Sunrise over Mercury - Artist view - Sunrise over Mercury - Artist view - On Mercury, the solar crown announces for several Earth days the sunrise. In the crepuscular sky, the Earth is represented accompanied by a few stars of the constellation Scorpio. A ghostly coronal light reveals Mercury's rugged and inhospitable surface. High up in the dark sky the bright object at the two o'clock position is the Earth, which is in full - phase due to it being almost behind the Sun in relation to Mercury. The three points of light beneath the Earth are the stars Graffias, Dshubba, and Pi Scorpii in the constellation Scorpius. A visit to Mercury would not be without its aesthetic pleasures. Given Mercury's proximity to the Sun and its lack of atmosphere, just before sunrise and sunset a visitor would be treated to a front row seat to the Sun's dazzling corona. Mercury's leisurely rotation rate* would permit the corona to be observed for as long as several Earth weeks before being either upstaged by the brilliance of the Sun or disappearing below the horizon.* Mercury's period of rotation is 59 Earth days, however this rotation rate combined with Mercury's brisk orbit around the Sun, results in 88 Earth days between sunrise and sunset

Mercury by Messenger. 14/01/2008 - Mercury by Messenger - Jan 14 2008 - Image of the surface of Mercury obtained at a distance of 11,588 km by the Messenger probe on January 14, 2008. The large impact crater at the bottom left of the image is about 230 km in diameter. This image of Mercury's surface was acquired during Messenger's first flyby of the planet on January 14, 2008 when the spacecraft was 11,588 km (7,200 miles) from Mercury's surface. This scene shows at least five different events in Mercury's surface history. The large crater to the lower left of the image measures ~ 230 km (143 miles) in diameter and has a prominent crater, about 85 km (53 miles) across, nestled inside it, south of its center. Both of these craters were subsequently filled with a material that appears to have been emplaced in a relatively fluid form, as evidenced by the fact that the material “” embays”” or onlaps the ejecta blanket surrounding the rim of the smaller crater. The larger crater is filled almost to its rim with this smooth plains material, which is thought to be of volcanic origin. Subsequent to the plains location was the formation of the linear feature trending southwest to northeast across the lower half of the scene. This feature is a lobate scarp, similar to many others found on Mercury's surface, and thought to originate when compressional stresses crumpled the surface. The last major episode in the history of this region is the impact that formed the large crater at the top of the image. The formation of this crater resulted in impact - derived material, known as ejecta, being thrown out radially for large distances. Some of this ejecta formed chains of “” secondary”” craters as it impacted back onto the surface; some of these secondary craters are visible atop the lobate scarp

Comparison between Earth, Mercury and the Moon - Earth, Mercury, and Earth's Moon compared - Comparison at the scale of the Earth's size, the planet Mercury and the Moon. The diameter of Mercury is about one third of that of the Earth. Mercury is a little larger than the Earth's Moon and is believed to be composed mostly of iron and rock, making it considerably denser than the Moon. Mercury also has a magnetic field about 1% as strong as the Earth's. Mercury's diameter is only one third that of the Earth's. It has only 6% the mass. If you weigh 180 pounds on the Earth, you would weigh 64 pounds on Mercury. Is only one-third the Earth's distance from the Su
Venus Surface - Artist View - Venus from ground level - Artist view - A visit to Venus 'surface would reveal a wasteland of vast proportions. While Venus is nearly as large as the Earth, it has over three times the land mass (most of the Earth's surface is under water). The conditions are so dry and hostile to life as we know it the surface of Venus is likely as sterile as an autoclave. Venus' surface is actually hotter than Mercury's, despite being nearly twice as far from the Sun. It is so hot that the stony venusian ground itself may be slightly plastic and emit a red glow at night. The closest the Earth comes to matching this combination of extreme pressure and temperature is in the realm of deep undersea volcanic vents
Mercury seen by the Messenger probe - Mercury seen by Messenger spacecraft - Image of Mercury, obtained by the Messenger probe on October 6, 2008. The bright crater in the middle of the picture down is the Kuiper crater. The large striations north and east of the crater are observed for the first time by a space probe. Recolorised image. The spectacular image shows the departing planet taken about 90 minutes after the spacecraft's closest approach to Mercury on October 6, 2008. The bright crater just south of the center of the image is Kuiper, identified on images from the Mariner 10 mission in the 1970s. For most of the terrain east of Kuiper, toward the limb (edge) of the planet, the departing images are the first spacecraft views of that portion of Mercury's surface. A striking characteristic of this newly imaged area is the large pattern of rays that extend from the northern region of Mercury to regions south of Kuiper. This extensive ray system appears to emanate from a relatively young crater newly imaged by MESSENGER, providing a view of the planet distinctly unique from that obtained during Messenger's first flyby. This young, extensively rayed crater, along with the prominent rayed crater to the southeast of Kuiper, near the limb of the planet, were both seen in Earth - based radar images of Mercury but not previously imaged by spacecraft.
