Horsehead Nebula (B33) in Orion - Horsehead Nebula (B33) in Orion - The horse's head nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark nebula located in front of the IC 434 nebula about 1500 years - light from Earth in the constellation Orion. At the bottom left, the nebula NGC 2024 with just above the star Alnitak, a supergeant star belonging to the Orion Baudrier. Towards the center of the image, a reflexion nebula, NGC 2023. The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33 in nebula IC 434) is a dark nebula in the Orion constellation at approximately 1,500 light years from Earth. On bottom left of the image is the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) with star Alnitak which belongs to the Belt of Orion; in the center, the reflection nebula NGC 2023. Constellation of the Southern Cross - The Southern Cross - The Southern Cross and the Alpha and Beta stars of Centaurus. Crux, the Southern Cross, is the smallest constellation in the sky yet one of the most distinctive, at least to those of us who live in the southern hemisphere. It was once part of Centaurus, where the bright stars Acrux and Mimosa could easly be imagined as the rear hooves of the rearing mythical centaur. However, when Christian sailors began to explore southwards in the 16th century, this memorable asterism took on a new significance. The cross appears on the national flags of several southern hemisphere countries, including Australia, though it can be seen on the southern horizon from the tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north of the equator. Along with the Southern Cross is a very distinctive dark shape known as the Coalsack, much used by southern hemisphere astronomers as an indicator of a dark sky, especially if the sixth magnitude star embedded in it is visible. The long axis of the southern cross points towards the south celestial pole, so the cross itself acts as a very convenient circumpolar clock, compasset and calendar
Constellations of the Fly and the Southern Cross - Constellations of Musca and the Southern cross - The Southern Cross and the Alpha and Beta Stars of Centaur. Below, the constellation of the Fly. In contrast to adjacent Crux, Musca (The Fly) is a much less obvious, less distinguished and less useful constellation that first appeared in Johann Bayer's 1603 Uranometria. It is one of a dozen created by the Dutch explorers/navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman on their voyages into the south seas in the late 16th century

Right, star cluster M4 - Mars passing the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex on Aug 25, 2016 - This star-forming region is located at about 520 light years in Scorpius constellation. The area is highlighted by the bright star Antares (bottom), a red supergiant 40,000 times more luminous than our sun
Constellation Scorpio - Milky way and constellation of Scorpius - Scorpius is one of the few constellations whose star pattern resembles its name. The curved stinging tail is marked by the star Shahula, probably from the Arabic 'Al Shaulah' meaning 'raised tail', as seen in a scorpion. In the body of the scorpion lies Antares, meaning 'rival of Mars' for its reddish colour. The head of the scorpion is echoed in the star name Dschubba, meaning 'forehead'. However, the scorpion shape looks trucated in our photograph and it is. In ancient times it extended into what is now Libra, where the brightest stars (not seen here) still carry the resonant names Zeubenelgenubi (a1,2 Lib, the southern claw) and Zeubeneschamali (ss Lib, the northern claw). This celestial scorpion was sent by a jealous Artemis to kill Orion, who still fees the venomous insect: as Scorpius rises Orion sets, and vice - versa. However, he could not be saved even by Asclepius, the god of healing, who was later sent into the heavens as Ophiuchus, the serpent wrestler, a symbol still used by the medical profession. The constellation bestrides one of the richest parts of the southern Milky Way and is adorned by many beautiful stars. It is rich in young stars clusters and the nebulae from which they spring. Some examples are listed below. This image was a long exposure made to show the Milky Way

Orion Constellation - Constellation of Orion - Orion the Hunter is one of the most familar and best known constellations. There is extensive and varied mythology about this beautiful collection of stars, but the most common Greek legend has Orion as a giant huntsman, and he appears in this role in Homer's Odyssey. The most persistent legend seems to be that he died from the sting of a giant scorpion, which was placed in the sky so that Orion sets as the Scorpius rises, in an eternal chase across the sky. The momorable outline of the Hunter proudly bestrides the celestial equator and is equally visible from both hemispheres. The distinctive, equally spaced line of stars of Orion's Belt are more or less on the equator and are framed by quartet of bright and colourful stars. More subtle is Orions short sword, hanging from his belt. Under dark skies or in binoculars the central 'star' is distinctly misty. This is the famous Orion nebula, one of many well known telescopic objects that fill this part of the sky. The westernmost Orion Belt star delta Orionis (Minkata) is about a quarter of a degree of arc south of the celestial equator and all three belt stars are within 2 degrees of it. This means they rise and set due east or west of the observer and track the equator across the sky during the night, tracing straight lines in star trail photographs. Note that Orion is upside down as seen from the southern hemisphere, where it is often called 'the saucepan', with the Belt stars forming the base and the Sword stars the handle

Cone and Hubble Nebulae in the Unicorn - Cone and Hubble nebulae in Monoceros - The Cone nebula, at the bottom left, is an H II region located about 2600 years - light from Earth. The bright star in the middle left is S Monocerotis, a star of magnitude 4.7. Lower right, the Hubble nebula, overexposed. This large area of emission nebulosity and patch of blue reflection nebulosity also contains the Cone Nebula, a dark nebula at the lower right corner of the red nebulae. At the bottom right of the frame is NGC 2261, Hubble's Variable Nebula, in this image looking like an overexposed mis - shaped star because of the extreme processing needed to bring out the faint nebulosity in the Cone Nebula
Nebula of the Eagle (IC 4703) in the Snake - detail - Star - birth in the Eagle nebula. - The Pillars of Creation “” is undoubtedly the most famous image realized by the Hubble space telescope, obtained in 1995. 20 years later, the same telescope rephotographed this region with more finesse. These cold gas columns are home to star embryos. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has revisited one of its most iconic and popular images: the Eagle Nebula's Pillars of Creation. This image shows the pillars as seen in visible light, capturing the multi - coloured glow of gas clouds, wispy tendrils of dark cosmic dust, and the rust - colored elephants trunks of the nebula's famous pillars. The dust and gas in the pillars is seared by the intense radiation from young stars and eroded by strong winds from massive nearby stars. With these new images comes better contrast and a clearer view for astronomers to study how the structure of the pillars is changing over time.
Nebula NGC 6188 in the Altar - The NGC 6188 nebula and NGC 6193 in Ara - Nebula NGC 6188 is located about 4000 years from Earth. It is home to a cluster of young stars NGC 6193, formed three million years ago. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. Here we see two bright stars whose radiant energy is beating down on to the surface of a dark cloud, very similar to the Horsehead in Orion. The cloud itself is opaque and because of that, very cold inside. These conditions are ideal for the formation of organic molecules on the surfaces of the chilled dust particles. The opacity of the cloud protects the fragile molecules within from the energetic radiation of nearby stars, but as its surface is gradually warmed and eroded, the delicate organic molecules are destroyed and the hydrogen released glows as a distinctive red emission nebula
Southern Crown Nebula - The CRA reflection nebula - R Coronae Australis is a region of star formations visible in the southern hemisphere. It is located about 500 light years away from Earth. On the right, the globular cluster NGC 6723, located 30 000 light years from Earth in Sagittarius. Image made with the 1.2m Telescope of Schmidt UK from Siding Spring. Corona Australis (the southern crown, CRA) is in the far southern sky but visible from the southern states of the USA. The constellation is small but distinctive. The conspicuous globular cluster NGC 6723 is at the western (right) edge of the photograph, but it is in Sagittarius, and is about 30,000 light years distant. Almost all the nebulosity here is starlight, reflected from minute grains of dust, some of which gather into darker condensations ('molecular clouds'), blotting out the background stars. Fainter features can be seen here. Shiny NGC 6726 - 27 near middle of image contains both a visual binary and a variable star. Other wispy nebulae in the western part of the dark cloud betray the presence of young, hidden stars
Dark Nebula LDN 673 in Aquarius - LDN 673 dark nebula in Aquila - This telescopic close - up looks towards the region at a fragmented Aquila dark cloud complex identified as LDN 673, stretching across a field of view slightly wider than the full moon. In the scene, visible indications of energetic outflows associated with young stars include the small red tinted nebulosity RNO 109 at top left and Herbig - Haro object HH32 above and right of center. The dark clouds in Aquila are estimated to be some 600 light - years away

Nebula NGC 6559 in Sagittarius - NGC 6559 and IC 1274 - 75 in Sagittarius - Located in Sagittarius, this nebula is located at a distance of about 5000 years - light from Earth. Image made with the 1.2m Telescope of Schmidt UK from Siding Spring. This dusty region is probably associated with the brighter and better - known Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae which are nearby in the sky and part of the same molecular cloud. The soft red glow of fluorescent hydrogen is evidence that there are young hot stars associated with the dusty clouds. These bright stars also illuminate the tiny solid particles, producing blue reflection nebulae bordering some of the emission regions. The dust is also evident in silhouette, both as sinuous dark lanes winding through the luminous gas and as the dark patches obscuring the ancient, yellow stars that populate the central parts of the Milky Way
Elephant tube nebula (VDB 142) in Cephee - The Elephant Trunk Nebula (VDB 142) in Cepheus - IC1396, VDB 142. Nebula located about 2700 years - light from Earth. Image obtained with a telescope 61 cm in diameter. The Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) in Cepheus is part of the larger IC 1396 complex which spans a large area of the sky measuring 170 by 140 arc - minutes and is one of the brightest emission nebulae with a magnitude of 3.5. The western portion of IC 1396 contains the Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) which is characterized with H - II emissions, dark lanes and globules as well as a small reflection nebula. This stellar nursery lies at a distance of 2,720 light - years away. Image taken with a 24 - inch telescope
Dark Nebula in Scorpio - A dark cloud in Scorpius, wide field - This dark nebula is located about 5000 years from Earth. Image obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This curious un - named nebula is governed by radiation from very luminous stars some distance from the nebula. The direction of the radiation source can be seen from the flow pattern in the dark cloud and the extensive bright red rims at the end of the nebula that is exposed to radiation from the hot stars. This part of the nebula is reminiscent of the famous Horsehead nebula in Orion, which is also the consequence of starlight destroying a dark cloud. The source of the energy here is the Scorpius OB association, a group of brilliant, very hot stars, about 5000 light years away from us
Nebula IC 1318 in the Swan - IC 1318 the Butterfly nebula in Cygnus - IC 1318 is a very extended emission nebula that surrounds the star Gamma Cygni (Sadr), visible towards the middle of the image. LDN 889 is a vast region of dark nebulae that separates the nebula on the left from Sadr. On the extreme right, another dark nebula, B343. This is a large area of emission nebulosity around Sadr, Gamma Cygnii, the brightest star in this photo and the heart of Cygnus. Stretching more than 2 x 3 degrees here, the nebulosity actually extends far out of the photo. Most of the nebulosity is fairly faint, but brighter patches can be seen in a modest instrument. The two sections of nebulosity to the left of Gamma are called the Butterfly Nebula and have the catalog designation of IC 1318. LDN 889 is the large area of dark nebulosity that separates the two halves of the Butterfly Nebula, and B 343 is the small but very dense dark nebula on the right side of the image

Elephant tube nebula (VDB 142) in Cephee - The Elephant Trunk Nebula (VDB 142) in Cepheus: IC1396, VDB 142. Nebula located about 2700 light years from Earth. Image obtained with a bezel Tele Vue NP127iS, through 3 different filters that demonstrate oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur - The Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) in Cepheus is part of the larger IC 1396 complex which spans a large area of the sky measuring 170 by 140 arc-minutes and is one of the brightest emission nebulae with a magnitude of 3.5. The western portion of IC 1396 contains the Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) which is characterized with H-II emissions, dark lanes and globules as well as a small reflection nebula. The IC 1396 complex is technically a star cluster (aka Cr 439, Trumpler 37) owing to the presence of a developing open but loose cluster at the heart of this rich nebulosity. This open star cluster is comprised of 50-100 member stars which vary in brightness spanning an area of approximately 50 'in diameter and which are not very well detached from the background sky. This stellar nursery lies at a distance of 2,720 light-years away - Image taken in combining the light from 3 different filters tracing emission from oxygen, hydrogen, and sulphur
Nebula LDN 988 in the Swan - LDN 988 nebula in Cygnus - Region around the dark nebula LDN 988 in the Swan. Area around the dark nebula LDN 988 with two blue reflection nebulae GN 21.01.3 and LBN 409. The emission nebula in the upper right of the image near the open cluster NGC 7031 seems uncataloged. Another interesting object is [C86] L988a. This is a looped nebula in LDN988. Sh2 - 120 and 121 are the two small HII regions left of center. Faint dust makes some of the background appear blue from reflection

Barnard's Loop detail and M78 nebula in Orion - Barnard's Loop detail and M78 nebula in Orion - Barnard's Loop is a very low emission nebula, very large, that surrounds the great Orion nebula. Here, the brightest part of the Loop, with lower left the cluster of stars NGC 2112, and to the right the nebula by refexion M78. Also visible is a dark nebula LDN 1622 at the top left of the image. Barnard's Loop is an extremely faint emission nebula which is part of an amazing, even larger complex of nebulosity in the constellation of Orion. This photo shows only the brightest central portion of the loop which runs diagonally across the frame here from lower left to upper right. NGC 2112, a ninth magnitude open cluster 11 arc minutes in diameter and containing about 50 stars, is seen at lower left - center, and reflection nebulae M78 and NGC 2071 are at lower right. An interesting dark nebula, LDN 1622, lies at the upper left of the image, surrounded by very faint emission nebulosity, with a hint of reflection nebulosity on the outlying western edge
Nebula NGC 7023 in Cephee - Iris Nebula in Cepheus - The nebula of the Iris (NGC 7023) is a reflexion nebula illuminated by the star HD 200775. Infrared observations indicate that this nebula contains PAH (aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons), molecules composed of carbon atoms and hydrogen. NGC 7023 (The Iris Nebula) is located 1400 Light Years away. The bright star HD 200775 shining through the nebula NGC 7023 is a 10 solar mass star centrally imbedded in a region surrounded by ambient molecular cloud material. Infrared observations indicate that this nebula may contain complex carbon molecules known as PaHS

Nebulae B175 and VDB 152 in Cephee - Dark nebula B175 and reflection nebula VDB 152 - Located about 1400 years ago - light in the constellation Cephee, a large dust trail leads to a bluish nebula. This is the dark nebula, Barnard 175, which faces the nebula by reflexion VDB 152 (Ced 201). The reflection nebula vdB 152 is really very faint. It lies about 1400 light - years away, along the northern Milky Way in the constellation Cepheus. Near the edge of a large molecular cloud, pockets of cosmic dust in the region block light from background stars or scatter light from the embedded bright star (top) giving parts of the nebula a characteristic blue color. Ultraviolet light from the star is also thought to cause a dim reddish luminescence in the nebular dust. Although stars do form in molecular clouds, this star seems to have only accidentally wandered into the area, as its measured velocity through interstellar space is very different from the cloud's velocity
Horsehead Nebula (B33) in Orion - Horsehead nebula in Orion - The horse head nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark nebula located in front of the IC 434 emission nebula about 1500 years - light of the Earth in the constellation Orion. Lower left is the reflexion nebula, NGC 2023. This curious dark nebula is one of the best - known images in astronomy, probably because of its chance likeness to a recognisable form. The horse - head shape is an extension of a large cloud of dust which fills the lower part (east) of the picture and hides the light of stars beyond. The outer surface of the dusty gas (IC 434) runs roughly north - south and is illuminated by sigma Orionis (off the top of the picture) which causes the hydrogen there to fluoresce, outlining the horse - head shape. The diffuse haze to the left of the image (north) is scattered light from the bright star zeta Orionis. Though conspicuous here, the Horsehead is very difficult to see visually, even with a large telescope. A bright star is partially enveloped in the dust cloud and its scattered light is seen as the large, irregular blue reflection nebula, NGC 2023. All these objects are about 1500 light years distant
Constellation Ophiuchus - Constellation of Ophiuchus - The constellation Ophiuchus separates the constellation of the Snake into two parts. The constellation of Ophiuchus is located between Serpens Caput and Serpens Cauda, two parts of the constellation of Serpens. The southern part of Ophiuchus contains one of the darkest and most visually distinctive dark clouds of the Miky Way. It is popularly known as the Dark Horse nebula - - the body of the horse runs north - south and its legs point towards the bright star Antares. The hind quarters of the horse make up the (smoker's) Pipe nebula, with the stem pointing to Antares. The dust of forelegs reaches a long way in the direction of Antares, where it is illuminated by stars associated with Rho Ophiuchi to make a distinctive reflection nebula. The dusty clouds of the Dark Horse nebula hide the northern part of the Milky Way's central bulge. The southern part (in Sagittarius) is relatively unobscured. Without this dust the extent of the Milky Way's bulge would be much more apparent to the unaided eye and without it our understanding of the nature of our galaxy as a flattened disk might have come sooner
Nebula IC 1318 in the Swan - Gamma Cygnus, IC 1318, NGC 6888 - IC 1318 is a very extended emission nebula that surrounds the star Gamma Cygni (Sadr), visible towards the middle of the image. Lower right is the nebula NGC 6888 which surrounds a star Wolf - Rayet. This complex of red emission nebulosity in Cygnus surrounds the bright 2.2 magnitude star Gamma Cygni, or Sadr, just above right of the center of the frame. Above Sadr are two patches of nebulosity designated as IC 1318, popularly called the Butterfly Nebula. At the lower left of the frame is NGC 6888, the Crescent Nebula, a very interesting nebula that surrounds a Wolf - Rayet star

Nebulae of the horse's head and M42 in Orion - Horsead nebula and Orion nebula - Dark Nebula of the horse's head (IC434 - B33). On the right, the large Orion nebula (M42) is a vast region of star formation. This large complex of nebulosity is located about 1,500 light years away in Orion. The Orion complex is a gigantic stellar nursery where stars are forming out of the dust and gas in the region. Young energetic stars excite the gas in the region ionizing it and causing it to glow in the hydrogen - alpha and oxygen III emission lines. The brightest star in the photo at left at magnitude 1.8 is Alnilam, the middle star of the three distinctive stars in the belt of Orion. At the bottom is the Flame, NGC 2024, and the dark nebula B33, the Horsehead Nebula. Top right is a patch of blue reflection nebulosity NGC 1973 - 4 - 5 and the beautiful Orion Nebula, M 42
Horse's Head Nebula - The Horsehead nebula in Orion - The Horse's Head Nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark nebula located in front of the IC 434 emission nebula at about 1500 years - light of the Earth in the constellation Orion. Lower left is the reflexion nebula, NGC 2023. The Horsehead nebula is located in the constellation of Orion, slightly below the left - most star of the three that form the Hunter's belt. It is part of a vast molecular cloud of dust and gas that includes the Great Orion Nebula and extends throughout the entire constellation as well. Here we see the Horsehead as it appeared 1,500 years ago, due to distance and the time it takes light to travel
Horsehead Nebula (IC 434) in Orion - Horsehead Nebula (B33) in Orion - The horse's head nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark nebula located in front of the IC 434 emitting nebula about 1500 years - light from Earth in the constellation Orion. At the bottom left, the nebula NGC 2024 with just above the star Alnitak, a supergiant star belonging to the Baudrier of Orion. Towards the center of the image, a reflexion nebula, NGC 2023. This distinctive red emission nebula (IC 434) is the result of radiation from sigma Orionis interacting with the surface of a dusty cloud of gas from which projects the dark shape of the head of a horse. Sigma is the second brightest star in the picture and is at about the same distance from the Sun as the nebula. The brightest star here is zeta Orionis, easily visible to the unaided eye as the easternmost star in the line of three which form Orion's Belt. Alnitak (Zeta Orionis) is a supergiant star with a brightness 35,000 times greater than the Sun. Its mass is 20 times the solar mass. Partly obscured by the glare of zeta is the curious yellowish nebula NGC 2024, whose energy comes from stars hidden in the dark lane, while other nebulae simply reflect the light of embedded hot stars and appear blue. All these objects are about 1500 light years distant
Antares star and the Rho Ophiuchi nebula - This coloree nebula represents the visible part of a very large molecule cloud, the Ophiuchus cloud. This star-forming region is located about 520 light years away. The brightest star below is the star Antares, from the Scorpio. On the right, the M4 star cluster. View of the region surrounding the bright triple star Rho Ophiuchus (in the blue cloud). This star-forming region is located at about 520 light years in Scorpius constellation. The area is highlighted by the bright star Antares (bottom), a red supergiant 40,000 times more luminous than our sun
Constellation of the Southern Cross - Constellation Crux. The Southern Cross - With the lack of a significant pole star in the southern sky (Sigma Octantis is closest to the pole, but is so faint as to be useless for the purpose), two of the stars of Crux (Alpha and Gamma, Acrux and Gacrux respectively) are commonly used to mark south. Following the line defined by the two stars for approximately 4.5 times the distance between them leads to a point close to the Southern Celestial Pole
Nebula M78 in Orion - M78 nebula in Orion - The nebula M78 (NGC 2068) is located about 1300 years - light from Earth and extends over 4 years - light. M78, (NGC 2068) is part of the Orion complex, a large region of star - forming gas and dust centred around M42 and M43. It is the brightest diffuse reflection nebula in the sky, and fairly easy to see with binoculars (and almost visible to the naked eye, claim some observers). M78 is some 1600 light - years away and around 4 light - years across
Horse's Head Nebula and IC 434 in Orion - The Horsehead nebula in Orion - The Horse's Head Nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark nebula located in front of the IC 434 emitting nebula about 1500 years - Earth light in the constellation Orion. Here, we see the Horsehead as it appeared 1,500 years ago, due to distance and the time it takes light to travel. The bright complex of dust and gas below the Horsehead reflects the light given off by the bright star near it's center and is one of the brightest examples of reflection nebulae in the northern sky. The central star is surrounded with a thin shell of hydrogen that glows red by emitting it's own light in a rare example of a unique process called vibrational fluorescence
Antares star and the nebula Rho Ophiuchi - Antares and Rho Ophiuchi cloud - This coloree nebula represents the visible part of a very large molecule cloud, the cloud of Ophiuchus. This star-forming region is about 520 years old - light. The brightest star at the bottom left is the star Antares, from the Scorpio. The triple star Rho Ophiuchus is located in the middle of the blue cloud at the top of the picture. On the right, surrounded by a nebula, the star Sigma Scorpii. The globular clusters M4 (at the bottom of the image) and NGC 6144 (near Antares) are also visible on this image obtained with the UK Schmidt telescope of 1.2m. This photograph shows a portion of a great swath of obscuring gas and dust in the constellations Ophiuchus and Scorpius, and illustrates what is probably the most colourful region in the entire sky. The almost garish colours are due to the brilliance and contrasting colours of the stars, by whose reflected light we see the dust clouds. Dominating the picture is the first - magnitude red supergiant star Antares, or Apha Scorpii. Because of its deep red colour the light reflected from the dust has a rich reddish hue, unusual among such reflection nebulae which are generally associated with bright bluish stars and normally have the appearance of the nebula surrounding Rho Ophiuchus (top). Clearly to be seen on this picture is the discolouring effect of the dust clouds on the stars and nebulae seen through them: the dust selectively absorbs the blue light leaving the obscured objects with a reddish - brown tinge. Also visible in this extraordinary photograph is the yellowish globular star cluster M4, at 5700 light years (9 times the distance of the foreground dust and stars) the nearest globular cluster to the Sun. Partly surrounding Sigma Scorpii at the right of the picture is a red emission nebula, completing the most comprehensive collection of nebular types ever seen in one photograph. There's also two globular clusters, one
Dark stars and nebulae in Sagittarius and Ophiuchus - Dark Nebulae in Sagittarius and Scorpius - Dark nebulae on the edge of the Pipe nebula. This complex of dust clouds that block the light of the stars is located between the Sagittarius and the Scorpio, near the center of our lactee road. Also visible, the nebulae emitted from the Lagoon, Trifide, and Omega. Image obtained with Canon 20Da, 50 mm f/1.4, 6 x 5 min ISO 1600 poses. This amazing complex of dark nebulae and dust in Sagittarius and Ophiuchus lies near the central bulge of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Dark nebulae are non - luminous clouds of obscuring matter and dust which block the light from stars behind them. Many of the dark nebulae seen here are listed in E.E. Barnard's catalog of dark nebulae and are given a “” B” designation, such as B72, the Snake Nebula. Almost the entire complex of dark nebulae seen on the right hand side of the image make up the “Dark Horse and Rider””. The Pipe Nebula, Lynds Dark Nebula 1773, comprises the hind quarter and back leg of the Dark Horse, which is seen vertically in this image. B63 is the front leg, B270 is the Horse's head, and B276 is the Rider's head. The area is also filled with star clouds, bright emission nebulae such as M8 - the Lagoon Nebula, M20 - the Trifid Nebula, and M17 - the Omega Nebula. The small Sagittarius star cloud, M24, is at the upper left, and the large Sagittarius star cloud at lower left. The center of our galaxy lies near the bottom edge of the image. Image taken with a Canon 20Da DSLR, 50 mm f/1.4, and 6 x 5 min exposures at ISO 1600
Image obtained with the 1.2m Schmidt UK Telescope from Siding Spring. All these objects are about 1500 light years distant. This photograph was produced by combining three separate photographs taken with the 1.2m UK Schmidt Telescope through different coloured filters
Nebulae NGC 2024 and Horse's Head - Flame nebula and the Horsehead Nebula - This image shows the nebula NGC 2024 (left), the small nebula NGC 2023 (right middle) and the nebula of the horse's head (top right). The bright star on the top left is the star Alnitak. Visible infrared composite image. This image shows the spectacular star - forming region known as the Flame Nebula, or NGC 2024, in the constellation of Orion (the Hunter) and its surroundings. The view also includes the glow of the reflection nebula NGC 2023, middle right, and the ghostly outline of the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) towards the upper right. The bright bluish star top left is one of the three bright stars forming the Belt of Orion, Alnitak. The image was created from VISTA in the near - infrared part of the spectrum and optical datas

Elephant tube nebula (VDB 142) in Cephee - The Elephant Trunk Nebula (VDB 142) in Cepheus - IC1396, VDB 142. Nebula located about 2700 years - light from Earth. The IC 1396 complex is technically a star cluster (aka Cr 439, Trumpler 37) owing to the presence of a developing open but loose cluster at the heart of this rich nebulosity. This open star cluster is comprised of 50 - 100 member stars which vary in brightness spanning an area of approximately 50 'in diameter and which are not very well detached from the background sky. This stellar nursery lies at a distance of 2,720 light - years away
Antares Stars -Rho Ophiuchus and Pipe Nebula - Pipe Dark Nebula to Antares and Rho Ophiuchus: The Pipe Nebula, visible to the left of the image, is part of a larger region of dark nebulae that extends to the stars Antares and Rho Ophiuchus (right). Seen at left of this photo, the Pipe Nebula is a very large dark nebula wich is part of an even larger complex of dark nebulae The complex of dark nebulosity stretches 13 degrees in what has been called a “” dark river”” from the Pipe Nebula all the way to the vicinity of Antares and Rho Ophiuchus. On the right side of the frame is a large complex of red emission nebulae near Antares and Rho Ophiuchus
Nebula IC 1318 in the Swan - IC 1318 Butterfly nebula in Cygnus - IC 1318 is a very large emission nebula that surrounds the supergiant star Gamma Cygni (Sadr), visible towards the middle of the image. LDN 889 is a vast region of dark nebulae that separates the nebula on the left from Sadr. On the extreme right, another dark nebula, B343. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. Supergiant star Gamma Cygni lies at the center of the Northern Cross, famous asterism in the constellation Cygnus the Swan. Known by the proper name Sadr, the bright star also lies at the center of this gorgeous skyscape, featuring a complex of stars, dust clouds, and glowing nebulae along the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. The field of view spans over 4 degrees (eight Full Moons) on the sky and includes emission nebula IC 1318 and open star cluster NGC 6910. Left of Gamma Cyg and shaped like two glowing cosmic wings divided by a long dark dust lane, IC 1318's popular name is understandably the Butterfly Nebula. Above and left of Gamma Cyg, are the young, still tightly grouped stars of NGC 6910. Some distance estimates for Gamma Cyg place it at around 750 light - years while estimates for IC 1318 and NGC 6910 range from 2,000 to 5,000 light - years. The color image is based on data coming from a number of different photographic plates taken in 1991 and 1992 by the Palomar Observatory's 48 - inch (1.2 - meter) Samuel Oschin Telescope as a part of the second National Geographic Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS II)
Nebulae of the horse's head and M42 in Orion - Orion deepfield - Dark Nebula of the horse's head (IC434 - B33). Further down, the large Orion nebula (M42) vast star-forming region. Mosaic of images obtained during more than 20 hours of application, using an H - Alpha filter. The brightest star in the photo at upper right at magnitude 1.8 is Alnilam, the middle star of the three distinctive stars in the belt of Orion. At the left is the Flame, NGC 2024, and below it is dark nebula B33, the Horsehead Nebula. Below is a patch of blue reflection nebulosity NGC 1973 - 4 - 5 and bottom is the beautiful Orion Nebula, M 42. Long - exposure image with an Hydrogen alpha filter
