Shooting Star Rain - Leonides - 2001 Leonid Meteor Storm - Shooting Stars and Galaxies of the Great and Small Magellan Cloud. November 19, 2001. The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are framed by the amazing meteor storm of 2001 Nov 19. The car above the Large Cloud was nearly as bright as the Full Moon and left a trail which persisted for over ten minutes. This 27 minute composite is made from three 9-minute exposures using a 35 mm Nikkor lens. 2001 Leonid Meteor Storm (Uluru, Australia)
Le Groupe local - The Local Group - The Lactee Way and its neighbors seen from about 700,000 years of light from the Sun. The Local Group contains about 30 galaxies. The position of the Sun is indicated by a red dot. The Milky Way and its neighbors as seen from a location about 700,000 light-years from the Sun. The nearest galaxies are the two Magellanic clouds, beyond them is the spiral galaxy M33. There are about 30 members of the local group but not all show up in this perspective. The location of the Sun is marked by a red dot
Paranal Observatory - Chile - Paranal Observatory - Chile - The lactee road above the Paranal Observatory in Chile. 360 degree Panorama of ESO - Paranal Observatory platform. The four 8m (UT) and four 1.8 m (AT) diameter telescopes of the VLT are all observing under the Milky Way arch during this very dark Southern hemisphere spring night. The large (LMC) and small (SMC) Magellanic clouds are visible to the left of the picture while another galaxy, Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is also visible just to the right of UT4. Bright Jupiter is high in the sky. The picture also shows two 'astronomical' lights, the zodiacal light crossing the Milky Way center vertically (just at the left of the middle of the image, above AT3) and the Gegenschein, usually very difficult to observe, below Jupiter on the right hand side of the image
Irregular Galaxy of the Little Magellan Cloud (NGC 292) - The Small Magellanic Cloud - The galaxy of the Little Magellan Cloud is about 240,000 light years from Earth in the southern constellation of Toucan. It's one of the closest galaxies of the Lactee Way. Two globular clusters are visible in this image, on the right the Toucan cluster, at the top of the galaxy the NGC 362 cluster. Image obtained by the 1.2m UK Schmidt telescope from Siding Spring, Australia. The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is the second nearest galaxy to the Milky Way, (the LMC being the nearest) and is at the distance of about 240,000 light years, quite close enough for it to be resolved into individual stars on this colour picture made from plates taken on the UK Schmidt Telescope. The shape of the SMC defies description and it is therefore classified as an 'irregular' galaxy. The large globular cluster at right is 47 Tucanae, while a smaller one at the top of the picture is NGC 362. It is about 30,000 light years distant, twice as far away as 47 Tuc
Comete McNaught (C/2006 P1) - Comete McNaught (C/2006 P1) - View of the McNaught comet and galaxies of the Great Magellan Cloud (top) and the Little Magellan Cloud (bottom)
Large and Small Magellan Clouds - Large and Small Magellanic clouds - These two irregular galaxies are close to our galaxy. Visible in the southern hemisphere, they are located approximately 160,000 (Grand Cloud, right) and 240,000 light years (Small Cloud, left). The Magellanic Clouds are the nearest galaxies to the Milky Way, about 170,000 and 240,000 light years distant respectively. They are in the far southern sky, practically invisible from northern latitudes, and their low surface brightness makes them difficult to see unless they are high in the sky. Both Magellanic Clouds are less than 25 degrees from the South Celestial Pole and are visible at some time on any clear, dark night from Siding Spring, where this picture was taken. To the dark adapted eye the Magellanic Clouds look like detached pieces of the Milky Way, but this apparent detachment is misleading because both are in orbit around it. Although the Magellanic Clouds are separate galaxies they are interacting with each other and with the Milky Way itself. Already the SMC has been substantially disrupted by this process, and the LMC distorted. Eventually the galaxies will merge with each other and with the Milky Way itself
The Galaxy of Andromede - Illustration - The Andromeda galaxy. Artwork - Artist's view of the Andromede galaxy with a globular cluster in the foreground. In the background, a companion galaxy and further, the lactee path and the clouds of Magellan. This is an acrylic painting with a few digital additions. It shows the Andromeda Galaxy, M31, the nearest large spiral system to our own Milky Way, which is comparable in size. Looking over the shoulder of the great galaxy, we see one of its small elliptical companion galaxies, then the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds, about two and a half million light years away. In the foreground is one of M31's many orbiting globular star clusters

Milky way all around the horizon - Panorama of 360 degrees. The lactee path blends with the horizon line. In the sky, the three brightest galaxies visible on Earth: the two galaxies of the Magellan Cloud, and opposite it towards the right middle of the image, the galaxy of Andromede. 360 degrees panorama. The following image was taken at new Moon (No Moon light), middle of the night (minimum zodiacal light effect), in the Atacama desert close to Paranal observatory (no light pollution). The chosen place for this picture has the particularity to be located at a latitude which value is close to the declination of the galactic southern pole. The picture was therefore also taken when the galactic pole passes at zenith, ensuring that there is no Milky Way up in the sky. The Large (LMC) and Small (SMC) Magellanic clouds are visible to the left, Orion constellation with Barnard loop to the right, California Nebula and 'tiny' Andromeda galaxy to the right while the Milky Way is visible all around the image on the horizon line

Milky way all around the horizon and Gegenschein - Fisheye view of the southern sky. The lactee path blends with the horizon line. In the sky, the three brightest galaxies visible on Earth: the two galaxies of the Magellan Cloud, and opposite it towards the right middle of the image, the galaxy of Andromede. Crossing the image on the right, the gegenschein, the blade glow made up of dust reflecting the light of the sun, observable only in a dense sky of any parasite light. The bright spot near the center of the image is Jupiter Planet. When all these conditions are met, being very close to what the “” darkest””” sky could be, the very faint Gegenschein becomes visible. Like the zodiacal light, the gegenschein is sunlight reflected by interplanetary dust. Most of this dust is orbiting the sun in about the ecliptic plane. The Gegenschein is clearly visible covering most of the right side of the picture. The Large (LMC) and Small (SMC) Magellanic clouds are visible to the left, Orion constellation with Barnard loop to the top, California Nebula and 'tiny' Andromeda galaxy to the right while the Milky Way is visible all around the image on the horizon line. Bright jupiter is visible near the center of the image and bright red Eta Carina Nebula is rising on the horizon line at the very left
Laser shooting at the Paranal Observatory - The VLT Laser Guide Star - View from the LGS (Laser Guide Star), a laser beam launches from the Yepun (UT4) telescope of the VLT. This laser creates an artificial star in the high atmosphere at about 90 km altitude. This repere is analysed and each variation of turbulence in the atmosphere is detected and corrected by the adaptive optics of the telescope. On the left, the two galaxies of the Magellan Cloud, on the right, the dome of the VST (VLT Survey Telescope). A 50 cm wide yellow laser beam is coming out of Yepun, (UT4) of the Very Large Telescope. It is used to create a yellow artificial star at 95 km of altitude which helps the adaptive optics to measure and correct the atmosphere's blurring effect. On the left, the two Magellanic Clouds, on the right, the VST dome

Constellation of Carene and other constellations of the southern hemisphere - Southern constellations with Large and Small Magellanic clouds - Carene, cameleon, flying fish, painter, seam, table, reticule, bird of paradise, octant, male hydra, Toucan and part of the horlog
Octant Constellation - Octans Constellation - It is in this constellation that the star Sigma octantis indicates the southern Celestial pole, but this star is too small to be a good repere, being barely visible to the naked eye. Lower left, the Little Magellan Cloud. Octans is notable mainly as the location of the south celestial pole. Its star Sigma Octantis is the closest naked - eye star to the pole, but it is so faint that it is practically useless as a polar star for navigation purposes. On bottom left, the Small Magellic cloud is visible
Telescope Yepun - Paranal Observatory, Chile - Yepun and the Magellanic clouds - Paranal Observatory, Chile: The 8,2m diameter telescope Yepun and an auxiliary telescope seen on August 8, 2014. In the sky the clouds of Magellan. The four 8m telescopes telescopes, named Antu (Sun), Kueyen (Moon), Melipal (Southern Cross), and Yepun (Venus) form a very versatile observatory. They can be used as a single large telescope that adds (incoherently) the light from all four, in order to achieve the light gathering ability of a single 16m telescope. Also, their light can be combined in a coherent manner in order to achieve a solving power equivalent to the one of a telescope with a diameter as large as the baseline between the units. Of course, all the telescopes can be used individually, which is usually the default mode of operation

In the sky, the three brightest galaxies visible on Earth: the two galaxies of the Magellan Cloud, and opposite it to the top right of the image, the galaxy of Andromede. A laser shot from one of the domes of the VLT is visible as well as the gegenschein, the blade glow consisting of dust reflecting the light of the sun, observable only in a dense sky of any parasite light. A fish-eye view of southern sky in Chile. Milky way is visible along the 360 degrees of the horizon line. Also visible are Gegenschein at zenith, Paranal observatory with Laser Guide Star, and the three brightest galaxies visible on earth (the large Magellanic clouds and Andromeda galaxy)
Constellation of Eridan - Constellation of Eridanus - View from the Hyadas to the Hydra Male. In the center is the great constellation of Eridan. The brightest stars visible here are Rigel, Sirius, Canopus and Achernar. In the center of image is the Eridanus constellation. Brightest stars visible are Rigel (top in Orion); Sirius (top left); Canopus (below) and Achernar (bottom center). Eridanus (the Celestial River) is very well named; since it winds its way over an enormous area of the sky. It is the 6th largest constellation (almost 1140 square degrees) and wanders over a huge range of Declination. The river runs from close to the celestial equator (which runs through Orion's Belt) to its brightest star Achernar (a Eri; from the English for 'river's end'); which is at 57* south declination
Cluster of stars NGC 299 in Toucan - Open cluster NGC 299 in Tucana: NGC 299 is an open cluster located in the galaxy of the Little Magellan Cloud. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 299 is an open star cluster located within the Small Magellanic Cloud just under 200 000 light-years away. Open clusters such as this are collections of stars weakly bound by the shackles of gravity, all of which formed from the same massive molecular cloud of gas and dust. Because of this, all the stars have the same age and composition, but vary in their mass because they formed at different positions within the cloud. This unique property not only ensures a spectacular sight when viewed through a sophisticated instrument attached to a telescope such as Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, but gives astronomers a cosmic laboratory in which to study the formation and evolution of stars - a process that is thought to depend strongly on a star's mass
Constellation Toucan - Constellation of Tucana - Constellation of Toucan near the galaxy of the Little Magellan Cloud. Tucana, represents the Toucan (Rhamphastos toco, a large - billed tropical bird), and was named by Johann Bayer in 1603. It was also known to some astronomers as Anser Americanus, the American Goose, as late as the 1870s. The constellation is circumpolar (never sets) for most of the southern hemisphere, and lies south of Phoenix, bordering on Octans which includes the south celestial pole. There are no named stars in Tucana, but it contains one of the finest globular clusters in the sky, 47 Tucanae. This is named for a star but is easily seen to be diffuse with the unaided eye. By chance 47 Tuc is seen alongside the much more distant Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a satellite of the Milky Way
Southern constellations around the Clock - Southern constellations around Horologium - Southern constellations around the Clock. The two bright stars are Canopus (bottom) and Achernar. This wide angle image includes Horologium, Phoenix and Pictor, insignificant constellations roughly centred on an arc of delination 50* south, but at a scale too small to show the star identifications and stick figures. Horologium, the Pendulum Clock (originally l'Horloge and then Horologium Oscillitorium), was a constellation introduced by Abbe Nicolas Louis de Lacaille during his stay at the Cape of Good Hope between 1751 and 1752. It was named to honor Christian Huygens as the inventor of this type of clock, but the idea for such a method of regulating time came from Galileo. Lacaille's constellation drawing shows a remarkably detailed dial, weights and a pendulum that has little apparent connection with the scattering of faint stars in this part of the sky. There are no named stars and little else in Horologium to attract the eye of the casual observer. Phoenix, the Phoenix, is a long - lived mythological, eagle - like bird with vivid plumage. The word has entered the language as an entity that is able to resurrect itself after a firey death in its nest. The cycle of death and rebirth may have symbolised the rising and setting of the Sun. On the sky Phoenix is hemmed in on two sides by other birds in Grus and Tucana and a large snake in the form of Eridanus. The constellation was invented by the Dutch navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman, and first appeared in Johan Beyer's altas of 1603. The only named star in Phoenix is Ankaa. Pictor was also named by Lacaille during his sojourn at the Cape of Good Hope. He originally called it le Easel et la Palette, the easel and palette and later Equuleus Pictorius, soon shortened to Pictor. It requires the imagination of an artist to find anything like an easle here. The constellation runs between Ca

Globular cluster 47 Toucan - The globular cluster 47 Tucanae, NGC 104 - The globular cluster 47 Toucan (or NGC 104) is visible to the naked eye from the southern hemisphere. Located about 15000 years ago - light it contains several million stars, some of which are among the older stars known today. At the top right of the image, part of the galaxy of the Little Magellan Cloud; under NGC 104, a small globular cluster, NGC 121. Discovered by Abbe Nicholas Louis de Lacaille on September 14, 1751. NGC 104, better known as 47 Tucanae, is the second largest and second brightest globular cluster in the skies, outshone only by another southern globular, Omega Centauri (NGC 5139). As its name “” 47 Tucanae”” indicates, this object was first cataloged as a star and numbered the 47th in Tucana. Although a conspicuous naked - eye object, it is situated so much south at its declination of - 72 deg, that it was not discovered as a deepsky object before 1751, when Abbe Lacaille cataloged it in his list of southern nebulous objects. Next to observe and catalog it were James Dunlop in 1826, and John Herschel in 1834. The stars of 47 Tucanae are spread over a volume almost 120 light years across. At their distance of 13,400 light years, they still cover an area of the sky of about the same apparent diameter as the full moon, about 30 minutes of arc. Globular cluster 47 Tucanae is approaching us at roughly 19 km/s. NGC104 has a tight core, making it difficult to resolve. The Small Magellanic Cloud (NGC292) can be seen just entering the field in the top right corner. A small globular cluster NGC121 is seen just “” below”” NGC104. This globular cluster actually belongs to the Small Magellanic Cloud, while NGC104 belongs to the Milky Way Galaxy. They just happen to line up conveniently

Constellations of the Indian, the Crane and Toucan - Constellations of Indus, Grus and Tucana - The southern constellation of the Indian, with to its left the constellations of the Crane (top) and Toucan. Indus (the Indian, widely taken to mean the American Indian) is a constellation devoid of bright stars in a mostly undistinguished part of the southern sky. It was created by Johann Bayer and appeared in his atlas of 1603. The reference to the American Indian comes from the constellation engraving by Bayer, which shows a figure carrying arrows; however, even if it was conspicuous, most of the constellation is invisible from the USA

Upstairs, the cluster of stars NGC 362. The small globular cluster at the top of the picture is NGC 362. It is about 30,000 light years distant
