GAIA satellite - Illustration - View of the European satellite GAIA against a milky lane background. The objective of the Gaia mission is to carry out the largest possible census of the stars of our Galaxy and to create a 3D map of a very precise 3D map. The satellite will determine the position, color and proper movement of a billion stars. Gaia was launched since Kourou on December 19, 2013. Artist's print of Gaia. Gaia is an ambitious mission to chart a three - dimensional map of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, in the process revealing the composition, formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Gaia will provide unprecedented positional and radial velocity measurements with the accuracies needed to produce a stereoscopic and kinematic census of about one billion stars in our Galaxy and throughout the Local Group. This amounts to about 1 per cent of the Galactic stellar population. Combined with astrophysical information for each star, provided by on - board multi - colour photometry, these data will have the precision necessary to quantify the early formation, and subsequent dynamical, chemical and star formation evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy. Additional scientific products include detection and orbital classification of tens of thousands of extra - solar planetary systems, a comprehensive survey of objects ranging from huge numbers of minor bodies in our Solar System, through galaxies in the nearby Universe, to some 500,000 remote quasars. It will also provide a number of stringent new tests of general relativity and cosmology. Gaia was launched from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana on December 19, 2013

Artist view of Cygnus X-1 - Cygnus X-1 is a binary star X and was the first black hole candidate. This system consists of the 226868 HD star, a supergeant star, orbiting around a black hole. A stellar black hole is born from the gravitational collapse of a massive star. The stellar black holes have a mass of some solar masses. A black hole is a region of space whose gravitation is so strong that it will prevent any form of material or radiation from escaping. Cygnus X-1 is an X-ray binary system and the first black hole candidates to be discovered

Black hole - Black hole - Artwork: The event horizon represents the limit of the spatial extension of the black hole, defining what can be considered as its size. The region delimited by the horizon of events thus differs from the central gravitational singularite, which would be of an infinite density - Event horizon is a boundary in spacetime beyond which events cannot affect an outside observer. It is defined as “” the point of no return”””, the point at which the gravitational pull becomes so great as to make escape impossible, even for light. Light emitted from inside the event horizon can never reach the outside observer

Globular cluster M5 in Serpens - Globular cluster M5 in Serpens - This cluster of stars is located about 25,000 light years away from Earth. It is one of the most extensive (165 years - light) and one of the oldest known globular clusters. Globular clusters are generally peoples of very old stars, but here the Hubble space telescope has identified some young stars, blue stragglers. The globular cluster Messier 5, shown here in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image, is one of the oldest belonging to the Milky Way. The majority of its stars formed more than 12 billion years ago, but there are some unexpected newcomers on the scene, adding some vitality to this aging population. Stars in globular clusters form in the same stellar nursery and grow old together. The most massive stars age quickly, exhausting their fuel supply in less than a million years, and end their lives in spectacular supernovae explosions. This process should have left the ancient cluster Messier 5 with only old, low - mass stars, which, as they have aged and cooled, have become red giants, while the oldest stars have evolved even further into blue horizontal branch stars. Yet astronomers have spotted many young, blue stars in this cluster, hiding among the much more luminous ancient stars. Astronomers think that these laggard youngsters, called blue stragglers, were created either by stellar collisions or by the transfer of mass between binary stars. Such events are easy to imagine in densely populated globular clusters, in which up to a few million stars are tightly packed together. Messier 5 lies at a distance of about 25 000 light - years in the constellation of Serpens (The Snake). This image was taken with Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys
Galactic Center Region - The Galactic Center - The Galactic Center Region of the center of our galaxy seen the Chandra, Spitzer and Hubble satellites. The galactic center (Sagittarius A*) is located in the white area in the middle to the right of the image. In yellow, near-infrared images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope; in red, infrared images obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope; in blue and purple, X-ray observations obtained by the Chandra Space Telescope. Nasa's Great Observatories - the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory - have collaborated to produce an unprecedented image of the central region of our Milky Way galaxy. In this spectacular image, observations using infrared light and X-ray light see through the obscuring dust and reveal the intense activity near the galactic core. Note that the center of the galaxy is located within the bright white region to the right of and just below the middle of the image. The entire image width covers about one-half a degree, about the same angular width as the full moon. Each telescope's contribution is presented in a different color: - Yellow represents the near-infrared observations of Hubble. These observations outline the energetic regions where stars are being born as well as reveal hundreds of thousands of stars. - Red represents the infrared observations of Spitzer. The radiation and winds from stars create glowing dust clouds that exhibit complex structures from compact, spherical globules to long, stringy filaments. - Blue and violet represent the X-ray observations of Chandra. X-rays are emitted by gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions and by outflows from the supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center. The bright blue blob on the left side is emission from a double star system containing either a neutron star or a black hole. When these views are brought together, this composite image provides one of the most detailed

Open cluster Westerlund 2 in Carene - Open cluster Westerlund 2 in Carina - The open cluster Westerlund 2 is located about 20,000 years - light in the southern constellation of Carene, within the nebula Gum 29. About 3000 stars form this cluster. It contains a significant number of massive stars including one of the most massive stars known to date: WR 20a. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. The sparkling centerpiece of this image taken by the Hubble space telescope is a giant cluster of about 3,000 stars called Westerlund 2, named for Swedish astronomer Bengt Westerlund, who discovered the grouping in the 1960s. The cluster resides in a raucous stellar breeding ground known as Gum 29, located 20,000 light - years away from Earth in the constellation Carina. To capture this image, Hubble's near - infrared Wide Field Camera 3 near - infrared pierced through the dusty veil shrouding the stellar nursery, giving astronomers a clear view of the nebula and the dense concentration of stars in the central cluster. The cluster measures between 6 to 13 light - years across. The giant star cluster is only about 2 million years old and contains some of our galaxy's hottest, brightest, and most massive stars. Some of its heftiest stars unleash torrents of ultraviolet light and hurricane - force winds of charged particles that etch at the enveloping hydrogen gas cloud. The nebula reveals a fantasy landscape of pillars, ridges, and valleys. The pillars, composed of dense gas and thought to be incubators for new stars are a few light - years tall and point to the central star cluster. Other dense regions surround the pillars, including reddish - brown filaments of gas and dust. The brilliant stars sculpt the gaseous terrain of the nebula and help create a successive generation of baby stars. When the stellar winds hit dense walls of gas, the shockwaves may spark a new torrent of star birth along the wall of the cavity. The red dots scattered t

Jet of the Galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) seen in X-rays - Galaxy Centaurus A X - ray jet - View in false colours of a 30 000-year long jet - light that escapes from the nucleus of the Galaxy Centaurus A where a massive black hole is suspected. The galaxy NGC 5128 is located about 13 million light years away from Earth. Image obtained by the Chandra Space Telescope in May 2000. Chandra space telescope detects a jet emanating from the NGC 5128 core and numerous point - like X - ray sources, all bathed in diffuse X - rays produced by several - million - degree gas that fills the galaxy. It is believed that most of these sources are X - ray binaries in which a neutron star or stellar - sized black hole is accreting matter from a nearby companion star. The Cen A image was created from Chandra observations taken on December 5, 1999 and May 17, 2000

Detail of the horse's head nebula by the VLT - Horsehead Nebula, which is situated in the Orion molecular cloud complex. Its official name is Barnard 33 and it is a dust protrusion in the southern region of the dense dust cloud Lynds 1630, on the edge of the HII region IC 434. The distance to the region is about 1400 light - years (430 pc). This beautiful colour image was produced from three images obtained with the multi - mode FORS2 instrument at the second VLT Unit Telescope (KUEYEN) on February 1, 2000. Three predominant colours are seen in the image: red from the hydrogen (H - alpha) emission from the HII region; brown for the foreground obscuring dust; and blue - green for scattered starlight. The blue - green regions of the Horsehead Nebula correspond to regions not shadowed from the light from the stars in the H II region to the top of the picture and scatter stellar radiation towards the observer; these are thus 'mountains' of dust

A stellar black hole is born from the gravitational collapse of a massive star. The stellar black holes have a mass of some solar masses. A black hole is a region of space where gravity is so strong that it stops any form of material or radiation from escaping. Combining observations done with Eso's Very Large Telescope and Nasa's Chandra X-ray telescope, astronomers have uncovered the most powerful pair of jets ever seen from a stellar black hole. The black hole blows a huge bubble of hot gas, 1000 light-years across or twice as large and tens of times more powerful than the other such microquasars. The stellar black hole belongs to a binary system as pictured in this artist's impression
Star T - Tauri in Orion - Bow Shock around T - Tauri Star in the Orion Nebula - LL Ori is a star T - Tauri located about 1500 years ago - light from Earth in Orion's nebula. This young star emits a powerful stellar wind that hits the surrounding gas creating an arc-shaped shock wave Image obtained by the Hubble space telescope in February 1995. A bow shock can be created in space when two streams of gas collide. The star LL Ori emits a vigorous solar wind, a stream of charged particles moving rapidly outward from the star. Our own Sun has a less energetic version of this wind that is responsible for auroral displays on the Earth. The material in the fast wind from LL Ori collides with slow - moving gas evaporating away from the center of the Orion Nebula, which is located to the lower right in this Heritage image. The surface where the two winds collide is the crescent - shaped bow shock seen in the image. Unlike a water wave made by a ship, this interstellar bow shock is a three - dimensional structure. The filamentary emission has a very distinct boundary on the side facing away from LL Ori, but is diffuse on the side closest to the star, a characteristic common to many bow shocks. A second, fainter bow shock can be seen around a star near the upper right - hand corner of the image. Astronomers have identified numerous shock fronts in this complex star - forming region and are using this data to understand the many complex phenomena associated with the birth of stars. This image was taken in February 1995 as part of the Hubble Orion Nebula mosaic. A close visitor in our Milky Way galaxy, the nebula is only 1,500 light - years from Earth. The filters used in this color composite represent oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen emissions
Planetary nebula M57 (NGC 6720) in Lyra - The Ring nebula (M57) in Lyra - The planetary nebula of Lyra (M57) is located about 2000 years - light from Earth. With a magnitude of 9.0, this nebula is easily observed with a small telescope. A planetary nebula is a gas shell from a small late-life star whose heart collapsed to become a white dwarf and expelled the outer layers of its matter. The Ring Nebula, M57, is the most famous example of a planetary nebula. Located about 2,000 light years away, it has an apparent diameter of 1 arc minute and a real diameter of about one light year. At magnitude 9.0 its high surface brightness makes it an easy object, even from the city and even with small telescopes. Despite their name, planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets. They were named originally because their discoverers observed them visually and they did not appear as stellar point sources, but rather as small diffuse objects that resembled the outer planets in our solar system such as Uranus and Neptune when seen in a telescope. Planetary nebula are shells of gas shed by stars late in their life cycles after using up all of their nuclear fuel. The star then ejects a significant portion of its mass in a gaseous shell, which is illuminated by its extremely hot central star, which is just the core left from the original star. The star at the center of the Ring nebula has a surface temperature of 216,000 degrees Farenheit or 120,000 degrees Celsius. Our own star, the Sun, is expected to undergo the same process in a couple of billion years. Planetary nebulae do not last long at all in cosmic terms, the shell of gas expands and diffuse, becoming invisible, and the star turns into a white dwarf
Planetary nebula NGC 6543 in the Dragon/HST - This NASA Hubble Space Telescope image shows one of the most complex planetary nebulae ever seen, NGC 6543, nicknamed the “Cat's Eye Nebula.””” Hubble reveals surprisingly intricate structures including concentric gas shells, jets of high - speed gas and unusual shock - induced knots of gas. Estimated to be 1,000 years old, the nebula is a visual “” fossil record”” of the dynamics and late evolution of a dying star. A preliminary interpretation suggests that the star might be a double - star system. The dynamical effects of two stars orbiting one another most easily explains the intricate structures, which are much more complicated than features seen in most planetary nebulae. (The two stars are too close together to be individually resolved by Hubble, and instead, appear as a single point of light at the center of the nebula.) According to this model, a fast “” stellar wind””” of gas blown off the central star created the elongated shell of dense, glowing gas. This structure is embedded inside two larger lobes of gas blown off the star at an earlier phase. These lobes are “” pinched”” by a ring of denser gas, presumably ejected along the orbital plane of the binary companion. The suspected companion star also might be responsible for a pair of high - speed jets of gas that lie at right angles to this equatorial ring. If the companion were pulling in material from a neighboring star, jets escaping along the company's rotation axis could be produced. These jets would explain several puzzling features along the periphery of the gas lobes. Like a stream of water hitting a sand pile, the jets compress gas ahead of them, creating the “” curlicue”” features and bright arcs near the outer edge of the lobes. The twin jets are now pointing in different directions than these features. This suggests the jets are wobbling, or precessing, and turning on and off episodically. Centaurus A elliptical galaxy (NGC 5128) in Centaurus - The radio galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128): The galaxy NGC 5128 is located about 13 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Centaurus. A broad dark band crosses it in the middle, a probable vestige of a collision with a spiral galaxy. This giant galaxy is a powerful radio source known as Centaurus A. It is an active galaxy whose energy comes from a supermassive black hole. - NGC 5128 is the nearest large elliptical galaxies to our sun at about 13 million light years. It is also the nearest of the giant radio galaxies, possessing an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and optically one of the most luminous galaxies in the sky. In 1949, NGC 5128 was found to be a loud source of radio energy, in fact the loudest radio source in its region of the sky (second overall to Cygnus A), earning it the designation Centarus A. As a radio galaxy it releases 1000 times the radio energy of the Milky Way in the form of large bi-directional radio lobes that extend some 800,000 light years into intergalactic space. The source of the radio emission is very compact, about 10 light days across and is believed to be a supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center with a total mass of 200 million to possibly one billion suns. As a radio galaxy, NGC 5128 belongs to the subgroup of galaxies called Active Galaxies, which include Quasars, Seyfert galaxies, Blazars and Radio Galaxies. Active galaxies are distinguished by their prodigious energy output which cannot be explained by their stellar populations and must have another source. Active galaxies have in common an “Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN)”” which is believed responsible for their prodigious energy output. Supermassive black holes are almost certainly the central engines of Active Galactic Nuclei, powering the enormous outflows of energy which characterize this subgroup of bright galaxies.
