Earth at the end of Permian - Ring arcs over the Permian Earth - A ring of rocks and dust is orbiting the Earth. The massive continent below is Pangee and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is what Earth was supposed to look like at the end of Permian, about 260 million years ago, before the first dinosaurs appeared. This ring around the Earth was of earthly origin, constitutes debris thrown into orbit by collision with a meteorite or comet. Over time, these debris have either fallen or fallen back to Earth in a meteorite rain. A dusty ring arc orbits four thousand miles above Earth's equator. The massive continent below is Pangea and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is how the Earth may have appeared during the end of the Permian period, a time just prior to the appearance of the dinosaurs, when continental drift was pulling Pangea apart into the seven continents we know today. 260 million years ago the Earth may have been host to ring arcs similar to the incomplete rings that currently circumscribe the planet Neptune. Unlike Neptune's rings, the ring arcs around the Earth were of terrestrial origin, debris thrown into orbit by a collision with a large meteorite or comet. The debris consisted of tiny pebbles that were once molten droplets of ejecta, long since cooled in the vacuum of space. The orbit of the ring arc would eventually decay, returning the debris back to Earth as a shower of meteorites. This debris is found on Earth's surface today in the form of dark, glassy objects known as tektites
Planetary system around Trappist-1 - Artist's impressions of the TRAPPIST-1 planetary system: Artist's view of extrasolar planets around the red dwarf star TRAPPIST-1. At least seven exoplanets the size of the Earth are orbiting this star 40 light years ago in the constellation Aquarius. All could contain water. This artist's impression shows several of the planets orbiting the ultra-cool red dwarf star TRAPPIST-1. New observations, when combined with very sophisticated analysis, have now yielded good estimates of the densities of all seven of the Earth-sized planets and suggest that they are rich in volatile materials, probably water

Cassini - Huygens and Saturn - Cassini spacecraft at Saturn - Artist's view of the Cassini probe around Saturn. The Huygens European module is attached to the probe. The Cassini-Huygens probe was launched on 15 October 1997 and has been placed in orbit around Saturn since 1 July 2004. The great Cassini orbiter, with the Huygens probe still in place, prepares to slip through the ring plane of Saturn. Cassini - Huygens was launched from the earth on october 15 1997 and is orbiting Saturn system from july 1st 2004
Star HD 189733 and nebula planetary Dumbbell (M27) - A star field with HD 189733 and Dumbell nebula - Image centree on the star HD 189733 located 63 years ago - light in the constellation Petite Fox. Astronomers discovered around this star an exoplanet (HD 189733b). This gas planet a little bigger than Jupiter is very close to its star; this type of planet is called hot Jupiter. We detected the presence of mists in his atmosphere. To the right of this star is the planetary nebula Dumbbell (M27) located about 1400 years from Earth. A planetary nebula is a gas shell from a small late-life star whose heart collapsed to become a white dwarf and expelled the outer layers of its matter. A star field image showing the star HD 189733 (centre) with Dumbell nebula. Orbiting close to its parent star, is an extrasolar planet, HD 189733b, a 'hot - Jupiter' type of gas giant slightly larger than Jupiter. The observations provide clear evidence of the presence of hazes in its atmosphere. To the right of the star is the notable planetary nebula Messier 27. The Dumbbell Nebula (M27, NGC6853), is a planetary nebula located about 1400 light years from the earth in the constellation of Vulpecula. The nebula was formed when an evolved, red giant star ejected its outer envelope near the end of its lifetime

The cloud of Oort - Illustration - The Oort cloud. Artwork - The Oort Cloud is a vast body envelope orbiting well beyond the orbit of the planets of the solar system. Comets would come from that cloud. The Oort Cloud is a huge spherical cloud surrounding our Solar System. Extending about 30 trillion kilometers (18 trillion miles) from the Sun, it was first proposed in 1950 by Dutch astronomer Jan Oort. The vast distance of the Oort cloud is considered to be the outer edge of the Solar System where the Sun's influence ends. It contains billions of icy bodies and seems to be the birth place of comets
Mission New Worlds: The New Worlds mission is a space mission proposal being studied by NASA. Its concept is based on the association of a space telescope with a large occulter (starshade) which places in space a long distance from it (several tens of thousands of kilometres) and designed to block the light of the central star in order to observe its exoplanets. Observations could be made with an existing space telescope, such as the James-Webb Space Telescope (JWST) once launched. A space telescope observes planets orbiting a distant star whose glare has been blocked by a flower-shaped screen the size of a football field. In reality, the starshade would be almost as far from the telescope as the moon is from earth
Mars and Deimos - Illustration - Mars and Deimos - Illustration - Artist's view of Deimos, the smallest of Mars's two satellites. This is how Mars and its even smaller satellite Deimos might appear from a distance of about 100 miles from the surface of Deimos. Deimos is over Acidalia Planitia, an albedo feature that has been observed by Earth - bound astronomers since the 19th century. To the southwest are the fog - filled canyons of Valles Marineris, the westernmost of which are still in darkness. Beyond Mars, immediately to the left of its night side, is Phobos at a distance of 20,000 miles. The two bright objects in the lower left are the stars Beta Gruis and Al Nair in the southern constellation Grus. Like it's larger companion Phobos, Deimos does not possess enough mass to pull itself into a sphere; its shape instead is oblong with a length of about 10 miles and only 6 miles wide at its smallest dimension. Like Phobos, Deimos may be an asteroid long ago captured by Mars' gravity. Orbiting 14,600 miles above Mars' surface, Deimos completes one revolution every 30 hours

Artist's view of the asteroid 2060 Chiron: (2060) Chiron, also designed as 95P/Chiron, is a centaur type cometary asteroid, an ice body of 166 kilometres of diameter orbiting around the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. 2060 Chiron, also known as 95P/Chiron, is a minor planet in the outer Solar System, orbiting the Sun between Saturn and Uranus. Discovered in 1977 it was the first-identified member of a new class of objects now known as centaurs - bodies orbiting between the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt. Besides the four giant planets, Chiron and 10199 Chariklo, also a centaur, are the only other bodies in the Solar System known to have rings. Although it was initially called an asteroid and classified only as a minor planet with the designation “” 2060 Chiron””, it was later found to exhibit behavior typical of a comet. Today it is classified as both a minor planet and a comet, and is accordingly also known by the cometary designation “” 95P/Chiron””

Artist view of the Exoplanete Gliese 581c - Artwork of exoplanet Gliese 581c - Artist view of the Exoplanete Gliese 581c. Gliese 581c, with a radius of 1.5 times that of the Earth, is the first exoplanet gathering the necessary elements to imagine the existence of a possible extra-terrestrial life. In April 2007 the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland announced the discovery of a “super - earth”” extrasolar planet orbiting the red dwarf star Gliese 581. Dubbed Gliese 581 c, it's been called a super - earth because it is one of the few known extrasolar planets that has a mass near Earth's, and the only one to occupy its sun's “” habitable zone.”” This image of a rocky and variegated Gliese 581 c with an atmosphere and clouds is purely speculative
Futuristic advertising poster for tourism on Kepler-16 b - Illustration - Futuristic Advert for tourism on Kepler-16 b - Illustration: Advertising promoting tourism on Kepler-16 b. This exoplanet is orbiting in the habitable area of the Starsystem Kepler-16 (AB), an Algol-type binary star located at a distance of about 200 light years from the Sun in the constellation of Swan. An astronaut could contemplate a double sunset. Like Luke Skywalker's planet “” Tatooine””” in Star Wars, Kepler-16b orbits a pair of stars. Described here as a terrestrial planet, Kepler-16b might also be a gas giant like Saturn. Prospects for life on this unusual world aren't good, as it has a temperature similar to that of dry ice. But the discovery indicates that the movie's iconic double-sunset is anything but science fiction.
Detection of an exoplanet by microlens effect - Detection of an exoplanet: Gravitational microlensing - On the left, the observation of a distant star whose light is diluted. On the right, the light of this star is amplified by gravitational lens effect. The gravitational lens effect occurs when the gravitational field of a star acts as a magnifying glass by amplifying the light emitted by a farther star. This amplification is measurable, and when the foreground star is accompanied by a planet, a second peak of intensity in the life rays appears more weakly. Illustration showing at left the observation of faint light emitted by a distant star, at right, the light of the same star magnified by a gravitational lens. Microlensing occurs when the gravitational field of a star acts like a lens, magnifying the light of a distant background star. Possible planets orbiting the foreground star can cause detectable anomalies in the lensing event light curve
Mine sur un asteroide - Illustration - Mining base on double asteroid 90 Antiope - Illustration - Artist view une base minere installee sur l'asteroid double 90 Antiope. Some day a it may be worthwhile to mine resources from a distant asteroid, whether for raw materials for building an orbiting structure (cheaper than rocketing the materials from Earth's surface) or for some exotic material found only on a particular asteroid. This image is a bird's eye view of a mining settlement on the double asteroid 90 Antiope, located in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. These two asteroids are about the same size - - 70 miles across - - and orbit around a common center like two ends of a barbell. The gap separating the two bodies is only about 40 miles. The extremely low surface gravity would permit the construction of delicate structures, such as the solar power array silhouetted against the sunny side of the sister asteroid, and would make it relatively easy to transport mined material off the surface

Planetary nebula NGC 6543 in the Dragon/HST - This NASA Hubble Space Telescope image shows one of the most complex planetary nebulae ever seen, NGC 6543, nicknamed the “Cat's Eye Nebula.””” Hubble reveals surprisingly intricate structures including concentric gas shells, jets of high - speed gas and unusual shock - induced knots of gas. Estimated to be 1,000 years old, the nebula is a visual “” fossil record”” of the dynamics and late evolution of a dying star. A preliminary interpretation suggests that the star might be a double - star system. The dynamical effects of two stars orbiting one another most easily explains the intricate structures, which are much more complicated than features seen in most planetary nebulae. (The two stars are too close together to be individually resolved by Hubble, and instead, appear as a single point of light at the center of the nebula.) According to this model, a fast “” stellar wind””” of gas blown off the central star created the elongated shell of dense, glowing gas. This structure is embedded inside two larger lobes of gas blown off the star at an earlier phase. These lobes are “” pinched”” by a ring of denser gas, presumably ejected along the orbital plane of the binary companion. The suspected companion star also might be responsible for a pair of high - speed jets of gas that lie at right angles to this equatorial ring. If the companion were pulling in material from a neighboring star, jets escaping along the company's rotation axis could be produced. These jets would explain several puzzling features along the periphery of the gas lobes. Like a stream of water hitting a sand pile, the jets compress gas ahead of them, creating the “” curlicue”” features and bright arcs near the outer edge of the lobes. The twin jets are now pointing in different directions than these features. This suggests the jets are wobbling, or precessing, and turning on and off episodically.
