Spiral galaxy of Sombrero M104 in the Virgin - The Sombrero galaxy (M104) in Virgo - Image of the spiral galaxy M104 (Sombrero galaxy), located about 28 million years ago - light. Image obtained with the 3.9m Anglo - Australian Telescope from Siding Spring. The Sombrero, named after the broad - brimmed Mexican hat it superficially resembles, is probably the most famous galaxy in the sky. The light from this remarkable spiral system is dominated by the billions of old, faint stars that form the vast 'bulge' around its tiny hidden nucleus. Most spirals, including the Milky Way, have clouds of old, faint stars around their nuclei, but in M104 the galaxy's light is dominated by them. This effect is enhanced because disk of the galaxy is seen nearly edge - on and dust in its outer parts is in silhouette as it crosses the picture. The galaxy is about 28 million light years distant
Planetary nebula Helix (NGC 7293) in Aquarius - Planetary nebula Helix (NGC 7293) - This nebula is located 690 years - light from Earth. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope This faint object is the nearest planetary nebula to the Sun and on deep photographs has a diameter of about half a degree - - the same apparent size as the Sun in the sky. The AAT colour picture shows the brighter parts of the nebula, revealing various ionization levels within the shell of matter ejected from the central star. The greenish middle portion is evidence of excited oxygen atoms, while the outer red is predominantly light from nitrogen and hydrogen. The smallest of the radial blobs inside the red shell are about 150 astronomical units across (150 times the Earth - Sun distance) and they give this beautiful object its alternative name, the Sunflower Nebula. The Helix is about 400 light years away, or about 100 times more distant than the nearest stars

Nebulae B175 and VDB 152 in Cephee - Dark nebula B175 and reflection nebula VDB 152 - Located about 1400 years ago - light in the constellation Cephee, a large dust trail leads to a bluish nebula. This is the dark nebula, Barnard 175, which faces the nebula by reflexion VDB 152 (Ced 201). The reflection nebula vdB 152 is really very faint. It lies about 1400 light - years away, along the northern Milky Way in the constellation Cepheus. Near the edge of a large molecular cloud, pockets of cosmic dust in the region block light from background stars or scatter light from the embedded bright star (top) giving parts of the nebula a characteristic blue color. Ultraviolet light from the star is also thought to cause a dim reddish luminescence in the nebular dust. Although stars do form in molecular clouds, this star seems to have only accidentally wandered into the area, as its measured velocity through interstellar space is very different from the cloud's velocity

Omega nebula (M17) in Sagittarius - The Omega nebula (M17) in Sagittarius - View of the Omega nebula (M17/NGC 6618) located in the constellation Sagittarius at a distance of 5700 light years. Image obtained by the VST (VLT Survey Telescope) in Chile in June 2011. The first released VST image shows the spectacular star - forming region Messier 17, also known as the Omega Nebula or the Swan Nebula, as it has never been seen before. This vast region of gas, dust and hot young stars lies in the heart of the Milky Way in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer). The VST field of view is so large that the entire nebula, including its fainter outer parts, is captured - - and retains its superb sharpness across the entire image

Lyon Astronomical Clock - Astronomical clock in Lyon - France - L'Astrolabe The outer circle allows you to know the time. It is divided into 2 parts of 12 Roman numerals (noon at the top, midnight at the bottom). The time is indicated by the alidade ending with a fleur-de-lis (here, 12:25). The crescent has the opposite is only a counterweight. Then we find the calendar with the days of the week as well as the months in Latin. The inner circle represents the zodiac, with the 12 signs. In the central part, the Sun moves over the ecliptic circle during the year. Inside the latter, the circle of the Moon and its phases (here in the last quarter). In the background, the map of the sky. Located in the Cathedrale Saint John, the clock dates back to 1379. Writings witness his presence in the cathedrale since 1383, making it one of the oldest astronomical clocks in Europe. It consists of a 1.80m square tower, surmounted by an octagonal turret presenting the automatons and a dome supporting a rooster. The whole peak is 9.35m high. The astronomical part is divided into three parts: the astrolabe; below, the perpetual calendar, and on the right side, the minute dial. Astronomical clock - 16th century by Hugues Levet. Galaxies cluster Abell 2744 - This image of the galaxy cluster Abell 2744 located in the constellation of the Sculptor, combines images obtained in visible form by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). This image of galaxy cluster Abell 2744 combines data from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys, with an image taken with the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT). Hubble provides the central, most detailed part of the image, while the VLT, which has a wider field of view, provides the outer parts of the image. This object has been nicknamed Pandora's Cluster because of the many different and strange phenomena that were unleashed by a huge collision that occurred over a period of 350 million years. A simultaneous pile - up between at least four separate clusters has produced strange effects that have never been seen together before
Galaxy NGC 17 in the Whale - Galaxy NGC 17 in Cetus - The galaxy NGC 17 is located about 250 million years away from Earth. Presented with a single nucleus, its shape indicates that it has finished absorbing another galaxy. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on 4 July 2002. This galaxy features a single nucleus, a containing a blue central disk with delicate fine structure in the outer parts and tidal tails indicative of two former disk galaxies. At present these galaxies appear to have completed their merger. The remnant shows clear signs that the merger was gas - rich and accompanied by a starburst. NGC 17 is gas - rich and can sustain its strong central starburst and present mild central activity for some time to come. NGC 17 is located about 250 million light - years away in the constellation of Cetus, the Whale. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on july 4, 2002
Interacting galaxies UGC 8335 in the Great Bear - Interacting galaxies UGC 8335 in Ursa Major - The galaxy UGC 8335, also called Arp 238, is located about 400 million years away from Earth. It's a pair of spiral galaxies interacting. Regions of intense star formations appear in blue. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on May 10, 2002. UGC 8335 (Arp 238) is a strongly interacting pair of spiral galaxies resembling two ice skaters. The interaction has united the galaxies via a bridge of material and has yanked two strongly curved tails of gas and stars from the outer parts of their bodies. Both galaxies show dust lanes in their centers. UGC 8335 is located in the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear, about 400 million light - years from Earth. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on May 10, 2002

Spiral galaxy NGC 1313 in the Reticule - The starburst galaxy NGC 1313 - NGC 1313 is a galaxy located about 15 million years ago - light. Intense star formations are observed. In visible light, NGC 1313 seems dominated by scattered patches of star formation which give our picture a rather ragged appearance. The clouds of bluish stars seem to have burst into existence at random, without the normal trigger gravitational interaction or even a distinct spiral to prompt them. Star formation seems to have occurred in a series of irregular, self-sustaining bursts. However, a very deep image shows that the outer parts of galaxy are also very disturbed. Seen with a radio telescope, the galaxy is rich in hydrogen, the raw material of stars, and the gas circulates around the centre of the galaxy in a well ordered way, apparently hardly affected by the starburst activity or other irregularities that so colour our visual impression of this unusual galaxy. NGC 1313 is at a distance of about 15 million light years, close enough for some of its brightest stars to be seen as individuals

Galaxies NGC 1316 and 1317 in the Furnace - Galaxies NGC 1316 and NGC 1317 in Fornax - The giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 (below) absorbed a spiral galaxy a few billion years ago. A few bands of dust visible in the centre are the traces of this feast. A spiral galaxy, NGC 1317, is visible just above it. These galaxies resident more than 60 million years ago - light in the array of galaxies of the Furnace. Also called Fornax A, NGC 1316 is one of the strongest radio sources in the sky. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. NGC 1316 - 17 are on the outskirts of a nearby cluster of galaxies in the southern constellation of Fornax, at a distance of about 60 million light years. At first glance, the optical image of these galaxies does not seem to be very unusual. However, closer inspection shows that the larger galaxy, the elliptical NGC 1316, has distinct dust lanes in its inner regions, and NGC 1317 is a strangely distorted spiral. The dust lanes strongly suggest that NGC 1316 has recently absorbed a dusty spiral galaxy, and that the merger is not yet complete. The colour picture also hints at faint arcs or shells of stars in the outer parts of the galaxy, another strong indication of recent merger activity. A much deeper picture reveals enormous loops and shell - like structures extending far beyond this photograph, again supporting the merger hypothesis. If any more evidence were needed, it is provided by radio astronomers, who see Fornax A as one of the strongest and largest sources in the sky, with radio lobes extending over several degrees of sky. However, unlike the faint optical extensions, the radio lobes extend roughly E - W across the sky. There is another southern galaxy with many of these characteristics - - dusty elliptical, faint outer shells and somewhat detached from a cluster of galaxies. This is NGC 5128, Centaurus A, a confimed merger remnant
