La planete Neuf - Illustration - Planet Nine - Artwork: Vue d'artiste de la planete Neuf. The Ninth Planet is a hypothetical planet of the Solar System indirectly recorded, the existence of which is suggested by observing the orbits of several transneptunian objects. This planet would be gaseous, similar to Uranus or Neptune. A hypothetical planet in the outer reaches of the solar system orbits more than 700 times farther from the sun than earth does. A Super-earth, with an estimated mass of 10 Earths (approximately 5,000 times the mass of Pluto), a diameter two to four times that of Earth, and a highly elliptical orbit with an orbital period of approximately 15,000 years, the planet is shown as a ringed ice giant whose night side is illuminated by lightning and aurorae powered by galactic cosmic rays.
The Mission STEREO - STEREO Artist View - STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relationships Observatory) is a space mission of NASA to study Sun - Earth relations. STEREO consists of two twin satellites, one precedent the Earth in its revolution around the Sun and the other following it. The mission entered the operational phase in December 2006. Its nominal term of 2 years has been extended. STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relationships Observatory) is the third mission in NASA's Solar Terrestrial Probes program (STP). The mission, launched in October 2006, has provided a unique and revolutionary view of the Sun - Earth System. The two almost identical observatories - one ahead of Earth in its orbit, the other trailing behind - have traced the flow of energy and matter from the Sun to Earth. STEREO has revealed the 3D structure of coronal mass ejections; violent eruptions of matter from the sun that can disrupt satellites and power grids, and help us understand why they happen. STEREO is a key addition to the fleet of space weather detection satellites by providing more accurate alerts for the arrival time of Earth - directed solar ejections with its unique side - viewing perspective
Satellite COROT - Artist's view of COROT - Artist's view of COROT - Artist's view of the satellite COROT in space. Launched at the end of December 2006, this satellite studies the physical phenomena occurring inside the stars. It is also used for the detection of extrasolar planets by observing the periodic micro-eclipses that these planets cause by passing in front of their mother star. This artist's view shows the COROT satellite, consisting of a 30 - centimetre space telescope launched in late 2006. COROT uses its telescope to monitor closely the changes in a star's brightness that comes from a planet crossing in front of it. While it is looking at a star, COROT is also able to detect 'starquakes', acoustical waves generated deep inside a star that send ripples across a star's surface, altering its brightness. The exact nature of the ripples allows astronomers to calculate the star's precise mass, age and chemical composition

Remnants of Supernova Tycho in X in Cassiopee - Tycho's Supernova Remnant: Chandra's View of Tycho's Supernova Remnant This Chandra image reveals fascinating details of the turbulent debris created by a supernova explosion that was observed by the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe in the year 1572. The colors show different X - ray energies, with red, green, and blue representing low, medium and high energies, respectively. The image is cut off at the bottom because the southernmost region of the remnant fell outside the field of view of the detector. A shock wave produced by the expanding debris is outlined by the strikingly sharp blue circular arcs of twenty million degree Celsius gas seen on the outer rim. The stellar debris, which has a temperature of about ten million degrees and is visible only in X - rays, shows up as mottled yellow, green and red fingers of gas. Tycho's supernova remnant presents several interesting contrasts with the Cassiopeia A (Cas A) supernova remnant. The debris for Tycho is distributed in clumps rather than knots as in Cas A, and its outer shock wave can be seen in smooth and continuous arcs rather than being fragmented, as in Cas A. Also, no central point source is detected in Tycho, in contrast to Cas A. The absence of a central point source is consistent with other evidence that Tycho is a Type Ia supernova, which is thought to signal the detonation and destruction of a white dwarf star. Theory predicts that a white dwarf star will explode when infalling matter from a companion star increases the mass of the white dwarf beyond a critical mass limit, known as the Chandrasekhar limit. Observation Date September 20, 2000 Observation Time 13.4 hours Distance Estimate 7.500 light year
Brown dwarf around the red dwarf star Gliese 229 - Brown dwarf around red dwarf Gliese 229 - First false-colored image of a brown dwarf. With a mass of 20 to 50 times that of Jupiter, but of a diameter equivalent to the gas planet, GL229B, is orbiting around the red dwarf star Gliese 229, about 18 years - light from Earth in the constellation Lievre. On the left, the observation made from the ground in adaptive optics at Mount Palomar, October 27, 1994. On the right, the image obtained by the Hubble space telescope on November 17, 1995. These two false - color telescope images reveal the faintest object ever seen around a star beyond our Sun, and the first unambiguous detection of a brown dwarf. The brown dwarf, called GL229B, orbits the red dwarf star Gliese 229, located approximately 18 light - years away in the constellation Lepus. The brown dwarf is about 20 - 50 times the mass of Jupiter, but is so dense it is about the same diameter as Jupiter (80,000 miles). Brown dwarfs are a mysterious class of long - sought objects that form the same way stars do, by condensing out of a cloud of hydrogen gas. However, they do not accumulate enough mass to sustain nuclear fusion at their core, which make stars shine. [left] - The brown dwarf (center) was first observed in far red light October 27, 1994 using the adaptive optics device and a 60 - inch reflecting telescope on Palomar Mountain in California. Another year was required to confirm that the object was actually gravitationally bound to the companion star. GL229B is at least four billion miles from its companion star, roughly the separation between the planet Pluto and our Sun. Even though a cornograph on the detector masked most of the light from the star, which is off the left edge of the image, it is so bright relative to the brown dwarf the glare floods the detector. [right] - This image of the GL229B (center) was taken with Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Planetary Camera -
Planetary nebula NGC 6826 in Swan - Planetary nebula NGC 6826 in Cygnus - Planetary nebula NGC 6826 is located about 2000 years - light from Earth in the constellation Swan. A planetary nebula is a gas shell from a small late-life star whose heart collapsed to become a white dwarf and expelled the outer layers of its matter. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on January 27, 1996. NGC 6826's eye - like appearance is marred by two sets of blood - red “” fliers”” that lie horizontally across the image. The surrounding faint green “” white”” of the eye is believed to be gas that made up almost half of the star's mass for most of its life. The hot remnant star (in the center of the green oval) drives a fast wind into older material, forming a hot interior bubble which pushes the older gas ahead of it to form a bright rim. (The star is one of the brightest stars in any planetary.) NGC 6826 is 2,200 light - years away in the constellation Cygnus. The Hubble telescope observation was taken Jan. 27, 1996 with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera
Andromede Galaxy (M31) view in ultraviolet - The Andromeda galaxy seen in UV - This ultraviolet image is a mosaic of 10 images obtained by the GALEX satellite in September and October 2003. Regions of blue stars, young, warm and massive stars are clearly visible in the arms, where the stars are formed; in the center near the core, colder, orange-white, much older stars. The stars visible in the foreground belong to our Lactee Way. The GALEX observation of the large galaxy in Andromeda, Messier 31, was performed during September and October 2003. The image is a mosaic of 10 separate GALEX images combining the Far UV (colored blue) and Near UV detector (colored red) images together to make a color image of the sky almost six full moons across. The Andromeda galaxy is the most massive in the local group of galaxies, which includes our Milky Way, and is the nearest large galaxy to our own. The GALEX image shows blue regions of young, hot, high mass stars tracing out the spiral arms where star formation is occurring, and the central orange - white “” bulge””” of old, cooler stars formed long ago. The red stars in this image are foreground stars in our own Milky Way galaxy
