The formation of Saturn's rings - Artist's view - Saturn moon break up - A satellite of Saturn breaks giving birth to the rings of Saturn and has small satellites
Saturn above the clouds of Titan - Illustration - Saturn from atop Titan's hydrocarbon haze - Artist's view of the planet Saturn view 80 km above the surface of his satellite Titan. In the plane of the rings of the planet appear from left to right the satellites Enceladus, Dione, Tethys and Rhea. Saturn and its rings would be a majestic sight lording over Titan's hydrocarbon haze. The viewpoint is from 50 miles above Titan's surface and three - quarters of a million miles away from Saturn itself. Four of Saturn's smaller satellites can also be seen along the ring plane: left to right are Enceladus, Dione, Tethys and Rhea. Technically, the orange clouds mark the beginning of Titan's condensate haze, which consists of ethane, methane, nitrogen, and a variety of hydrocarbons known collectively as tholin. These gases and hydrocarbons extend upward another 250 miles, resulting in a bluish, earthlike sky, albeit darker due to Titan's great distance from the Sun. Tholin is created by the interaction of the nitrogen - rich gases with ultraviolet light from the Sun and ultimately precipitates all the way down to Titan's surface. Notwithstanding its flame - like colors, this haze is chilled to minus 330o F

The Cassini and Saturn probe - Cassini spacecraft at Saturn - Artist's view of the Cassini probe above the northern hemisphere of Saturn. This illustration shows Cassini above Saturn's northern hemisphere prior to making one of its Grand Finale dives. During Cassini's Grand Finale, the spacecraft will make 22 orbits around Saturn that carry the spacecraft over the planet's north before diving between Saturn and its rings. At the conclusion of this final set of daring orbits, the spacecraft will plunge into Saturn's atmosphere, ending its mission on Sept. 15, 2017.
Geyser sur Enceladus - Artist view - Water geyser on Enceladus - Artist view - Artist view of an ice geyser on the surface of the Enceladus satellite. In the sky, the planet Saturn and its satellite Mimas. Liquid water reaches the surface of Enceladus' south pole and drives a massive plume of ice crystals into the sky. The combination of Enceladus' low surface gravity and the geyser's force accelerate the crystals to escape velocity, where sunlight breaks the water molecules down into their constituent atoms of hydrogen and oxygen. Saturn itself appears low on the horizon due to the proximity to Enceladus' pole. The small object immediately to Saturn's left is another icy moon named Mimas. Somewhat smaller than Enceladus and closer to Saturn, Mimas sprints around Saturn in slightly less than one Earth day. In March 2006 Nasa's Cassini probe revealed evidence of water - driven geysers on the surface of Enceladus. At first glance Enceladus doesn't seem to be a likely host for liquid water as the surface is extremely cold, about - 330* F. However, tidal forces from Saturn's massive gravity alternately pull and push on Enceladus 'interior, creating enough heat to melt the water ice immediately beneath the surface. This water is believed to periodically break through the surface as geysers, similar to Yellowstone's Old Faithful. There are only three other places in the Solar System where this kind of geologic activity is known to exist: our own Earth, Jupiter's satellite Io, and Neptune's satellite Triton. What makes Enceladus especially interesting is that this the most compelling evidence yet for liquid water - - a requirement for life - - on any world beyond the Earth

However, tidal forces from Saturn's massive gravity alternately pull and push on Enceladus 'interior, creating enough heat to melt the water ice immediately beneath the surface. This heated water is believed to periodically erupt like a volcano, a process known as cryovolcanism. There are only three other places in the Solar System where active volcanism is known to exist: our own Earth, Jupiter's satellite Io, and Neptune's satellite Triton. What makes Enceladus especially interesting is that this the most compelling evidence yet for liquid water - - a requirement for life - - on any world beyond the Earth

Saturn seen from its satellite Japet - Saturn from Iapetus - The planet Saturn accompanied by three satellites (from left to right Tethys, Rhea and Dione) seen from the icy surface of Japet. In this image Saturn dominates Iapetus' velvet black sky framed by three inner moons. Left to right are Tethys, Rhea and Dione. Less than half the size of the Earth's moon, ice - covered Iapetus is one of the few places in the Solar System that offers a good view of Saturn's rings. This is because Iapetus' orbit is inclined almost 15 degrees to Saturn's equator. With the exception of Phoebe, none of Saturn's other satellites offer such a vantage point. Unlike haze - shrouded Titan, Iapetus has no atmosphere to speak of and is believed to be composed almost entirely of water ice

Saturn and satellites seen by Voyager - Saturn system montage - Mounting made from the photos obtained by the Voyager 1 and 2 probes showing Saturn accompanied by its satellites. Enceladus is the largest satellite on the image, then clockwise we find Dione, Rhea, Titan (top right), Japet, Tethys, and Mimas. This montage of images of the Saturnian system was prepared from an assemblage of images taken by the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecrafts during their Saturn encounter. The large satellite at left is Enceladus, followed in clockwise order by Dione, Rhea, Titan (in top right corner), Iapetus, Tethys, & Mimas
Saturn seen at equinox - Saturn during Equinox - Saturn seen by the Cassini probe on August 12, 2009, 1.25 days after the exact date of Saturn equinox. The images that make up this mosaic were obtained at a distance of 847,000 km from the planet. Several satellites are visible in this image: Janus (lower left), Epimethee (lower middle), Pandora (on the right of the image, outside the rings) and Atlas (on the right, inside the F ring). Seen from our planet, the view of Saturn's rings during equinox is extremely foreshortened and limited. But in orbit around Saturn, Cassini spacecraft had no such problems. From 20 degrees above the ring plane, Cassini's wide angle camera shot 75 exposures in succession for this mosaic showing Saturn, its rings, and a few of its moons a day and a half after exact Saturn equinox, when the sun's disk was exactly overhead at the planet's equator. The novel illumination geometry that accompanies equinox lowers the sun's angle to the ring plane, significantly darkens the rings, and causes out - of - plane structures to look anomalously bright and to cast shadows across the rings. These scenes are possible only during the few months before and after Saturn's equinox which occurs only once in about 15 Earth years. Also at equinox, the shadows of the planet's expansive rings are compressed into a single, narrow band cast onto the planet as seen in this mosaic. The images comprising the mosaic, taken over about eight hours, were extensively processed before being joined together. At this time so close to equinox, illumination of the rings by sunlight reflected off the planet vastly dominates any meager sunlight falling on the rings. Hence, the half of the rings on the left illuminated by planetshine is, before processing, much brighter than the half of the rings on the right. On the right, it is only the vertically extended parts of the rings that catch any substantial sunlight. With no enhancement, the rings woul

Tethys, Saturn satellite, seen by the Cassini probe - Saturn's moon Tethys seen by Cassini spacecraft - The Tethys satellite photographed by the Cassini probe on August 30, 2007 at a distance of 97,000 km. Tethys is about 1070 km in diameter. At the top left of the picture is the gigantic impact crater Odysseus, which measures 450 km in diameter. The vast expanse of the crater Odysseus spreads out below Cassini in this mosaic view of Saturn's moon Tethys. The crater (450 kilometers or 280 miles across) is a remarkably well - preserved example of an ancient multi - ringed impact basin: the outer ring is defined by steep, cliff - like walls that descend to generally broad internal terraces. The inner ring is formed by a prominent, crown - shaped, 140 - kilometer (88 - mile) diameter circular band of icy mountains. Multi - ring basins are seen on rocky bodies as well as icy ones. The complex internal structure and multi - ringed nature of these very large basins are believed to arise from the rebound of intense shock waves that penetrated the body at the time of impact. Tethys is 1,071 kilometers (665 miles) across. This mosaic was assembled from four clear filter, narrow - angle camera images. The view is an orthographic projection centered on 3 degrees south latitude, 119 degrees west longitude and has a resolution of 572 meters (0.35 mile) per pixel. An orthographic view is most like the view seen by a distant observer looking through a telescope. North is up. The view was obtained by the Cassini spacecraft on Aug. 30, 2007, from a distance of approximately 97,000 kilometers (60,000 miles) and at a sun - Tethys - spacecraft, or phase, angle of 51 degrees
Tethys, Saturn satellite, seen by the Cassini probe - Saturn's moon Tethys seen by Cassini spacecraft: The Tethys satellite photographed by the Cassini probe on 11 April 2015 has a distance of 53,000 km from the satellite. Tethys is about 1070 km in diameter. - This enhancement-color mosaic of Saturn's icy moon Tethys shows a range of features on the moon's trailing hemisphere. Tethys is tidally locked to Saturn, so the trailing hemisphere is the side of the moon that always faces opposite its direction of motion as it orbits the planet - Images taken using clear, green, infrared and ultraviolet spectral filters were combined to create the view, which highlights subtle color differences across Tethys' surface at wavelengths not visible to human eyes. The moon's surface is fairly uniform in natural color - The color of the surface changes conspicuously across the disk, from yellowish hues to nearly white. These broad color changes are affected by a number of external processes. First, Saturn's diffuse E-ring preferentially bombards Tethys' leading hemisphere, towards the right side of this image, with ice bright ice grains. At the same time, charged particles from Saturn's radiation belt bombard the surface on the trailing side, causing color changes due to chemical alteration of the materials there. The albedo - a measure of the surface's reflectivity - drops by 10 to 15 percent from the moon's leading side to the trailing side. Similar global color patterns exist on other Saturnian moons - This mosaic is an orthographic projection constructed from 52 Cassini images obtained on April 11, 2015 with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera. Resolution is about 1,000 feet (300 meters) per pixel. The images were obtained at a distance of approximately 33,000 miles (53,000 kilometers) from Tethys
Saturn view of the surroundings of Dione - Illustration - Saturn from the vicinity of Dione - The planet Saturn seen from the surroundings of its satellite Dione. Dione, visible in the foreground, has a diameter of about 1100 km and is mainly composed of ice. In the background, another Saturn ice satellite is visible, Tethys. This is how Saturn might appear from near Dione, one of Saturn's inner icy satellites. Dione is about 700 miles in diameter and is believed to be composed primarily of water ice along with lesser amounts of silicate rocks. In this image, Dione is in the foreground orbiting about 197 thousand miles above Saturn's cloud tops. Further towards Saturn at a distance of 50 thousand miles from Dione is Tethys, another icy moon, slightly smaller than Dione. Tethys is silhouetted against the “” ring shine”” on Saturn's night side - - reflected sunlight on the cloud tops from Saturn's rings

Similar global color patterns exist on other Saturnian moons - Mountains on the floor of the 280 mile- (450 km-) wide Odysseus impact basin are visible at upper right, around the two o'clock position - This mosaic is an orthographic projection constructed from 52 Cassini images obtained on April 11, 2015 with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera. Resolution is about 1,000 feet (300 meters) per pixel. The images were obtained at a distance of approximately 33,000 miles (53,000 kilometers) from Tethys

View of Saturn's rings as they surround the planet. Cassini.
Titan, Saturn satellite seen by Cassini - Saturn's moon Titan as seen by Cassini spacecraft: Visible and infrared composite image of Titan taken by the Cassini probe on August 21, 2014. View of methane and ethane lakes lit by the Sun. - This near-infrared, color mosaic from Nasa's Cassini spacecraft shows the sun glinting off of Titan's north polar seas. - The sunglint, also called a specular reflection, is the bright area near the 11 o'clock position at upper left. This mirror-like reflection, known as the specular point, is in the south of Titan's largest sea, Kraken Mare, just north of an island archipelago separating two separate parts of the sea - This particular sunglint was so bright as to saturate the detector of Cassini's Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) instrument, which captures the view. - The southern portion of Kraken Mare (the area surrounding the specular feature toward upper left) displays a “” bathtub ring”” - a bright margin of evaporate deposits - which indicates that the sea was larger at some point in the past and has become smaller due to evaporation. The deposits are material left behind after the methane & ethane liquid evaporates, somewhat akin to the saline crust on a salt flat
Uranus - Illustration - The planet Uranus and its system of rings. This image suggests how Uranus might look from a position in space several hundred thousand miles above its south pole. Like Saturn and Jupiter, Uranus is a Gas Giant, composed primarily of hydrogen and helium gases surrounding a relatively small, dense core of molten rock and metal. Its bluish color is due to the presence of methane in its upper atmosphere. Also like Saturn and Jupiter, Uranus has rings. However Uranus' rings are over three orders of magnitude dimmer than Saturn's; where Saturn's rings are almost white, Uranus' rings are more like the color of charcoal. Uranus 'rings are so dim that they went undetected from 1781, when the English astronomer William Herschel first observed Uranus through a telescope, until 1977 when astronomers watched as a star passing behind Uranus appeared to blink several times, caused by the ten rings surrounding the planet. One bizarre aspect of Uranus is that its axis of rotation is tipped beyond 90 degrees in relation to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. This puts Uranus' north and south poles, relative to the Sun, where the other planets have their equators
Saturn seen by the Cassin probe - Saturn seen by Cassini spacecraft on october 10 2013: Saturn seen by the Cassini probe on October 10, 2013. - A swing high above Saturn by Nasa's Cassini spacecraft revealed this stately view of the golden-hued planet and its main rings. The view is in natural color, as human eyes would have seen it. This mosaic was made from 36 images in three color filters obtained by Cassini's imaging science subsystem on Oct. 10, 2013 - A bright, narrow wave of clouds around 42 degrees north latitude appears to be some of the turbulent aftermath of a giant storm that reached its violent peak in early 2011. The mysterious six-sided weather pattern known as the hexagon is visible around Saturn's north pole - The rings shown here include Saturn's main rings. The rings known as the C, B and A rings - listed here in order of closeness to Saturn - are easily seen. The F ring is also there, but not easily seen without enhancing the contrast of the image. (Rings were named in order of their discovery rather than their position around Saturn.) The rings also cast a shadow on Saturn at the limb of the planet in the lower right quadrant

Saturn en jour seen by Cassini - Backlit Saturn seen by Cassini - Image obtained by the Cassini probe on October 17, 2012 at a distance of 800,000 km from the planet. At the bottom left of the image, the two brilliant dots are the Enceladus and Tethys satellites. Nasa's Cassini spacecraft has delivered a glorious view of Saturn, taken while the spacecraft was in Saturn's shadow. The cameras were turned toward Saturn and the sun so that the planet and rings are backlit. (The sun is behind the planet, which is shielding the cameras from direct sunlight.) In addition to the visual splendor, this special, very - high - phase viewing geometry lets scientists study ring and atmosphere phenomena not easily seen at a lower phase. Also captured in this image are two of Saturn's moons: Enceladus and Tethys. Both appear on the left side of the planet, below the rings. Enceladus is closer to the rings; Tethys is below and to the left. This view looks toward the non - illuminated side of the rings from about 19 degrees below the ring plane. Images taken using infrared, red and violet spectral filters were combined to create this enhanced - color view. The images were obtained with the Cassini spacecraft wide - angle camera on Oct. 17, 2012 at a distance of approximately 500,000 miles (800,000 kilometers) from Saturn. Image scale at Saturn is about 30 miles per pixel (50 kilometers per pixel)
Brown dwarf & debris ring from an oblique perspective - Artist's view of a brown dwarf star about 60 times the mass of Jupiter, surrounded by a disc of dust and rocks. In the foreground, a primitive exoplanet enlighted by the star. A small, barren planet orbits obliquely to the plane of a massive set of concentric dust rings surrounding a brown dwarf of about 60 Jupiter masses. These rings are evocative of Saturn's famous rings of rock and ice, however there is likely no ice in the rings around this dwarf. Recent observations have revealed that some brown dwarfs may be surrounded by rings of dust. While the origin of these rings, and the brown dwarfs themselves, is unclear, it's thought that material from these rings may even coalesce into planets, providing some brown dwarfs with their own solar systems
Saturn en jour vue par Cassini - Backlit Saturn seen by Cassini - Mosaic of 141 photos obtained by the Cassini probe on 19 July 2013 at a distance of 1.2 million km from the planet. The Cassini probe was then in the shadow of the Planet Saturn; this portrait of the Giant Planet highlights its ring system and seven of its satellites appear in the image. The planets Mars, Venus and Earth are also visible. On July 19, 2013, Nasa's Cassini spacecraft slipped into Saturn's shadow and turned to image the planet, seven of its moons, its inner rings - and, in the background, our home planet, Earth. With both Cassini's wide-angle and narrow-angle cameras aimed at Saturn, Cassini was able to capture 323 images in just over four hours. This final mosaic uses 141 of those wide-angle images. Images taken using the red, green and blue spectral filters of the wide-angle camera were combined and mosaicked together to create this natural-color view. This image spans about 404,880 miles (651,591 kilometers) across. In the lower right of the mosaic, in between the bright blue E ring and the faint but defined G ring, is the pale blue dot of our planet, Earth. Earth's twin, Venus, appears as a bright white dot in the upper left quadrant of the mosaic, also between the G and E rings. Mars also appears as a faint red dot embedded in the outer edge of the E ring, above and to the left of Venus. Cassini was approximately 746,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) from Saturn when the images in this mosaic were taken.

Saturn rings seen in ultraviolet by Cassini - Saturn's rings in utraviolet - Saturn rings seen in ultraviolet by the Cassini probe. The colours indicate a different distribution of the material within the rings. This false - color image of Saturn's main rings was made by combining data from multiple star occultations using the Cassini ultraviolet imaging spectrograph. During occultations, scientists observe the brightness of a star as the rings pass in front of the star. This provides a measurement of the amount of ring material between the spacecraft and the star. Cassini has given scientists the most detailed view yet of Saturn's densely packed B ring. Cassini found that this part of the rings is densely packed with clumps, called self - gravity wakes, separated by almost empty gaps. These clumps in Saturn's B ring are neatly organized and constantly colliding, which surprised scientists. The clumps in Saturn's B ring, 30 to 50 meters (100 to 160 feet) across, are too small to be seen directly. However, scientists can map the distribution, shape and orientation of the clumps. Colors in this image indicate the orientation of clumps, and brightness indicates the density of ring particles. The formation of wakes is strongest in the bluer regions, where ring particles clump together in tilted wakes. Particles in the central yellow regions are too densely packed for any starlight to pass through. The ultraviolet imaging spectrograph measured the flickering of the star Alpha Arae as it passed by the rings Nov. 9 and 10, 2006
Saturn against day seen by Cassini - Mosaic of 165 photos obtained by the Cassini probe on September 15, 2006 has a distance of 2.2 million km from the planet. The probe remained 12 hours in Saturn's shadow, allowing it to study Saturn's rings under a particular light. During these observations, two new rings of particles were discovered near ring G. The ring system of rings is composed from the closest to Saturn to the outermost by ring D, then C, B, the division of Cassini, A with the division of Encke, F, G and E. On this view where the contrast has been exaggerated, rings G and E are visible.
The Cassini - Huygens probe crosses the rings of Saturn - Cassini - Huygens spacecraft crossing Saturn's rings - Artist's view of the Cassini probe as he crossed the rings of Saturn. The Huygens European module is attached to the probe. The Cassini-Huygens probe was launched on 15 October 1997 and has been placed in orbit around Saturn since 1 July 2004. The Cassini/Huygens spacecraft makes a dangerous journey through Saturn's debris filled ring plane before entering orbit around the planet
Saturn by Voyager 2 - Rings in fake colors - Composition differences within Saturn's rings. Voyager 2 - Image in false colors made by the Voyager 2 probe on August 17, 1981 at a distance of 8.9 million km from the planet. This image has been reconstructed from 3 black and white photos taken through the UV, green and orange filters. The contrasts were exaggerated. The different colors correspond to differences in the chemical composition of the particles that make up the rings. Possible variations in chemical composition from one part of Saturn's ring system to another are visible in this Voyager 2 picture as subtle color variations that can be recorded with special computer - processing techniques. This highly enhanced color view was assembled from clear, orange and ultraviolet frames obtained Aug. 17 from a distance of 8.9 million kilometers (5.5 million miles). In addition to the previously known blue color of the C - ring and the Cassini Division, the picture shows additional color differences between the inner B - ring and outer region (where the spokes form) and between these and the A - ring
