Open cluster M44 in cancer - Open star cluster M44 in Cancer - M44 is a cluster of stars located only 600 years - light from Earth, in the constellation Cancer. M44 (NGC 2632), the Beehive Cluster, also known as Praesepe, is an easy naked eye object more than twice the size across of the full moon, and has thus been noted since prehistoric times. It was one of the first objects on which Galileo trained his newly acquired telescope. M44 is one of the nearest open clusters, close to 600 light - years away
Open cluster M44 in cancer - Open star cluster M44 in Cancer - M44 is a cluster of stars located only 600 years - light from Earth, in the constellation Cancer. Image obtained with a 106 mm bezel, composite of different poses. Open cluster M44 in Cancer - M44, the Beehive Cluster - M44 is a cluster of stars located about 600 years - light from Earth, in the constellation Cancer. Constellation Cancer - Cancer constellation - Down the picture, the Creche cluster, M44
Constellation Cancer - Cancer constellation - At the top right, the star Pollux des Gemeaux. Cancer (the Crab) is a rather small constellation of 506 square degrees without any bright stars, however, the stick figure above strongly hints at a crab - like shape. The ecliptic runs through the middle of the main stars, which makes it one of the 12 zodiacal constellations. It is best seen in the early evening in March. The most obvious feature in the image above is the large open cluster Messier 44, also known as Praesepe, which appears to the unaided eye as a fuzzy patch. It is easly resolved into numerous faint stars in binoculars, hence its popular name, the Beehive cluster. Although inconspicuous, the constellation gave its name to the Tropic of Cancer. In ancient times Cancer was where the Sun appeared at its maximum mid - day elevation at the time of the (northern) summer solstice. Because of the precession of the equinoxes the northern summer solstice now occurs when the Sun is in Taurus. However, the Tropic of Cancer is still so names, and is the line of latitude around the northern hemisphere where the Sun is directly overhead at local noon on the day of the summer solstice

The zodiacal light - The zodiacal light - The zodiacal light and the constellation of the Lion (left). Also visible the M44 cluster in the top center with Mars. The Zodiacal light is visible here as a triangular - shaped cone of light rising on the left side of the photo and stretching to M44, the Beehive cluster, and Mars, which was next to the Beehive when this photo was taken. The winter Milky Way stretches along the right side of the photo. The Zodiacal light is composed of fine particles of dust in orbit around the sun and is visible because of scattered sunlight from the particles. The glow is brightest toward the sun from particles with diameters between a couple of micrometers and a few millimeters

Open cluster M44 in cancer - Open star cluster M44 in Cancer - M44 is a cluster of stars located 577 years - light from Earth, in the constellation Cancer. M44, the Praesepe or Beehive, is an open cluster located about halfway between Gemini and Leo. It is an easy naked eye object more than twice the size across the full moon. Galileo first observed it in a telescope as a collection of about 40 stars, and today's modern large telescopes reveal about 350 stars. M44 is about 577 light years away, and is about 400 million years old, the same age as the Hyades cluster
Total Eclipse of Sun. 01/08/2008 - Total Solar Eclipse of 2008 august 01 - Composite of images showing the solar crown, the ash light (the Moon lit by the Earth) the stars around the Sun (with the cluster of stars M44 at the top right) and the planet Mercury (bright dot on the left). 01/08/2008, Mongolia. Data from two different cameras were used for this image creation. The open cluster M 44 Praesepae (NGC 2632) dominates the star field. The bright object in the left part of the image is Mercury. The solar corona is traceable up to the distance of 20 solar radii. The position of the Moon represents the situation 62 seconds after the second contact (18:04:37 mongolia local time). Display of the solar corona, lunar surface and stars in the resulting image are highly beyond the ability of human vision during the eclipse
