Up until now, Lutetia, with a diameter of 81 miles (130 kilometers), was the largest asteroid visited by a spacecraft, which occurred during a flyby. Vesta, which is also considered a protoplanet because it's a large body that almost became a planet, dwarfs all other small bodies in this image, with its diameter sizing up at approximately 330 miles (530 kilometers)

In the middle of the crater is a central peak, formed when the energy of the impact liquefied the crust long enough for it to rebound upward and solidify once again. One of the Expedition 38 crew members aboard the Earth - orbiting International Space Station recorded this image which features the Manicouagan Crater and reservoir located primarily in Manicouagan Regional County Municipality in the Cote - Nord region of Quebec, Canada. Scientists believe the crater was caused by the impact of a 5 kilometer (3 mile) diameter asteroid about 215.5 million years ago (Triassic Period). The crater is a multiple - ring structure about 100 kilometers (60 miles) across, with its 70 kilometer (40 mile) diameter inner ring as its most prominent feature; it contains a 70 kilometer (40 mile) diameter annular lake, the Manicouagan Reservoir, surrounding an inner island plateau, Rene - Levasseur Island. Europe - Jupiter Satellite - View of the surface of the Europe satellite obtained from images made by the Galileo probe in 1995 and 1998. Jupiter's icy moon Europa looms large in this newly - reprocessed color view, made from images taken by Nasa's Galileo spacecraft in the late 1990s. This is the color view of Europa from Galileo that shows the largest portion of the moon's surface at the highest resolution. To create this new version, the images were assembled into a realistic color view of the surface that approximates how Europa would appear to the human eye. The scene shows the stunning diversity of Europa's surface geology. Long, linear cracks and ridges crisscross the surface, interrupted by regions of disrupted terrain where the surface ice crust has been broken up and re - frozen into new patterns. Color variations across the surface are associated with differences in geologic feature type and location. For example, areas that appear blue or white contain relatively pure water ice, while reddish and brownish areas include non - ice components in higher concentrations. The polar regions, visible at the left and right of this view, are noticeably bluer than the more equatorial latitudes, which look more white. This color variation is thought to be due to differences in ice grain size in the two locations. Images taken through near - infrared, green and violet filters have been combined to produce this view. The images have been corrected for light scattered outside of the image, to provide a color correction that is calibrated by wavelength. Gaps in the images have been filled with simulated color based on the color of nearby surface areas with similar terrain types. This global color view consists of images acquired by the Galileo Solid - State Imaging (SSI) experiment on the spacecraft's first and fourteenth orbits through the Jupiter system, in 1995 and 1998, respectively. Whether gullies form under today's cold dry conditions on Mars is a major question that planetary scientists are trying to answer. Wolfe Creek Crater lies on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert approximately 90 km south of Halls Creek in Western Australia. Because of its excellent preservation, the crater clearly shows the classic features that result from a large meteorite striking the Earth. The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on Nasa's Terra satellite captured this image of Wolfe Creek Crater on September 22, 2006. The Australian Outback appears mostly in varying earth tones in this simulated - true - color image. Deep green indicates vegetation lining the winding stream west of the crater. A road leads to the crater's rim, approaching from the south, then turning east. The crater itself appears fairly dark brown, but a bright white splotch occupies the crater's center. Its main feature is the color difference between the two hemispheres. On the left, the dark region called Cassini Regio with to the east the largest crater of Japet, named Turgis (580 km in diameter). Pingualuit crater seen by satellite - Pingualuit crater seen by satellite - The Pingualuit crater, formerly known as the New Quebec crater, is located at the northern end of Quebec, Nunavik. It's a crater caused by the impact of a meteorite that fell about 1.4 million years ago. Visible to the left of the image, this almost perfectly circular impact crater measures about 3.4 km in diameter and houses a lake 260 metres deep. Cratere Erlanger sur la Lune - Erlanger crater near Moon north pole - Erlanger cratere is located 90 km from the north pole of the Moon. The bottom of this 10 km-diameter crater rarely receives the sun's rays. In this image obtained on August 8, 2009 by the LRO probe (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter), only the edges of the crater are illuminated by the Sun. Bed view of Erlanger, crater 10 km (6 miles) across just 90 km (50 miles) from the Moon's north pole. The Sun is perpetually on the horizon as seen from the crater, and only the raised rim is ever lit. In this shot almost the entire circle of the rim can be seen, poking into the sunlight. Dione, satellite of Saturn, seen by Cassini - Dione, moon of Saturn, as seen by Cassini - Mosaic of images obtained by the Cassini probe on 11 October 2005 at a distance of about 25,000 km from the satellite. As it departed its encounter with Saturn's moon Dione, Cassini sailed above an unreal landscape blasted by impacts. The rising Sun throws craters into sharp contrast and reveals steep crater walls. At the far right, a medium - sized crater is bisected by a fracture, revealing a cross section of the impact site. The seven clear - filter images in this mosaic were taken with the Cassini spacecraft narrow - angle camera on Oct. 11, 2005, at distances ranging from 21.650 to 25.580 kilometers (13,450 to 15,890 miles) from Dione and at a Sun - Dione - spacecraft, or phase, angle of 154 degrees. Resolution in the original images ranges from 126 to 154 meters (413 to 505 feet) per pixel. The images have been re - sized to have an image scale of about 100 meters (330 feet) per pixel. Mercury seen by the Messenger probe - Mercury seen by Messenger spacecraft - Image of Mercury, obtained by the Messenger probe on October 6, 2008. The bright crater in the middle of the picture down is the Kuiper crater. The large striations north and east of the crater are observed for the first time by a space probe. Recolorised image. The spectacular image shows the departing planet taken about 90 minutes after the spacecraft's closest approach to Mercury on October 6, 2008. The bright crater just south of the center of the image is Kuiper, identified on images from the Mariner 10 mission in the 1970s. For most of the terrain east of Kuiper, toward the limb (edge) of the planet, the departing images are the first spacecraft views of that portion of Mercury's surface. A striking characteristic of this newly imaged area is the large pattern of rays that extend from the northern region of Mercury to regions south of Kuiper. This extensive ray system appears to emanate from a relatively young crater newly imaged by MESSENGER, providing a view of the planet distinctly unique from that obtained during Messenger's first flyby. This young, extensively rayed crater, along with the prominent rayed crater to the southeast of Kuiper, near the limb of the planet, were both seen in Earth - based radar images of Mercury but not previously imaged by spacecraft. Impact on the Moon seen from primitive Earth - Asteroid Impact on the Moon seen from primitive Earth: An asteroid hits the Moon forming one of the largest impact crateres of the solar system, the Aitken Basin, at the southern pole of the Moon (2500 km in diameter, 13 km in depth). The date of this impact is uncertain, probably just over three billion years ago. On Earth, the first algae grow - An asteroid impact, perhaps the largest endured by the moon since the little splat, created the South Pole Aitkens Basin, one of the largest impact structures in the solar system. The date of the impact is uncertain: it might have occurred only a little over 3 billion years ago. If so, from the earth - where primitive algae would have been the only witness - the impact would have been an impressive sight
