Ships from Robert Cavelier, sieur de La Salle, at Matagorda Bay, on the Gulf of Mexico coast of present-day Texas. The ship unloads cargo for the establishment of a French Colony in 1684. This occurred on LaSalle's fourth ill-fated voyage which failed to discover the mouth of the Mississippi River, and his murder in a mutiny
American Revolution, Battle of Bunker Hill (aka Breed's Hill), June 17, 1775. The fortified American position is overrun by British forces. The first two British assaults failed, but the third prevailed because the American ran out of ammunition. In center right foreground, Massachusetts Militia Gen. After the American Revolution, Thaddeus Kosciuszko returned to Europe, He became General in Chief of the PolishLithuanian army fighting against Russian occupation following the Second Partition of Poland in 1793. After the 'Kosciuszko Uprising' failed in Nov. 1794, Kosciuszko was imprisoned by the Russians at Saint Petersburg's Peter and Paul Fortress. In 1796, he was pardoned by Tsar Paul I, and emigrated to the United States (engraving)

American soldiers advance on the left to repulse Natives American attack on their camp during the battle of Tippecanoe, Indiana, Sept. 26, 1811. The massed bayonet charge routed the Indians who began the battle with the advantage of a surprise attack on the American camp before dawn. Each side suffering around 150-175 causalities. It was a strategic victory for the US army, because the Shawnee Prophet leader was entirely discredited when his promise of immunity from bullets failed. Prophetstown was abandoned and its community disbanded. The Prophet, Tenskwatawa, in a white tunic, exhorts the retreating Indian warriors
War of 1812. Battle of Fort Stephenson, in Sandusky County, Ohio, Aug. 2, 1813. British General Henry Proctor and his Indian allies led by Tecumseh, attacked Fort Stephenson after failing to capture Ft. Meigs. Procter lost 96 of his 1,400 force in repeated assaults on the fort's 160 defenders, armed only with rifles and one cannon. When the attack failed, the British and Indians retreated to Canada. Like Fort Meigs, Fort Stephenson, was built to support a planned campaign to recapture Detroit (engraving)
War of 1812, Battle of Queenston Heights, Oct. 12, 1812. Battle scene in which British General Issac Brock was killed in combat (right foreground). 1,300 British soldiers, of the York and Lincoln militia and Mohawk warriors repulsed the attack by 3,550 US army and the New York militia. The Americans failed to take territory on the Canadian side of the Niagara River and American suffered 1,100 casualties (killed, wounded, captured) to the British's 128 (lithograph)
