Freemasonry: “” Hexagram, Solomon's seal, 6-branched star, David's shield, double triangle, Saturn's talisman, symbol of the cabbal (Kabbalah) used by Freemasonry”” (Freemasonry: The Great seal of Solomon: This symbol is used to teach the two principles of the divinity to new members of free-free masonry - It shows the two old men of the Kaballah; the God of Light and the God of Reflection, the merciful and the cruel, the White Jehovah and the Black Jehovah (star or shield of David) Engraving of the 19th century Private collection
Colliding neutron stars and gravitational waves - Colliding neutron stars and gravitational waves: Artist's view of two colliding neutron stars about to merge and explode in kilonova. This type of event produces gravitational waves and a gamma ray burst. This artist's impression shows two tiny but very dense neutron stars at the point at which they merge and explode as a kilonova. Such a very rare event is expected to produce both gravitational waves and a short gamma-ray burst, both of which were observed on 17 August 2017 by LIGO-Virgo and Fermi/INTEGRAL respectively. Subsequent detailed observations with many ESO telescopes confirmed that this object, seen in the galaxy NGC 4993 about 130 million light-years from the Earth, is indeed a kilonova. Such objects are the main source of very heavy chemical elements, such as gold and platinum, in the Universe

Gravitational Waves - Gravitational Waves: Two colliding neutron stars create a gravitational wave that spreads over the space-time fabric. Artist's impression of two neutron stars - the compact remnants of what were once massive stars - spiralling towards each other just before merging. The collision of these dense, compact objects produced gravitational waves - fluctuations in the fabric of spacetime - that were detected by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration on 17 August 2017.
Double star 61 Cygni - Binary star 61 Cygni - 61 Cygni is a binary system of two stars comparable to the Sun. Located 11.4 years - light from the Earth, 61 Cygni is the first star (after the Sun) whose distance was measured thanks to its parallax. Image obtained by the Oschin telescope of Mount Palomar through several filters and composed. 61 Cygni is a binary star system in the Constellation Cygnus at approximately 11.4 light - years distance from Earth. Composite image obtained by the Oschin telescope refractor at the Palomar Observatory, USA

Star Sirius in the Great Dog - Sirius in Canis Major - Sirius is the main star in the constellation Big Dog. Seen from the Earth, Sirius is the brightest star in the sky after the Sun. Sirius, the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the night sky at mag - 1.44 and it dominates the constellation of Canis Major. Sirius is a binary star with a white dwarf companion named Sirius B, “” The Pup”. It is an eight - magnitude star that is separated from Sirius by only a couple of arc seconds making it difficult to observe in a telescope because of the primary's great brilliance

Galactic Center Region - The Galactic Center - The Galactic Center Region of the center of our galaxy seen the Chandra, Spitzer and Hubble satellites. The galactic center (Sagittarius A*) is located in the white area in the middle to the right of the image. In yellow, near-infrared images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope; in red, infrared images obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope; in blue and purple, X-ray observations obtained by the Chandra Space Telescope. Nasa's Great Observatories - the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory - have collaborated to produce an unprecedented image of the central region of our Milky Way galaxy. In this spectacular image, observations using infrared light and X-ray light see through the obscuring dust and reveal the intense activity near the galactic core. Note that the center of the galaxy is located within the bright white region to the right of and just below the middle of the image. The entire image width covers about one-half a degree, about the same angular width as the full moon. Each telescope's contribution is presented in a different color: - Yellow represents the near-infrared observations of Hubble. These observations outline the energetic regions where stars are being born as well as reveal hundreds of thousands of stars. - Red represents the infrared observations of Spitzer. The radiation and winds from stars create glowing dust clouds that exhibit complex structures from compact, spherical globules to long, stringy filaments. - Blue and violet represent the X-ray observations of Chandra. X-rays are emitted by gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions and by outflows from the supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center. The bright blue blob on the left side is emission from a double star system containing either a neutron star or a black hole. When these views are brought together, this composite image provides one of the most detailed

This exoplanet is orbiting in the habitable area of the Starsystem Kepler-16 (AB), an Algol-type binary star located at a distance of about 200 light years from the Sun in the constellation of Swan. An astronaut could contemplate a double sunset. Like Luke Skywalker's planet “” Tatooine””” in Star Wars, Kepler-16b orbits a pair of stars. Described here as a terrestrial planet, Kepler-16b might also be a gas giant like Saturn. Prospects for life on this unusual world aren't good, as it has a temperature similar to that of dry ice. But the discovery indicates that the movie's iconic double-sunset is anything but science fiction.

Contact Binary Star VFTS 352 - Illustration - Binary Contact Star VFTS 352: VFTS 352 is a contact binary star composed of two O stars located in the Nebula of the Tarantula in the Great Magellan Cloud 160,000 light years from Earth. It's the most massive contact binary ever seen. It is composed of two stars orbiting each other in just over a day, the stars being so close that their surfaces touch each other. This artist's impression shows VFTS 352, the hottest and most massive double star system to date where the two components are in contact and sharing material. The two stars in this extreme system lie about 160,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This intriguing system could be heading for a dramatic end, either with the formation of a single giant star or as a future binary black hole

Planetary nebula NGC 6543 in the Dragon/HST - This NASA Hubble Space Telescope image shows one of the most complex planetary nebulae ever seen, NGC 6543, nicknamed the “Cat's Eye Nebula.””” Hubble reveals surprisingly intricate structures including concentric gas shells, jets of high - speed gas and unusual shock - induced knots of gas. Estimated to be 1,000 years old, the nebula is a visual “” fossil record”” of the dynamics and late evolution of a dying star. A preliminary interpretation suggests that the star might be a double - star system. The dynamical effects of two stars orbiting one another most easily explains the intricate structures, which are much more complicated than features seen in most planetary nebulae. (The two stars are too close together to be individually resolved by Hubble, and instead, appear as a single point of light at the center of the nebula.) According to this model, a fast “” stellar wind””” of gas blown off the central star created the elongated shell of dense, glowing gas. This structure is embedded inside two larger lobes of gas blown off the star at an earlier phase. These lobes are “” pinched”” by a ring of denser gas, presumably ejected along the orbital plane of the binary companion. The suspected companion star also might be responsible for a pair of high - speed jets of gas that lie at right angles to this equatorial ring. If the companion were pulling in material from a neighboring star, jets escaping along the company's rotation axis could be produced. These jets would explain several puzzling features along the periphery of the gas lobes. Like a stream of water hitting a sand pile, the jets compress gas ahead of them, creating the “” curlicue”” features and bright arcs near the outer edge of the lobes. The twin jets are now pointing in different directions than these features. This suggests the jets are wobbling, or precessing, and turning on and off episodically. Nova de l'Eagle - Nova Aquilae. Artwork - Artist's view of a nova, a white dwarf star that attracts the material of a companion star at the end of life, a red giant, and compresses these gases and then unleash a nuclear fusion reaction releasing a huge amount of energy in the form of a brief, extremely bright light. Here the artist showed the binary system just before the explosion of the nova. The artist's illustration depicts a classical nova binary system just before an explosion on the surface of the white dwarf. Classical novas occur in a system where a white dwarf closely orbits a normal, companion star. In this illustration, gas is flowing from the large red, companion star into a disk and then onto the white dwarf that is hidden inside the white area. As the gas flows ever closer to the white dwarf, it gets increasingly hotter, as indicated by the change in colors from yellow to white. When the explosion occurs, it engulfs the disk of gas and the red companion star

Alpha Centauri - Alpha Centauri - Alpha Centauri is a double star (Alpha Centauri A and B) near the Sun, 4.36 years - light. These two stars are relatively similar to the Sun. Alpha Centauri is a binary star (Alpha Centauri A and B) located at a distance of 4.36 light - years, or 41 million km, in the direction of the southern constellation Centaurus (The Centaur). Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, are rather similar to the Sun; their stellar spectral types are “” G2V”” and “” K1V””, respectively. Alpha Centauri A and B orbit each other at a distance of about 3600 million km, or somewhat more than the distance of planet Uranus from the Sun. The orbital period is almost exactly 80 years
Binary pulsar and gravitational waves - Artist's impression of the pulsar PSR J0348+0432 and its white dwarf companion - Artist's view of a gravitational wave generated by a system of a neutron star associated with a white dwarf, spreading on the fabric of space - time. This artist's impression shows the exotic double object that consists of a tiny, but very heavy neutron star that spins 25 times each second, orbited every two and a half hours by a white dwarf star. The neutron star is a pulsar named PSR J0348+0432 that is giving off radio waves that can be picked up on Earth by radio telescopes. Although this unusual pair is very interesting in its own right, it is also a unique laboratory for testing the limits of physical theories. This system is radiating gravitational radiation, ripples in spacetime. Although these waves (shown as the grid in this picture) cannot be yet detected directly by astronomers on Earth they can be sensed indirectly by measuring the change in the orbit of the system as it loses energy. As the pulsar is so small the relative sizes of the two objects are not drawn to scale

August 24, 2016: The three stars that make up the Centaur Alpha system are the closest stars to the Sun. Proxima du Centaur is located at a distance of 4.22 light years from the Sun but is invisible to the naked eye. Alpha Centauri A and B are a little further away, 4.36 light years from the Sun. These two stars are relatively similar to the Sun. Although Proxima of Centauri is distant from the Alpha couple of Centauri, its movement seems to link it to this system and is sometimes called Alpha Centauri C - This image of the sky around the bright star Alpha Centauri AB also shows the much fainter red dwarf star, Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Solar System. The picture was created from pictures forming part of the Digitized Sky Survey 2. The blue halo around Alpha Centauri AB is an artifact of the photographic process, the star is really pale yellow in colour like the Sun
Constellation of Big Bear - Constellation of Ursa Major - The constellation of Big Bear with the constellations of Hunting Dogs and Little Lion. Ursa Major is the third largest constellation in the sky but is not seen by skywatchers in the far southern hemisphere. However, it is the most recognisable of all constellations for those who can see it, mainly because of the asterism formed by the seven brightest stars. This is known as the Big Dipper in the USA, the Plough in Britain, various kinds of carts in Europe and a range of other objects in other cultures. Not surprisingly the constellation as a whole has a rich mythology associated with it, with many peoples projecting their stories among these beautiful stars. Greatly abbreviated, one ancient Greek version has Zeus romancing Callisto. His wife Hera changed Callisto into a bear out of jealousy. Hera's son Arcus found Callisto (the bear) by chance in the forest and was about to kill her, so to save her, Zeus turned Arcus into a smaller bear (Ursa Minor), and threw the pair of them into the sky, causing their tails to be stretched. Both bears are circumpolar (visible throught the year) from latitudes north of about 10 degrees and Ursa Major is seen high above the pole star in the northern winter and below it (as in the photograph) in the summer. The two brightest stars in the constellation are Dubhe and Merak (a and ss Ursa Majoris), also known as the Pointers because a line drawn through them points to Polaris, the North Star. The main objects of amateur astronomical interest in Ursa Major are galaxies, five of which have Messier numbers

The brighter stars (Alpha Centauri A and B) are strongly overexposed, with the outlying member, Proxima lying approx. 2.2* to the south - west (arrow). Smaller areas around the stars are shown in the inserts to the right. The photo has been reproduced from a blue - sensitive photographic plate obtained by the ESO 1 - m Schmidt Telescope, a wide - angle telescope at the La Silla observatory in Chile that has now been decommissioned. The Alpha Centauri triple stellar system is our closest neighbour in space. It is located at a distance of 4.36 light - years, or 41 million km, in the direction of the southern constellation Centaurus (The Centaur). The two main stars in the system, Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, are rather similar to the Sun; their stellar spectral types are “” G2V”” and “” K1V””, respectively. The third star is a “” red dwarf”” known as Proxima. It is much cooler and smaller than the other two. Alpha Centauri A and B orbit each other at a distance of about 3600 million km, or somewhat more than the distance of planet Uranus from the Sun. The orbital period is almost exactly 80 years. Colliding neutron stars and gravitational waves - Colliding neutron stars and gravitational waves: Artist's view of a gravitational wave generated by a system of two neutron stars in collision, spreading over the space-time fabric. A couple of seconds after that, ESA's Integral and Nasa's Fermi satellites detected a burst of gamma rays, the luminous counterpart to the gravitational waves emitted by the cosmic clash. This is the first discovery of gravitational waves and light coming from the same source
The cluster of stars Pismis 24 in the Scorpio - Pismis 24 star cluster in Scorpius - This image obtained by the Hubble space telescope shows the cluster of young stars Pismis 24, located about 8000 years - light in the nebula NGC 6357 of the Scorpio. This cluster houses a star that was thought to be the most massive star in our galaxy, between 200 and 300 solar masses (the brightest star in the top center of the image). The measurements obtained by the Hubble telescope showed that this star, Pismis 24 - 1, was actually a double star and that its mass was actually only about 100 solar masses. The small open star cluster Pismis 24 lies in the core of the large emission nebula NGC 6357 in Scorpius, about 8,000 light - years away from Earth. Some of the stars in this cluster are extremely massive and emit intense ultraviolet radiation. The brightest object in the picture is designated Pismis 24 - 1. It was once thought to weigh as much as 200 to 300 solar masses. This would not only have made it by far the most massive known star in the galaxy, but would have put it considerably above the currently believed upper mass limit of about 150 solar masses for individual stars. Hubble space telescope images of the star show that it is really two stars orbiting one another (inset pictures at top right and bottom right). They are estimated to each be 100 solar masses
Double star Gliese 623 - Double star system Gliese 623 in Hercules - Gliese 623 is a double star located about 25 years ago - light in the constellation Hercules. The Hubble space telescope was able for the first time to obtain an image of the two stars that make up this system, in June 1994. The two stars are separated by about twice the distance from Earth to Sun. On the right, 623b, a star 60,000 times less bright than the Sun, and 10 times less massive. Its nature is misidentified, it's a red dwarf or a brown dwarf. A dim double star system cataloged as Gliese 623 lies 25 light - years from Earth, in the constellation of Hercules. The individual stars of this binary system were distinguished for the first time when the Hubble Space Telescope's Faint Object Camera recorded this image in June 1994. They are separated by 200 million miles - about twice the Earth/Sun distance. On the right, the fainter Gliese 623b is 60,000 times less luminous than the Sun and approximately 10 times less massive. The fuzzy rings around its brighter companion, Gliese 623a, are image artifacts. The lowest mass stars are classified as red dwarf stars, but even red dwarfs are massive enough to trigger hydrogen fusion in their cores to sustain their feeble starlight. Slightly less massive objects, known as brown dwarfs, can shine only briefly as their central temperatures are too low to utilize hydrogen as nuclear fuel. The present estimates of the mass of Gliese 623b are right at this red dwarf/brown dwarf border but future observations should help clarify the nature of one of our Galaxy's small stars. Dim and difficult to detect, an abundance of objects like GL623b has been proposed as a possible solution to the mystery of “” Dark Matter”” in the Universe

The measurements obtained by the Hubble telescope showed that this star, Pismis 24 - 1, was actually a double star and that its mass was actually only about 100 solar masses. High - resolution observations from Hubble have shed light on the real mass of a star previously believed to be among the heaviest known in our Milky Way. Originally, the mass of the star was thought to be an incredible 200 - 300 solar masses, but turned out to be only 100 solar masses

Satellite COROT and double star - Illustration - Artist's view of COROT watching a binary star - Artist's view of the satellite COROT in space. Launched at the end of December 2006, this satellite studies the physical phenomena occurring inside the stars. It is also used for the detection of extrasolar planets by observing the periodic micro-eclipses that these planets cause by passing in front of their mother star. Artist's view of COROT, the exoplanet hunter mission led by CNES, with ESA participation. Launched in December 2006, COROT is placed on a circular, polar orbit around Earth that allow for continuous observations of two large and opposite regions in the sky for more than 150 days each. Within each region there are many selected fields that will be monitored in turn. The reason for the oppositely sited regions is that, because of the Earth's movement around the Sun, the sun's rays start to interfere with the observations after 150 days. COROT then rotates by 180 degrees and start observing the other region

Cassiopee Constellation - The constellation of Cassiopeia - Cassiopeia, was seen in mythology as the seated Queen of Ethiopia (not to be confused with the modern AEthiopia). She was the wife of Cepheus and the mother of Andromeda, beautiful but boastful. The grouping of moderately bright stars has a distinctive 'W' shape and lies in a rather faint part of the northern Milky Way. It is circumpolar for latitudes north of 50*. Occupying almost 500 square degrees of sky it is the 25th largest of the 88 modern constellations
