Asteroide Vesta and other asteroides - Asteroid Vesta compared to other asteroids - Comparison of the sizes of the nine asteroides visits to date by space probes. The asteroid Vesta, with a diameter of 530 km, is the largest. This composite image shows the comparative sizes of nine asteroids. Up until now, Lutetia, with a diameter of 81 miles (130 kilometers), was the largest asteroid visited by a spacecraft, which occurred during a flyby. Vesta, which is also considered a protoplanet because it's a large body that almost became a planet, dwarfs all other small bodies in this image, with its diameter sizing up at approximately 330 miles (530 kilometers)

Impact of an asteroid on the Yucatan - Yucatan impact - Artist view - Artist view of the impact of the asteroid that would have fallen on the Yucatan peninsula about 65 million years ago. This asteroid 10 km in diameter would be responsible for the disappearance of dinosaurs. An asteroid 5-10 miles across impacts in the Yucatan to end the age of dinosaurs 65 million years ago. A fine layer of clay, rich in the element iridium - more concentrated in meteorites than in terrestrial rocks - marks the geological boundary between the Cretaceous and Tertiary eras. This clay layer is believed to have precipitated out of a plant-blanketing cloud of dust that was ejected into the atmosphere by the impact and subsequent fires. The dust darkened and cooled the earth so much that many species became extinct

Asteroide Ida seen by Galileo probe - Asteroid Ida seen by Galileo spacecraft - Mosaic of five images obtained by the Galileo probe on 28 August 1993 between 3000 and 3800 km from the asteroid. This view of the asteroid 243 Ida is a mosaic of five image frames acquired by the Galileo spacecraft's solid-state imaging system at ranges of 3,057 to 3,821 kilometers (1,900 to 2,375 miles) on August 28, 1993. Ida is the second asteroid ever encountered by a spacecraft. It appears to be about 52 kilometers (32 miles) in length, more than twice as large as Gaspra, the first asteroid observed by Galileo in October 1991
Tunguska event -Artist view-3/3 - Tunguska valley - Artist view (3/3) - Artist view of the Tungouska region a few minutes after the explosion, June 30, 1908. 2000 km of forest and taiga were destroyed, blown by the shock wave of the car. Precisely what the Tunguska Event was remains a mystery. Despite the enormous scale of the explosion, there was no impact crater. Instead some 2000 sq/kms of taiga forest was flattened like matchwood and incinerated. This is the scene some minutes after the explosion. Most of the forest has been blown away, the few remaining stumps are burning and the air is full of acrid smoke. June 30 190
Tourist at Meteor Crater - Tourist at Meteor Crater, Arizona, USA. This crater measures 1,200 metres in diameter and 180 metres in depth. It would have formed about 50,000 years ago as a result of the impact of an asteroid 30 to 50 meters in diameter. A female tourist on the rim of Meteor Crater. Meteor Crater, near Flagstaff, Arizona was formed about 50,000 years ago following the impact of a 30 to 50 meter diameter asteroid; its diameter currently stands at 1,2 km and its depth is about 180m

Occator Crater on Ceres - Occator Crater on Ceres: View of Occator crater in the northern hemisphere of the dwarf planet Ceres. Occator is 92 km wide and 4 km deep. Bright spots are visible, probably salt deposits. Mosaic of images taken by the Dawn probe. Occator Crater, home of Ceres' intriguing brightest areas, is 57 miles (92 kilometers) wide and 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) deep. Occator displays evidence of recent geologic activity. The latest research suggests that the bright material in this crater is comprised of salts left behind after a briny liquid emerged from below, froze and then sublimated, meaning it turned from ice into vapor. Mars - Atmosphere - View of Mars Planet with Argyre Basin, obtained by the Viking 1 probe in July 1976. Argyre measures 1300 km in diameter and is the second largest impact crater on Mars, after Hellas Planitia. The Argyre impact basin in the southern highlands of Mars. The basin, which is approximately 1,300 kilometers in diameter, was formed about 4 billion years ago during the Heavy Bombardment Period of the early Solar System when an asteroid or comet roughly 50 kilometers across impacted Mars. Argyre is believed to be the second - largest impact basin on Mars after Hellas Planitia and may be one of the best preserved ancient impact basins from the Heavy Bombardment Period

Asteroide Vesta seen by the Hubble Space Telescope - Asteroid Vesta - Photo obtained in visible view of the Vesta asteroid in May 1996 by the Hubble Space Telescope. The images reveal a huge impact crater 450 km in diameter south of the asteroid; the original image is at the top left, modeled in 3D on the right. Astronomers have used the Hubble Space telescope to discover a giant impact crater on the asteroid Vesta. <BR>Left is a Hubble Space Telescope image of the asteroid Vesta, taken in May 1996 when the asteroid was 110 million miles from Earth. The asymmetry of the asteroid and “” nub”” and the south pole is suggestive that it suffered a large impact event. Center is a color-encoded elevation map of Vesta that clearly shows the giant 285- mile diameter impact basin and “” bull 's-eye”” central peak. Right is a 3-D computer model of the asteroid Vesta synthesized from Hubble topographic data. The crater's 8-mile high central peak can clearly be seen near the pole. At the bottom an elevation map has been reconstructed and clearly shows in blue the large impact basin and its central peak (in red)

Leda Planitia is a plain located in the northern hemisphere of Venus. On this radar image obtained by the Magellan probe in 1991 appear in clear clear old terrain, fractures. The 40 km diameter Heloise impact crater is visible at the bottom of the picture - This false color Magellan image shows a portion of Leda Planitia (plains) in the northern hemisphere of Venus, centered at 41 degrees north latitude, 52 degrees east longitude. The area is 220 kilometers (135 miles) wide and 275 kilometers (170 miles) long. This image was produced from Magellan radar data collected in Cycle 2 of the mission. Cycle 2 was completed January 15, 1992. This image contains examples of several of the major geologic terrains on Venus and illustrates the basic stratigraphy or sequence of geologic events. The oldest terrains appear as bright, high-fractured or chaotic highlands rising out of the plains. This is seen in the upper left, or northwest, quadrant of the image. The chaotic highlands, sometimes called tessera, may represent older and thicker crustal material and occupy about 15 percent of the surface of Venus. The circular ring structure in the lower left of the image is probably an impact crater. This 40 kilometer (25 miles) diameter crater has been given a proposed name, Heloise, after the French physician who lived from about 1098 to 1164 A.D. The crater was formed by the impact of an asteroid sometime before the plains lavas embayed and covered the region. The plains surround and embay the fractured highland tessera. Plains are formed by fluid volcanic flows that may have once formed vast lava seas which covered all the low lying surfaces. Plains comprise more than 80 percent of the surface of Venus. The most recent activity in the region is volcanism that produced the radar bright flows best seen in the upper right quadrant of the image. Those flows are similar to the darker plains volcanics, but apparently have more rugged surfaces that more efficiently scatter t
Cratere Manicouagan - Quebec - January 2014 - The Manicouagan Impact Crater reservoir in Quebec, Canada - Cratere d'impact Manicouagan, Quebec, seen from the International Space Station (ISS) on January 2, 2014. This 100-kilometre crater formed 212 million years ago, following the fall of an asteroid on Earth. One of the Expedition 38 crew members aboard the Earth - orbiting International Space Station recorded this image which features the Manicouagan Crater and reservoir located primarily in Manicouagan Regional County Municipality in the Cote - Nord region of Quebec, Canada. Scientists believe the crater was caused by the impact of a 5 kilometer (3 mile) diameter asteroid about 215.5 million years ago (Triassic Period). The crater is a multiple - ring structure about 100 kilometers (60 miles) across, with its 70 kilometer (40 mile) diameter inner ring as its most prominent feature; it contains a 70 kilometer (40 mile) diameter annular lake, the Manicouagan Reservoir, surrounding an inner island plateau, Rene - Levasseur Island. Because it is so unique and easily recognizable from the sky and space, the crater has been the subject of hundreds of images from astronauts for 45 - plus years. 2 Jan 2014

Cratere Manicouagan - Quebec - March 2008 - The Manicouagan Impact Crater reservoir in Quebec, Canada - Cratere d'impact Manicouagan, Quebec, seen from the International Space Station (ISS) in March 2008. This 100-kilometre crater formed 212 million years ago, following the fall of an asteroid on Earth. The reservoir, a large annular lake, marks the site of an impact crater 60 miles (100 kilometers) wide. Formed almost 212 million years ago when a large meteorite hit Earth, the crater has been worn down by many advances and retreats of glaciers and other processes of erosion. Seen here from the International Space Station (ISS) in March 2008

Impact on the Moon seen from primitive Earth - Asteroid Impact on the Moon seen from primitive Earth: An asteroid hits the Moon forming one of the largest impact crateres of the solar system, the Aitken Basin, at the southern pole of the Moon (2500 km in diameter, 13 km in depth). The date of this impact is uncertain, probably just over three billion years ago. On Earth, the first algae grow - An asteroid impact, perhaps the largest endured by the moon since the little splat, created the South Pole Aitkens Basin, one of the largest impact structures in the solar system. The date of the impact is uncertain: it might have occurred only a little over 3 billion years ago. If so, from the earth - where primitive algae would have been the only witness - the impact would have been an impressive sight
