Portaits of the kings Louis IV of France (920 or 921-954) (Figure 81) and Lothaire (Lothar) I (795-855), emperor of the Romans, King of Baviere, Italy and Middle Francia (Figure 82). Both have a tunic and a coat of different lengths. Their crowns differ, that of Louis IV is closed like a diademe and his sceptre is topped by a pine cone, Lothaire wears a simple circle of gold decorated with flowers, and his sceptre is topped by a flower. For the French, as for the Anglo Saxons, the mantle was reserved for persons of high rank. Hand-coloured copper engraving, in “Images historique des costumes des principaux peuples de l'Antiquite et du Middle Ages” by Robert Von Spalart, published in 1796. King Louis IV and King Lothar I. Louis IV (81) wears a long tunic and a mantle that is not fastened anywhere with a clasp, just simply thrown over the breast; his crown is closed like a diadem, and his sceptre ends in a pine cone. Lothar I (82) is clothed like Louis IV, only his mantle is shorter and arranged like a Greek chlamys; the mantle is bordered with gold embroidery. The crown is a simple circle with several raised flowers; the sceptre is similarly surmounted with a flower.To the Franks and the Anglo Saxons, [the mantle] was reserved for persons of elevated rank (81).
