Globular cluster M107 in Ophiuchus - Globular cluster M107 in Ophiuchu
Galaxy M88 in the Hair of Berenice - Spiral galaxy M88 in Coma Berenices - M88 is a spiral galaxy located in the cluster of the Virgin. Spiral galaxy located in the Virgo cluster of galaxies
Globular cluster M70 in Sagittarius - Globular cluster M70 in Sagittarius - Star cluster located about 29,300 years - light from Earth. Star cluster located at about 29,000 light years away
Open cluster CR 399 in Little Fox - The Coathanger (CR 399) in Vulpecula - The Hanger cluster or Brocchi cluster is not a true cluster of stars but an asterism in the constellation Little Fox. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of 1.2m of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. Cr 399, Brocchi's Cluster, is also known as the “” Coathanger””. It is a distinctive asterism, but not a true star cluster. It is visible to the unaided eye off the head of Cygnus, the Swan in Vulpecula, and resolved into its namesake shape in a telescope or pair of binoculars. Image from Oschin telescope of Palomar observatory
Globular cluster M68 in Hydra - Globular cluster M68 in Hydr
Spiral galaxy M33 in the Triangle - Spiral galaxy M33 in Triangulum - M33, (NGC 598), the galaxy of the Triangle, is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the local group, just like our galaxy or Andromede galaxy. This image is a composite of two black and white images obtained from the 1.2m telescope of Mount Palomar, California. Spiral galaxy M33 is a mid - sized member of our Local Group of Galaxies. M33 is also called the Triangulum Galaxy for the constellation in which it resides. About four times smaller (in radius) than our Milky Way Galaxy and the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), it is much larger than the many of the local dwarf spheroidal galaxies. M33's proximity to M31 causes it to be thought by some to be a satellite galaxy of this more massive galaxy. M33's proximity to our Milky Way Galaxy causes it to appear more than twice the angular size of the Full Moon, and be visible with a good pair of binoculars. <BR>This image is a composite from black and white images taken with the Palomar Observatory's 48 - inch (1.2 - meter) Samuel Oschin Telescope as a part of the second National Geographic Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS II). The images were recorded on two type of glass photographic plates - one sensitive to red light and the other to blue and later they were digitized
Galaxy Cluster Abell 1656 - Coma Cluster - Wide - field image around the Coma galaxy cluster - Large field around the Coma galaxy cluster. This cluster consists of about a thousand galaxies and is located 330 million light years away in the constellation Coma Berenices (Berenice hair). This cluster is dominated by two large elliptical galaxies (NGC 4874 on the right and NGC 4889 on the left). Below the middle of the image, to the right, is the galaxy NGC 4921. Mosaic of images obtained by the Oschin telescope of 1.2m from Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. The Coma cluster (Abell 1656) is a particularly rich cluster of individual galaxies (over 1000 members), most prominently the two giant ellipticals, NGC 4874 (right) and NGC 4889 (left). NGC 4921 is the small circular galaxy below and a little to the right of the centre of the image. The remaining members are mostly smaller ellipticals. The cluster is seen towards the constellation Coma Berenices, and is actually at a distance of about 100 Mpc (330 million light years, or a redshift of 0.023) from us. Brown dwarf around the red dwarf star Gliese 229 - Brown dwarf around red dwarf Gliese 229 - First false-colored image of a brown dwarf. With a mass of 20 to 50 times that of Jupiter, but of a diameter equivalent to the gas planet, GL229B, is orbiting around the red dwarf star Gliese 229, about 18 years - light from Earth in the constellation Lievre. On the left, the observation made from the ground in adaptive optics at Mount Palomar, October 27, 1994. On the right, the image obtained by the Hubble space telescope on November 17, 1995. These two false - color telescope images reveal the faintest object ever seen around a star beyond our Sun, and the first unambiguous detection of a brown dwarf. The brown dwarf, called GL229B, orbits the red dwarf star Gliese 229, located approximately 18 light - years away in the constellation Lepus. The brown dwarf is about 20 - 50 times the mass of Jupiter, but is so dense it is about the same diameter as Jupiter (80,000 miles). Brown dwarfs are a mysterious class of long - sought objects that form the same way stars do, by condensing out of a cloud of hydrogen gas. However, they do not accumulate enough mass to sustain nuclear fusion at their core, which make stars shine. [left] - The brown dwarf (center) was first observed in far red light October 27, 1994 using the adaptive optics device and a 60 - inch reflecting telescope on Palomar Mountain in California. Another year was required to confirm that the object was actually gravitationally bound to the companion star. GL229B is at least four billion miles from its companion star, roughly the separation between the planet Pluto and our Sun. Even though a cornograph on the detector masked most of the light from the star, which is off the left edge of the image, it is so bright relative to the brown dwarf the glare floods the detector. [right] - This image of the GL229B (center) was taken with Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Planetary Camera -
Remains of supernova located about 1400 light years ago in the constellation Swan. The supernova would have exploded less than 10,000 years ago. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed - The Veil Nebula, also known as the Cygnus Loop, is a large supernova remnant, relatively faint supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. The source supernova exploded some 5000 to 8000 years ago. The distance to the nebula is not precisely known, with estimates ranging from 1400 to 2600 light years. It was discovered on 1784 September 5 by William Herschel. This image is based on data acquired by the Oschin Telescope at the Mount Palomar Observatory.: Les laces du Swan - The Veil nebula
Galaxies Maffei 1 and Maffei 2 in Cassiopee - Maffei Galaxies in Cassiopeia - Maffei 1 (right) is an elliptical galaxy, Maffei 2 (left) is a barree spiral galaxy. These two galaxies are located about 8 million light years away from Earth. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. The picture show two galaxies lying at 2.5 degrees northeast of h and Chi Persei the famous Double Cluster in Cassiopeia. Although the galaxies has been obstructed by inner galactic matters, their actual sizes are larger than 10 arc minutes, fairly large - sized neighboring galaxies. The Maffei I (on the right) is an elliptic, and the Maffei II (on the left) is classified as a bared galaxy. The galaxies are estimated about 8 million light years away. They were discovered by the Italian astronomer Paolo Maffei in 1968. Now we know about 20 galaxies belonging to Maffei Group. Star HD 209458 in Pegase - Star HD 209458 in Pegasus - This star, located in the center of the image, is about 150 years from Earth and is observable with a pair of binoculars. In orbit around this star, invisible in this image, we discovered a giant planet called Osiris (HD 209458b). This extrasolar planet of a new type is a hot Jupiter, a massive planet very close to its star. The star located in the center of this image is called HD 209458. It is similar to our Sun and lies 150 light - years from Earth. It is visible with binoculars as a seventh magnitude star in the constellation of Pegasus. In orbit around this star (but invisible on this picture) is an exoplanet named Osiris (HD 209458b). It is a hot jupiter, a giant planet orbiting very close to its star
Star cluster M46 and M47 and NGC 2438 in the stern - Open clusters M46 and M47 - M46 (NGC 2437), on the left, is a cluster of age stars located at 5400 years - light. It contains about 500 stars, 150 of which are brilliant. It is about 300 million years old. The planetary nebula NGC 2438 does not appear to belong to this cluster, and must be closer although its distance is unknown. On the right, cluster M47 (NGC 2422). Between the two clusters we can see a third one: NGC 2425. M46 and M47 are two open clusters that lie a little more than 1 degree apart in the sky in the constellation of Pupis. M46, containing planetary nebula NGC 2438, is seen at left in this photo, and M47 is at right. M47 is a bright cluster that can be seen with the unaided eye under dark skies. It is comprised of about 30 stars, and is 30 arc minutes in diameter and has an overall brightness of 4.4 magnitude

Open cluster M21 in Sagittarius - Open cluster M21 in Sagittarius - The cluster of stars M21 (NGC 6531) is composed of about sixty stars located in the constellation Sagittarius. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. The open cluster M21, or NGC 6531, in the constellation Sagittarius shows a strong central concentration and a wide range of star brightnesses, despite its limited membership of probably fewer than 60 stars. Most likely quite young (for a star cluster, that means only a few million years), its distance is uncertain. M21 is quite close on the sky to M20, the Trifid Nebula
Spiral Galaxy M31 in Andromede - Spiral galaxy M31 in Andromeda - The galaxy of Andromede is located about 2.3 million years ago - light from Earth. Two satellite galaxies accompany him: M32 (NGC 221) on the left, and M110 (NGC 205) on the lower right. Like the lactee path, the Andromede galaxy belongs to the local group, making up about thirty galaxies. Image based on data obtained with the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar. Andromeda is the nearest major galaxy to our own Milky Way Galaxy. M31 is about 2.3 million light years far from us in the constellation Andromeda. It is the biggest member in our Local Group. Its diameter is more than 150,000 light years, compared to the Milky Way's 100,000 light years. M31 has two satellite galaxies: M110 (NGC 205) the elliptic galaxy at bottom right respect M31 core and M32 (NGC 221), the bright star - like object just below the M31 core. The bright blue star at top is the 4.5th magnitude nu Andromedae. This image is based on data acquired by the Oschin Telescope at the Mount Palomar Observatory

Rosette nebula (NGC 2237) in the Unicorn - The Rosette nebula in Monoceros - The Rosette nebula is a vast cloud of dust and gas. In its center, the cluster of stars NGC 2244. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. The north is at top. Discovered by John Flamsteed about 1690, the Rosetta Nebula is a vast cloud of dust and gas, extending over an area of more than 1 degree across, or about 5 times the area covered by the full moon. Within the nebula, open star cluster NGC 2244 is situated, consisted of the young stars which recently formed from the nebula's material, and the brightest of which make the nebula shine by exciting its atoms to emit radiation. Star formation is still in progress in this vast cloud of interstellar matter. Although various values for its distance occur in the literature, an avarage value of about 5,500 light - years is generally accepted. This image is based on data acquired by the Oschin Telescope at the Mount Palomar Observatory

The dwarf planet Eris - Illustration - Dwarf planet Eris - Artwork - Artist's view of the dwarf planet Eris and its satellite Dysnomia. Eris is about three times more distant from the Sun than Pluto. The dwarf planet, formerly known as 2003 UB313 (or Xena), is now called Eris, after the Greek goddess of discord and strife. This artist's concept shows the planet catalogued as 2003 UB313 with its moon Dysnomia. Our Sun can be seen in the distance. The new planet, which is yet to be formally named, is at least as big as Pluto and about three times farther away from the Sun than Pluto. It is very cold and dark. The planet was discovered by the Samuel Oschin Telescope at the Palomar Observatory near San Diego, Calif., on Jan. 8, 2005
Nebula IC 1318 in the Swan - IC 1318 Butterfly nebula in Cygnus - IC 1318 is a very large emission nebula that surrounds the supergiant star Gamma Cygni (Sadr), visible towards the middle of the image. LDN 889 is a vast region of dark nebulae that separates the nebula on the left from Sadr. On the extreme right, another dark nebula, B343. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. Supergiant star Gamma Cygni lies at the center of the Northern Cross, famous asterism in the constellation Cygnus the Swan. Known by the proper name Sadr, the bright star also lies at the center of this gorgeous skyscape, featuring a complex of stars, dust clouds, and glowing nebulae along the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. The field of view spans over 4 degrees (eight Full Moons) on the sky and includes emission nebula IC 1318 and open star cluster NGC 6910. Left of Gamma Cyg and shaped like two glowing cosmic wings divided by a long dark dust lane, IC 1318's popular name is understandably the Butterfly Nebula. Above and left of Gamma Cyg, are the young, still tightly grouped stars of NGC 6910. Some distance estimates for Gamma Cyg place it at around 750 light - years while estimates for IC 1318 and NGC 6910 range from 2,000 to 5,000 light - years. The color image is based on data coming from a number of different photographic plates taken in 1991 and 1992 by the Palomar Observatory's 48 - inch (1.2 - meter) Samuel Oschin Telescope as a part of the second National Geographic Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS II)
Open cluster of Pleiades - Open cluster of Pleiades - The north is at top. The Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters and Messier 45, is one of the brightest and famous star clusters visible in the northern hemisphere. It consists of about 500 bright, hot, young stars that were all born at the same time between 75 and 150 million years ago within a large cloud of dust and gas. The cluster contains many stars, of which only a handful are commonly visible to the naked eye. The blue haze that accompanies them is due to very fine dust which still remains and preferentially reflects the blue light from the stars. This star cluster lies some 440 light years away from the Earth, in the constellation of Taurus. This image is based on data acquired by the Oschin Telescope at the Mount Palomar Observatory

Spiral galaxy M81 in the Great Bear - Spiral galaxy M81 in Ursa Major - The spiral galaxy M81 is located 12 million years ago - light from Earth. Its arms are home to star-forming regions while its core is surrounded by much older yellow stars. In the background at the top, an irregular dwarf galaxy, Holmberg IX. This image obtained by a 50 cm amateur telescope, in February 2010 for 23 hours of poses, shows gas filaments whose origin is uncertain. Located about 12 million light - years from our planet, M81 (NGC 3031) together with M82 (NGC 3034), NGC 3077 and NGC 2976 forms one of the most iconic groups of interacting galaxies. The M81 group has also been the subject of many studies searching for and analyzing evidence of strong interactions among its components. In 1965, Halton Arp detected an unusual looping feature near M81 while examining photographic plates produced with the 48 - inch Schmidt on Mount Palomar. Traditionally, ARP's loop has been interpreted as a tail resulting from the tidal interaction between M81 and M82. However, since its discovery that explanation has been doubted by many researchers. Interestingly, the region of the sky containing the M81 group of galaxies is filled with Galactic cirrus and ARP's loop exhibits colors and emission properties similar to those observed in Galactic cirrus clouds. This optical image suggests that the light observed at optical wavelengths is a combination of emissions from: recent star forming regions situated near M81, the extended disk of M81 and scattered light from the same Galactic cirrus that is responsible for the bulk of the far infrared emissions. Although our observations cannot exclude the presence of some material stripped from the disk of M81 (NGC 3031) and/or M82 (NGC 3034) that is chance located in our line of sight to and far behind this intruiging structure, our findings suggest that ARP's Loop is situated between the observer and M81 (

Spiral galaxy M31 in Andromede - First color photo - The first color image of spiral galaxy M31 in Andromeda - The galaxy of Andromede is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. Two satellite galaxies accompany him: M32 (NGC 221) on the left, and M110 (NGC 205) on the bottom right. Like the lactee path, the Andromede galaxy belongs to the local group, making up about thirty galaxies. This photo is the first color photo of M31. It was obtained on 11 August 1958 at the Schmidt telescope of Mount Palomar. M31 (NGC 224) is the finest and nearest large spiral galaxy in the sky, about 2 million light years away. It has several close companions, the most obvious of which are the compact elliptical galaxy M32 (NGC 221) at lower left centre here, and M110 (NGC 205) at lower right. M 31 is a member of the Local Group of about 30 galaxies that includes the Milky Way and M31 as its most massive members as well as the two Magellanic Clouds. This particular picture is of interest because it was one of the first - ever astronomical colour images and certainly the first of M31. The 120 minute exposure was made in 1958 August 11 with the Palomar 48 - inch Schmidt Telescope (now the Oschin Schmidt) by Mt Wilson and Palomar Observatories' William C. Miller. Miller used the then revolutionary Super Ansco reversal film which had a nominal speed of 100ASA. The original came to D.Malin some years ago for re - mastering, and he has now digitally re - mastered the copy he made at that time. The quality of the picture as a large digital file is quite outstanding, and is as good as any more recent image, indicative of the fine optics of a large Schmidt telescope
