Shooting star rain on LAMOST telescope - China - Geminids over LAMOST telescope - China: Geminides shooting star rain above LAMOST telescope (Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope), a 4-metre optical telescope, located on the site of the Xinglong Observatory in the Hebei region of China. December 2015. Space dust from asteroid 3200 Phaethon rained into the Earth's atmosphere, and burnt as meteors at about 100 km above Xinglong Station of National Astronomical Observatories of China, piercing the night sky over the Guoshoujing LAMOST telescope. All meteors seemed to radiate from the same point, which lies at Gemini, and that's how the meteor shower named Geminids.Over 100 meteors were captured in the composed image taken on the peak night of the 2015 Geminid meteor shower, and the brightest bolide even instantly lit up the landscape.

Constellations of Gemels and Little Dog - Constellations of Gemini and Canis Minor - Constellation of Gemels with bright stars Castor and Pollux. Below is the small constellation of the Little Dog, with the bright star Procyon. Canis Minor (the Lesser Dog) is sometimes regarded as the smaller of the two dogs of Orion the hunter. It is minor indeed, just 185 degrees square, and 71st in size of the 88 modern constellations. The most obvious and interesting object Canis Minor is its main star, the pale yellow Procyon. Its name is from the Greek, meaning 'before the dog', since it rises before the Sirius, the Dog Star. Gemini (the Twins) is a much more interesting collection of stars, easily visualised as two figures holding hands, their heads represented by the stars Castor and Pollux. The constellation is an ancient zodiacal construction, with a rich mythology vanishing in the mists of time. It is from the direction of Gemini (near Castor) that annual Geminid meteor showers radiate, around December 14

Etoile filante -Perseide - Perseid meteor - Rain d'étoiles filantes vue le 12/08/2008. Perseid meteor seem to radiate out of the same point in the constellation of Perseus in this composite exposure taken on August 12, 2008 during the Perseid Meteor Shower. The Perseids are tiny bits of dust left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle on one of its day's through the Solar system. Although the comet is now far away, the dust left behind stays in orbit around the Sun, and sometimes the Earth passes through this dust trail, causing a meteor shower. The colors in the meteor's path come from different emissions as the meteor, speeding at 132,000 miles per hour, burns up and interacts with molecules in the upper atmosphere

Crush Rays - Sunset Crepuscular Rays on Mt. Lawu - Crepuscular rays appear after sunset. Java, Indonesia, 21 July 2010. Sunset Crepuscular Rays captured on the summit of Mt. Lawu on July 21, 2010. Sunset crepuscular rays captured on the summit of Mt. Lawu on July 21, 2010. They are the rays of sunlight that appear to radiate from a single point in the sky. These rays, which stream through gaps in clouds or between other objects, are diverging columns of sunlit air separated by darker cloud - shadowed regions
A bust of an astral diety with radiate diadem from the 1rst century AD rests in a protectice crate during a preview at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on July 17, 2003. The bust will be part of an exhibit, "Petra: Lost City of Stone" which will open at the museum on October 18, 2003. The museum says the exhibit is the most comprehensive ever presented on the ancient city of Petra and its creators, the Nabataeans, and the first major cultural collaboration between Jordan and the United States. The exhibit will be dispayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum after its premiere in New York.
Spiral galaxy seen by the slice NGC 4013 in the Great Bear - Edge - on view of NGC 4013 spiral galaxy in Ursa Major - The spiral galaxy Ngc 4013 is located 55 million years - light in the constellation Big Bear. A bright star seems to radiate from this galaxy; in reality, this star is much closer and belongs to our galaxy. Edge - on view of NGC 4013 spiral galaxy located about 55 million light years in Ursa Major. In its center, the very bright star is very much closer to us than it appears and belongs to our galaxy
Spiral galaxy NGC 4013 in the Great Bear - Edge - on galaxy NGC 4013 in Ursa Major - The spiral galaxy NGC 4013 is located 55 million years - light in the constellation Big Bear. In this image, traces left by the passage of a dwarf galaxy appear as a stellar current around that galaxy. A bright star seems to radiate from this galaxy; in reality, this star is much closer and belongs to our galaxy. Edge - on view of NGC 4013 spiral galaxy located about 55 million light years in Ursa Major. This deep color image reveals an enormous faint looping structure extending over 80,000 light years from the galaxy center. This is a stream of stars coming from a smaller galaxy who merged with NGC 4013. The very bright star in the center of the galaxy is very much closer to us than it appears and belongs to our galaxy

Birth of stars in the nebula NGC 3372 - Star formation in the Carina Nebula - Detail of the nebula of the Carene seen in visible light (top) and infrared (bottom) by the Hubble space telescope. The top image shows a column of gas and dust eroded by ultraviolet radiation emitted by young stars. Jets are also visible, showing the presence of a nascent star. In the infrared image, the dust clouds radiate little, the nascent star responsible for these jets appears. NGC 3372 is located about 7000 light years away from Earth. Images obtained in July 2009. The pictures demonstrate one example of the broad wavelength range of the new Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) aboard the Hubble telescope, extending from ultraviolet to visible to infrared light. Composed of gas and dust, the pillar resides in a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7500 light - years away in the southern constellation of Carina. The pair of images shows that astronomers are given a much more complete view of the pillar and its contents when distinct details not seen at visible wavelengths are uncovered in near - infrared light. The top image, taken in visible light, shows the tip of the three - light - year - long pillar, bathed in the glow of light from hot, massive stars off the top of the image. Scorching radiation and fast winds (streams of charged particles) from these stars are sculpting the pillar and causing new stars to form within it. Streamers of gas and dust can be seen flowing off the top of the structure. Nestled inside this dense structure are fledgling stars. They cannot be seen in this image because they are hidden by a wall of gas and dust. Although the stars themselves are invisible, one of them is providing evidence of its existence. Thin puffs of material can be seen travelling to the left and to the right of a dark notch in the centre of the pillar. The matter is part of
Spiral Galaxy M66 in the Lion - Spiral galaxy M66 in Leo - M66 (NGC 3627) is a spiral galaxy located at a distance of about 35 million years - light. M66, with its neighbors M65 and NGC 3628, forms a remarkable triplet of galaxies, called the Lion Triplet or the M66 Group. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. The unusual spiral galaxy, Messier 66, is located at a distance of about 35 million light - years in the constellation of Leo. Together with Messier 65 and NGC 3628, Messier 66 is one third of the Leo Triplet, a trio of interacting spiral galaxies, part of the larger Messier 66 group. Messier 66 wins out in size over its fellow triplets - - it is about 100 000 light - years across. Messier 66 is the proud owner of exclusive asymmetric spiral arms which seem to climb above the galaxy's main disc and an apparently displaced nucleus. This asymmetry is unusual; most often, dense waves of gas, dust and newly born stars wind about the galaxy's centre in a symmetric way. Astronomers believe that Messier 66's once orderly shape has most likely been distorted by the gravitational pull of its two neighbours. Hubble has imaged Messier 66's striking dust lanes and bright star clusters along the spiral arms in fine detail with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. Star clusters - - pictured in the blue and pinkish regions of the image - - are key tools for astronomers since they are used as indicators of how the parent galaxies assembled over time. Messier 66 boasts a remarkable record of supernovae explosions. The spiral galaxy has hosted three supernovae since 1989, the latest one occurring in 2009. A supernova is a stellar explosion that may momentarily outshine its entire host galaxy. It then fades away over a period lasting several weeks or months. During its very short life the supernova radiates as much energy as the Sun would radiate over a period of about 10 billion years
Planetary nebula NGC 6537 in Sagittarius - Hubble observations have revealed huge waves sculpted in the Red Spider nebula. This warm and windy planetary nebula harbours one of the hottest stars in the Universe and its powerful stellar winds generate waves 100 billion kilometers high - intimidating for even the bravest space surfers. The Red Spider Nebula, NGC 6537, is a striking 'butterfly' or bipolar (two - lobed) planetary nebula. Planetary nebulae are the glowing embers of ordinary stars, such as our Sun. At the end of their lives these stars expel most of their material into space, often forming a two - lobed structure as in the case of the Red Spider. These waves are driven by stellar winds radiating from the hot central star, much as a wind passing over a lake can generate waves on the water. The waves reach peaks 100 billion kilometers high and must have been produced by a powerful wind blowing with a speed of 2000 - 4500 kilometers per second (about 7 - 16 million km/hr). The waves themselves move outwards at a slower rate of 300 km/s (about 1 million km/hr). To add to these challenging climatic conditions, this nebula is not only windy, but also hot. The temperature of the gas waves is a scorching 10,000 K Detailed investigations of the Hubble image have shown that the central white dwarf, the remaining compact core of the original star, must have a temperature of at least half a million degrees, making it one of the hottest stars known. It is so hot that it is invisible to Hubble's eye and emits primarily in X - rays. The waves are generated by supersonic shocks formed when the local gas is compressed and heated in front of the rapidly expanding lobes. Atoms caught in the shocks radiate the visible light seen in this image. The process appears to have been underway long enough to make the edges of the lobe walls look as if they have started to fracture into wave crests. The Red Spider Nebula is located about 3000 light - years away in the constell
Purfleet. This fair plan describes the north bank of the River Thames from Purfleet and West Thurrock, at the bottom, to Upminster, at the top. The manuscript is covered with pencil rays. Radiating from trigonometrical stations, these were used for measuring and plotting topographical features. Field boundaries infilled with stripes depict cultivated land. Marshes and untilled agricultural land are identified by 'open dotting' at the bottom of the map
