Earthrise and Moon seen since LRO. 10/2015 - Earthrise and Moon as seen from LRO. 10/2015 - Earthrise above the Moon seen from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Composite of images obtained on October 12, 2015. Nasa's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) captured a unique view of Earth from the spacecraft's vantage point in orbit around the moon. In this composite image we see Earth appear to rise over the lunar horizon from the viewpoint of the spacecraft, with the center of the Earth just off the coast of Liberia (at 4.04 degrees North, 12.44 degrees West). The large tan area in the upper right is the Sahara Desert, and just beyond is Saudi Arabia. The Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America are visible to the left. On the moon, we get a glimpse of the crater Compton, which is located just beyond the eastern limb of the moon, on the lunar farside. LRO was launched on June 18, 2009, and has collected a treasure trove of data with its seven powerful instruments, making an invaluable contribution to our knowledge about the moon. LRO experiences 12 earthrises every day; however the spacecraft is almost always busy imaging the lunar surface so only rarely does an opportunity arise such that its camera instrument can capture a view of Earth. Occasionally LRO points off into space to acquire observations of the extremely thin lunar atmosphere and perform instrument calibration measurements. During these movements sometimes Earth (and other planets) pass through the camera's field of view and dramatic images such as the one shown here are acquired. This image was composed from a series of images taken Oct. 12, when LRO was about 83 miles (134 kilometers) above the moon's farside crater Compton. Capturing an image of the Earth and moon with LRO's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) instrument is a complicated task. First the spacecraft must be rolled to the side (in this case 67 degrees), then the spacecraft slews with the direction of travel

Back to the Moon: the MPCV module in lunar orbit - Artist view - The MPCV spacecraft in lunar orbit - The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) orbit around the Moon. This capsule should be able to take a crew of six astronauts to the moon and could be used to take men to Mars. The Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) is a spacecraft project currently being developed by Lockheed Martin for NASA. Based on specifications and tests already performed for the Orion spacecraft. It was announced by NASA on 24 May 2011. The next generation Deep Space Vehicle's (DSV) crew capsule, aka Command Module, will be similar to the Apollo Command Module in shape, however it will be somewhat larger, with enough room - depending upon the mission - for as many as 6 astronauts versus Apollo's three. The DSV would also supplement its electrical power with two arrays of solar voltaics which would aid in extending its mission endurance beyond Apollo's 14 day limit

Exploring the Moon in the 21st Century - Illustration - Lunar exploration in the 21st century - Astronauts are preparing a rover teleguide to drill the surface of the Moon to find exploitable resources. In the background, a permanent habitat allowing astronauts to live several weeks in this hostile environment. Lunar prospectors prepare a remote-controlled rover for exploring and drilling into the regolith in search of exploitable resources. Immediately behind the prospectors is a self-contained habitat with room and resources enough to sustain four people for several weeks. On the left and nearer to the horizon is the landing craft that delivered the four prospectors to the moon's surface, and will later return them to lunar orbit to meet with an orbiting command ship or tug. The habitat is also a lunar lander that delivered itself autonomously prior to the arrival of the prospectors. This century will likely see our return to Earth's Moon

Over 180 photographs and spectra in far - ultraviolet light were obtained showing clouds of hydrogen and other gases and several thousand stars. Permanent station between the Earth and the Moon - Artist view - Lunar cycler near Earth - Artist view - Lunar Cycler is a space station placed in orbit between Earth and Moon whose trajectory would lead it alternately near the Moon and near the Earth. Once positioned in orbit, this gravitational assistance vessel would use very little fuel. This project would make a permanent link between the two stars. The station is seen here arriving as close as possible to Earth, a space shuttle is preparing to reach it. A lunar cycler rounds the south pole of the Earth near perigee - its closest approach to the Earth - while a trailing future generation space shuttle prepares for a rendezvous. Once a lunar cycler has been propelled into its elliptical Earth/Moon orbit, it would require relatively little fuel over the ensuing years to maintain its orbit. One thing to note about a lunar cycler is that while it does continually orbit between the Earth and Moon, it is not a tug, i.e., the cycler does not add any momentum to a docking space shuttle nor to any other craft that connects to it. Any ship that docks with the cycler must itself supply the initial energy required to reach an orbit matching the cycler's.
