Mars - Illustration - Mars - Illustration - Artist's view of the planet Mars. The three volcanoes of Tharsis and Olympus Mons are visible on the left. In the centre is the great canyon Valles Marineris. A “” full””” Mars. In this image the massive volcano Olympus Mons is clearly visible upper left of center, while near center are the three Tharsis Montes volcanoes. All these volcanoes are believed to be extinct. To the right of the Tharsis Montes are the deep canyons of Valles Marineris, a meandering network of channels as long as the United States is wide. Mars has been known historically as a bright, reddish “” star”” in Earth's sky. The ruddy hue is due to the presence of iron oxide (i.e., rust) on the martian surface. Mars is often host to white clouds of water - ice crystals (like the high - altitude cirrus clouds on Earth) and experiences seasonal dust storms that can cover the entire planet
Ice on the Moon - Illustration - Lunar ice - Illustration - Artist's view of ice on the surface of a crater that remains perpetually in the shade of the Sun, near the poles. Water from an encounter with an icy comet has collected in the perpetual shade of a deep crater where the temperature is a constant - 380o F. In 1998, the unmanned Lunar Prospector probe discovered evidence for water ice on the surface of the moon. Some scientists believe that as much as 10 to 300 million tons of ice may reside at the moon's North and South poles. The source of the ice is thought to be from one or more comets that struck the moon's surface four billion years ago. (It is thought that Earth's water may have come from comets as well.) Unfortunately, the moon's small size and lack of an atmosphere caused it to lose almost all of its accumulated water to space. Any water that does remain on the moon would likely be on the poles, hidden in craters and depressions shaded from the Sun
Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR - Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR: Earth photo obtained by satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) on July 6, 2015. This satellite, launched on 11 February 2015, and placed in orbit 1.6 million km, at the point of Lagrange L1 (about 4 times farther than the Moon's orbit), provides views of the Earth as a whole - The journey has been a long one for the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). Once known as Triana, the satellite was conceived in 1998 to provide continuous views of Earth, to monitor the solar wind, and to measure fluctuations in Earth's albedo. The mission was put on hold in 2001, and the part-built satellite ended up in storage for several years with an uncertain future. In 2008, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA, and the U.S. Air Force decided to refurbish and update the spacecraft for launch - On February 11, 2015, DSCOVR was finally lofted into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. After journey of about 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) to the L1 Lagrange Point, the satellite and its Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) has returned its first view of the entire sunlit side of Earth. At L1-four times farther than the orbit of the Moon - the gravitational pull of the Sun and Earth cancel out, providing a stable orbit and a continuous view of Earth. The image above was made by combining information from Epic's red, green, and blue bands. (Bands are narrow regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to which a remote sensing instrument responds. When EPIC collects data, it takes a series of 10 images at different bands - from ultraviolet to near infrared.)
Eruption of Vesuvius from the Ponte della Maddalena (Eruzione del Vesuvio dal Ponte della Maddalena), by Pierre-Jacques Volaire, 1777, 18th century (oil on canvas)
Hubble ultra deep field - In the southern constellation of the furnace, the Hubble space telescope posed 270h to obtain this image of the distant universe. Approximately 10,000 galaxies distant from 5 to 13 billion light years are visible in this image. This view of nearly 10,000 galaxies is the deepest visible - light image of the cosmos. Called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, this galaxy - studded view represents a “” deep”” core sample of the universe, cutting across billions of light - years. The snapshot includes galaxies of various ages, sizes, shapes, and colors. The smallest, reddest galaxies, about 100, may be among the most distant known, existing when the universe was just 800 million years old. The nearest galaxies - the larger, brighter, well - defined spirals and ellipticals - thrived about 1 billion years ago, when the cosmos was 13 billion years old. In ground - based photographs, the patch of sky in which the galaxies reside (just one - tenth the diameter of the full Moon) is largely empty. Located in the constellation Fornax, the region is so empty that only a handful of stars within the Milky Way galaxy can be seen in the image. In this image, blue and green correspond to colors that can be seen by the human eye, such as hot, young, blue stars and the glow of Sun - like stars in the disks of galaxies. Red represents near - infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye, such as the red glow of dust - enshrouded galaxies. The image required 800 exposures taken over the course of 400 Hubble orbits around Earth. The total amount of exposure time was 11.3 days, taken between Sept. 24, 2003 and Jan. 16, 2004

Comparison between Earth and Mars - Earth and Mars compared - Comparison at the scale of Earth and Mars sizes. The diameter of the planet Mars is half the diameter of the Earth. Mars' diameter is half that of the Earth's It has ten percent the mass If you weigh 180 pounds on Earth, you would weigh only 68 pounds on Mars. Mars is half again further from the Sun than the Earth The vast deserts of North Africa are no match for the planet-wide desert that is Mars. While the Earth is host to oceans of liquid water and has a relatively dense water-rich atmosphere, Mars is exceedingly dry, cold, and so far as we know, sterile. It is believed that Mars lost most of its water to space a long time ago, and any water that remains is frozen at the poles and locked deep in the ground as permafrost. It is an interesting coincidence that the total surface area of Mars is about the same as the surface area of dry land on the Earth

Exoplanete near a star at the end of life - A dying star sheds its outer layers - An artist's view of a star that, like the Sun at the end of life, turns into a red giant, and expels its upper layers into concentric circles, before becoming a white dwarf. In the foreground, an exoplanet distant from its star that sees its surface reheat. When a star like our sun nears the end of its life, it expands to more than 50 times its original diameter, becoming a red giant. Then over the next several tens of thousands of years the star episodically ejects its outer layers into space, sometimes producing concentric shells. These ejected layers eventually form a planetary nebula. What will subsequently remain of the star is a small, extremely hot core which cools off to become a white dwarf. In this image a red giant star expels its first of many shells of gas into space. In the years to come this spherical shell will grow outward, its circumference eventually expanding far beyond the orbit of this planet. As for this planet, being so far from its parent sun for most of its life has kept it in a deep, dark freeze for the past ten billion years (think Pluto). It has been during only the past 100 million years, when its sun first blossomed into a red giant, that this planet has experienced such light and warmth. This effluence is short - lived, however; in about another million years darkness and cold will again be the norm for this world

Deforestation in Brazil - 2009 - Deforestation in Brazil - 2009 - View of deforestation in Rondonia, one of the Brazilian states where deforestation is the most intensive. In 1978, deforestation covered 4200 square km of the state, in 1988 about 30,000 square km and in 2003 about 67,000 square km. Image obtained by Terra satellite on 21 August 2009. The Amazon forest appears in green, the areas deforested in light colours. The state of Rondonia in western Brazil is one of the most deforested parts of the Amazon. In the past three decades, clearing and degradation of the state's original 208,000 square kilometers of forest (about 51.4 million acres, an area slightly smaller than the state of Kansas) has been rapid: 4,200 square kilometers cleared by 1978; 30,000 by 1988; and 53,300 by 1998. By 2003, an estimated 67,764 square kilometers of rainforest - - an area larger than the state of West Virginia - - had been cleared. Here is a satellite image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite taken on August 21, 2009. Intact forest is deep green, while cleared areas are tan (bare ground) or light green (crops, pasture, or occasionally, second - growth forest)

Enceladus, Saturn's satellite, seen by the Cassini probe - Saturn's moon Enceladus seen by Cassini spacecraft - Mosaic of false-coloured images obtained by the Cassini probe during the flight over this satellite on 5 October 2008. The image shows a fractured region in the southern hemisphere of the satellite. On Oct. 5, 2008, just after coming within 25 kilometers (15.6 miles) of the surface of Enceladus, Nasa's Cassini captured this stunning mosaic as the spacecraft sped away from this geologically active moon of Saturn. Craters and cratered terrains are rare in this view of the southern region of the moon's Saturn - facing hemisphere. Instead, the surface is replete with fractures, folds, and ridges - - all hallmarks of remarkable tectonic activity for a relatively small world. In this enhanced - color view, regions that appear blue - green are thought to be coated with larger grains than those that appear white or gray. Portions of the tiger stripe fractures, or sulci, are visible along the terminator at lower right, surrounded by a circumpolar belt of mountains. The icy moon's famed jets emanate from at least eight distinct source regions, which lie on or near the tiger stripes. However, in this view, the most prominent feature is Labtayt Sulci, the approximately one - kilometer (0.6 miles) deep northward - trending chasm located just above the center of the mosaic. Near the top, the conspicuous ridges are Ebony and Cufa Dorsae. This false - color mosaic was created from 28 images obtained at seven footprints, or pointing positions, by Cassini's narrow - angle camera. At each footprint, four images using filters sensitive to ultraviolet, visible and infrared light (spanning wavelengths from 338 to 930 nanometers) were combined to create the individual frames. The mosaic is an orthographic projection centered at 64.49 degrees south latitude, 283.87 west longitude, and it has an image scale of 196 kilometers (122.5 miles) per pixel. The original images ranged in resolution
Artist's view of the New Horizons probe near Pluto - New Horizons over Pluto and Charon - Artist's view of the New Horizons probe near Pluto and its largest satellite Charon. The New Horizons probe was launched on 19 January 2006 to Jupiter, then Pluto and Charon, which it will reach in 2015 and Kuiper's objects in 2020. Nasa's New Horizons unmanned spacecraft over dwarf planet Pluto and its moon Charon. New Horizons has been en route to Pluto since its launch from Earth in 2006 and is scheduled to make its closest approach on 14 July 2015. New Horizons is about the size and shape of a grand piano and weighed 1,054 pounds at launch. The high - gain dish antenna is about 7 feet in diameter and is employed for communication with the Earth. In this image the New Horizons spacecraft is about 10,000 miles from Pluto (upper right), 22,000 miles from its largest moon Charon (upper left) and 2.97 billion miles from the Earth. Dominating this side of the spacecraft with an 8 inch aperture is the Long - Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI), a digital camera with a large telephoto telescope fortified to operate in the cold, hostile environs of deep space. At 90 days before closest approach to Pluto, Lorri's images will surpass the quality of the best Hubble Space Telescope images of Pluto. While little is known about Pluto's appearance, here this Kuiper belt dwarf planet is realized as a frozen world covered with various ices, hosting a thin atmosphere of nitrogen, methane and other hydrocarbons too possibly, with a significantly weathered surface as Pluto's 248 - year orbit alternately brings it closer then further from the warmth of the sun
Mars: Noctis Labyrinthus - Mars: Noctis Labyrinthus - Perspective view of Noctis Labyrinthus, located in the western part of the great Martian canyon Valles Marineris. This heavily eroded canyon is here 5000 meters deep. Image obtained by the Mars Express probe on June 25, 2006. On 25 June 2006 the High - Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), onboard the ESA spacecraft Mars Express obtained image data with a ground resolution of approximately 16 meters per pixel. The data were acquired in the region of Noctis Labyrinthus at approximately 6.5* southern latitude and 260* eastern longitude. The region Noctis Labyrinthus, the Labyrinth of the Night”” is located directly on the western edge of Valles Marineris, the “Grand Canyon of Mars””. It is part of the complex graben system which is associated with the up - arching of Tharsis. Eye - catching is the high density of deeply incised, smaller, maze - like fractures. The scene exhibits parts of those graben structures which are incised up to 5000 meters. They are strongly eroded as can be seen at the bottom of the graben which exhibits detritus. Younger lithologies can be seen on the upper edge of the graben. The fractures are witnesses of so - called extensional tectonics. The intense volcanism in the Tharsis region was associated with an intense up - arching of large areas. This process resulted in tectonic stress, causing the crust to thin out and lead to graben formation.

Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR - Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR - Earth photo obtained by satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) on July 6, 2015. This satellite, launched on 11 February 2015, and placed in orbit 1.6 million km, at the point of Lagrange L1 (about 4 times farther than the orbit of the Moon), allows us to obtain views of the Earth as a whole. The journey has been a long one for the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). Once known as Triana, the satellite was conceived in 1998 to provide continuous views of Earth, to monitor the solar wind, and to measure fluctuations in Earth's albedo. The mission was put on hold in 2001, and the partly - built satellite ended up in storage for several years with an uncertain future. In 2008, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA, and the U.S. Air Force decided to refurbish and update the spacecraft for launch
The hidden face of the Moon and the Earth seen from DSCOVR. 07/2015 - Far side of the Moon with Earth seen from DSCOVR. 07/2015 - This image obtained on July 16, 2015 by the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite shows the passage of the Moon and its face hidden from the Earth. The distance between DSCOVR and Earth is about 1.5 million kilometres. The Moon was approximately 400,000 kilometres from Earth, so it was closer to DSCOVR and therefore appears larger than it is in relation to Earth. This image shows the far side of the moon, illuminated by the sun, as it crosses between the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) camera and telescope, and the Earth - one million miles away. Total solar eclipse of 9 March 2016 - Shadow of the Moon: Photos of the shadow of the Moon on Earth taken by the satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) - A total solar eclipse starting on March 9 00:15 UTC and ending on March 9 03:38 UTC was visible only from the South Pacific. The DSCOVR EPIC camera was following the shadow cast by the moon on Earth during this time from its vantage point at the Sun-Earth first Lagrange point. Note that the total eclipse is limited to the center black area of the shadow. The outer regions experienced a partial eclipse with a portion of the sun's disk always visible.

Field of distant galaxies - Distant galaxies - Image of distant galaxies obtained by the Hubble space telescope in the furnace constellation. 7500 galaxies, some of which are more than 13 billion years old - light are visible on this image. Some closer galaxies also appear. This image covers a field equivalent to one third of a full moon. This image, taken by Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope, was made from mosaics taken in September and October 2009 with the newly installed Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and in 2004 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). The view covers a portion of the southern field of a large galaxy census called the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), a deep - sky study by several observatories to trace the formation and evolution of galaxies. The final image combines a broad range of colors, from the ultraviolet, through visible light, and into the near - infrared. The image reveals galaxy shapes that appear increasingly chaotic at each earlier epoch, as galaxies grew through accretion, collisions, and mergers. The galaxies range from the mature spirals and ellipticals in the foreground, to smaller, fainter, irregularly shaped galaxies, most of which are farther away, and therefore existed farther back in time. These smaller galaxies are considered the building blocks of the larger galaxies we see today. Astronomers are using this multi - color panorama to trace many details of galaxy assembly over cosmic time, including the star - formation rate in galaxies, the rate of mergers among galaxies, and the abundance of weak active galactic nuclei. The image shows a rich tapestry of 7,500 galaxies stretching back through most of the university's history. The closest galaxies seen in the foreground emitted their observed light about a billion years ago. The farthest galaxies, a few of the very faint red specks, are seen as they appeared more than 13 billion years ago, or roughly 650 million years ago,
