Large and Small Magellan Clouds - Large and Small Magellanic clouds - These two irregular galaxies are close to our galaxy. Visible in the southern hemisphere, they are located approximately 160,000 (Grand Cloud, right) and 240,000 light years (Small Cloud, left). The Magellanic Clouds are the nearest galaxies to the Milky Way, about 170,000 and 240,000 light years distant respectively. They are in the far southern sky, practically invisible from northern latitudes, and their low surface brightness makes them difficult to see unless they are high in the sky. Both Magellanic Clouds are less than 25 degrees from the South Celestial Pole and are visible at some time on any clear, dark night from Siding Spring, where this picture was taken. To the dark adapted eye the Magellanic Clouds look like detached pieces of the Milky Way, but this apparent detachment is misleading because both are in orbit around it. Although the Magellanic Clouds are separate galaxies they are interacting with each other and with the Milky Way itself. Already the SMC has been substantially disrupted by this process, and the LMC distorted. Eventually the galaxies will merge with each other and with the Milky Way itself

Apollo 8: lunar craters - Moon craters seen from Apollo 8 - View of Goclenius crateres (foreground), Colombo A and Magelhaens from the Apollo 8 module in December 1968. This oblique view of the lunar surface was taken from the Apollo 8 spacecraft looking southward toward Goclenius and other large craters near 45 degrees east longitude and 10 degrees south latitude in the Sea of Fertility. Goclenius, the crater in the foreground with a rille - broken flat floor, is about 70 kilometers (45 statute miles) in diameter. One rille, approximately horizontal in this view, crosses both crater rims and the central peak, and, on adjoining Apollo 8 photographs, can be traced several kilometers across the mare surface beyond the high crater wall. In the background, the two large craters with smooth floors are Colombo A (left) and Magelhaens. Magelhaens A, the crater with the irregular floor, is about 35 kilometers (20 statute miles) in diameter
Horsehead Nebula (B33) in Orion - Horsehead nebula in Orion - The horse head nebula, Barnard 33, is a dark nebula located in front of the IC 434 emission nebula about 1500 years - light of the Earth in the constellation Orion. Lower left is the reflexion nebula, NGC 2023. This curious dark nebula is one of the best - known images in astronomy, probably because of its chance likeness to a recognisable form. The horse - head shape is an extension of a large cloud of dust which fills the lower part (east) of the picture and hides the light of stars beyond. The outer surface of the dusty gas (IC 434) runs roughly north - south and is illuminated by sigma Orionis (off the top of the picture) which causes the hydrogen there to fluoresce, outlining the horse - head shape. The diffuse haze to the left of the image (north) is scattered light from the bright star zeta Orionis. Though conspicuous here, the Horsehead is very difficult to see visually, even with a large telescope. A bright star is partially enveloped in the dust cloud and its scattered light is seen as the large, irregular blue reflection nebula, NGC 2023. All these objects are about 1500 light years distant
