Mir station 01/1997 - Mir station seen from the shuttle Atlantis before docking 01/1997 - Mir space station seen from the shuttle Atlantis approaching for mooring. 14/01/1997. In the upper center: a Progress ship, the Kvant module - and the central module; centre left: the Priroda module; centre right: the Spektr module; bottom left: the Kvant module - 2; centre low: a Soyuz ship; bottom right, the Kristall module and the mooring module. This is a view of the Russian Mir Space Station photographed by a crewmember of the fifth Shuttle/Mir docking mission, STS-81. The image shows: upper center - Progress supply vehicle, Kvant - 1 module, and Core module; center left - Priroda module; center right - Spektr module; bottom left - Kvant - 2 module; bottom center - Soyuz; and bottom right - Kristall module and Docking module. The Progress was an unmarned, automated version of the Soyuz crew transfer vehicle, designed to resupply the Mir. The Kvant - 1 provided research in the physics of galaxies, quasars, and neutron stars, by measuring electromagnetic spectra and x - ray emissions. The Core module served as the heart of the space station and contained the primary living and working areas, life support, and power, as well as the main computer, communications, and control equipment. Priroda's main purpose was Earth remote sensing. The Spektr module provided Earth observation. It also supported research into biotechnology, life sciences, materials science, and space technologies. American astronauts used the Spektr as their living quarters. Kvant - 2 was a scientific and airlock module, providing biological research, Earth observations, and EVA (extravehicular activity) capability. The Soyuz typically ferried three crewmembers to and from the Mir. A main purpose of the Kristall module was to develop biological and materials production technologies in the space environment. The Docking module made it possible for the Space Shuttle to dock easily with the Mir.
Jet stream over Canada - Jet stream over Canada - Jet stream over Cape Breton Island, Canada, seen by Space Shuttle Discovery in May 1991. The Northern Hemisphere Jet Stream can be seen crossing Cape Breton Island in the Maritime Provinces of Eastern Canada. The Jet Stream is a narrow zone of high - speed winds typically found at altitudes of 4 to 8 miles (8 - 12 km) above the earth. They result from temperature contrasts between polar and tropical regions. The strongest Jet Stream winds are found in the winter when the contrast between polar and tropical regions is the greatest. Wind speeds can reach 90 to over 180 miles per hour (145 to over 290 km/h) from west to east. During the winter months over the United States and southern Canada, the path taken by the Jet Stream can have a large influence on the weather conditions of this region. THE FIRST FEMME OF SPACE TOURIST. (30/09/2006) (Photos: JSC/NASA/Bill Ingalls) Here is her short biography: she is first a businesswoman, she was co-founder of Telecom Tecnologies Inc. She's very involved in telecoms and in the space where she makes a fortune. She was born in 1967 and migrated to the USA in 1984, she is an engineer in electronics and computer science, she speaks very well in French. She's married, so you astronauts have no hope!. She paid $20 million to take part in this trip. With the STS115 finally arrived on 21 September 2006, the public's attention could finally turn to shipment 14 to the ISS, which had already started BA¿Konour for a few days (launched on 18 September 2006 and docking on the 20). Indeed, this expedition as the Americans call the missions to the ISS presents two new ones: the Japanese tourist Daisuke Enomota did not get the OK for his departure from Soyuz, he did not pass all medical tests (let's not forget that the flight in Soyuz is, say, more “as well as a flight from the shuttle, both the But even tourists have backups and we are delighted to see the first woman tourist in space, a beautiful woman of Iranian origin Anousheh Ansari, 38 years old. The complete picture (when clicked) also shows the other two partners of Anoushe: Mikhail Tyurin Russian officer accustomed to long-term flights and Amur Commander Michael E. Lopez-Alegria.

Glacier Bay, Alaska - Glacier Bay in Alaska - Glacier Bay from perspective. This image is the result of joint observations made by the Landsat-7 satellite in visible and infrared, combined with elevation radar data obtained by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) in February 2000. At the bottom left of the picture, the Brady Glacier. Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve lies on the Pacific Coast of Alaska south of the St. Elias mountain range. The bay was set aside as a National Monument in 1925 and became its current National Park and Preserve in 1980, when approximately 85 percent of the park was designated a Wilderness Area. It has since been recognized as a UN Biosphere Reserve, in 1986, and a World Heritage Site, in 1992. The water in the foreground in the southwest (bottom left) corner of the image is the Gulf of Alaska, with Icy Strait running roughly west to east (horizontally) in from Cape Spencer where the strait meets the Pacific. The foreground glacier is the Brady Glacier. The light gray feature at the foot of the glacier is fine silt dropped by the glacier as it melts. The glacier's meltwater washes the silt into the Strait, coloring the shallow waters light blue as the silt mixes. The long finger of water dominating the entire scene is Glacier Bay itself. The Grand Pacific Glacier now terminates well above Tar Inlet, the finger of water stretching furthermost north (up) at the top of Glacier Bay. The first major inlet on the east (right) coming up from the mouth of Glacier Bay is Muir Inlet. The glaciers feeding into the bay terminated here around 1860. The body of water paralleling the Bay on the eastern edge is Lynn Canal, a body of water also draining into Icy Strait beyond the eastern boundary of the park. This image is a visualization created by merging imagery from the Landsat 7 satellite's Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM +) instrument with elevation data from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED).
