Mimas, satellite of Saturn, seen by the Cassini probe on 13/02/2010 - Saturn's moon Mimas seen by Cassini spacecraft - February 13 2010 - The Mimas satellite seen in false colours by the Cassini probe on 13 February 2010 has a distance of 16,000 km from the satellite. Color differences reveal differences in terrain nature. Mimas is about 400 km in diameter. At the right centre is the large impact crater Herschel, 130 km wide. Subtle color differences on Saturn's moon Mimas are apparent in this false - color view of Herschel Crater captured by Nasa's Cassini spacecraft during its closest - ever flyby of that moon. The image shows terrain - dependent color variations, particularly the contrast between the bluish materials in and around Herschel Crater (130 kilometers, or 80 miles, wide) and the greenish cast on older, more heavily cratered terrain elsewhere. The origin of the color differences is not yet understood, but may be caused by subtle differences in the surface composition between the two terrains. Herschel Crater covers most of the bottom of this image. To create this false - color view, ultraviolet, green and infrared images were combined into a single picture that exaggerates the color differences of terrain on the moon. These data were combined with a high - resolution image taken in visible light to provide the high - resolution information from the clear - filter image and the color information from the ultraviolet, green and infrared filter images. The natural color of Mimas visible to the human eye may be a uniform gray or yellow color, but this mosaic has been contrast - enhanced and shows differences at other wavelengths of light. During its closest - ever flyby on Feb. 13, 2010, Cassini came within about 9,500 kilometers (5,900 miles) of Mimas. This view looks toward the northern part of the hemisphere of Mimas that leads in the moon's orbit around Saturn. Mimas is 396 kilometers (246 miles) across. North on Mimas is up

Nebula NGC 6188 in the Altar - NGC 6188 nebula in Ara - Nebula NGC 6188 is located about 4000 years from Earth. It is home to a cluster of young stars NGC 6193, formed three million years ago. Lower left, nebula NGC 6164. Image obtained through 3 different filters that highlight oxygen (blue), hydrogen (green), and sulfur (red). NGC 6188 is a red emission nebula located in southern constellation of Ara, about 4000 light years away. Inside of it, a young 3 million year star cluster. NGC 6193. The hottest stars of the cluster, two closely spaced O - type giants HD 150135 and HD 150136, (the bright stars in the image) are the illumination source of the emission nebula. Bottom left is the nebula NGC 6164. This image is in the classic “” Hubble palette”” where SII is assigned to red, H - alpha to green, and OIII to blue. RGB frames were taken for star colors
Leda Planitia is a plain located in the northern hemisphere of Venus. On this radar image obtained by the Magellan probe in 1991 appear in clear clear old terrain, fractures. The 40 km diameter Heloise impact crater is visible at the bottom of the picture - This false color Magellan image shows a portion of Leda Planitia (plains) in the northern hemisphere of Venus, centered at 41 degrees north latitude, 52 degrees east longitude. The area is 220 kilometers (135 miles) wide and 275 kilometers (170 miles) long. This image was produced from Magellan radar data collected in Cycle 2 of the mission. Cycle 2 was completed January 15, 1992. This image contains examples of several of the major geologic terrains on Venus and illustrates the basic stratigraphy or sequence of geologic events. The oldest terrains appear as bright, high-fractured or chaotic highlands rising out of the plains. This is seen in the upper left, or northwest, quadrant of the image. The chaotic highlands, sometimes called tessera, may represent older and thicker crustal material and occupy about 15 percent of the surface of Venus. The circular ring structure in the lower left of the image is probably an impact crater. This 40 kilometer (25 miles) diameter crater has been given a proposed name, Heloise, after the French physician who lived from about 1098 to 1164 A.D. The crater was formed by the impact of an asteroid sometime before the plains lavas embayed and covered the region. The plains surround and embay the fractured highland tessera. Plains are formed by fluid volcanic flows that may have once formed vast lava seas which covered all the low lying surfaces. Plains comprise more than 80 percent of the surface of Venus. The most recent activity in the region is volcanism that produced the radar bright flows best seen in the upper right quadrant of the image. Those flows are similar to the darker plains volcanics, but apparently have more rugged surfaces that more efficiently scatter t

Japet, satellite of Saturn, seen by Cassini - Saturn's moon Iapetus seen by Cassini spacecraft. - Mosaic in false colors of Japet, a satellite of 1436 kilometers in diameter, taken by the Cassini probe on 10 September 2007 has a distance of 73,000 km from the satellite. The image shows the bright side of the satellite; a large 450 km wide impact basin is visible towards the bottom of the image. This false - color mosaic shows the entire hemisphere of Iapetus (1,468 kilometers, or 912 miles across) visible from Cassini on Sept. 10 2007 at a distance of about 73,000 kilometers (45,000 miles) from Iapetus. Near the top of the mosaic, numerous impact features are visible, including the craters Ogier and Charlemagne. The most prominent topographic feature in this view, in the bottom half of the mosaic, is a 450 - kilometer (280 - mile) wide impact basin
Sundial of the Lycee Louis le Grand in Paris - Sundial. Louis le Grand School - Dials of the Lycee Louis le Grand, in Paris. The sundial at the top shows the hours of average time and clocks. The 8 curves represent the changes in average time relative to solar weather. (The curve in 8 was discovered by Fouchy in 1730). The trace of the curves, especially to the left, is sometimes false. The bottom of the curves should be exposed to the line of the summer solstices (dotted line at the bottom of the dial on the right). Numbers correspond to local standard times. The sundial at the bottom indicates the hours of sideral time. This dial was designed for pedagogic purposes to show how to calculate the position of stars. The principle of reading is to recite the siderale hour for a classic hour, given by the shadow of the sun, and to reduce the siderale time for any other hour taking into account the difference in scale between the two times: 24 hours classic is worth 23 h 56 min 04 s of sideral time. Add 15296 (1) f.61r, The exiles have reached the Tamasa river and pass the night on its banks, still surrounded by the grieving townspeople. Sita and Rama lie sleeping on a bed of grass, while Laksmana and Sumantra talk of Rama's virtues, and the horses graze. All around lie the sleeping townspeople who have followed them in their grief. On waking up, Rama instructs the charioteer to lay a false trail, as if the chariot had turned back towards Ayodhya instead of proceeding towardSitae forest. When the chariot returns, he gets into it along with Sita and Laksmana and they proceed towards the forest, leaving the townspeople behind. Grief-stricken to have lost Rama, they return to their homes in the city. At the bottom, the four drive off along the bank of the river Tamasa.

Arabian desert seen by satellite 01/2016 - Eastern Desert - Egypt: Part of the Arabian desert in Egypt seen by Sentinel-2A satellite on 17 January 2016. The vegetation appears in red near the Nile. The Sentinel-2A satellite takes us over central-eastern Egypt with this image from 17 January. The image is dominated by arid desert - namely the Eastern Desert between the Nile River the Red Sea. The distinctive pattern of water erosion from rivers and streams is clearly visible as they make their way towards the Nile, at which point the rolling sandy highlands drop abruptly at the Nile valley, visible along the bottom of the image. Fields of intensive farming along the Nile appear red owing to this false-colour image being processed to include the near-infrared. The varying shades of red indicate how sensitive the multispectral instrument on Sentinel-2 is to differences in chlorophyll content, providing key information on plant health. Zooming in along the bottom we can see clusters of black dots where cities and towns are located, in addition to the fields. In the lower right, just above the red area, there is an interesting pattern of roads from our bird 's-eye view - possibly a developing residential area
Africa by satellite. Volcano Virunga - Zaire - 01/07/1993 This is a false - color radar image of Central Africa, showing the Virunga Volcano chain along the borders of Rwanda, Zaire and Uganda. This area is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. This C - and L - band image was acquired on April 12, 1994, on orbit 58 of space shuttle Endeavour by the Spaceborne Imaging Radar - C/X - band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR - C/X - SAR). The area is centered at about 1.75 degrees south latitude and 29.5 degrees east longitude. The image covers an area 58 kilometers by 178 kilometers (48 miles by 178 miles). The false - color composite is created by displaying the L - band HH return in red, the L - band HV return in green and the C - band HH return in blue. The dark area in the bottom of the image is Lake Kivu, which forms the border between Zaire (to the left) and Rwanda (to the right). The airport at Goma, Zaire is shown as a dark line just above the lake in the bottom left corner of the image. Volcanic flows from the 1977 eruption of Mt. Nyiragongo are shown just north of the airport. Mt. Nyiragongo is not visible in this image because it is located just to the left of the image swath. Very fluid lava flows from the 1977 eruption killed 70 people. Mt. Nyiragongo is currently erupting (August 1994) and will be a target of observation during the second flight of SIR - C/X - SAR. The large volcano in the center of the image is Mt. Karisimbi (4,500 meters or 14,800 feet). This radar image highlights subtle differences in the vegetation and volcanic flows of the region. The faint lines shown in the purple regions are believed to be the result of agriculture terracing by the people who live in the region. The vegetation types are an important factor in the habitat of the endangered mountain gorillas. Researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in London will use this data to produce vegetation maps of the area to aid in their study of t

Enceladus, Saturn's satellite, seen by Cassini - Saturn's moon Enceladus from Cassini - Mosaic of false-coloured images obtained by the Cassini probe during the flight over this satellite on 11 August 2008. The image shows a fractured region in the southern hemisphere of the satellite. This mosaic of Saturn's moon Enceladus provides broad regional context for the ultra - sharp, close - up views Nasa's Cassini spacecraft acquired minutes earlier, during its flyby on Aug. 11, 2008. This false - color mosaic combines Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) narrow - angle camera images obtained through ultraviolet, green, and near - infrared camera filters. Areas that are greenish in appearance are believed to represent deposits of coarser grained ice and solid boulders that are too small to be seen at this scale, but which are visible in the higher resolution views, while whitish deposits represent finer grained ice. The mosaic shows that coarse - grained and solid ice are concentrated along valley floors and walls, as well as along the upraised flanks of the “” tiger stripe”” fractures, which may be covered with plume fallout that landed not far from the sources. Elsewhere on Enceladus, this coarse water ice is concentrated within outcrops along cliff faces and at the top of ridges. The sinuous boundary of scarps and ridges that encircles the south polar terrain at about 55 degrees south latitude is conspicuous. Much of the coarse - grained or solid ice along this boundary may be blocky rubble that has crumbled off of cliff faces as a result of ongoing seismic activity. The lighting conditions over the polar region highlight features, such as fractures and ridges, that are barely visible in the July 2005 views, and vice versa. The four most prominent sulci (from top to bottom: Damascus, Baghdad, Alexandria and Cairo) appear as generally horizontal fractures near lower right, and they extend into the moon's night side. The mosaic is an orthographic projection centered at 63.0 degrees south

Scotland view by satellite - United Kingdom seen from space: United Kingdom seen by satellite Sentinel-3A on 9 May 2016 - The recently launched Sentinel-3A satellite takes us over the United Kingdom, in this false-colour image acquired on 9 May 2016 - Made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the UK is an island nation in northwestern Europe - At the top centre of the image, we can see aircraft contrails - water vapour condenses around the small particles in the aircraft exhaust to form ice crystals - The result is the formation of an elongated cloud-like condensation trail in the sky, unmistakable in the centre of the image - At top right, some snow cover in southern Norway is still evident. At bottom right, part of the Netherlands with the unmistakable 700 sq km Lake Markermeer is clearly visible - In the southern North Sea/English Channel, an algal bloom is distinguishable in shades of light blue and green. Meanwhile, closer to the coast we can see brown sediments where rivers and streams run into the sea - The Scottish Highlands at the tip of the United Kingdom appear light brown, representing bare soil and rock formations, with some vegetation. The rest of the island, as well as the visible part of Ireland, are very green, representing dense vegetation
Apr. 04, 1954 - Russian Murder Squad Give Them Up. Three Men With Poisoned Bullets: A Russian secret police agent and two East German secret police have surrendered to the Americans. They say they were sen; from Moscow to West Germany to murder an anti-communist Russian. They were armed with special guns, disguised as cigarette cases, which fired poisoned bullets. The Russian is Captain Nikdai Khoklov, aged 31, of the MVD, the Soviet secret police. He appeared at a crowded Press conference called by the U.S. High Commissioner, Mr. James B. Conant, in Bonn. A U.S. official, Mr. J. MacDermott, said Khoklov's story had been subjected to world-side investigation by U.S. security officers. Not until they were satisfied on all points was it decided to make the story public. Khoklov told not only of the assassination plot but details of the workings of Russian's secret police and also details of the murder of Leon Trotsky in Mexico City. The two East Germans were named as Hans Koruwicz and Kurt Weber. They are in protective custody. Their intended victim was a Russian named Georgio Okolovich, a member of the anti-communist NTS executive committee in Frankfurt. The murder guns the three carried were disguised as cigarette cases. They had special silencers and electrically fired. The lead bullets held deadly poison. When the case, which is covered in leather in opened it shows the end of 23 cigarettes. Under a false bottom is the firing appartus and a 1.5 volt battery
Planet around the star Fomalhaut - Planet orbiting star Fomalhaut - First visible light photo of an extrasolar planet obtained by the space telescope Hubble. The planet called Fomalhaut b, is a planet with a mass close to Jupiter, orbiting the star Fomalhaut, 25 years - light from Earth in the constellation of Southern Fish. The star Fomalhaut (indicated by a white dot) is hidden here to show the dust disc surrounding it and the position of the planet. Located at a distance of about four times that separating Neptune from the Sun, Fomalhaut b makes a complete orbit around its star in 872 years. November 2008 - This image, taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, shows the newly discovered planet, Fomalhaut b, orbiting its parent star, Fomalhaut. The small white box at lower right pinpoints the planet's location. Fomalhaut b has carved a path along the inner edge of a vast, dusty debris ring encircling Fomalhaut that is 34.5 billion kilometers across. Fomalhaut b lies three billion kilometers inside the ring's inner edge and orbits 17 billion kilometers from its star. The inset at bottom right is a composite image showing the planet's position during Hubble observations taken in 2004 and 2006. Astronomers have calculated that Fomalhaut b completes an orbit around its parent star every 872 years. The white dot in the centre of the image marks the star's location. The region around Fomalhaut's location is black because astronomers used the Advanced Camera's coronagraph to block out the star's bright glare so that the dim planet could be seen. Fomalhaut b is 100 million times fainter than its star. The radial streaks are scattered starlight. The red dot at lower left is a background star. The Fomalhaut system is 25 light - years away in the constellation Piscis Austrinus. This false - colour image was taken in October 2004 and July 2006

Nebula Trifide (M20) in Sagittarius view in visible and infrared - This image composite compares the well - known visible - light picture of the glowing Trifid Nebula (left panel) with infrared views from Nasa's Spitzer Space Telescope (remaining three panels). The Trifid Nebula is a giant star - forming cloud of gas and dust located 5,400 light - years away in the constellation Sagittarius. The false - color Spitzer images reveal a different side of the Trifid Nebula. Where dark lanes of dust are visible trisecting the nebula in the visible - light picture, bright regions of star - forming activity are seen in the Spitzer pictures. All together, Spitzer uncovered 30 massive embryonic stars and 120 smaller newborn stars throughout the Trifid Nebula, in both its dark lanes and luminous clouds. These stars are visible in all the Spitzer images, mainly as yellow or red spots. Embryonic stars are developing stars about to burst into existence. Ten of the 30 massive embryos discovered by Spitzer were found in four dark cores, or stellar “” incubators,””” where stars are born. Astronomers using data from the Institute of Radioastronomy millimeter telescope in Spain had previously identified these cores but thought they were not quite ripe for stars. Spitzer's highly sensitive infrared eyes were able to penetrate all four cores to reveal rapidly growing embryos. Astronomers can actually count the individual embryos tucked inside the cores by looking closely at the Spitzer image taken by its infrared array camera (top right). This instrument has the highest spatial resolution of Spitzer's imaging cameras. The Spitzer image from the multiband imaging photometer (bottom right), on the other hand, specializes in detecting cooler materials. Its view highlights the relatively cool core material falling onto the Trifidi's growing embryos. The middle panel is a combination of Spitzer data from both of these instruments. The embryos are thought to have been triggered by a massiv
