Martian Landscape - Illustration - Martian landscape - Illustration: In the sky the satellites Phobos and Deimos
Terraformation de Mars-Illustration - Terraforming of Mars - Illustration - In 1000 years, the inhabitants of the cites under the dome of Phobos will be able to contemplate the Martian oceans from their balconies. The terraforming of a planet, moon or other body, is the hypothetical process of deliberately modifying its atmosphere, temperature, or ecology to be similar to those of Earth in order to make it habitable by humans. Inhabitants of Phobos would gaze martian oceans in the next thousand years
Mars and Deimos - Illustration - Mars and Deimos - Illustration - Artist's view of Deimos, the smallest of Mars's two satellites. This is how Mars and its even smaller satellite Deimos might appear from a distance of about 100 miles from the surface of Deimos. Deimos is over Acidalia Planitia, an albedo feature that has been observed by Earth - bound astronomers since the 19th century. To the southwest are the fog - filled canyons of Valles Marineris, the westernmost of which are still in darkness. Beyond Mars, immediately to the left of its night side, is Phobos at a distance of 20,000 miles. The two bright objects in the lower left are the stars Beta Gruis and Al Nair in the southern constellation Grus. Like it's larger companion Phobos, Deimos does not possess enough mass to pull itself into a sphere; its shape instead is oblong with a length of about 10 miles and only 6 miles wide at its smallest dimension. Like Phobos, Deimos may be an asteroid long ago captured by Mars' gravity. Orbiting 14,600 miles above Mars' surface, Deimos completes one revolution every 30 hours
Exploration of Mars-Illustration - Exploring Mars - Artist view - Astronauts explore an ancient river bed on Mars. In the sky the satellites of Mars, Phobos and Deimos. Astronauts set up Mars base at edge of ancient river valley

Terraformation de Mars - Illustration - Terraformed Mars - Illustration: Terraformation aims to transform the natural environment of a planet, a moon or another body, in order to bring together the conditions for a life of an earthly type, which is therefore habitable by man. The terraforming of a planet, moon or other body, is the hypothetical process of deliberately modifying its atmosphere, temperature, or ecology to be similar to those of Earth in order to make it habitable by humans. Here, astronauts on Phobos are watching martian oceans
Crab Pulsar in Nebula M1 - The Crab pulsar: This false-colored image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope shows the central region of the Crab Nebula or resides its pulsar. The pulsar is visible in the center of the image. It is a very dense neutron star from the explosion of a massive supernova star. This star quickly rotates on itself developing a powerful magnetic field, emitting beams of light and radio waves. M1 is located about 6000 light-years in the constellation Taurus.. In 1054 AD, during the Song dynasty, Chinese astronomers spotted a bright new star in the night sky. This newcomer turned out to be a violent explosion within the Milky Way, caused by the spectacular death of a star some 1600 light-years away. This explosion created one of the most well-studied and beautiful objects in the night sky - the Crab Nebula. The beautiful result of this cataclysmic Type II supernova is shown here, imaged by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Unlike more commonly seen views of this remnant, which show incredibly intricate branches and spires laced throughout the region, this image uses just a single filter, giving rise to a smoother and far simpler view of the famous nebula. The unstoppable collapse of the Crab's progenitor star led to the formation of a rapidly rotating neutron star named the Crab Pulsar, which lurks at the heart of the nebula. This object is roughly the same size as Mars' small moon Phobos, but contains almost one and a half times the mass of the Sun, and whirls around thirty times every second. This causes jets of high-energy radiation to periodically sweep in the direction of Earth, like the spinning beams of a lighthouse, causing the Crab Nebula to appear to pulse at specific wavelengths. The Crab Nebula is also known as NGC 1952 and Messier 1. The second of these names was assigned by Charles Messier. He initially misclassified the neb

Mars: Olympus Mons - Illustration - Artist's view of the volcano Olympus Mons on Mars. Above, in the sky, the Deimos and Phobos satellites are represented. The northwest side of Olympus Mons' 20,000 foot scarps cast long shadows into the water mist and dust - filled atmosphere over the plains of the Tharsis Bulge. In the sky immediately above Olympus Mons' caldera are, left to right, Mars' satellites Deimos and Phobos. Nearly as large as the state of Arizona and three times the height of Mount Everest, Olympus Mons is the largest volcano - - and mountain - - in the Solar System. It is thought to be very old, though its last eruption may have been as (geologically) recent as 40 million years ago. Olympus Mons may yet still be an active volcano

Phobos probe - Artist's View - Phobos spacecraft - Artist view - The Phobos program was a sovietic space mission, consisting of two probes dedicated mainly to the study of Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. Launched in 1988, both probes lost contact with Earth. Only Phobos 2 managed to get into orbit around Mars and collect data, including 38 photographs. The Phobos program was an unmanned space mission consisting of two soviet probes launched in 1988 to study Mars and its moons Phobos and Deimos. Phobos 1 had quickly a failure, Phobos 2 became a Mars orbiter and returned 38 images of the red planet
Mars - Satellite Phobos - Martian moon Phobos - View of the satellite Phobos obtained by the Mars Express probe on July 23, 2008 at a distance of 97 km from the Martian moon. The resolution is 3.7 meters per pixel. On 23 July 2008, the High Resolution Stereo Camera on board the ESA's Mars Express took the highest - resolution full - disc image yet of the surface of the moon Phobos. The image data was acquired from a distance of 97 km with a spatial resolution of about 3.7 m/pixel in orbit 5851. These images have surpassed all previous images from other missions in continuous coverage of the illuminated surface at the highest spatial resolution of 3.7 m/pixel. This image is photometrically enhanced to bring out the features in the less illuminated part

Mars: Phobos breaks apart - Illustration - Phobos breaking up to form ring - Illustration - Artist's view of Phobos, the largest of Mars's two satellites, which due to its proximity to the planet Mars will break in 20 to 50 million years. The larger pieces will crush on Mars, forming new crateres, but the smaller ones and the dust should remain in suspension, in orbit and leave all around Mars to form a ring. Phobos, one of Mars' moons, is getting closer to the planet and in several million years Phobos will break apart upon reaching the Roche limit, and become a set of rings
Phobos and Mars - Illustration - Phobos and Mars - Illustration - Artist's view of Phobos, the largest of Mars's two satellites. This is how Mars and its tiny satellite Phobos might appear from a distance of about 100 miles from Phobos' surface. Phobos is over the low martian plains of Syrtis Major. Below the plains extending down to Mars' terminator and beyond is the heavily cratered Terra Sabaea. Clouds of water - ice crystals are forming at the terminator between light and dark. Looking more like a common potato than a celestial body, Phobos is actually the larger of Mars' two satellites, with a length of about 16 miles and about 11 miles across its smallest dimension. Phobos does not have enough mass for gravity to pull it into a uniform sphere like the larger satellites and planets in the Solar System. Phobos may be an asteroid long ago captured by Mars' gravity, orbiting a mere 5,800 miles above Mars' surface, making it the closest satellite to its host planet in the Solar System. Phobos' orbit is so low that it completes one revolution in less than eight hours, easily outpacing by threefold Mars' rotation period of 24 hours, 40 minutes. The resulting tidal forces are causing Phobos' altitude to decay at the relatively rapid rate of 6 feet per century; in about 50 million years Phobos will either crash into the martian surface, or be torn apart by Mars' gravity

Phobos mission approaching Phobos - The control module in approach to the Phobos satellite. The command module, now free of the larger Phobos mission rocket, begins a close approach to Phobos. With an average diameter of less than 12 miles, irregularly shaped Phobos has a very weak gravitational field making it relatively easy for the command module to come very close without being drawn all the way to its surface. The goal is to come close enough to permit space-suited astrogeologists equipped with personal manned maneuvering units (MMUS) to act as mini-spaceships themselves and descend to the surface. On the surface of Mars to the right can be seen Elysium Planitia and the volcano Albor Tholus

Mission to Phobos - Phobos mission prepares for Phobos approach - As the spacecraft arrived in orbit around Phobos, the control module separates to move closer to the small satellite. With the Phobos mission rocket in a stable orbit near Phobos (upper right), the command module departs so that it may approach to within a few hundred yards of the martin moon. Below on Mars can be seen Meridiani Planum where Nasa's Opportunity rover landed in 2004, while it's sunset over Ganges and Eos chasmata
Mission to Phobos - Phobos mission ready for departure - A spaceship assemblies in Earth orbit is ready to depart to Phobos, one of Mars's satellites. This ship consists of several fuel tanks and an Orion-type space capsule with three astronauts on board. No landing gear is required because the mass of Phobos is so low that this satellite can be approached by astronauts in extravehicular exit. A complete rocket system for delivering a crew of three to Mars' moon Phobos and returning them to the Earth. The vast bulk of the rocket is propellant divided into stages that are each released in turn as the mission progresses. On the far right are the crew accomodations and an attached Orion class command module. No dedicated lander is required as Phobos' mass is so low that it could be easily approached by the command module and explored by suited astrogeologists in Manned Maneuvering Units (MMUS)
Mars: shadow of Phobos - Shadow of moon Phobos on martian surface - View of the shadow of Phobos satellite on Mars. Image obtained by the Mars Express probe on November 10, 2005. Recolorated image. On 10 November 2005, the camera experiment on Mars Express, the High Resolution Stereo Camera, obtained images of the shadow of the Martian moon Phobos as it moved across the surface. The shadow of Phobos has an elliptical shape on the Martian surface, because the shadow's cone hits the surface under an oblique angle
Astronauts on Phobos - Touching Phobos - Astronauts from the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), an autonomous space chair, uncover the surface of the Phobos satellite. An astrogeologist in a space suit and manned maneuvering unit (MMU) makes the first human contact with Mars' asteroid-like moon Phobos. On the upper right is another free-ranging astrogeologist descending towards the surface. On the left at a distance of several hundred yards is an Orion-class command module. The command module has ferried the astrogeologists to Phobos from their living accommodations in Mars orbit. At 5,800 miles away Mars itself looms large, nearly filling the entire sky. Phobos' gravity is so low that its surface could be explored like scuba divers floating over the ocean's bottom
