagittarius star cloud at lower left. The center of our galaxy lies near the bottom edge of the image. Image taken with a Canon 20Da DSLR, 50 mm f/1.4, and 6 x 5 min exposures at ISO 1600
Center of the Trifid Nebula (M20) - Center of the Trifid Nebula - The Trifid Nebula (M20) is located between 5000 and 10,000 years - light of the Earth in the constellation of Sagittarius. This image obtained by the Hubble space telescope shows the center of this nebula. A group of bright stars is visible in the center of the image near the dark bands of interstellar dust. These stars are young, blue, massive and extremely hot stars; they are O-type stars and the radiation they emit influence the evolution and structure of the nebula. Trifid Nebula, also known as Messier 20 and NGC 6514, lies within our own Milky Way Galaxy between 5000 and 10 000 light - years from Earth, in the constellation Sagittarius. This image from the Hubble Space Telescope offers a close - up view of the center of the Trifid Nebula, near the intersection of the dust bands, where a group of recently formed, massive, bright stars is easily visible. These stars, which astronomers classify as belonging to the hottest and bluest types of stars called type “” O,””” are releasing a flood of ultraviolet radiation that dramatically influences the structure and evolution of the surrounding nebula

Nebulae M20, M8 and NGC 6559 in Sagittarius - M8, M20 and the NGC 6559 nebulae - View of nebulae of the Lagoon (M8/NGC 6523), bottom, Trifide (M20), top, and NGC 6559 (left). Located in Sagittarius, these nebulae are about 5000 light years away from Earth. This image shows the great diversity of celestial objects in the region of M8. These include the emission nebulae M8, M20, IC4685 and IC1274. Reflection nebulae are also seen in M20, IC1274 - 5, vDb 115, IC 4678. M21 open cluster is also seen. Many of the nebulae seen here are not often imaged do to their low surface brightness. Of note is the bluish halo surrounding and encompassing M8 itself. This appears to not be cataloged. It may be just a portion of M8 itself that is usually not seen. Purposefully the background is bright so to see this nebula
The center of our galaxy, the milky way - The center of our galaxy, the milky way - This billion pixel mosaic shows the central region of our galaxy, the Lactee Way. The 52 assembled images cover an area that extends from Sagittarius (with the galactic center and nebulae M8 and M20) on the left, to the Scorpio, with the star Antares and the colored cloud of Rho Ophiuchus on the right. Image obtained with a Takahashi FSQ 106 Ed bezel at Cerro Paranal Observatory in Chile; 200 hours of poses. This image is a 1 billion pixel RGB mosaic of the galactic center region (340 million pixels in each R, V and B color). It shows the region spanning from Sagittarius (with the Milky Way center and M8/M20 area on the left) to Scorpius (with colorful Antares and Rho Ophiuchus region on the right) and cat paw nebula (red nebula at the bottom). This mosaic was assembled from 52 different sky fields made from 1200 individual images and 200 hours total exposure time, final image size is 24000x14000 pixels. The images were taken with a SBIG STL camera+Takahashi FSQ106ed f/3.6 telescope and NJP160 mount from the clear skies of ESO Paranal Observatory in Chile. This mosaic is one of the three parts of the ESO Gigagalaxy Zoom project
The Milky Way, looking towards the Galactic Centre - Mosaic of 50 images presenting the region of the center of our galaxy. 60 hours of cumulative poses. The center of our galaxy is a remarkable place. In visible light the central brightening known as “” Baade's Window”” represents not the true center but a discrete “” window””” in the dust which allows the light of millions of bulge stars to shine through. This allowed Walter Baade to peer through and calculate the distance to the galactic center in the 1940's. The true galactic center lies in the lower right of the image, near the NGC 6334-6357 nebulas complex. 50 Frame Mosaic, 60 Hours Exposure

Nebulae M20 - M8 in Sagittarius - M20 and M8 nebulas in Sagittarius - View of nebulae of the Lagoon (M8/NGC 6523), below, and Trifide (M20), above. Located in Sagittarius, these nebulae are about 5000 light years away from Earth. From a dark site, the Lagoon nebula (M8), bottom, is visible to the unaided eye as a small bright patch above the large Sagittarius star cloud in the Milky Way. Taking its name from the dark lane that runs through the center of the nebula, just to the west of open cluster NGC 6530, the Lagoon nebula is a beautiful sight in any size telescope. M20, top, is a spectacular combination of emission and reflection nebulosity, bisected by the dark nebula B85

Open cluster M21 in Sagittarius - Open cluster M21 in Sagittarius - The cluster of stars M21 (NGC 6531) is composed of about sixty stars located in the constellation Sagittarius. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. The open cluster M21, or NGC 6531, in the constellation Sagittarius shows a strong central concentration and a wide range of star brightnesses, despite its limited membership of probably fewer than 60 stars. Most likely quite young (for a star cluster, that means only a few million years), its distance is uncertain. M21 is quite close on the sky to M20, the Trifid Nebula

Nebula Trifide (M20) in Sagittarius view in visible and infrared - This image composite compares the well - known visible - light picture of the glowing Trifid Nebula (left panel) with infrared views from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope (remaining three panels). The Trifid Nebula is a giant star - forming cloud of gas and dust located 5,400 light - years away in the constellation Sagittarius. The false - color Spitzer images reveal a different side of the Trifid Nebula. Where dark lanes of dust are visible trisecting the nebula in the visible - light picture, bright regions of star - forming activity are seen in the Spitzer pictures. All together, Spitzer uncovered 30 massive embryonic stars and 120 smaller newborn stars throughout the Trifid Nebula, in both its dark lanes and luminous clouds. These stars are visible in all the Spitzer images, mainly as yellow or red spots. Embryonic stars are developing stars about to burst into existence. Ten of the 30 massive embryos discovered by Spitzer were found in four dark cores, or stellar “” incubators,””” where stars are born. Astronomers using data from the Institute of Radioastronomy millimeter telescope in Spain had previously identified these cores but thought they were not quite ripe for stars. Spitzer's highly sensitive infrared eyes were able to penetrate all four cores to reveal rapidly growing embryos. Astronomers can actually count the individual embryos tucked inside the cores by looking closely at the Spitzer image taken by its infrared array camera (top right). This instrument has the highest spatial resolution of Spitzer's imaging cameras. The Spitzer image from the multiband imaging photometer (bottom right), on the other hand, specializes in detecting cooler materials. Its view highlights the relatively cool core material falling onto the Trifidi's growing embryos. The middle panel is a combination of Spitzer data from both of these instruments. The embryos are thought to have been triggered by a massiv
