Nebula of the Eagle (IC 4703) in the Snake - detail - Star - birth in the Eagle nebula. - The Pillars of Creation “” is undoubtedly the most famous image realized by the Hubble space telescope, obtained in 1995. 20 years later, the same telescope rephotographed this region with more finesse. These cold gas columns are home to star embryos. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has revisited one of its most iconic and popular images: the Eagle Nebula's Pillars of Creation. This image shows the pillars as seen in visible light, capturing the multi - coloured glow of gas clouds, wispy tendrils of dark cosmic dust, and the rust - colored elephants trunks of the nebula's famous pillars. The dust and gas in the pillars is seared by the intense radiation from young stars and eroded by strong winds from massive nearby stars. With these new images comes better contrast and a clearer view for astronomers to study how the structure of the pillars is changing over time.
Southern Crown Nebula - The CRA reflection nebula - R Coronae Australis is a region of star formations visible in the southern hemisphere. It is located about 500 light years away from Earth. On the right, the globular cluster NGC 6723, located 30 000 light years from Earth in Sagittarius. Image made with the 1.2m Telescope of Schmidt UK from Siding Spring. Corona Australis (the southern crown, CRA) is in the far southern sky but visible from the southern states of the USA. The constellation is small but distinctive. The conspicuous globular cluster NGC 6723 is at the western (right) edge of the photograph, but it is in Sagittarius, and is about 30,000 light years distant. Almost all the nebulosity here is starlight, reflected from minute grains of dust, some of which gather into darker condensations ('molecular clouds'), blotting out the background stars. Fainter features can be seen here. Shiny NGC 6726 - 27 near middle of image contains both a visual binary and a variable star. Other wispy nebulae in the western part of the dark cloud betray the presence of young, hidden stars

Nebula of the cone NGC 2264 and S star Monocerotis - NGC 2264 and S Monocerotis - Region H II located about 2600 years - light from Earth. The bright star is S Monocerotis, a star of magnitude 4.7. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. The region around the 4.7 magnitude star S Mon is a fascinating mixture of red fluorescent hydrogen and dark, obscuring dust lanes. Some dust patches are close enough to bright stars to reflect light from them; these appear blue for the same reason that the day - time sky is blue - because some of the interstellar particles preferentially scatter blue light. Some of the wispy tendrils of nebulosity are Herbig - Haro objects, jets of matter ejected from newly - formed stars still hidden within the nebula. About 250 stars have been recognised as members of NGC 2264 which is at a distance of about 2700 light years

Earth's atmosphere and noctiluque clouds - Earth's atmosphere and noctilucent clouds - View of the Earth's atmosphere with night clouds photographs from the International Space Station on July 22, 2008. These clouds look like cirrus but are much higher, between 75 and 90 km from the Earth's surface. Polar Mesospheric Clouds (also known as noctilucent clouds) are transient, upper atmospheric phenomena observed usually in the summer months at high latitudes (greater than 50 degrees) of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. They are bright and cloudlike in appearance while in deep twilight. They are illuminated by sunlight when the lower layers of the atmosphere are in the darkness of the Earth's shadow. This image was acquired at an altitude of just over 200 miles in the pre - dawn hours of July 22, 2008 as the International Space Station was passing over western Mongolia in central Asia. The dark horizon of the Earth appears below with some layers of the lower atmosphere already illuminated. The higher, bluish - colored clouds look much like wispy cirrus clouds which can be found in the troposphere as high as 60,000 feet. However noctilucent clouds, as seen here, are observed in the mesosphere at altitudes of 250,000 to 280,000 feet. Astronaut observations of Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMC) over northern Asia in June and July are not uncommon
Neptune - Voyager 2 - Image of Neptune obtained by the Voyager 2 probe on August 14, 1989 at 14.8 million km from the planet. Neptune has an equatorial diameter of about 49,000 kilometres. Its blue color is due to the abundance of methane in its atmosphere. On this photo, on the right, the Great Dark Spot, which is the size of the Earth where winds are blowing at 300 m/s. This spot has now disappeared but other dark spots have been detected since then. This contrast enhanced color photograph of Neptune was produced from images taken through the orange, green, and violet filters of the narrow angle camera. As Voyager 2 approaches Neptune, rapidly increasing image resolution is revealing striking new details in the planet's atmosphere, and this picture shows features as small as a few hundred kilometers in extent. Bright, wispy “” cirrus - type”” clouds are seen overlying the Great Dark Spot (GDS) at its southern (lower) margin and over its northwest (upper left) boundary. This is the first evidence that the GDS lies lower in the atmosphere than these bright clouds, which have remained in its vicinity for several months. Increasing detail in global banding, and the south polar can also be seen. A smaller dark spot at high southern latitudes is dimly visible near the limb at lower left

Swan Lace - detail - This delicate Hubble Space Telescope image shows a tiny portion of the Cygnus loop, a supernova remnant in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan. Measurements on this super - detailed image of a cosmic veil shows that the original supernova explosion took place only 5000 years ago. The Cygnus loop, also known as the Veil Nebula, is well - known to amateur astronomers as a challenging target for larger telescopes. It has a diameter of about 3 degrees (corresponding to 6 full moons). This spectacular nebula was created when a massive star ended its days in an immense supernova explosion. A bubble of dust and gas was expelled into space and has continued to expand outwards ever since. The Cygnus Loop consists of two main arcs, designated NGC 6992/95 for the Eastern arc and NGC 6960 for the Western arc (also called the Witch's Broom Nebula). The tiny area of the Hubble image is seen in the upper left - hand corner of the nebula, at the outer edge of one of the large filaments, just where the blast wave rams into the surrounding interstellar gas. We are seeing the shock front almost exactly edge - on, thus explaining its wispy, sheet - like appearance. The image is a striking example of how processes that take place hundreds of light years away can sometimes resemble effects we see around us in our daily life. It was obtained with the WFPC2 instrument in November 1997 with an exposure time of 7400 seconds. The image shows light emitted by neutral hydrogen (656.3 nm) and measures 150 x 70 arc - seconds
Southern Crown Nebula - The tail of the CRA reflection nebula - R Coronae Australis is a region of star formations visible in the southern hemisphere. Our picture is about 4.5 degrees across and the extremely faint Corona Australis nebula meanders along the Sgr - CRA border nebula in the same E - W direction. Almost all the nebulosity here is starlight, reflected from minute grains of dust, some of which gather into darker condensations ('molecular clouds'), blotting out the background stars. By far the largest and densest of the molecular clouds is at the western end of the picture, seen in more detail here. It is about a degree long, corresponding to eight light years at the 500ly distance of the nebula and is extremely opaque - - background stars are dimmed by an astonishing 35 magnitudes. However, not all is darkness, and the dusty cloud appears to be tipped by a pair of bright stars, embedded in bright reflection nebulae. The brightest of these is NGC 6726 - 27 and it contains both a visual binary and a variable star. Other wispy nebulae in the western part of the dark cloud betray the presence of young, hidden stars
Star Formation in Cassiopee - Star Formation in Cassiopeia - This star-forming region, called W5, is located approximately 6500 light years ago in the constellation Cassiopee. Several generations of stars appear on this cliche; the older ones are the blue stars in the centre of the two cavities; the younger stars are grouped at the edges of these cavities and at the ends of the gas pillars or they appear like pink dots; the white areas are home to the very young stars in formation. In this infrared image, heated dust appears in red, dense gas clouds appear in green. Composite image obtained by the Spitzer space telescope in 2006 and 2007. Generations of stars can be seen in this infrared portrait from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope. In this wispy star - forming region, called W5, the oldest stars can be seen as blue dots in the centers of the two hollow cavities (other blue dots are background and foreground stars not associated with the region). Younger stars line the rims of the cavities, and some can be seen as pink dots at the tips of the elephant - trunk - like pillars. The white knotty areas are where the youngest stars are forming. Red shows heated dust that pervades the region's cavities, while green highlights dense clouds. W5 spans an area of sky equivalent to four full moons and is about 6,500 light - years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. The Spitzer picture was taken over a period of 24 hours. Like other massive star - forming regions, such as Orion and Carina, W5 contains large cavities that were carved out by radiation and winds from the region's most massive stars. According to the theory of triggered star - formation, the carving out of these cavities pushes gas together, causing it to ignite into successive generations of new stars. This image contains some of the best evidence yet for the triggered star - formation theory. Scientists analyzing the photo have been able to sho
Remnants of Supernova of Vails - detail - Pencil Nebula (NGC 2376) - Remnants from a star that exploded thousands of years ago created a celestial abstract portrait, as captured in this image of the Pencil Nebula. Officially known as NGC 2736, the Pencil Nebula is part of the huge Vela supernova remnant, located in the southern constellation Vela. Discovered by Sir John Herschel in the 1840s, the nebula's linear appearance triggered its popular name. The nebula's shape suggests that it is part of the supernova shock wave that recently encountered a region of dense gas. It is this interaction that causes the nebula to glow, appearing like a rippled sheet. In this snapshot, astronomers are looking along the edge of the undulating sheet of gas. This view shows large, wispy filamentary structures, smaller bright knots of gas, and patches of diffuse gas. The Hubble Heritage Team used the Advanced Camera for Surveys in October 2002 to observe the nebula. The region of the Pencil Nebula captured in this image is about three fourths of a light - year across. The Vela supernova remnant is 114 light - years (35 parsecs) across. The remnant is about 815 light - years (250 parsecs) away from our solar system. The nebula's luminous appearance comes from dense gas regions that have been struck by the supernova shock wave. As the shock wave travels through space [from right to left in the image], it rams into interstellar material. Initially the gas is heated to millions of degrees, but then subsequently cools down, emitting the optical light visible in the image. The colors of the various regions in the nebula yield clues about this cooling process. Some regions are still so hot that the emission is dominated by ionized oxygen atoms, which glow blue in the picture. Other regions have cooled more and are seen emitting red in the image (cooler hydrogen atoms). In this situation, color shows the temperature of the gas. The nebula is visible in this image because it is glowing
Planetary nebula NGC 3242 ultraviolet view - Planetary nebula NGC 3242 seen in ultraviolet - The planetary nebula NGC 3242, also called the ghost of Jupiter, ultraviolet view by the GALEX satellite. NGC 3242 is located between 1400 and 2500 years - light of the Earth, in the constellation Hydra (hydra, or female hydra). This ultraviolet image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) shows NGC 3242, a planetary nebula frequently referred to as “” Jupiter's Ghost.””” When stars with a mass similar to our sun approach the end of their lives by exhausting supplies of hydrogen and helium fuel in their cores, they swell up into cool red - giant stars. In a last gasp before death, they expel the layers of gas in their outer atmosphere. This exposes the core of the dying star, a dense hot ball of carbon and oxygen called a white dwarf. The white dwarf is so hot that it shines very brightly in the ultraviolet. The ultraviolet light from the white dwarf, in turn, ionizes the gaseous material expelled by the star causing it to glow. A planetary nebula is really the death of a low - mass star. Although low - mass stars like our sun live for billions of years, planetary nebulae only last for about ten thousand years. As the central white dwarf quickly cools and the ultraviolet light dwindles, the surrounding gas also cools and fades. In this image of NGC 3242 from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, the extended region around the planetary nebula is shown in dramatic detail. The small circular white and blue area at the center of the image is the well - known portion of the famous planetary nebula. The precise origin and composition of the extended wispy white features is not known for certain. It is most likely material ejected during the star's red - giant phase before the white dwarf was exposed. However, it may be possible that the extended material is simply interstellar gas that, by coincidence, is located close enough to the white dwarf to be energized by i

Irregular dwarf galaxy I Zwicky 18 - Irregular dwarf galaxy I Zwicky 18 - The irregular dwarf galaxy I Zwicky 18 is located 59 million years - light in the Great Bear and extends over about 3000 years - light. The two bright white spots are star-forming regions. At the top left, another galaxy is visible. This galaxy could be interacting with I Zwicky 18. This image is the result of observations made by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2005 and 2006. Called I Zwicky 18, this galaxy has a youthful appearance that resembles galaxies typically found only in the early universe. Hubble has now found faint, older stars within this galaxy, suggesting that the galaxy may have formed at the same time as most other galaxies. I Zwicky 18 is classified as a dwarf irregular galaxy and is much smaller than our Milky Way Galaxy. The concentrated bluish - white knots embedded in the heart of the galaxy are two major starburst regions where stars are forming at a furious rate. The wispy blue filaments surrounding the central starburst regions are bubbles of gas that have been blown away by stellar winds and supernovae explosions from a previous generation of hot, young stars. This gas is now heated by intense ultraviolet radiation unleashed by hot, young stars. A companion galaxy lies just above and to the left of I Zwicky 18. The companion may be interacting with I Zwicky 18 by gravitationally tugging on the galaxy. The interaction may have triggered the galaxy's recent star formation that is responsible for the youthful appearance. Besides the bluish - white young stars, white - reddish stars also are visible in both I Zwicky 18 and its companion. These stars may be as old as 10 billion years. The reddish extended objects surrounding I Zwicky 18 and its companion are ancient, fully formed galaxies of different shapes that are much farther away. Hubble data also allowed astronomers for the first time to identify Cephe
