Artist's view of the solar system - Solar system artwork - Artist's view of the solar system. Planets are represented in order of proximity to the sun. From left to right: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. A comet and a galaxy are also represented. Solar system artwork. The planets are shown from the nearest planet of the Sun, Mercury (left), to the farthest (right), Neptune. A comet and a galaxy are shown. Since August 2006, Pluto is no more a planet but a dwarf planet called 134340 Pluto
The solar system - Our solar system - Artwork - Illustration of the planets of the solar system. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Kuiper's belt is shown. Diagram of the sun and planets showing their relative scale. The bluish haze beyond the orbit of Neptune represents the inner Kuiper Belt where dwell Pluto and other minor planets. The relative distances of the planets are NOT to scale

Artist's view of the solar system - Artist's view of the solar system. Planets are represented in order of proximity to the sun. On the right, the terrestrial planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth (and Moon) Mars; on the left, the gas giant planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. A comet, the asteroid belt and Pluto's orbit are also represented. Our solar system features eight planets, seen in this artist's diagram. Although there is some debate within the science community as to whether Pluto should be classified as a Planet or a dwarf planet, the International Astronomical Union has decided on the term plutoid as a name for dwarf planets like Pluto. This representation is intentionally fanciful, as the planets are depicted far closer together than they really are. Similarly, the bodies' relative sizes are inaccurate. This is done for the purpose of being able to depict the solar system and still represent the bodies with some detail. (Otherwise the Sun would be a mere speck, and the planets -even the majestic Jupiter - would be far too small to be seen.

Uranus and its satellite Puck - Illustration - Uranus from Puck orbit - Illustration - The planet Uranus seen from the orbit of its small satellite Puck. This is how Uranus and its tiny satellite Puck might look from a position in orbit around Puck. Puck in turn orbits Uranus at a height of 37 thousand miles above Uranus' cloud tops, completing one orbit in about 18 hours. Due to the fact that Puck's orbit is on the same plane as Uranus' rings, they would appear as little more than a thin line from this vantage punin

Uranus and three satellites seen by Voyager 2 - Image obtained by the Voyager 2 probe in January 1986 showing the planet Uranus accompanied by the satellites Ariel (top right), Miranda (closest to the planet) and Umbriel (bottom left). This Voyager photograph of Uranus taken in january 1986 is a composite of for images taken by the narrow angle camera. At this range, clouds and other features in the atmosphere as small as 1,370 km. could be detected by Voyager 2. Yet, no such features are visible. This view is toward the illuminated south pole of Uranus. The predominant blue color is the result of atmospheric methane, which absorbs the red wavelengths from incoming sunlight. The spot at the upper left edge of the planet's disk reulted from the removal of a network mark used in making measurments on the photograph. Three of Uranus' five known satellites are visible; Miranda (at far right, closest to the planet), Ariel (next out, at top), and Umbriel (lower left). Titania and Oberon are now outside the narrow angle camera's field of view when it centered on the planet. This color composite was made from images taken through blue, green, orange, and clear filters
Uranus and its satellite Puck - Illustration - Uranus and Puck - Illustration - Planet Uranus with its Puck satellite in the foreground. On the right, closer to the planet, is the Belinda satellite. Even closer to Uranus, on the left, the Portia satellite. On Uranus, a giant storm is represented. This is how Uranus and its tiny satellite Puck might look from a position in space about a thousand miles above and beyond Puck itself. With a diameter of about 100 miles, Puck is the largest and outermost of the ten known “” inner”” satellites that orbit Uranus within a radius of 51 thousand miles. Further in toward Uranus on the right is Belinda, a satellite that is about 40 miles in diameter. Even closer to Uranus on the far left is the 60 - mile - diameter satellite Portia. On Uranus itself can be seen a giant, cyclonic storm that's almost as big as the Earth

Artist's view of the asteroid 2060 Chiron: (2060) Chiron, also designed as 95P/Chiron, is a centaur type cometary asteroid, an ice body of 166 kilometres of diameter orbiting around the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. 2060 Chiron, also known as 95P/Chiron, is a minor planet in the outer Solar System, orbiting the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. Discovered in 1977 it was the first-identified member of a new class of objects now known as centaurs - bodies orbiting between the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt. Besides the four giant planets, Chiron and 10199 Chariklo, also a centaur, are the only other bodies in the Solar System known to have rings. Although it was initially called an asteroid and classified only as a minor planet with the designation “” 2060 Chiron””, it was later found to exhibit behavior typical of a comet. Today it is classified as both a minor planet and a comet, and is accordingly also known by the cometary designation “” 95P/Chiron””

La planete Neuf - Illustration - Planet Nine - Artwork: Vue d'artiste de la planete Neuf. The Ninth Planet is a hypothetical planet of the Solar System indirectly recorded, the existence of which is suggested by observing the orbits of several transneptunian objects. This planet would be gaseous, similar to Uranus or Neptune. A hypothetical planet in the outer reaches of the solar system orbits more than 700 times farther from the sun than earth does. A Super-earth, with an estimated mass of 10 Earths (approximately 5,000 times the mass of Pluto), a diameter two to four times that of Earth, and a highly elliptical orbit with an orbital period of approximately 15,000 years, the planet is shown as a ringed ice giant whose night side is illuminated by lightning and aurorae powered by galactic cosmic rays.

Planetary nebula M57 (NGC 6720) in Lyra - The Ring nebula (M57) in Lyra - The planetary nebula of Lyra (M57) is located about 2000 years - light from Earth. With a magnitude of 9.0, this nebula is easily observed with a small telescope. A planetary nebula is a gas shell from a small late-life star whose heart collapsed to become a white dwarf and expelled the outer layers of its matter. The Ring Nebula, M57, is the most famous example of a planetary nebula. Located about 2,000 light years away, it has an apparent diameter of 1 arc minute and a real diameter of about one light year. At magnitude 9.0 its high surface brightness makes it an easy object, even from the city and even with small telescopes. Despite their name, planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets. They were named originally because their discoverers observed them visually and they did not appear as stellar point sources, but rather as small diffuse objects that resembled the outer planets in our solar system such as Uranus and Neptune when seen in a telescope. Planetary nebula are shells of gas shed by stars late in their life cycles after using up all of their nuclear fuel. The star then ejects a significant portion of its mass in a gaseous shell, which is illuminated by its extremely hot central star, which is just the core left from the original star. The star at the center of the Ring nebula has a surface temperature of 216,000 degrees Farenheit or 120,000 degrees Celsius. Our own star, the Sun, is expected to undergo the same process in a couple of billion years. Planetary nebulae do not last long at all in cosmic terms, the shell of gas expands and diffuse, becoming invisible, and the star turns into a white dwarf

Uranus photographed by Voyager 2 in January 1986.
Uranus - Illustration - The planet Uranus and its system of rings. This image suggests how Uranus might look from a position in space several hundred thousand miles above its south pole. Like Saturn and Jupiter, Uranus is a Gas Giant, composed primarily of hydrogen and helium gases surrounding a relatively small, dense core of molten rock and metal. Its bluish color is due to the presence of methane in its upper atmosphere. Also like Saturn and Jupiter, Uranus has rings. However Uranus' rings are over three orders of magnitude dimmer than Saturn's; where Saturn's rings are almost white, Uranus' rings are more like the color of charcoal. Uranus 'rings are so dim that they went undetected from 1781, when the English astronomer William Herschel first observed Uranus through a telescope, until 1977 when astronomers watched as a star passing behind Uranus appeared to blink several times, caused by the ten rings surrounding the planet. One bizarre aspect of Uranus is that its axis of rotation is tipped beyond 90 degrees in relation to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. This puts Uranus' north and south poles, relative to the Sun, where the other planets have their equators

Plaque de la rue Herschel in Paris - Street Plaque in Paris - Rue du 6th arrondissement de Paris, in tribute to William Herschel (1738 - 1822) English astronomer. He owes his celebrity to the discovery of the planet Uranus on 13 March 1781, of which he discovered two satellites. Specialist in double stars, he will be one of the first astronomers to understand that these star couples are physically linked. He will prepare the first major catalogue of nebulae, in which he lists more than 2000. Rue Herschel, street sign. English astronomer William Herschel dicovered the planet Uranus and published a catalog of nebulas

Uranus - true and false colors - Voyager 2 - Uranus in true and false colors - Images obtained by the Voyager 2 probe on January 19, 1986. On the left, the blue color is due to the presence of methane in the atmosphere of the planet; on the right, the same image seen in false colors. The axis of rotation of the planet is different from that of all other planets in the solar system. While for most planets this axis is almost vertical, for Uranus it is almost lying on the plane of its orbit. These two images of Uranus are shown here to reveal the pole rotation of the planet, as photographed by Voyager 2. The left is seen as the human eye would see, and the right isfalse color to reveal more intricate details

Star sky and Gegenschein - Gegenschein - View of Gegenschein in the constellation Pisces. Gegenschein is a very low glow created by the reflection of the sun's light on dust particles. The planet Uranus is also present in this image obtained on September 20, 2009. The Gegenschein, or counterglow, is visible here, just below the center of the image and to the lower left of the circlet of Pisces. It can be seen as a large diffuse oval area of very faint light just above the brightness of the sky background. The planet Uranus also happened to be located in the Gegenschein when the image was taken. Very faint extensions, called the Zodiacal Bridge, or Zodiacal Bands, connect the Gegenschein to the Zodiacal Light along the ecliptic. The Zodiacal light and Gegenschein are made of very small particles of dust that orbit the Sun in the plane of the Ecliptic. These particles are created by asteroid collisions and comets. The Gegenschein is at the anti-solar point, directly opposite the Sun in the sky, and is brighter because of backscatter
Uranus - true and false colors - Voyager 2 - Uranus in true and false colors - Images obtained by the Voyager 2 probe on January 17, 1986 at 9.1 million km from Uranus. On the left image in real colors, the blue color is due to the presence of methane in the atmosphere of the planet; on the right, the false colours show a thick layer of fog around the south pole. The axis of rotation of the planet is different from that of all other planets in the solar system. While for most planets this axis is almost vertical, for Uranus it is almost lying on the plane of its orbit. These two pictures of Uranus - - one in true color (left) and the other in false color - - were compiled from images returned Jan. 17, 1986, by the narrow - angle camera of Voyager 2. The spacecraft was 9.1 million kilometers (5.7 million miles) from the planet, several days from closest approach. The picture at left has been processed to show Uranus as human eyes would see it from the vantage point of the spacecraft. The picture is a composite of images taken through blue, green and orange filters. The darker shadings at the upper right of the disk correspond to the day - night boundary on the planet. Beyond this boundary lies the hidden northern hemisphere of Uranus, which currently remains in total darkness as the planet rotates. The blue - green color results from the absorption of red light by methane gas in Uranus' deep, cold and remarkably clear atmosphere. The picture at right uses false color and extreme contrast enhancement to bring out subtle details in the polar region of Uranus. Images obtained through ultraviolet, violet and orange filters were respectively converted to the same blue, green and red colors used to produce the picture at left
