Ice on the Moon - Illustration - Lunar ice - Illustration - Artist's view of ice on the surface of a crater that remains perpetually in the shade of the Sun, near the poles. Water from an encounter with an icy comet has collected in the perpetual shade of a deep crater where the temperature is a constant - 380o F. In 1998, the unmanned Lunar Prospector probe discovered evidence for water ice on the surface of the moon. Some scientists believe that as much as 10 to 300 million tons of ice may reside at the moon's North and South poles. The source of the ice is thought to be from one or more comets that struck the moon's surface four billion years ago. (It is thought that Earth's water may have come from comets as well.) Unfortunately, the moon's small size and lack of an atmosphere caused it to lose almost all of its accumulated water to space. Any water that does remain on the moon would likely be on the poles, hidden in craters and depressions shaded from the Sun

Apollo 15: Feather and Hammer Experience - Apollo 15: David Scott watching hammer and feather fall - David Scott realizes the experience of pen and hammer on the Moon. To confirm the law of the fall of Galilee's bodies, David Scott simultaneously released a geologist's hammer held in his right hand and a falcon feather held in his left hand. Both objects fell almost at the same moment on the lunar ground, 1.2 seconds later. TV picture. August 2, 1971. Astronaut David R. Scott, Apollo 15 commander, watches a geological hammer and a feather hit the lunar surface simultaneously in a test of Galileo's law of motion concerning falling bodies, as seen in this color reproduction taken from a transmission made by the RCA color television camera mounted on the Lunar Roving Vehicle. Scott released the hammer from his right hand and the feather from his left at the same instant. This experiment occured toward the end of the third and final lunar surface extravehicular activity. August 2 1971
Apollo 11: N.Armstrong and E.Aldrin deploy the flag - Apollo 11: the deployment of the US flag - Deploiement of the United States flag by astronauts Neil Armstrong (left) and Edwin Aldrin. Image obtained by the camera mounted on the LEM. The deployment of the flag of the United States on the surface of the Moon is captured on film during the first Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. Here, astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, commander, stands on the left at the flagship's staff. Astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., lunar module pilot, is also pictured. The picture was taken from film exposed by the 16 mm Data Acquisition Camera (DAC) which was mounted in the Lunar Module (LM)

The renowned astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini was lured to France by Louis XIV, and the first scientific map of the moon was produced in Paris. From observations through a telescope in the 1670s he built up a completely recognisable picture of the lunar surface. As a result, the near side of the moon was better understood than much of the earth's surface.

Apollo 11: lunar rock - Apollo 11: lunar rock - First sample of lunar rock brought by astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission. 27 July 1969. This is the first lunar sample that was photographed in detail in the Lunar Receiving Laboratory at the Manned Spacecraft Center. The photograph shows a granular, fine - grained, mafic (iron magnesium rich) rock. At this early stage of the examination, this rock appears similar to several igneous rock types found on Earth. The scale is printed backwards due to the photographic configuration in the Vacuum Chamber. The sample number is 10003. This rock was among the samples collected by astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. during their lunar surface extravehicular activity on July 20, 1969. 27 July 1969

Earthrise and Moon seen since LRO. 10/2015 - Earthrise and Moon as seen from LRO. 10/2015 - Earthrise above the Moon seen from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Composite of images obtained on October 12, 2015. Nasa's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) captured a unique view of Earth from the spacecraft's vantage point in orbit around the moon. In this composite image we see Earth appear to rise over the lunar horizon from the viewpoint of the spacecraft, with the center of the Earth just off the coast of Liberia (at 4.04 degrees North, 12.44 degrees West). The large tan area in the upper right is the Sahara Desert, and just beyond is Saudi Arabia. The Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America are visible to the left. On the moon, we get a glimpse of the crater Compton, which is located just beyond the eastern limb of the moon, on the lunar farside. LRO was launched on June 18, 2009, and has collected a treasure trove of data with its seven powerful instruments, making an invaluable contribution to our knowledge about the moon. LRO experiences 12 earthrises every day; however the spacecraft is almost always busy imaging the lunar surface so only rarely does an opportunity arise such that its camera instrument can capture a view of Earth. Occasionally LRO points off into space to acquire observations of the extremely thin lunar atmosphere and perform instrument calibration measurements. During these movements sometimes Earth (and other planets) pass through the camera's field of view and dramatic images such as the one shown here are acquired. This image was composed from a series of images taken Oct. 12, when LRO was about 83 miles (134 kilometers) above the moon's farside crater Compton. Capturing an image of the Earth and moon with LRO's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) instrument is a complicated task. First the spacecraft must be rolled to the side (in this case 67 degrees), then the spacecraft slews with the direction of travel

Liquid mirror telescope on the Moon - Lunar liquid mirror telescope - Illustration of an astronomical observatory on the Moon. Installs near the southern pole of the Moon, a giant telescope with liquid mirror, one kilometre in diameter. A giant liquid mirror telescope 1 kilometer wide (6 tenths of a mile) and 1 kilometer tall lies nestled in an approximately 1 kilometer wide crater near the Moon's south pole. In the foreground is a kind of lunar city for human habitation composed of pressurized and radiation-hardened living units. On the upper right are landing pads for transports arriving to and departing from the lunar surface. A liquid mirror telescope is a Newtonian reflecting type telescope that employs a reflecting liquid as the primary mirror. A concept first identified 300 years ago by Isaac Newton himself, the reflecting liquid assumes the proper paraboloidal shape by rotating the container the liquid is in. On Earth working liquid mirror telescopes have been created with diameters up to 20 feet using mercury metal as the reflecting liquid. One limitation is that liquid metal mirror can only be used in zenith telescopes that look straight up at the sky, so it is not suitable for investigations where the telescope must remain pointing at the same location of space. Given its low surface gravity and lack of distorting atmosphere, the Moon would be an ideal location for an extremely large liquid mirror telescope, however instead of mercury other liquids have been proposed, including low temperature ionic liquids that would be especially suitable for infrared observations. Given the Moons' lack of atmospheric pressure, any such liquid would need to have a zero vapor pressure to keep it from boiling away
