Boat from CSS Alabama announcing the surrender and asking for assistance during the Battle of Cherbourg in 1864. CSS Alabama had captured or destroyed dozens of Union merchant ships, but had been pursued by USS Kearsage for two years. USS Kearsage finally caught up as CSS Alabama was being repaired in France, and USS Kearsage's iron armour allowed her to sink CSS Alabama in the resulting battle. Taken from 'Battles and Leaders of the Civil War', vol. IV, ed. Robert Underwood Johnson & Clarence Clough Buel, published by the Century Co in New York, 1888, p.623.
