SolarMax Satellite Repair Mission 04/1984 - Solar Maximum Mission repair 04/1984 - View of astronaut George D.Nelson approaching the Solar Max (Solar Maximum Mission or SMM) satellite on April 8, 1984. View of the damaged Solar Maximum Mission Satellite from the 41 - C space shuttle orbiter Challenger. The satellite's solar panels are fully extended. Astronaut George D. Nelson, using the manned maneuvering unit (MMU), approaches the satellite to attempt to “” lock - on”” to it
Astronauts on Phobos - Touching Phobos - Astronauts from the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), an autonomous space chair, uncover the surface of the Phobos satellite. An astrogeologist in a space suit and manned maneuvering unit (MMU) makes the first human contact with Mars' asteroid-like moon Phobos. On the upper right is another free-ranging astrogeologist descending towards the surface. On the left at a distance of several hundred yards is an Orion-class command module. The command module has ferried the astrogeologists to Phobos from their living accommodations in Mars orbit. At 5,800 miles away Mars itself looms large, nearly filling the entire sky. Phobos' gravity is so low that its surface could be explored like scuba divers floating over the ocean's bottom

Astronaut Bruce McCandless II, mission specialist, participates in a extravehicular activity (EVA), a few meters away from the cabin of the shuttle Challenger. He is using a nitrogen - propelled hand - controlled manned maneuvering unit (MMU). He is performing this EVA without being tethered to the shuttle. Feb 11 1984

Mission Specialist Bruce McCandless II, is seen further away from the confinds and safety of his ship than any previous astronaut has ever been. This space first was made possible by the Manned Manuevering Unit or MMU, a nitrogen jet propelled backpack. After a series of test maneuvers inside and above Challengers payload bay, McCandless went “” free - flying”” to a distance of 320 feet away from the Orbiter. Feb 11 1984

SolarMax Satellite Repair Mission 04/1984 - Solar Maximum Mission repair 04/1984 - View of astronaut James Van Hoften in space shuttle Challenger hold. The astronaut participates in an extravehicular excursion to repair the Solar Max satellite (Solar Maximum Mission or SMM). 11 April 1984. Wide angle view of mission specialist James D. van Hoften participating in an extravehicular activity (EVA) to repair the “” captured” Solar Maximum Mission Satellite (SMMS) in the aft end of the Challenger's cargo bay. Astronaut van Hoften is standing in the payload bay facing the camera. The Solar SMMS is behind him. Gemini 4: release of Ed.White - Gemini 4: Ed White EVA - release of Edward White in space on June 3, 1965. June 3, 1965 Gemini 4 Edward White during first EVA performed during Gemini 4 flight Astronaut Edward H. White II, pilot for the Gemini - Titan 4 space flight, floats in zero gravity of space. The extravehicular activity was performed during the third revolution of the Gemini 4 spacecraft. White is attached to the spacecraft by a 25 - ft. umbilical line and a 23 - ft. tether line, both wrapped in gold tape to form one cord. In his right hand White carries a Hand - Held Self - Maneuvering Unit (HHSMU). The visor of his helmet is gold plated to protect him from the unfiltered rays of the sun
Gemini 4: release of Ed.White - Gemini 4: Ed White EVA - First release of an American into space made by Edward White on June 3, 1965. On June 3, 1965 Edward H. White II became the first American to step outside his spacecraft and let go, effectively setting himself adrift in the zero gravity of space. For 23 minutes White floated and maneuvered himself around the Gemini spacecraft while logging 6500 miles during his orbital walk. White was attached to the spacecraft by a 25 foot umbilical line and a 23 - ft. tether line, both wrapped in gold tape to form one cord. In his right hand White carries a Hand Held Self Maneuvering Unit (HHSMU) which is used to move about the weightless environment of space. The visor of his helmet is gold plated to protect him from the unfiltered rays of the sun
