Pleiades open cluster - The Pleiades star cluster - The Pleiades star cluster contains about 500 stars formed 100 million years ago. It is located 440 light years from Earth, in the constellation Taurus. M45, the Pleiades, is a beautiful open cluster in Taurus surrounded by reflection nebulosity. The cluster has been known since ancient times and contains six bright stars that can easily be seen with the unaided eye, and 500 stars total, most too faint to be seen. The blue nebulosity is visible by starlight reflected off of dust in space. The cluster is located about 440 light years from the Earth and is estimated to be about 100 million years old
Globular cluster M5 in Serpens - Globular cluster M5 in Serpens - This cluster of stars is located about 25,000 light years away from Earth. It is one of the most extensive (165 years - light) and one of the oldest known globular clusters. Globular clusters are generally peoples of very old stars, but here the Hubble space telescope has identified some young stars, blue stragglers. The globular cluster Messier 5, shown here in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image, is one of the oldest belonging to the Milky Way. The majority of its stars formed more than 12 billion years ago, but there are some unexpected newcomers on the scene, adding some vitality to this aging population. Stars in globular clusters form in the same stellar nursery and grow old together. The most massive stars age quickly, exhausting their fuel supply in less than a million years, and end their lives in spectacular supernovae explosions. This process should have left the ancient cluster Messier 5 with only old, low - mass stars, which, as they have aged and cooled, have become red giants, while the oldest stars have evolved even further into blue horizontal branch stars. Yet astronomers have spotted many young, blue stars in this cluster, hiding among the much more luminous ancient stars. Astronomers think that these laggard youngsters, called blue stragglers, were created either by stellar collisions or by the transfer of mass between binary stars. Such events are easy to imagine in densely populated globular clusters, in which up to a few million stars are tightly packed together. It is significantly younger than our 5 - billion - year - old sun. The brightest members of the cluster, also the highest - mass stars, are known in Greek mythology as two parents, Atlas and Pleione, and their seven daughters, Alcyone, Electra, Maia, Merope, Taygeta, Celaeno and Asterope. There are thousands of additional lower - mass members, including many stars like our sun. The cloud itself is opaque and because of that, very cold inside. These conditions are ideal for the formation of organic molecules on the surfaces of the chilled dust particles. The opacity of the cloud protects the fragile molecules within from the energetic radiation of nearby stars, but as its surface is gradually warmed and eroded, the delicate organic molecules are destroyed and the hydrogen released glows as a distinctive red emission nebula

Eagle Nebula (IC 4703) and star cluster M16 in the Snake - This wide - field image of the Eagle Nebula was taken at the National Science Foundation's 0.9 - meter telescope on Kitt Peak with the NOAO Mosaic CCD camera. Located in the constellation of Serpens, the Serpent, the Eagle Nebula is a very luminous open cluster of stars surrounded by dust and gas. The three pillars at the center of the image, made famous in an image by the Hubble Space Telescope, are being sculpted by the intense radiation from the hot stars in the cluster. This image was created by combining emission - line images in Hydrogen - alpha (green), Oxygen [O III] (blue) and Sulfur [S II] (red)

Galaxies cluster 1E 0657 - 556 - Dark matter in the galaxy cluster 1E 0657 - 556 - Composite view of the galaxy cluster 1E 0657 - 556 visible and X-rays. The hot gas that surrounds this galaxy cluster, detects in X-rays by the Chandra satellite, is visible in pink on this image. The galaxy cluster, photographed by the Magellan telescope and the Hubble space telescope, appears in the background. By studying the mass of this cluster, astronomers were able to determine that most of this mass was concentrated not in the hot gas detected by Chandra but in the blue coloured areas here, suggesting the existence of dark matter. This composite image shows the galaxy cluster 1E 0657 - 556, also known as the “” bullet cluster.”” This cluster was formed after the collision of two large clusters of galaxies, the most energetic event known in the universe since the Big Bang. Hot gas detected by Chandra telescope in X - rays is seen as two pink clumps in the image and contains most of the “” normal,””” or baryonic, matter in the two clusters. The bullet - shaped clump on the right is the hot gas from one cluster, which passed through the hot gas from the other larger cluster during the collision. An optical image from Magellan and the Hubble Space Telescope shows the galaxies in orange and white. The blue areas in this image depict where astronomers find most of the mass in the clusters. The concentration of mass is determined by analyzing the effect of so - called gravitational lensing, where light from the distant objects is distorted by intervening matter. Most of the matter in the clusters (blue) is clearly separate from the normal matter (pink), giving direct evidence that nearly all of the matter in the clusters is dark

Nebulae IC 1283 - 84 and NGC 6589 - 90 in Sagittarius - Nebulosity in Sagittarius, NGC 6589 - 90 - These nebulae are located in Sagittarius at a distance of about 5900 light years from Earth. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Our view towards the centre of the Galaxy is obscured by extensive clouds of interstellar dust in the direction of the constellation of Sagittarius. The large - scale, patchy nature of the obscuration can be seen with the unaided eye and it is evident on smaller scales from the uneven distribution of background stars across this picture. Light from bright stars within the dust produces the two blue reflection nebulae (NGC 6589 and 6590), and these stars are members of a loose open cluster of stars, NGC 6595 (Sharpless 37) which is at a distance of about 5,900 light years. A large, almost transparent cloud of hydrogen, mixed with traces of dust, glows with a characteristic magenta hue over most of the field of view. This is known as IC 1283, 1284 and 4700 and is likely at a similar distance to NCC 6595
Spiral Galaxy M100 in Berenice's Hair - Spiral galaxy M100 in Coma Berenices - The spiral galaxy M100 is located about 60 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the Virgin's galaxy cluster. Several dwarf elliptic galaxies are visible in this image, one just above M100 probably interacting. This image was obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. In this deep image fainter galaxies appear. One seems to be involved with the faint outskirts of the large spiral. The somewhat distorted shape of the dwarf galaxy suggests it could be both influencing and being influenced by M100, and may be the cause of the asymmetry in the spiral arms. Nearby is an even fainter, elongated dwarf galaxy and elsewhere in the picture are several others, all probably members of the Virgo cluster, which spills over into the adjoining constellation of Coma Berenices

M87 is the brightest radio source in the constellation, it is also called Virgo A. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Messier 87 (NGC 4486) lies near the centre of the nearby cluster of galaxies in Virgo at a distance of about 60 million light years. Although the physical boundaries of elliptical galaxies are not well defined, their mass can be, and by any standards M87 is enormous. It contains several thousand billion stars. Associated with this giant galaxy are large numbers of globular clusters, visible in this photograph as the cloud of slightly fuzzy objects around it. Like all ellipticals, M 87 is composed mainly of old stars and is largely devoid of the materials needed to make new ones. The galaxy is not inert however; high energy X - rays have been detected from an extensive outer halo and the galaxy itself is also known as Virgo A, the strongest radio source in the Virgo cluster. The source for this extreme behavior is probably a massive black hole at the center of the galaxy

The galaxy also called Virgo A contains a notable active galactic nucleus that is a strong source of multiwavelength radiation, particularly radio waves. In 1918 astronomer Heber Curtis discovered a jet of matter coming from M87 which extends at least 5000 light - years from the nucleus of M87 and is made up of matter ejected from the galaxy, most likely by a supermassive black hole

Globular cluster NGC 7006 - Globular cluster NGC 7006 - The globular cluster NGC 7006 is located in the constellation Dauphin about 135,000 years old - light from Earth. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows a compact and remote globular star cluster that lies in one of the smallest constellations in the night sky, Delphinus (The Dolphin). Due to its modest size, great distance and relatively low brightness, NGC 7006 is often ignored by amateur astronomers. But even remote globular clusters such as this one appear bright and clear when imaged by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. NGC 7006 resides in the outskirts of the Milky Way. It is about 135,000 light - years away, five times the distance between the Sun and the centre of the galaxy, and it is part of the galactic halo. This roughly spherical region of the Milky Way is made up of dark matter, gas and sparsely distributed stellar clusters. Like other remote globular clusters, NGC 7006 provides important clues that help astronomers to understand how stars formed and assembled in the halo. The cluster now pictured by Hubble has a very eccentric orbit indicating that it may have formed independently, in a small galaxy outside our own that was then captured by the Milky Way. Although NGC 7006 is very distant for a Milky Way globular cluster, it is much closer than the many faint galaxies that can be seen in the background of this image. Each of these faint smudges is probably accompanied by many globular clusters similar to NGC 7006 that are too faint to be seen even by Hubble. This image was taken using the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys, in a combination of visible and near - infrared light. The field of view is a little over 3 by 3 arcminutes

Globular cluster NGC 6752 - Stars in globular cluster NGC 6752 - Image of the center of the globular cluster NGC 6752 located in the constellation Peacock. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observed blue straggler. NGC 6752 is a globular cluster, and at over 10 billion years old is one the most ancient collections of stars known. It has been blazing for well over twice as long as our Solar System has existed. NGC 6752 contains a high number of blue straggler”” stars, some of which are visible in this image. These stars display characteristics of stars younger than their neighbours, despite models suggesting that most of the stars within globular clusters should have formed at approximately the same time. Their origin is therefore something of a mystery. Studies of NGC 6752 may shed light on this situation. It appears that a very high number - - up to 38% - - of the stars within its core region are binary systems. Collisions between stars in this turbulent area could produce the blue stragglers that are so prevalent. Lying 13 000 light - years distant in Pavo constellation, NGC 6752 is far beyond our reach, yet the clarity of Hubble's images brings it tantalisingly close.
