Earth at the end of Permian - Ring arcs over the Permian Earth - A ring of rocks and dust is orbiting the Earth. The massive continent below is Pangee and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is what Earth was supposed to look like at the end of Permian, about 260 million years ago, before the first dinosaurs appeared. This ring around the Earth was of earthly origin, constitutes debris thrown into orbit by collision with a meteorite or comet. Over time, these debris have either fallen or fallen back to Earth in a meteorite rain. A dusty ring arc orbits four thousand miles above Earth's equator. The massive continent below is Pangea and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is how the Earth may have appeared during the end of the Permian period, a time just prior to the appearance of the dinosaurs, when continental drift was pulling Pangea apart into the seven continents we know today. 260 million years ago the Earth may have been host to ring arcs similar to the incomplete rings that currently circumscribe the planet Neptune. Unlike Neptune's rings, the ring arcs around the Earth were of terrestrial origin, debris thrown into orbit by a collision with a large meteorite or comet. The debris consisted of tiny pebbles that were once molten droplets of ejecta, long since cooled in the vacuum of space. The orbit of the ring arc would eventually decay, returning the debris back to Earth as a shower of meteorites. This debris is found on Earth's surface today in the form of dark, glassy objects known as tektites
Space debris - Artist view - Space debris - Artist view - Approximately 11,000 objects over 10 cm have been identified around the Earth. Most of these debris is in low orbit. The number of debris between 10 cm and 1 cm in diameter, greater than 100,000; particles less than 1 cm must exceed 10 million. Approximately 11,000 objects larger than 10 cm are known to exist around the Earth. The estimated population of particles between 1 and 10 cm in diameter is greater than 100,000. The number of particles smaller than 1 cm probably exceeds tens of millions
Apollo 11: Decollage of Saturn V - Apollo 11 launch July 16 1969 - Decollage of the Saturn V/Apollo 11 rocket. 16/07/1969. The huge, 363 - feet tall Apollo 11 (Spacecraft 107/Lunar Module 5/Saturn 506) space vehicle is launched from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, Kennedy Space Center (KSC), at 9:32 a.m. (EDT), July 16, 1969. Aboard the Apollo 11 spacecraft were astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, command module pilot; and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot. Apollo 11 is the United States' first lunar landing mission. This view of the liftoff was taken by a camera mounted on the mobile launch tower. While astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin descend in the Lunar Module (LM) “” Eagle””” to explore the Sea of Tranquility region of the moon, astronaut Collins will remain with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) “” Columbia””” in lunar orbit

A ring of rocks and dust is orbiting the Earth. Over time, these debris have fallen or fallen to Earth in a meteorite rain - A dusty ring arc orbits four thousand miles above Earth's equator. The massive continent below is Pangea and the ocean to the west is Panthalassa. This is how the Earth may have appeared during the end of the Permian period, a time just prior to the appearance of the dinosaurs, when continental drift was pulling Pangea apart into the seven continents we know today - 260 million years ago the Earth may have been host to ring arcs similar to the incomplete rings that currently circumscribe the planet Neptune . This debris is found on Earth's surface today in the form of dark, glassy objects known as tektites.: La Terre à la fin du Permien - Ring arcs over the Permian Earth

The cloud of Oort - Illustration - The Oort cloud. Artwork - The Oort Cloud is a vast body envelope orbiting well beyond the orbit of the planets of the solar system. Comets would come from that cloud. The Oort Cloud is a huge spherical cloud surrounding our Solar System. Extending about 30 trillion kilometers (18 trillion miles) from the Sun, it was first proposed in 1950 by Dutch astronomer Jan Oort. The vast distance of the Oort cloud is considered to be the outer edge of the Solar System where the Sun's influence ends. It contains billions of icy bodies and seems to be the birth place of comets

Mars and Deimos - Illustration - Mars and Deimos - Illustration - Artist's view of Deimos, the smallest of Mars's two satellites. This is how Mars and its even smaller satellite Deimos might appear from a distance of about 100 miles from the surface of Deimos. Deimos is over Acidalia Planitia, an albedo feature that has been observed by Earth - bound astronomers since the 19th century. To the southwest are the fog - filled canyons of Valles Marineris, the westernmost of which are still in darkness. Beyond Mars, immediately to the left of its night side, is Phobos at a distance of 20,000 miles. The two bright objects in the lower left are the stars Beta Gruis and Al Nair in the southern constellation Grus. Like it's larger companion Phobos, Deimos does not possess enough mass to pull itself into a sphere; its shape instead is oblong with a length of about 10 miles and only 6 miles wide at its smallest dimension. Like Phobos, Deimos may be an asteroid long ago captured by Mars' gravity. Orbiting 14,600 miles above Mars' surface, Deimos completes one revolution every 30 hours
The Earth 650 million years ago - Artist's view - Snowball Earth - The Earth seen in a period of glaciation (Varanger glaciation), about 650 to 630 million years ago. This is how the Earth may have appeared about 650 million years ago during a period when snow and ice may have covered most, if not all, of the Earth's surface and oceans. This image suggests the Earth's appearance during the Marinoan glaciation from 650 to 630 million years ago. The southern and eastern hemispheres are dominated by glacier - covered land masses while the opposing hemisphere is frozen ocean save for a few areas of exposed liquid water, AKA refugia for the Earth's surviving soft - bodied multicellular organisms. In addition to the Marinoan glaciation there may have been at least two, and possibly three previous Proterozoic glacial periods going back to two billion years ago. The causes of these snowball periods are unknown but may have been due to massive volcanic eruptions, massive meteoritic impacts (both resulting in global sun - reflecting ash clouds), or variance's in the Earth's orbit

A Day on Io - 5/6 - Illustration - A Day on Io - 5/6 - Artwork: Io always points the same face towards Jupiter during his orbit and like the Moon from Earth, Jupiter presents different phases to him. This series of images shows the landscape changing in a day from a point in the northern hemisphere of Io-5. Ten and a half hours later, the sun set on the horizon of Io. Jupiter is in his last quarter phase. In the distance, a volcano erupts and the gases emitted into the thin atmosphere of Io illuminate in the magnetic field surrounding Jupiter and Io - Io keeps the same face towards Jupiter as it orbits the planet. For this reason, Jupiter appears to hang motionless in Io's sky. Just as the Earth's Moon does, Jupiter goes through phases as Io orbits it. Here's a gallery showing the view from a location in the northern hemisphere during the course of a single day - 5. Ten and a half hours later and the sun has now set below Io's horizon. Jupiter is in its last quarter phase. A distant volcano has begun erupting and the gasse it is releasing into IO's thin atmosphere are glowing in the dense radiation field that surrounds Jupiter and Io
Satellite Galileo - Artist view - Galileo Satellite - Artist view - Galileo Full Operational Capability (FOC) satellite artist view. The Galileo network of European satellites will consist of 30 satellites at approximately 24,000 km of altitude (27 operationals, 3 reserve). The working nucleus of Galileo, Europe's independent satellite navigation system, is already in place and active. The first satellites in space and a world - spanning ground segment have come together to perform the very first solely European navigation fixes, and validate the design of the Galileo system. To turn Galileo into something that everyone can use freely comes down to expanding its scale: for receivers to fix location a minimum of four satellites must be visible for anywhere on the planet, which means launching many more satellites and expanding Galileo's ground infrastructure. The complete Galileo constellation will consist of 30 satellites along three orbital planes in medium Earth orbit (including two spares per orbit). The result will be Europe's largest ever fleet of satellites, operating in the new environment of medium - Earth orbit

Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR - Earth seen by satellite DSCOVR: Earth photo obtained by satellite Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) on July 6, 2015. This satellite, launched on 11 February 2015, and placed in orbit 1.6 million km, at the point of Lagrange L1 (about 4 times farther than the Moon's orbit), provides views of the Earth as a whole - The journey has been a long one for the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR). Once known as Triana, the satellite was conceived in 1998 to provide continuous views of Earth, to monitor the solar wind, and to measure fluctuations in Earth's albedo. The mission was put on hold in 2001, and the part-built satellite ended up in storage for several years with an uncertain future. In 2008, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA, and the U.S. Air Force decided to refurbish and update the spacecraft for launch - On February 11, 2015, DSCOVR was finally lofted into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. After journey of about 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) to the L1 Lagrange Point, the satellite and its Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) has returned its first view of the entire sunlit side of Earth. At L1-four times farther than the orbit of the Moon - the gravitational pull of the Sun and Earth cancel out, providing a stable orbit and a continuous view of Earth. The image above was made by combining information from Epic's red, green, and blue bands. (Bands are narrow regions of the electromagnetic spectrum to which a remote sensing instrument responds. When EPIC collects data, it takes a series of 10 images at different bands - from ultraviolet to near infrared.)
Rocket Ariane 5 GS - 12/2009 - Ariane 5 GS liftoff - 12/2009 - Decolving the Ariane 5 GS rocket with the military satellite Helios - 2B on board. Flight V193 was launched on 18 December 2009. On 18 December 2009, an Ariane 5 GS launcher lifted off from Europe's Spaceport in English Guiana on a journey to place the French military reconnaissance satellite Helios - 2B into Sun - synchronous polar orbit. Flight V193 was the seventh Ariane 5 launch of 2009 and used the last of the GS variant of the launcher. Liftoff of the 49th Ariane 5 mission took place at 17:26 CET/Paris (16:26 UTC; 13:26 English Guiana). The satellite was accurately injected into its target orbit about 59 minutes later. The payload mass for this launch was 5954 kg; the satellite mass was 4200 kg, with payload adapters and dispensers making up the additional 1754 kg
