Spiral Galaxy M100 in Berenice's Hair - Spiral galaxy M100 in Coma Berenices - The spiral galaxy M100 is located about 60 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the Virgin's galaxy cluster. Several dwarf elliptic galaxies are visible in this image, one just above M100 probably interacting. This image was obtained by Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. In this deep image fainter galaxies appear. One seems to be involved with the faint outskirts of the large spiral. The somewhat distorted shape of the dwarf galaxy suggests it could be both influencing and being influenced by M100, and may be the cause of the asymmetry in the spiral arms. Nearby is an even fainter, elongated dwarf galaxy and elsewhere in the picture are several others, all probably members of the Virgo cluster, which spills over into the adjoining constellation of Coma Berenices
Black hole collision in NGC 6240 - Black holes colliding in NGC 6240 - The galaxy NGC 6240, is located about 400 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Ophiuchus. This system consists of two colliding galaxies each with a central black hole; in several millions of years, they will form only one galaxy. A composite X-ray image (red, orange and yellow) and visible from the space telescopes Chandra and Hubble. This image of NGC 6240 contains X - ray data from Chandra (shown in red, orange, and yellow) that has been combined with an optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope. In 2002, the discovery of two merging black holes was announced based on Chandra data in this galaxy. The two black holes are a mere 3,000 light years apart and are seen as the bright point - like sources in the middle of the image. Scientists think these black holes are in such close proximity because they are in the midst of spiraling toward each other - a process that began about 30 million years ago. It is estimated that the two black holes will eventually drift together and merge into a larger black hole some tens or hundreds of millions of years from now. NGC 6240 is a peculiar, butterfly - or lobster - shaped galaxy consisting of two smaller merging galaxies. It lies in the constellation of Ophiuchus, the Serpent Holder, some 400 million light - years away
Spiral galaxy M81 in the Great Bear - Spiral galaxy M81 in Ursa Major - The spiral galaxy M81 is located 12 million years ago - light from Earth. Its arms are home to star-forming regions while its core is surrounded by much older yellow stars. In the background at the top, an irregular dwarf galaxy, Holmberg IX. This image obtained by a 50 cm amateur telescope, in February 2010 for 23 hours of poses, shows gas filaments whose origin is uncertain. Located about 12 million light - years from our planet, M81 (NGC 3031) together with M82 (NGC 3034), NGC 3077 and NGC 2976 forms one of the most iconic groups of interacting galaxies. The M81 group has also been the subject of many studies searching for and analyzing evidence of strong interactions among its components. In 1965, Halton Arp detected an unusual looping feature near M81 while examining photographic plates produced with the 48 - inch Schmidt on Mount Palomar. Traditionally, ARP's loop has been interpreted as a tail resulting from the tidal interaction between M81 and M82. However, since its discovery that explanation has been doubted by many researchers. Interestingly, the region of the sky containing the M81 group of galaxies is filled with Galactic cirrus and ARP's loop exhibits colors and emission properties similar to those observed in Galactic cirrus clouds. This optical image suggests that the light observed at optical wavelengths is a combination of emissions from: recent star forming regions situated near M81, the extended disk of M81 and scattered light from the same Galactic cirrus that is responsible for the bulk of the far infrared emissions. Although our observations cannot exclude the presence of some material stripped from the disk of M81 (NGC 3031) and/or M82 (NGC 3034) that is chance located in our line of sight to and far behind this intruiging structure, our findings suggest that ARP's Loop is situated between the observer and M81 (

Galaxies NGC 5426 and NGC 5427 in the Virgin - Galaxies NGC 5426 and NGC 5427 in Virgo - Arp 271 desks the two spiral galaxies of similar sizes in interaction NGC 5426 and NGC 5427. Located 90 million years ago - light in the constellation of Virgo, Arp 271 is about 130,000 years - light in diameter. Although it is uncertain whether this interaction leads to a fusion of galaxies, the galaxies are already gravitationally affected by each other and a bridge of matter has formed between the two. Image obtained with a telescope of 80 cm. NGC 5426 and NGC 5427 are two spiral galaxies of similar sizes engaged in a dramatic dance. It is not certain that this interaction will end in a collision and ultimately a merging of the two galaxies, although the galaxies have already been affected. Together known as Arp 271, this dance will last for tens of millions of years, creating new stars as a result of the mutual gravitational attraction between the galaxies, a pull seen in the bridge of stars already connecting the two. Located 90 million light - years away towards the constellation of Virgo (the Virgin), the Arp 271 pair is about 130 000 light - years across. It was originally discovered in 1785 by William Herschel. Quite possibly, our own Milky Way will undergo a similar collision in about five billion years with the neighbouring Andromeda galaxy, which is now located about 2.6 million light - years away from the Milky Way. This image was taken with a 32 - inch Schulman Telescope (RC Optical Systems)

It interacts with another spiral galaxy, LEDA 62867, on the left; it will probably swallow it in the distant future. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on March 10, 2002. This Hubble image displays a beautiful pair of interacting spiral galaxies with swirling arms. The smaller of the two, dubbed LEDA 62867 and positioned to the left of the frame, seems to be safe for now, but will probably be swallowed by the larger spiral galaxy, NGC 6786 (to the right) eventually. Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - Galaxies NGC 5078 and IC 879 in Hydra - NGC 5078 is a spiral galaxy located about 95 million years ago - light. A small galaxy, IC 879, at the bottom of the picture, is probably interacting with it. Image obtained with a 50 cm telescope, composite of several poses. NGC 5078 is a lenticular (lens - shaped) galaxy crossed by a distinct dusty band which is seen against the bright background of the galaxy itself. The dust lane is warped and broadened, probably by interaction with the faint companion galaxy IC 879, which is itself distorted into an 'S' shape by the interaction. The slightly bluish colour of parts of the fainter galaxy is suggestive of star formation, probably triggered by the interaction. Encounters between galaxies such as this are common, and often lead to them merging into a single entity. It is likely that the dust lane of NGC 5078 is the remnant of a dusty spiral which fell into it long ago. The galaxies are about 95 million light years distant
Colliding spiral galaxies NGC 2207 and IC 2163 - Colliding galaxies NGC 2207 and IC 2163 - The galaxies NGC 2207 (left) and IC 2163 (right) form a pair of colliding galaxies approximately 114 million light years away. Currently IC 2163 is moving away from NGC 2207, but it is likely that within several billion years these two galaxies will eventually merge into a single massive galaxy. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1998. The larger and more massive galaxy is cataloged as NGC 2207 (on the left in the Hubble Heritage image), and the smaller one on the right is IC 2163. Strong tidal forces from NGC 2207 have distorted the shape of IC 2163, flinging out stars and gas into long streamers stretching out a hundred thousand light - years towards the right - hand edge of the image. The calculations indicate that IC 2163 is swinging past NGC 2207 in a counterclockwise direction, having made its closest approach 40 million years ago. However, IC 2163 does not have sufficient energy to escape from the gravitational pull of NGC 2207, and is destined to be pulled back and swing past the larger galaxy again in the future. The high resolution of the Hubble telescope image reveals dust lanes in the spiral arms of NGC 2207, clearly silhouetted against IC 2163, which is in the background. The large concentrations of gas and dust in both galaxies may well erupt into regions of active star formation in the near future. Eventually, billions of years from now, these galaxies will merge into a single, more massive galaxy. It is believed that many present - day galaxies, including the Milky Way, were assembled from a similar process of coalescence of smaller galaxies occurring over billions of years
Galaxy ESO 69 - 6 - Galaxy ESO 69 - 6 - The galaxy ESO 69 - 6 is about 650 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Southern Triangle. This system consists of two interacting galaxies. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on April 8, 2002. ESO 69 - 6 is an interacting pair of galaxies located in the constellation of Triangulum Australe, the Southern Triangle, about 650 million light - years away from Earth. Long tidal tails sweep out from the two galaxies: gas and stars were stripped out and torn away from the outer regions of the galaxies. The presence of these tails is the unique signature of an interaction. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on April 8, 2002

Galaxy NGC 2798 in the Lynx - Arp 283 - Arp 283 is a pair of galaxies (NGC 2798, bottom, and NGC 2799 above) in interaction. These galaxies are located about 90 million light years away from Earth. Arp 283 consists of two interacting galaxies, NGC 2798 bottom and NGC 2799. It does appear the interaction has created huge tidal plumes on NGC 2798 and has warped the disk of NGC 2799 into a sort arc. NGC 2798 is classed as a barred spiral. NGC 2799 is seen almost edge on. Most sources consider it a SB galaxy, that is a barred spiral, but a few consider it as Sc. The pair appear to be about 90 million light - years away

Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is about 25 million years away - light from Earth. Image obtained with a telescope of 35 cm, 12 hours of poses. NGC 6744 is a majestic spiral galaxy in the southern constellation of Pavo. It has great similarities to the Milky Way galaxy in both form and structure. It lies at a distance of approximately 25 million Light Years. At its northern tip NGC 6744 is interacting with a dwarf companion galaxy much in the same way the Milky Way interacts with the Large Magellanic Cloud. The northernmost spiral arm is most likely being stretched and its stars and gas stripped due to tidal pull from the dwarf companion. Likewise the stars of the companion will likely be engulfed and the companion will ultimately merge with NGC 6744 at a far off future time. Interacting galaxies NGC 1614 - Interacting galaxies NGC 1614 - The galaxy NGC 1614 is located about 200 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Eridan. This system is composed of interacting galaxies. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on August 13, 2002. The galaxy system NGC 1614 has a bright optical center and two clear inner spiral arms that are fairly symmetrical. It also has a spectacular outer structure that consists principally of a large one - sided curved extension of one of these arms to the lower right, and a long, almost straight tail that emerges from the nucleus and crosses the extended arm to the upper right. The galaxy appears to be the result of a tidal interaction and the resulting merger of two predecessor systems. The system has a nuclear region of quasar - like luminosity, but shows no direct evidence for an active nucleus. It is heavily and unevenly reddened across its nucleus, while infrared imaging also shows a ridge of dust. The linear tail to the upper right and extended arms to the lower right are likely the remains of an interacting companion and the tidal plume (s) caused by the collision. NGC 1614 is located about 200 million light - years away from Earth in the constellation of Eridanus, the River. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on august 13, 2002

Black Holes in 3C75 - Black Holes in 3C75 - Composite X-ray image (blue) and radio (pink) of the active galaxy 3C 75. At the center of this very hot gas mass, two supermassive black holes separated by 25,000 years - light form a binary system of black holes (the two bright points). This composite X - ray/radio image of Abell 400 shows radio jets (pink), immersed in a vast cloud of multimillion degree X - ray emitting gas (blue) that pervades the cluster. The jets emanate from the vicinity of two supermassive black holes (bright spots in the image) in the galaxy. Chandra and radio data confirm that the unusual structure is due to the merger of two large galaxies, whose supermassive black holes are bound together by their mutual gravity. The swept - back appearance of the radio jets is produced by the rapid motion of the galaxy through the hot gas of the cluster, in much the same way that a motorcyclist's scarf is swept back while speeding down the road
Interacting galaxies ZW II 96 - Interacting galaxies ZW II 96 - The galaxy ZW II 96 is located about 500 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Dolphin. This system consists of interacting galaxies shows an important star formation. This is a system of merging galaxies with a bizarre shape. Powerful young starburst regions hang as long threadlike structures between the main galaxy cores. The system almost qualifies as an ultra - luminous system, but has not yet reached the late stage of coalescence that is the norm for most ultra - luminous systems. ZW II 96 is located in the constellation of Delphinus, the Dolphin, about 500 million light - years away from Earth

Interacting spiral galaxies Arp 87 - Interacting galaxies Arp 87 - This pair of interaction galaxies called Arp 87 is composed of the galaxy NGC 3808, on the right, and its companion NGC 3808A. Both are spiral galaxies. An arm of NGC 3808, consisting of dust, gas and stars, envelops his companion. The interaction of these galaxies causes intense star formation. Arp 87 is located 300 million light years from Earth in the constellation Lion. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in February 2007. Arp 87 is a stunning pair of interacting galaxies. Stars, gas, and dust flow from the large spiral galaxy, NGC 3808, forming an enveloping arm around its companion. The shapes of both galaxies have been distorted by their gravitational interaction. Arp 87 is located in the constellation of Leo, the Lion, approximately 300 million light - years away from Earth. Arp 87 appears in ARP's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. As also seen in similar interacting galaxies, the corkscrew shape of the tidal material suggests that some stars and gas drawn from the larger galaxy have been caught in the gravitational pull of the smaller one. This image was taken in February 2007 with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 detector

Galaxies UGC 1810 and UGC 1813 in Andromede - Galaxies UGC 1810 and UGC 1813 in Andromeda - These two interacting galaxies also called Arp 273 are located about 340 million years ago - light from Earth in the constellation Andromede. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), December 17, 2010. These galaxies also cataloged as Arp 273 lie at a distance of about 340 million light - years. Their distorted appearance is due to gravitational tides as the pair engage in close encounters. The larger of the spiral galaxies, known as UGC 1810, has a disk that is distorted into a rose - like shape by the gravitational tidal pull of the companion galaxy below it, known as UGC 1813. This image is a composite of Hubble Wide Field Camera 3 data taken on December 17, 2010, with three separate filters that allow a broad range of wavelengths covering the ultraviolet, blue, and red portions of the spectrum
Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is about 30 million years away - light from Earth. This galaxy is very similar to our galaxy, the lactee path. Image obtained by the 2.2 meter MPG/ESO telescope at the La Silla Observatory. This picture of the nearby galaxy NGC 6744 was taken with the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2 - metre telescope at La Silla. The large spiral galaxy is similar to the Milky Way, making this image look like a picture postcard of our own galaxy sent from extragalactic space. The picture was created from exposures taken through four different filters that passed blue, yellow - green, red light, and the glow coming from hydrogen gas. These are shown in this picture as blue, green, orange and red, respectively
Spiral galaxy M100 in Berenice's Hair - Spiral galaxy M100 in Coma Berenices - The spiral galaxy M100 (NGC 4321) is located about 60 million years ago - light from Earth. It belongs to the Virgin's galaxy cluster. Several dwarf elliptic galaxies are visible in this image, one just above M100 probably interacting. This face - on spiral M100, is one of the finest spirals in the Virgo galaxy cluster. As might be expected in a galaxy - rich environment, the lack of perfect symmetry in its brightest spiral arms suggests that M100 has been disturbed by gravitational interaction with its neighbours. At the top of the image is a less spectacular galaxy, a so - called 'nucleated dwarf' elliptical galaxy, probably interacting with M100

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 2442 in Flying Fish - NGC 2442, a barred spiral galaxy in Volans - NGC 2442 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 50 million years ago - light. Its asymmetrical shape suggests that a galaxy interacts with it. Image made with Siding Spring's 3.9m telescope. This unusual barred spiral galaxy is in the far southern constellation of Volans and was discovered by Sir John Herschel who described one of its spiral arms as hook - like. Although not seen here, (but evident on very deep images) NGC 2442 appears to have a less massive, distant companion that is also distorted, and it seems likely that the two have had a close encounter in the recent past. If there are no further meetings, the forces that hold NGC 2442 together will restore galaxy to a more symmetrical spiral form. However, much more likely is that the companion has been captured by the distorted spiral and will eventually be devoured by it, triggering a dramatic bout of star formation. NGC 2442 is about 50 million light years distant

Interacting galaxies NGC 5394 and NGC 5395 - Interacting galaxies NGC 5394 and NGC 5395 - The galaxies NGC 5394 (the small galaxy on the right) and NGC 5395 are located about 180 million years of light from Earth in the constellation Hunting Dogs. These two spiral galaxies are interacting. Image obtained on May 24, 2009 with a telescope measuring 61 cm in diameter. NGC 5394 (the smaller galaxy to the right) and companion galaxy NGC 5395 are located at about 180 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici. This pair is included in ARP's catalog of unusual galaxies as Arp 84
Galaxy NGC 17 in the Whale - Galaxy NGC 17 in Cetus - The galaxy NGC 17 is located about 250 million years away from Earth. Presented with a single nucleus, its shape indicates that it has finished absorbing another galaxy. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on 4 July 2002. This galaxy features a single nucleus, a containing a blue central disk with delicate fine structure in the outer parts and tidal tails indicative of two former disk galaxies. At present these galaxies appear to have completed their merger. The remnant shows clear signs that the merger was gas - rich and accompanied by a starburst. NGC 17 is gas - rich and can sustain its strong central starburst and present mild central activity for some time to come. NGC 17 is located about 250 million light - years away in the constellation of Cetus, the Whale. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on july 4, 2002
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 6872 in interaction with IC 4970 in the Peacock - Barred spiral interacting galaxy NGC 6872 in Pavo - The barree spiral galaxy NGC 6872 and lenticular IC 4970 are located about 300 million years away - light from Earth. NGC 6872 extends over nearly 750,000 years - light. Image obtained by the ANTU telescope of the VLT on March 29, 1999. View of the spectacular barred spiral galaxy NGC 6872 obtained with FORS1 at ANTU telescope (VLT) in the morning of March 29, 1999. It is of type SBB and is accompanied by a smaller, interacting galaxy, IC 4970 of type S0 (just above the centre). The bright object to the lower right of the galaxies is a star in the Milky Way whose image has been strongly overexposed and exhibits multiple optical reflections in the telescope and instrument. There are also many other, fainter and more distant galaxies of many different forms in the field. The upper left spiral arm of NGC 6872 is significantly disturbed and is populated by a plethora of blueish objects, many of which are star - forming regions. This may have been caused by a recent passage of IC 4970 through it. This interesting system is located in the southern constellation Pavo (The Peacock). It is comparatively distant, almost 300 million light - years away. It extends over more than 7 arcmin in the sky and its real size from tip to tip is thus almost 750,000 light - years. It is in fact one of the largest known, barred spiral galaxies

Galaxy ESO 99 - 4 - Galaxy ESO 99 - 4 - The special galaxy ESO 99 - 4 is about 400 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Southern Triangle. Its tormented shape suggests that it has absorbed another galaxy. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on April 13, 2002. ESO 99 - 4 is a galaxy with a highly peculiar shape that is probably the remnant of an earlier merger process that has deformed it beyond visual recognition, leaving the main body largely obscured by dark bands of dust. ESO 99 - 4 lies in a rich field of foreground stars, in the constellation of Triangulum Australe, the Southern Triangle, about 400 million light - years away. It's a pair of interacting galaxies that will probably merge into a single galaxy. Regions of intense star formations appear in blue. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on 19 March 2002. ESO 593 - 8 is an impressive pair of interacting galaxies with a feather - like galaxy crossing a companion galaxy. The two components will probably merge to form a single galaxy in the future. The pair is adorned with a number of bright blue star clusters. ESO 593 - 8 is located in the constellation of Sagittarius, the Archer, some 650 million light - years away from Earth. Galaxy ESO 77 - 14 - Galaxy ESO 77 - 14 - The galaxy ESO 77 - 14 is about 550 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of the Indian. This system consists of two interacting galaxies. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on August 17, 2001. This image of ESO 77 - 14 is a stunning snapshot of a celestial dance performed by a pair of similar sized galaxies. Two clear signatures of the gravitational tug of war between the galaxies are the bridge of material that connects them and the disruption of their main bodies. The galaxy on the right has a long, bluish arm while its companion has a shorter, redder arm. This interacting pair is in the constellation of Indus, the Indian, some 550 million light - years away from Earth. The dust lanes between the two galaxy centers show the extent of the distortion to the originally flat disks that have been pulled into three - dimensional shapes. Interacting Galaxies Markarian 848 - Interacting galaxies Markarian 848 - The Markarian 848 galaxy is located about 550 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Bovier. This galaxy consists of two galaxies that merge. The nuclei of each of these galaxies are still visible and are apart by 16,000 light years. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on November 13, 2001. VV 705, or Markarian 848, consists of two galaxies that seem to be embracing each other. Two long, highly curved arms of gas and stars emerge from a central region with two cores. One arm, curving clockwise, stretches to the top of the image where it makes a U - turn and interlocks with the other arm that curves up counter - clockwise from below. The two cores are 16,000 light - years apart. The pair is thought to be midway through a merger. Markarian 848 is located in the constellation of Bootes, the Bear Watcher, and is approximately 550 million light - years away from Earth. Collision galaxy NGC 520 - Galaxy NGC 520 in Pisces - The galaxy NGC 520, is about 100 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Pisces. This system consists of two colliding galaxies. The merger started 300 million years ago. The two galaxies are only in the middle of this process, their disk having merged but not yet their kernel. NGC 520 is among the brightest pairs of galaxies, and is visible with a small telescope. NGC 520 is the product of a collision between two disk galaxies that started 300 million years ago. It examplifies the middle stages of the merging process: the disks of the parent galaxies have merged together, but the nuclei have not yet coalesced. It features an odd - looking tail of stars and a prominent dust lane that runs diagonally across the center of the image and obscures the galaxy. NGC 520 is one of the brightest galaxy pairs on the sky, and can be observed with a small telescope towards the constellation of Pisces, the Fish, having the appearance of a comet. It is about 100 million light - years away and about 100,000 light - years across. The galaxy pair is included in ARP's catalog of peculiar galaxies as Arp 157
Group of Galaxies HCG 31 - Hickson Compact Group 31 - This group of interacting galaxies is located 166 million years of light from Earth in the constellation Eridan. Dwarf galaxies are merging causing intense star formation. This long fusion process will lead to the birth of a large elliptical galaxy. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on August 8, 2006. These four dwarf galaxies waited billions of years to come together, setting off a fireworks show as thousands of new star clusters come to life. The distorted galaxies are quickly producing massive, hot, young stars that are pumping out ultraviolet radiation, heating up surrounding gas clouds, and causing them to glow. Such encounters between dwarf galaxies are normally seen billions of light - years away and therefore occurred billions of years ago. But these galaxies, members of Hickson Compact Group 31, are relatively nearby, only 166 million light - years away. In this image, taken by Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope, the bright, distorted object at middle, left, is actually two colliding dwarf galaxies. Myriad star clusters have formed in the streamers of debris pulled from the galaxies and at the site of their head - on collision. The cigar - shaped object above the galaxy duo is another member of the group. A bridge of star clusters connects the trio. A long rope of bright star clusters points to the fourth member of the group, at lower right. The bright object in the center is a foreground star. Astronomers used Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys to resolve the youngest and brightest of star clusters, which allowed them to calculate the clusters' ages, map the star - formation history, and determine that the galaxies are starting the final stages of galaxy assembly. Hubble reveals that the brightest clusters, hefty groups each holding at least 100,000 stars, are less than 10 million years old. Astronomers say the interacting galaxies will form
Interacting galaxies NGC 454 - Interacting galaxies NGC 454 - NGC 454 is located about 164 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Phenix. This pair of interacting galaxies consists of a large elliptical galaxy and an irregular galaxy. The fusion process between the two galaxies is still in its early stages and no sign of star formation caused by this interaction has been detected. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on 6 March 1997. NGC 454 is galaxy pair comprising a large red elliptical galaxy and an irregular gas - rich blue galaxy. The system is in the early stages of an interaction that has severely distorted both components. The three bright blue knots of very young stars to the left of the two main components are probably part of the irregular blue galaxy. Although the dust lanes that stretch all the way to the center of the elliptical galaxy suggest that gas has penetrated that far, no signs of star formation or nuclear activity are visible. The pair is approximately 164 million light - years away. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on March 6, 1997
Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on October 22, 2004. Markarian Galaxy 273 - Galaxy Markarian 273 - The Markarian galaxy 273 is about 500 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Great Bear. The presence of a 130,000-year-long maree tail suggests that Markarian 273 is the fusion of two galaxies. The collision caused a burst of star formations. This galaxy has a double core and is one of the brightest infrared galaxies. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on November 16, 2001. Markarian 273 shows an intricate central region and a striking tail that extends diagonally towards the bottom - right of the image. The tail is about 130 thousand light - years long and is strongly indicative of a merger between two galaxies. Markarian 273 has an intense region of starburst, where 60 solar masses of new stars are born each year. Near - infrared observations reveal a nucleus with two components. Markarian 273 is one of the most luminous galaxies when observed in the infrared, and is located 500 million light - years away from Earth in the constellation of Ursa Major. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on November 16, 2001
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 2442 in Flying Fish - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 2442 in Volans - NGC 2442 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 50 million years ago - light. Its asymmetrical shape suggests that a galaxy interacts with it. Image obtained by the 2.2 meter MPG/ESO telescope at the La Silla Observatory. NGC 2442 is a barred spiral galaxy about 50 million light years away in the constellation Volans. This picture of the Meathook Galaxy (NGC 2442) was taken by the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2 - metre telescope at La Silla, Chile. This view includes the whole galaxy and the surrounding sky, and clearly shows the asymmetric spiral arms. The longer of the two arms has intense star formation, which is visible here as a pink glow: this is due to the radiation of young stars ionising the gas they form from. The asymmetric shape and star formation are both thought to be caused by tidal disruptions from a near - miss with another galaxy at some point in its history
Seyfert's Sextet Group of Galaxies in the Snake - Seyfert's Sextet group of galaxies - This group of interacting galaxies resides approximately 190 million years ago - light in the constellation of the Snake and extends over 100,000 years - light. The small spiral galaxy seen from the front does not belong to this group. The small face - on spiral with the prominent arms [center] of gas and stars is a background galaxy almost five times farther away than the other four. Only a chance alignment makes it appear as if it is part of the group. The sixth member of the sextet isn't a galaxy at all but a long “” tidal tail””” of stars [below, right] torn from one of the galaxies. The group resides 190 million light - years away in the constellation Serpens. This densely packed grouping spans just 100,000 light - years, occupying less volume than the Milky Way galaxy. Each galaxy is about 35,000 light - years wide. Three of the galaxies [the elliptical galaxy, second from top, and the two spiral galaxies at the bottom] bear the telltale marks of close interactions with each other, or perhaps with an interloper galaxy not pictured here. Their distorted shapes suggest that gravitational forces have reshaped them. The halos around the galaxies indicate that stars have been ripped away. The galaxy at bottom, center, has a 35,000 light - year - long tail of stars flowing from it. The tail may have been pulled from the galaxy about 500 million years ago. Although part of the group, the nearly edge - on spiral galaxy at top, center, remains relatively undisturbed, except for the slight warp in its disk. Most of its stars have remained within its galactic boundaries. Unlike most other galaxy interactions observed with the Hubble telescope, this group shows no evidence of the characteristic blue regions of young star clusters, which generally arise during galaxy interactions. The lack of star - forming clusters suggests that there is something different about Seyfert's Sextet compared wi
Galaxy IC 883 - Galaxy IC 883 - The particular galaxy IC 883 (Arp 193) is located about 300 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Hunting Dogs. Its shape presents two antennas, maree tails, suggesting that IC 883 is the fusion of two galaxies. The collision caused a burst of star formations as evidenced by the presence of star clusters in the central region. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on January 10, 2002. IC 883 displays a very disturbed, complex central region with two tidal tails of approximately the same length emerging at nearly right angles: one diagonally to the top right of the frame and the other to the bottom right. The twin tidal tails suggest that IC 883 is the remnant of the merger of two gas - rich disk galaxies. The collision appears to have triggered a burst of star formation, indicated by a number of bright star clusters in the central region. IC 883 is 300 million light - years away towards the constellation of Canes Venatici, the Hunting Dogs. It is Number 193 in ARP's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on january 10, 2002
Group of galaxies HCG 87 in Capricorn - Hickson Compact Group 87 in Capricornus - Group of galaxies in interaction situated 400 million years ago - light from Earth. The largest of these galaxies (HCG 87a) is a spiral galaxy seen by the slice; it and its neighbor the elliptical galaxy HCG 87b probably have a central black hole. The third member of this group, the spiral galaxy HCG 87c appears to be in an active phase of star formation. Group of interacting galaxies located at about 400 million light - years. The largest galaxy member (HCG 87a), which is actually disk - shaped, but tilted so that we see it nearly edge - on and its elliptically shaped nearest neighbor (87b) have active galactic nuclei which are believed to harbor black holes that are consuming gas. A third group member, the nearby spiral galaxy 87c, may be undergoing a burst of active star formation. These three galaxies are so close to each other that gravitational forces disrupt their structure and alter their evolution
Interacting galaxies Arp 81 - Interacting galaxies Arp 81 - Arp 81 is located about 300 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Dragon. This pair of interacting galaxies is composed of NGC 6621 on the left and NGC 6622 on the right. NGC 6621 is the largest of the two galaxies. The collision, seen here about 100 million years later, caused intense star flames. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on 15 March 1999. NGC 6621/2 (VV 247, Arp 81) is a strongly interacting pair of galaxies, seen about 100 million years after their closest approach. It consists of NGC 6621 (to the left) and NGC 6622 (to the right). NGC 6621 is the larger of the two, and is a very disturbed spiral galaxy. The encounter has pulled a long tail out of NGC 6621 that has now wrapped behind its body. The collision has also triggered extensive star formation between the two galaxies. Scientists believe that Arp 81 has a richer collection of young massive star clusters than the notable Antennae galaxies (which are much closer than Arp 81). The pair is located in the constellation of Draco, approximately 300 million light - years away from Earth. Arp 81 is the 81st galaxy in ARP's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on March 15, 1999
Interacting spiral galaxy NGC 1532 in Eridan - Interacting galaxy NGC 1532 in Eridanus - The spiral galaxy NGC 1532 is located about 70 million light years ago in the southern constellation of Eridan. It interacts with a dwarf galaxy, NGC 1531, visible just above it, which it will absorb in a few million years. Image obtained from the 1.5m Danish telescope of La Silla in Chile. NGC 1532, the large distorted spiral is in the process of cannibalizing the dwarf elliptical NGC 1531. The process takes millions of years. Large galaxies like our Milky Way typically engulf smaller galaxies, incorporating their stars and gas over millions of years into the larger galactic structure. These galaxies are located 70 million light years away in southern constellation of Eridanus. This image was made at the danish 1.5 meter telescope in La Silla, Chile
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is located about 25 million years ago - light from Earth. Image obtained from the 3.9m telescope of Siding Spring, Australia. This beautiful galaxy is about 25 million light years away in the direction of Pavo, a constellation of the southern hemisphere winter. It sits in a rich starfield, and is strongly inclined to our line of sight. NGC 6744 is believed to one of the most Milky Way - like of all the nearby spirals, with fluffy (flocculent) spiral arms and a large and distinctly elongated nucleus. It also has other similarities to the Milky Way that are not visible here with at least one distorted companion galaxy superficially similar to one of the Magellanic Clouds

Interacting galaxies in the Austral Fish - Interacting galaxies in Piscis Austrinus - The galaxies NGC 7173 (middle left), NGC 7174 (middle right) and NGC 7176 (bottom right) photographed here by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), belong to a cluster of galaxies called Hickson Compact Group 90 (HCG 90), located about 100 million years ago lights in the constellation of Southern Fish. NGC 7173 and NGC 7176 are two elliptical galaxies while NGC 7174 is a spiral galaxy deformed by the gravitational forces exerted by its neighbors. The three pictured galaxies - - NGC 7173 (middle left), NCG 7174 (middle right) and NGC 7176 (lower right) - - are part of the Hickson Compact Group 90, named after astronomer Paul Hickson, who first catalogued these small clusters of galaxies in the 1980s. NGC 7173 and NGC 7176 appear to be smooth, normal elliptical galaxies without much gas and dust. In stark contrast, NGC 7174 is a mangled spiral galaxy, barely clinging to independent existence as it is ripped apart by its close neighbours. The strong tidal interaction surging through the galaxies has dragged a significant number of stars away from their home galaxies. These stars are now spread out, forming a tenuous luminous component in the galaxy group. This trio is part of a tight cluster of 16 galaxies, many of them being dwarf galaxies. The galaxy cluster Hickson Compact Group 90 lies about 100 million light - years away in the direction of the constellation Piscis Austrinus, the Southern Fish
Interacting galaxies NGC 6090 - Interacting galaxies NGC 6090 - The galaxy NGC 6090 is located about 400 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Dragon. This interacting galaxy consists of two spiral galaxies whose nuclei are distant from 10,000 light years. This system is halfway through its merger process. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on November 12, 2005. NGC 6090 is a beautiful pair of spiral galaxies with an overlapping central region and two long tidal tails formed from material ripped out of the galaxies by gravitational interaction. The two visible cores are approximately 10,000 light - years apart, suggesting that the two galaxies are at an intermediate stage in the merging process. The Hubble image reveals bright knots of newborn stars in the region where the two galaxies overlap. The right hand component has a clear spiral structure if viewed face - on, while the other is seen edge - on with no spiral arms visible. NGC 6090 is located in the constellation of Draco, the Dragon, about 400 million light - years away from Earth. A number of fainter, and more distant, background galaxies is seen in the image. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on November 12, 2005

Interacting Galaxies Arp 240 - Interacting galaxies Arp 240 - The galaxy Arp 240 is located about 300 million light years away from Earth in the constellation of the Virgin. Composed of spiral galaxies NGC 5257 and NGC 5258, this interacting system presents important star formations. The two galaxies contain a supermassive black hole in the centre. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on 20 December 2001. NGC 5257/8 (Arp 240) is an astonishing galaxy pair, composed of spiral galaxies of similar mass and size, NGC 5257 and NGC 5258. The galaxies are visibly interacting with each other via a bridge of dim stars connecting the two galaxies, almost like two dancers holding hands while performing a pirouette. Both galaxies harbor supermassive black holes in their centers and are actively forming new stars in their disks. Arp 240 is located in the constellation Virgo, approximately 300 million light - years away, and is the 240th galaxy in ARP's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. With the exception of a few foreground stars from our own Milky Way all the objects in this image are galaxies. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on december 20, 2001
Galaxy NGC 1232 in Eridan - Spiral galaxy NGC 1232 in Eridanus - Image of the large spiral galaxy NGC 1232 obtained by the VLT in September 1998. In the arms, many star-forming regions are visible, while in the center of the galaxy, older resident stars. Note the presence on the left of a dwarf galaxy. NGC 1232 is located about 100 million years ago - light. The field of this photo is about 200,000 years old - light, double our galaxy, the Lactee Way. NGC 1232 is located 20 degrees south of the celestial equator, in the constellation Eridanus (The River). The distance is about 100 million light - years. The edge of the field shown here corresponds to about 200,000 lightyears, or about twice the size of the Milky Way galaxy. This image of the large spiral galaxy NGC 1232 was obtained on September 21, 1998, by the FORS instrument at VLT. The colours of the different regions are well visible: the central areas contain older stars of reddish colour, while the spiral arms are populated by young, blue stars and many star - forming regions. Note the distorted companion galaxy on the left side of the image, shaped like the greek letter “” theta””
Interacting galaxies NGC 2936 and NGC 2937 - Interacting Galaxies NGC 2936 and NGC 2937 in Hydra - These two interacting galaxies also called Arp 142 are located approximately 326 million years ago - light from Earth in the constellation Hydra. NGC 2936 is a spiral galaxy, NGC 2937 is an elliptical galaxy. Above the torque, a blue galaxy UGC 5130, located closer to us is 230 million light years. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This interacting galaxy duo is collectively called Arp 142. The pair contains the disturbed, star - forming spiral galaxy NGC 2936, along with its elliptical companion, NGC 2937 at lower left. Once part of a flat, spiral disk, the orbits of the galaxy's stars have become scrambled due to gravitational tidal interactions with the other galaxy. This warps the galaxy's orderly spiral, and interstellar gas is strewn out into giant tails like stretched taffy. Gas and dust drawn from the heart of NGC 2936 becomes compressed during the encounter, which in turn triggers star formation. These bluish knots are visible along the distorted arms that are closest to the companion elliptical. The reddish dust, once within the galaxy, has been thrown out of the galaxy's plane and into dark veins that are silhouetted against the bright starlight from what is left of the nucleus and disk. The companion elliptical, NGC 2937, is a puffball of stars with little gas or dust present. The stars contained within the galaxy are mostly old, as evidenced by their reddish color. There are no blue stars that would be evidence of recent star formation. While the orbits of this elliptical's stars may be altered by the encounter, it's not apparent that the gravitational pull by its neighboring galaxy is having much of an effect. Above the pair, an unrelated, lone, bluish galaxy, inconsistently cataloged as UGC 5130, appears to be an elongated irregular or an edge - on spiral. Located 230 million light - ye
Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is about 25 million years away - light from Earth.
