Hubble ultra deep field - In the southern constellation of the furnace, the Hubble space telescope posed 270h to obtain this image of the distant universe. Approximately 10,000 galaxies distant from 5 to 13 billion light years are visible in this image. This view of nearly 10,000 galaxies is the deepest visible - light image of the cosmos. Called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, this galaxy - studded view represents a “” deep”” core sample of the universe, cutting across billions of light - years. The snapshot includes galaxies of various ages, sizes, shapes, and colors. The smallest, reddest galaxies, about 100, may be among the most distant known, existing when the universe was just 800 million years old. The nearest galaxies - the larger, brighter, well - defined spirals and ellipticals - thrived about 1 billion years ago, when the cosmos was 13 billion years old. In ground - based photographs, the patch of sky in which the galaxies reside (just one - tenth the diameter of the full Moon) is largely empty. Located in the constellation Fornax, the region is so empty that only a handful of stars within the Milky Way galaxy can be seen in the image. In this image, blue and green correspond to colors that can be seen by the human eye, such as hot, young, blue stars and the glow of Sun - like stars in the disks of galaxies. Red represents near - infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye, such as the red glow of dust - enshrouded galaxies. The image required 800 exposures taken over the course of 400 Hubble orbits around Earth. The total amount of exposure time was 11.3 days, taken between Sept. 24, 2003 and Jan. 16, 2004

Spiral Galaxy NGC 2397 - Galaxy Spiral NGC 2397 - The galaxy NGC 2397 is a classic spiral galaxy located about 60 million years ago - light from Earth in the southern constellation of Flying Fish. The central part houses old yellow and red stars while new stars form in the outer arms. This image obtained by the space telescope on 14 October 2006 shows the brightest of these young blue stars. The 2006bc supernova, which exploded in March 2006, is also visible near the central region, while its eclat was decreasing (box). Located nearly 60 million light - years away from Earth, the galaxy NGC 2397 is typical of most spirals, with mostly older, yellow and red stars in its central portion, while star formation continues in the outer, bluer spiral arms. The brightest of these young, blue stars can be seen individually in this high resolution view from the Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). One typical feature of this Hubble image is the view of supernova SN 2006bc taken when its brightness was on the decrease (insert). SN 2006bc was discovered in March 2006. The images were obtained on 14 October 2006 with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) through three different colour filters (blue, green and near - infrared)
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 1300 in Eridan - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300 in Eridanus - The galaxy NGC1300 is located about 60 million years ago - light and extends over about 85 000 years - light. This image was obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope in September 2004. NGC 1300 is considered to be prototypical of barred spiral galaxies. Barred spirals differ from normal spiral galaxies in that the arms of the galaxy do not spiral all the way into the center, but are connected to the two ends of a straight bar of stars containing the nucleus at its center. At Hubble's resolution, a myriad of fine details, some of which have never before been seen, is seen throughout the galaxy's arms, disk, bulge, and nucleus. Blue and red supergiant stars, star clusters, and star - forming regions are well resolved across the spiral arms, and dust lanes trace out fine structures in the disk and bar. Numerous more distant galaxies are visible in the background, and are seen even through the densest regions of NGC 1300. The image was constructed from exposures taken in September 2004 by the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard Hubble in four filters. Starlight and dust are seen in blue, visible, and infrared light. Bright star clusters are highlighted in red by their associated emission from glowing hydrogen gas. The galaxy lies roughly 69 million light - years away (21 megaparsecs) in the direction of the constellation Eridanus

Spiral galaxy NGC 2997 in the Pneumatic Machine - Spiral galaxy NGC 2997 in Antlia - NGC 2997 is a spiral galaxy distant about 55 million years - light. NGC 2997 seems to be a galaxy seen from the front but in reality is inclined by about 45 degrees. Its arms are home to large star-forming regions while its core is surrounded by much older yellow stars. The disc of NGC 2997 is inclined at about 45 degrees to our line of sight, revealing its internal structure and giving the galaxy an oval appearance. Like most spirals, the galaxy has two prominent spiral arms, which appear to originate in the yellow nucleus, are peppered with bright red blobs of ionised hydrogen which are similar to regions of star formation in our own Milky Way. Within these gas clouds are produced the hot blue stars which generate most of the light in the arms of the galaxy. A much older population of yellowish stars are concentrated around the nucleus. NGC 2997 is located about 55 million light year from us

Within these gas clouds are produced the hot blue stars which generate most of the light in the arms of the galaxy. A much older population of yellowish stars are concentrated around the nucleus. NGC 2997 is located in the southern constellation of Antlia, about 55 million light - years from us

Barree spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in the constellation Peacock - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 6744 in Pavo - The galaxy NGC 6744 is located about 25 million years ago - light from Earth. The morphology of this galaxy is very similar to that of our galaxy, the Lactee Way. Image obtained from the 3.9m telescope of Siding Spring, Australia. This beautiful galaxy is about 25 million light years away in the direction of Pavo, a constellation of the southern hemisphere winter. NGC 6744 is believed to one of the most Milky Way - like of all the nearby spirals, with fluffy (flocculent) spiral arms and a large and distinctly elongated nucleus. It also has other similarities to the Milky Way that are not visible here (but seen on a deep image) with at least one distorted companion galaxy superficially similar to one of the Magellanic Clouds. The CCD chip that made this picture at the prime focus of the AAT (Siding Spring) covers about 7 arc minutes of sky. But the galaxy has a much bigger angular size than this, so a series of four overlapping exposures were made in red, green and blue light. Each 3 - color set was made into a color picture and the four images merged to produce the (almost) seamless image seen here
Distant galaxies in the Fornax constellation - Distant galaxies in the Fornax constellation - Image of distant galaxies obtained by the Hubble space telescope in the constellation Forneau in September 2003. This image represents a typical view of our distant universe. In taking this picture, Hubble is looking down a long corridor of galaxies stretching billions of light - years distant in space, corresponding to looking billions of years back in time. The field shown in this picture covers a relatively small patch of sky, a fraction of the area of the full moon, yet it is richly populated with a variety of galaxy types. A handful of large fully formed galaxies are scattered throughout the image. These galaxies are easy to see because they are relatively close to us. Several of the galaxies are spirals with flat disks that are oriented edge - on or face - on to our line of sight, or somewhere in between. Elliptical galaxies and more exotic galaxies with bars or tidal tails are also visible. Many galaxies that appear small in this image are simply farther away. These visibly smaller galaxies are so distant that their light has taken billions of years to reach us. One red galaxy to the lower left of the bright central star is acting as a lens to a large galaxy directly behind it. Light from the farther galaxy is bent around the nearby galaxy's nucleus to form a distorted arc. Sprinkled among the thousands of galaxies in this image are at least a dozen foreground stars that reside in our Milky Way Galaxy. The brightest of these foreground stars is the red object in the center of the image. The stars are easily discernable from galaxies because of their diffraction spikes, long cross - hair - like features that look like they are emanating from the centers of the stars. Diffraction spikes are an image artifact caused by starlight traveling through the telescope's optical system. This image is a composite of multiple exposures of a single field taken by
Barree spiral galaxy NGC 2146 in the Giraffe - Barred spiral galaxy NGC 2146 in Camelopardalis - NGC 2146 is a barree spiral galaxy located about 70 million years ago - light from Earth in the constellation Giraffe (Camelopardalis). Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). NGC 2146 is classified as a barred spiral due to its shape, but the most distinctive feature is the dusty spiral arm that has looped in front of the galaxy's core as seen from our perspective. The forces required to pull this structure out of its natural shape and twist it up to 45 degrees are colossal. The most likely explanation is that a neighbouring galaxy is gravitationally perturbing it and distorting the orbits of many of NGC 2146's stars. It is probable that we are currently witnessing the end stages of a process which has been occurring for tens of millions of years. NCG 2146 is undergoing intense bouts of star formation, to such an extent that it is referred to as a starburst galaxy. This is a common state for barred spirals, but the extra gravitational disruption that NGC 2146 is enduring no doubt exacerbates the situation, compressing hydrogen - rich nebulae and triggering stellar birth. Measuring about 80 000 light - years from end to end, NGC 2146 is slightly smaller than the Milky Way. It lies approximately 70 million light - years distant in the faint northern constellation of Camelopardalis (The Giraffe). Although it is fairly easy to see with a moderate - sized telescope as a faint elongated blur of light it was not spotted until 1876 when the German astronomer Friedrich Winnecke found it visually using just a 16 cm telescope. This picture was created from images taken with the Wide Field Channel of Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Images through a near - infrared filter (F814W, coloured blue and orange/brown) were combined with images taken in a filter that isolates the glow from hydrogen gas (F658N, coloured red). An additional green colour
Field of distant galaxies - Distant galaxies - Image of distant galaxies obtained by the Hubble space telescope in the furnace constellation. 7500 galaxies, some of which are more than 13 billion years old - light are visible on this image. Some closer galaxies also appear. This image covers a field equivalent to one third of a full moon. This image, taken by Nasa's Hubble Space Telescope, was made from mosaics taken in September and October 2009 with the newly installed Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and in 2004 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). The view covers a portion of the southern field of a large galaxy census called the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), a deep - sky study by several observatories to trace the formation and evolution of galaxies. The final image combines a broad range of colors, from the ultraviolet, through visible light, and into the near - infrared. The image reveals galaxy shapes that appear increasingly chaotic at each earlier epoch, as galaxies grew through accretion, collisions, and mergers. The galaxies range from the mature spirals and ellipticals in the foreground, to smaller, fainter, irregularly shaped galaxies, most of which are farther away, and therefore existed farther back in time. These smaller galaxies are considered the building blocks of the larger galaxies we see today. Astronomers are using this multi - color panorama to trace many details of galaxy assembly over cosmic time, including the star - formation rate in galaxies, the rate of mergers among galaxies, and the abundance of weak active galactic nuclei. The image shows a rich tapestry of 7,500 galaxies stretching back through most of the university's history. The closest galaxies seen in the foreground emitted their observed light about a billion years ago. The farthest galaxies, a few of the very faint red specks, are seen as they appeared more than 13 billion years ago, or roughly 650 million years ago,
