Artist view of Cygnus X-1 - Cygnus X-1 is a binary star X and was the first black hole candidate. This system consists of the 226868 HD star, a supergeant star, orbiting around a black hole. A stellar black hole is born from the gravitational collapse of a massive star. The stellar black holes have a mass of some solar masses. A black hole is a region of space whose gravitation is so strong that it will prevent any form of material or radiation from escaping. Cygnus X-1 is an X-ray binary system and the first black hole candidates to be discovered
Isaac Newton
Supermassif black hole - Artist view - Supermassive Black hole - Artist view - Artist view of a supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy. This artist's concept illustrates a supermassive black hole with millions to billions times the mass of our sun. Supermassive black holes are enormously dense objects buried at the hearts of galaxies. (Smaller black holes also exist throughout galaxies.) In this illustration, the supermassive black hole at the center is surrounded by matter flowing onto the black hole in what is termed an accretion disk. This disk forms as the dust and gas in the galaxy falls onto the hole, attracted by its gravity

Galaxy NGC 891 in Andromede - Edge - on spiral galaxy NGC 891 in Andromeda - Spiral galaxy seen by the slice located at a distance of 10 million years - light. Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. NGC 891 is a classic example of an edge - on galaxy bisected by a dark lane. It is actually a spiral galaxy seen edge - on from the side, so it's spiral structure is hidden from our line of sight. Recent observations indicate that NGC 891 may actually be a barred spiral galaxy, making it an SBB galaxy according to Hubble classification type
Elliptical Galaxy M110 (NGC 205) in Andromede - Elliptical galaxy M110 (NGC 205) in Andromeda - The elliptical galaxy M110, Andromede's satellite galaxy, is about the same distance from us as M31, about 2.9 million years - light. It is of type E6 “special” because it presents some unusual dark structures (probably dust clouds). Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel, composite of several images. M110 is the second small companion (along with M32) to our sister galaxy, M31, the Andromeda Nebula
Spiral galaxy NGC 247 in the whale - Spiral galaxy NGC 247 in Cetus - Dwarf spiral galaxy in the whale, located about 8 million years ago - light from Earth. Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. It has a slightly irregular shape on one end where the spiral arm has a hollowed out appearance on long - exposure photographs. It is located about 5 degrees north of its famous neighbor in Sculptor, Galaxy NGC 253. It is about the same size as NGC 253, but two magnitudes fainter. Both galaxies are fairly close to us at 8 - 12 million light years
Spiral Galaxy M51 in Hunting Dogs - Galaxy Spiral M51 - The spiral galaxy M51 (NGC 5194) is located about 37 million years away - light from Earth. Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. M51 is a wonderful bright face - on spiral galaxy located about 37 million light years away from us. It was one of the first discoveries made by Charles Messier in 1773, and it was the first galaxy where spiral structure was observed, by Lord Rosse in 1845. A faint companion galaxy, NGC 5195, seen here to the right of M51, seems to be interacting with M51. NGC 5195 shines at 9.6 magnitude and is about 5 arc minutes in diameter
Lion Triplet (spiral galaxies M65 - M66 - NGC 3628) - Trio of Galaxies in Leo M65, M66, NGC 3628 - M66, with its neighbors M65 and NGC 3628, forms a remarkable triplet of galaxies, called the Lion Triplet or the M66 Group, located at a distance of about 35 million years - light. All three are spiral galaxies. Image obtained in 1998 with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. This trio of galaxies in Leo is located at a distance of about 35 million light years. M66 is at upper left, M65 is below it at lower right, and NGC 3628 is at right. All are normal spiral galaxies, but NGC 3628 is seen edge - on, with a prominent dust lane obscuring the central portion of the galaxy
Spiral galaxy M33 in the Triangle - Spiral galaxy M33 in Triangulum - M33, (NGC 598), the galaxy of the Triangle, is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the local group, just like our galaxy or Andromede galaxy. Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. The Pinwheel Galaxy, M33, is a very large, beautiful, face - on spiral galaxy. It is more difficult to observe at magnification than its size and magnitude would indicate under skies that are not dark because of it's fairly low surface brightness. Still, under very dark and transparent skies, M33 can be seen with the unaided eye by keen - eyed observers. Several emission nebulae inside of M33 can be seen as pink patches in this photo. The largest and most prominent emission nebula is NGC 604 which is almost 1,500 light - years in diameter. Such clouds are star factories where gas condenses under gravitational attraction and stars are born. It is one of the largest clouds of ionized hydrogen gas in the known universe
Elliptical Galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) - The galaxy Centaurus A - The galaxy NGC 5128 is located about 13 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Centaurus. This giant galaxy is a powerful radio source known as Centaurus A. The central dark band would be the rest of dust in a spiral galaxy smaller than the giant galaxy would have cannibalized. Centaurus A is an active galaxy whose energy comes from a supermassive black hole. Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. Designated as radio source Centaurus A, NGC 5128 is one of the most peculiar galaxies in the sky. It is bisected by a dark lane that is considered the dust remnant of a smaller spiral galaxy that was cannibalized by the larger elliptical galaxy. The collision resulted in a burst of star formation. A gigantic black hole equivalent to one billion solar masses resides inside NGC 5128
Spiral Galaxy M83 in Hydra - Spiral galaxy M83 in Hydra - The galaxy M83 (NGC 5236) is located about 15 million years away from Earth. This galaxy is intermediate between a classic spiral and a barree spiral Image obtained in 1995 with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. M83 (NGC 5236) is located in the southern constellation Hydra at 15 million light years from the sun. It is classified as intermediate between normal and barred spiral galaxies. Image obtained with a 130 mm refracting telescope
Spiral Galaxy M31 in Andromede - Spiral galaxy M31 in Andromeda - The galaxy of Andromede is located about 2 million years ago - light from Earth. Two satellite galaxies accompany it: M32 (NGC 221) in the center left, and M110 (NGC 205) below. Like the lactee path, the Andromede galaxy belongs to the local group, making up about thirty galaxies. Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel, several composite images. M31, the Great galaxy in Andromeda, is a gigantic collection of more than 300 billion stars and is located about 2 million light years from Earth. Companion dwarf elliptical galaxies M32 and M110 are also visible. M31 and its companions are part of our local group of galaxies, which includes the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds, and M33. The Andromeda Galaxy is headed towards our Milky Way Galaxy and is expected to collide with it and possibly merge into a gigantic elliptical galaxy in about 3 billion years

Galaxies M81 and M82 in the Great Bear - Galaxies M81 and M82 in Ursa major - M81 (left) is a spiral galaxy. M82 (right) an irregular galaxy. Separated for about 150,000 light years, these two galaxies belong to the galaxy cluster closest to our local group. These galaxies are approximately 12 million light years away from Earth. Image made with an amateur instrument, a 130 mm bezel. At 12 million light years distance, the nearby proximity of galaxies M81 and M82 makes them one of the most spectacular sights in the spring sky

Galaxies M81 - M82 in the Great Bear and SN 1993J - Galaxies M81 and M82 in Ursa Major with SN 1993J - In 1993 the supernova SN 1993J appeared in the galaxy M81. M81 (left) is a spiral galaxy. M82 (right) an irregular galaxy. Separated for about 150,000 light years, these two galaxies belong to the galaxy cluster closest to our local group. These galaxies are approximately 12 million light years away from Earth. In 1993, a star inside of M81 exploded in a supernova named SN 1993J. M81, seen here at left, is a grand design spiral galaxy that forms a physical pair with irregular galaxy M82. They are separated by 150,000 light years at a distance of 12 million light years. This galaxy group, consisting of M81, M82, NGC 3077 and NGC 2976, is the nearest galaxy group to our own local group of galaxies that contains the Milky Way, Magellanic Clouds, M33, and the M31 - M32 - M110 system
Wind emis by a Black Hole Supermassif - Artist view - Wind from Supermassive Black hole - Artist view - Wind artist's view emitted by a supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy. These extremely strong winds could hinder star formation within the galaxy. Supermassive black holes at the cores of galaxies blast radiation and ultra-fast winds outward, as illustrated in this artist's conception. New data from NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuStar) and the European Space Agency's (ESA's) XMM-Newton telescopes show that these winds, which contain gases of highly ionized atoms, blow in a nearly spherical fashion, emanating in every direction, as shown in the artwork. The findings rule out the possibility that the winds blow in narrow beams. With the shape and extent of the winds known, the researchers were able to determine the winds' strength. The high-speed winds are powerful enough to shut down star formation throughout a galaxy

Primitive black hole - Artist view - Primitive Black hole - Artist view - Artist view of a primitive galactic black hole. The presence of 13 billion-year-old black holes was observed by the Spitzer space telescope. These distant black holes appear in the early stages of their formation; their accretion disc contains no dust. This artist's conception illustrates one of the most primitive supermassive black holes known (central black dot) at the core of a young, star-rich galaxy. Astronomers using Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope have uncovered two of these early objects, dating back to about 13 billion years ago. The monstrous black holes are among the most distant known, and appear to be in the very earliest stages of formation, earlier than any observed so far. Unlike all other supermassive black holes probed to date, this primitive duo, called J0005-0006 and J0303-0019, lacks dust. As the drawing shows, gas swirls around a black hole in what is called an accretion disk. Usually, the accretion disk is surrounded by a dark doughnut-like dusty structure called a dust torus. But for the primitive black holes, the dust tori are missing and only gas disks are observed. This is because the early universe was clean as a whistle. Enough time had not passed for molecules to clump together into dust particles. Some black holes forming in this era thus started out lacking dust. As they grew, gobbling up more and more mass, they are thought to have accumulated dusty rings. This illustration also shows how supermassive black holes can distort space and light around them (see warped stars behind black hole). Stars from the galaxy can be seen sprinkled throughout, and distant mergers between other galaxies are illustrated in the background

A black hole is a region of space where gravity is so strong that it stops any form of material or radiation from escaping. Combining observations done with Eso's Very Large Telescope and Nasa's Chandra X-ray telescope, astronomers have uncovered the most powerful pair of jets ever seen from a stellar black hole. The black hole blows a huge bubble of hot gas, 1000 light-years across or twice as large and tens of times more powerful than the other such microquasars. The stellar black hole belongs to a binary system as pictured in this artist's impression
