India 70 million years ago - Artist's view - Late Cretaceous India - India seen in the upper cretace about 70 million years ago. The north is upstairs. To the west, Madagascar separates from India. This is how the Indian subcontinent may have appeared 70 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. Looking north, immediately to India's west is the island continent of Madagascar and further west is the eastern coast of southern Africa. In the distant past India and Madagascar formed a single continent, however India was part of a separate tectonic plate that subsequently began to drift northward. This northward motion (covering about 8 inches per year making it among the fastest on the Earth's lithosphere) split India from Madagascar and carried it north across the Tethys Ocean until it collided with Eurasia about 50 to 35 million years ago. This collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates joined India to South Asia and created the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya Mountains, a process which is still evolving to this day

Moon: Aristarchus crater - Moon: Aristarchus crater - Apollo 15 - The Aristarchus crater and the Schroeter valley. Image obtained from the Apollo 15 control module. An oblique view of Schroeter's Valley and the crater Aristarchus, as photographed by the Fairchild metric camera in the Scientific Instrumentation Module (SIM) bay of the Apollo 15 Command and Service Module (CSM) in lunar orbit. This view is looking south. The large, bright - appearing crater to the left of the head of meandering Schroeter's Valley is Aristarchus, the center of which is located at 48 degrees west longitude and 214 degrees north latitude. The crater Aristarchus approximately 35 kilometers (about 21.75 statute miles) in diameter. The head of Schroeter's Valley, a sinuous rille in the Aristarchus Plateau in the Ocean of Storms, is called Cobra Head. Herodotus the crater just above and to the right of Cobra Head in upper center. The three - inch mapping camera was one of eight lunar orbital science experiments mounted in the SIM bay
Satellite ENVISAT - Artist's impression of Envisat - Artist's view of the cover of the Ariane 5 rocket opening to put the European ENVISAT satellite into orbit around the Earth. Launched on March 1, 2002, it is the largest scientific Earth observation satellite ever designed, observing the Earth in visible, infrared and radar. Artwork showing the Ariane 5 fairing ejection before Envisat separation from the upper stage. Launched in 2002, Envisat is the largest Earth Observation spacecraft ever built. It carries ten sophisticated optical and radar instruments to provide continuous observation and monitoring of the Earth's land, atmosphere, oceans and ice caps

Earthrise and Moon seen since LRO. 10/2015 - Earthrise and Moon as seen from LRO. 10/2015 - Earthrise above the Moon seen from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Composite of images obtained on October 12, 2015. Nasa's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) captured a unique view of Earth from the spacecraft's vantage point in orbit around the moon. In this composite image we see Earth appear to rise over the lunar horizon from the viewpoint of the spacecraft, with the center of the Earth just off the coast of Liberia (at 4.04 degrees North, 12.44 degrees West). The large tan area in the upper right is the Sahara Desert, and just beyond is Saudi Arabia. The Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America are visible to the left. On the moon, we get a glimpse of the crater Compton, which is located just beyond the eastern limb of the moon, on the lunar farside. LRO was launched on June 18, 2009, and has collected a treasure trove of data with its seven powerful instruments, making an invaluable contribution to our knowledge about the moon. LRO experiences 12 earthrises every day; however the spacecraft is almost always busy imaging the lunar surface so only rarely does an opportunity arise such that its camera instrument can capture a view of Earth. Occasionally LRO points off into space to acquire observations of the extremely thin lunar atmosphere and perform instrument calibration measurements. During these movements sometimes Earth (and other planets) pass through the camera's field of view and dramatic images such as the one shown here are acquired. This image was composed from a series of images taken Oct. 12, when LRO was about 83 miles (134 kilometers) above the moon's farside crater Compton. Capturing an image of the Earth and moon with LRO's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) instrument is a complicated task. First the spacecraft must be rolled to the side (in this case 67 degrees), then the spacecraft slews with the direction of travel

Earth's atmosphere and setting sun - Earth's atmosphere and setting sun - Earth's atmosphere seen at sunset from the International Space Station (ISS) on May 25, 2010. This spectacular image of sunset on the Indian Ocean was taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The image presents an edge - on, or limb view, of the Earth's atmosphere as seen from orbit. The Earth's curvature is visible along the horizon line, or limb, that extends across the image from center left to lower right. Above the darkened surface of the Earth, a brilliant sequence of colors roughly denotes several layers of the atmosphere. Deep oranges and yellows appear in the troposphere, which extends from the Earth's surface to 6 - 20 km high. This layer contains over 80 percent of the mass of the atmosphere and almost all of the water vapor, clouds, and precipitation. Several dark cloud layers are visible within this layer. Variations in the colors are due mainly to varying concentrations of either clouds or aerosols (airborne particles or droplets). The pink to white region above the clouds appears to be the stratosphere; this atmospheric layer generally has little or no clouds and extends up to approximately 50 km above the Earth's surface. Above the stratosphere, blue layers mark the upper atmosphere (including the mesosphere, thermosphere, ionosphere, and exosphere) as it gradually fades into the blackness of outer space. The ISS was located over the southern Indian Ocean when this picture was taken, with the astronaut observer looking towards the west. Astronauts aboard the ISS see 16 sunrises and sunsets per day due to their high orbital velocity (greater than 28,000 km per hour). The multiple chances for photography are fortunate, as at that speed each sunrise or sunset event only lasts a few seconds. This astronaut photograph was acquired on May 25, 2010
Southern Aurora observed from space station - Aurora Australis seen from space - Southern Aurora observed from the International Space Station (ISS) on 29 May 2010. Aurora australis seen from the International Space Station (ISS) on May 29, 2010. The ISS was located over the Southern Indian Ocean at an altitude of 350 km, with the astronaut observer most likely looking towards Antarctica (not visible) and the South Pole. The aurora has a sinuous ribbon shape that separates into discrete spots near the lower right corner of the image. While the dominant coloration of the aurora is green, there are faint suggestions of red photon emission as well (light fuscia tones at image center left). Dense cloud cover is dimly visible below the aurora. The curvature of the Earth's horizon, or limb, is clearly visible as is the faint blue line of the upper atmosphere directly above at image top center. Several stars appear as bright pinpoints against the blackness of space at image top right
Earth's atmosphere and noctiluque clouds - Earth's atmosphere and noctilucent clouds - View of the Earth's atmosphere with night clouds photographs from the International Space Station on July 22, 2008. These clouds look like cirrus but are much higher, between 75 and 90 km from the Earth's surface. Polar Mesospheric Clouds (also known as noctilucent clouds) are transient, upper atmospheric phenomena observed usually in the summer months at high latitudes (greater than 50 degrees) of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. They are bright and cloudlike in appearance while in deep twilight. They are illuminated by sunlight when the lower layers of the atmosphere are in the darkness of the Earth's shadow. This image was acquired at an altitude of just over 200 miles in the pre - dawn hours of July 22, 2008 as the International Space Station was passing over western Mongolia in central Asia. The dark horizon of the Earth appears below with some layers of the lower atmosphere already illuminated. The higher, bluish - colored clouds look much like wispy cirrus clouds which can be found in the troposphere as high as 60,000 feet. However noctilucent clouds, as seen here, are observed in the mesosphere at altitudes of 250,000 to 280,000 feet. Astronaut observations of Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMC) over northern Asia in June and July are not uncommon
Shuttle Columbia STS-1 above Earth - Space shuttle Columbia above Earth. 04/1981 - View of the cargo bay of Shuttle Columbia during its inaugural voyage in April 1981. On the craft's maiden voyage, the crew of space shuttle Columbia took this image that showcases the blackness of space and a blue and white Earth, as well as the cargo bay and aft section of the shuttle. The image was photographed through the flight deck's aft windows. In the lower right corner is one of the vehicle's radiator panels. The pentagon - shaped object in the upper left is glare caused by window reflection. STS - 1, Colombia's maiden voyage, launched on April 12, 1981, and was the inaugural flight in the Space Shuttle Program
Sprite and Thunderstorm seen from Space - Red Sprites and Thunderstorm seen from space: A sprite (upper left, in the atmosphere) seen from the International Space Station (ISS) in August 2015. This electric discharge rises 100 km above the surface of the Earth - The Moon is the bright spot in the sky, to the right of the sprite. Lights from Dallas, Texas appear in the foreground - This photo shows the spring's tendrils reaching as much as 100 kilometers above Earth's surface. Sprites are major electrical discharges, but they are not lightning in the usual sense. Instead, they are a cold plasma phenomenon without the extremely hot temperatures of lightning that we see underneath thunderstorms. Red sprites are more like the discharge of a fluorescent tube. Bursts of sprite energy are thought to occur during most large thunderstorm events. They were first photographed in 1989
Artemis communication satellite - Artemis satellite communication. Artwork - Artist's view of the European satellite Artemis (Advanced Relay and Technology Mission). Communication and relay satellite for other satellites, it was launched in July 2001. Built by ESA with an industrial team led by Italy's Alenia Spazio, Artemis carries three payloads plus a number of experiments developed to demonstrate new telecommunications technologies. The L - band Land Mobile (LLM) payload provides relay for two - way voice and data communications between fixed Earth stations and land mobiles - trucks, trains or cars - anywhere in Europe and North Africa. LLM is also broadcasting corrective GPS - like navigation signals for the European Global Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) programme, Europe's first satellite navigation system and a forerunner to the Galileo global navigation system. The other two primary payloads are designed to provide direct high data rate communications links between satellites and with ground stations in Europe. The Semiconductor laser Inter - satellite Link Experiment (SILEX) sends and receives data over a laser beam through an optical terminal equipped with a telescope. It has successfully been used with other terminals onboard France's Spot 4 remote sensing satellite or at a ground - based observatory on the Pico de Teide, in Tenerife, Canary Islands. The S/Ka - band Data Relay (SKDR) terminal provides high data rate communication links with low Earth orbiting satellites like Envisat, and will be used for communications with the Columbus laboratory onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The 3,106 - kg Artemis was launched on July 12, 2001, atop an Ariane 5G vehicle (V142) from the Guiana Space Centre, Europe's space port, in French Guiana. An anomaly during the upper stage burn resulted in a performance shortfall and Artemis had to use its onboard propellant and experimental ion thrusters to reach its final geostationary orbit. It

Saturn and Titan - Illustration - Saturn from Titan orbit - The planet Saturn seen from the orbit of its Titan satellite. This is how Saturn and Titan might look from a position in orbit around Titan. While in reality Saturn is vastly larger than Titan, it appears smaller here because Titan's orbit puts Saturn at a distance of about 700 thousand miles. Sunlight filtering through Titan's upper atmospheric haze - - extending over 300 miles above the surface - - gives a bluish cast to its limb

Saturn and satellites seen by the Hubble space telescope - Saturn rings edge - on with satellites - Saturn observed by the Hubble space telescope on February 24, 2009 when the Earth is in the same plane as the rings, seen by the slice. This phenomene occurs every 15 years. On the top image, the largest satellite, Titan, projects its shadow on the planet and three satellites are visible on the left: Mimas and its shadow are discernable on Saturn's left blade, on the left, above the rings, Dione is clearly visible, and on the left, the Enceladus satellite. The image in the center shows the satellites Enceladus and Dione that cast their shadow on the west (left) side of Saturn, Titan in the upper right, and Mimas on the eastern edge of Saturn. In the image below, Dione and his shadow pass to the center of Saturn, above Enceladus and its shadow. Titan is on Saturn's eastern blade, Mimas is right above the rings. This sequence of images captures the parade of several of Saturn's moons transiting the face of the gas giant planet. This is a rare event because the rings are tilted edge on to Earth every 15 years. The top frame captures the giant moon Titan and its shadow near Saturn's northern polar hood. Tiny Mimas and its shadow have just entered the left limb of Saturn, slightly above the rings. To the far left off the disk, Dione, the brightest of the icy moons in this view - and Enceladus, fainter and farther to the left - can easily be seen just above the rings. In the center frame, Dione and Enceladus can be seen near the western limb of Saturn, while Titan's shadow is off the limb, and Mimas is on the right most limb, its shadow also now off the limb. In the bottom frame, Dione and its shadow are centered above Enceladus and its shadow. Titan is now off the right limb. This picture sequence was taken with Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on February 24, 2009, when Saturn was at a distance of roughly 775 million m

Neptune - Voyager 2 - Image of Neptune obtained by the Voyager 2 probe on August 14, 1989 at 14.8 million km from the planet. Neptune has an equatorial diameter of about 49,000 kilometres. Its blue color is due to the abundance of methane in its atmosphere. On this photo, on the right, the Great Dark Spot, which is the size of the Earth where winds are blowing at 300 m/s. This spot has now disappeared but other dark spots have been detected since then. This contrast enhanced color photograph of Neptune was produced from images taken through the orange, green, and violet filters of the narrow angle camera. As Voyager 2 approaches Neptune, rapidly increasing image resolution is revealing striking new details in the planet's atmosphere, and this picture shows features as small as a few hundred kilometers in extent. Bright, wispy “” cirrus - type”” clouds are seen overlying the Great Dark Spot (GDS) at its southern (lower) margin and over its northwest (upper left) boundary. This is the first evidence that the GDS lies lower in the atmosphere than these bright clouds, which have remained in its vicinity for several months. Increasing detail in global banding, and the south polar can also be seen. A smaller dark spot at high southern latitudes is dimly visible near the limb at lower left
