Apollo - Soyuz: Soyuz ship - Apollo - Soyuz: Soyuz above earth - The Soyuz ship seen from the window of Apollo. 17/07/1975. This scene was photographed with a handheld 70 mm camera from a rendezvous window of the American Apollo spacecraft in Earth orbit during the Apollo - Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) mission. It shows the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft contrasted against a black - sky background with the Earth's horizon below. ASTP was a cooperative space mission between the United States and the USSR. The goals of ASTP were to test the ability of American and Soviet spacecraft to rendezvous and dock in space and to open the doors to possible international rescue missions and future collaboration on manned spaceflights. This artist's concept depicts the Apollo - Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), the first international docking of the U.S. ' s Apollo spacecraft and the U.S.S.R. ' s Soyuz spacecraft in space. The Soyuz spacecraft, with Cosmonauts Alexei Leonov and Valeri Kubasov aboard, was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome near Tyuratam in the Kazakh, Soviet Socialist Republic, at 8:20 a.m. (EDT) on July 15, 1975. The Apollo spacecraft, with Astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald Slayton aboard, was launched from Launch Complex 39B, Kennedy Space Center, Florida, at 3:50 p.m. (EDT) on July 15, 1975. The Primary objectives of the ASTP were achieved. They performed spacecraft rendezvous, docking and undocking, conducted intervehicular crew transfer, and demonstrated the interaction of U.S. and U.S.S.R. control centers and spacecraft crews. The mission marked the last use of a Saturn launch vehicle

Apollo - Soyuz: decolving the Saturn 1B rocket - Apollo - Soyuz: Saturn 1B lift off - Decolving the American rocket with the Apollo module on board and astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald Slayton. 15/07/1975. Liftoff of the Saturn IB launch vehicle (SA-210), for the Apollo/Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) mission, from the Launch Complex 39B, Kennedy Space Center. The Apollo - Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) was the first international docking of the U.S. ' s Apollo spacecraft and the U.S.S.R. ' s Soyuz spacecraft in space. The objective of the ASTP mission was to provide the basis for a standardized international system for docking of manned spacecraft.

AS-204, the fourth Saturn IB launch vehicle, awaits its its January 22, 1968 liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida for the unmanned Apollo 5 mission. Primary mission objectives included the verification of the Apollo Lunar Model's (LM) ascent and descent propulsion systems and an evaluation of the S - IVB stage instrument unit performance. In all, nine Saturn IB flights were made, ending with the Apollo - Soyuz Test Project in July 1975

Back to the Moon: MPCV module - Artist view - The MPCV spacecraft in space - The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) above Earth. This capsule should be able to take a crew of six astronauts to the moon and could be used to take men to Mars. The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) is a spacecraft project currently being developed by Lockheed Martin for NASA. Based on specifications and tests already performed for the Orion spacecraft. It was announced by NASA on 24 May 2011. The next generation Deep Space Vehicle (DSV) may be flying within the next decade. Like the Apollo Command/Service Modules which last flew in 1973, the DSV will be a crewed spacecraft capable of independently navigating beyond Earth orbit to the Moon and beyond
Wernher von Braun - 1964 - Wernher von Braun - 1964 - Wernher von Braun (1912 - 1977), German engineer, inventor of V2 missiles and father of the Saturn V rocket that took the first men to the Moon. He is photographed here in 1964 in his office as director of Nasa's Marshall Space Center. Dr. Wernher von Braun served as Marshall Space Flight Center's first director from July 1, 1960 until January 27, 1970. Following World War II, Dr. von Braun and his German colleagues arrived in the United States under Project Paperclip to continue their rocket development work. Under von Braun's leadership, Marshall developed the Saturn V launch vehicle which took Apollo astronauts to the moon. This photo depicts by Braun in his office at MSFC

The next generation Deep Space Vehicle's (DSV) crew capsule, aka Command Module, will be similar to the Apollo Command Module in shape, however it will be somewhat larger, with enough room - depending upon the mission - for as many as 6 astronauts versus Apollo's three. The DSV would also supplement its electrical power with two arrays of solar voltaics which would aid in extending its mission endurance beyond Apollo's 14 day limit

Permanent station between the Earth and the Moon - Artist view - Lunar cycler at apogee - Artist view - Lunar Cycler is a space station placed in orbit between the Earth and the Moon whose trajectory would alternate between the Moon and the Earth. Once positioned in orbit, this gravitational assistance vessel would use very little fuel. This project would make a permanent link between the two stars. A lunar cycler has reached its furthest orbital point from the Earth - the apogee - and is rounding the far side of the Moon to begin its fall back towards Earth. At apogee the lunar cycler is about 300 thousand miles from the Earth and 50 thousand miles beyond the orbit of the Moon (further from Earth than any human has ventured yet). If frequent manned trips to the Moon become a reality, the earlier “” throw-away”” technologies of the Apollo lunar missions will be impractical for the long term. More efficient and reusable systems will need to be developed in order to minimize the labor and resources required for these extraordinary voyages. A journey to the Moon can be broken down into three basic tasks: transfer between the Earth's surface and Earth orbit, transfer between Earth orbit and lunar orbit, and transfer between lunar orbit and the Moon's surface. While the simplest solution may be a single vehicle that could do all three, no technology today or in the foreseeable future can meet all these needs. One solution would be to dedicate separate vehicles for each the three tasks. A reusable space shuttle would lift explorers off the Earth's surface, a dedicated and reusable lunar shuttle would deliver explorers to the Moon's surface and back, and in between there would be a kind of orbital way station. One such way station is known as an orbital cycler. An orbital cycler is a vehicle that's in a permanent orbit around two celestial masses. In the case of a lunar cycler, the orbit would include both the Eart
