Digital Computers, 1950s Ferranti Pegasus computer circuit boards, 1956. The Ferranti Pegasus is an example of an early computer that predates the use of transistors or modern integrated circuits. It was designed by Christopher Strachey (1916-1975) while working at the National Research and Development Corporation (NRDC). He based his design on his experiments while working with Elliot Bros, where he pioneered the idea of constructing computers from modular packages. The Pegasus computer is made up of cabinets of electronics, divided into sections known as bays, and a control desk which includes the paper-tape input/output equipment. This Pegasus is a four-bay computer with refrigeration ducts.
