Comete Hale - Bopp et observers 01/04/1997 - Comet Hale - Bopp with observers 1 April 1997 - Two boys watch the Comete Hale - Bopp. Two boys watch comet Hale - Bopp on April 1st, 1997
Galactic Center Region - The Galactic Center - The Galactic Center Region of the center of our galaxy seen the Chandra, Spitzer and Hubble satellites. The galactic center (Sagittarius A*) is located in the white area in the middle to the right of the image. In yellow, near-infrared images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope; in red, infrared images obtained by the Spitzer Space Telescope; in blue and purple, X-ray observations obtained by the Chandra Space Telescope. Nasa's Great Observatories - the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory - have collaborated to produce an unprecedented image of the central region of our Milky Way galaxy. In this spectacular image, observations using infrared light and X-ray light see through the obscuring dust and reveal the intense activity near the galactic core. Note that the center of the galaxy is located within the bright white region to the right of and just below the middle of the image. The entire image width covers about one-half a degree, about the same angular width as the full moon. Each telescope's contribution is presented in a different color: - Yellow represents the near-infrared observations of Hubble. These observations outline the energetic regions where stars are being born as well as reveal hundreds of thousands of stars. - Red represents the infrared observations of Spitzer. The radiation and winds from stars create glowing dust clouds that exhibit complex structures from compact, spherical globules to long, stringy filaments. - Blue and violet represent the X-ray observations of Chandra. X-rays are emitted by gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions and by outflows from the supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center. The bright blue blob on the left side is emission from a double star system containing either a neutron star or a black hole. When these views are brought together, this composite image provides one of the most detailed

The cluster of stars Pismis 24 in the Scorpio - Pismis 24 star cluster in Scorpius - This image obtained by the Hubble space telescope shows the cluster of young stars Pismis 24, located about 8000 years - light in the nebula NGC 6357 of the Scorpio. This cluster houses a star that was thought to be the most massive star in our galaxy, between 200 and 300 solar masses (the brightest star in the top center of the image). The measurements obtained by the Hubble telescope showed that this star, Pismis 24 - 1, was actually a double star and that its mass was actually only about 100 solar masses. The small open star cluster Pismis 24 lies in the core of the large emission nebula NGC 6357 in Scorpius, about 8,000 light - years away from Earth. Some of the stars in this cluster are extremely massive and emit intense ultraviolet radiation. The brightest object in the picture is designated Pismis 24 - 1. It was once thought to weigh as much as 200 to 300 solar masses. This would not only have made it by far the most massive known star in the galaxy, but would have put it considerably above the currently believed upper mass limit of about 150 solar masses for individual stars. Hubble space telescope images of the star show that it is really two stars orbiting one another (inset pictures at top right and bottom right). They are estimated to each be 100 solar masses
The measurements obtained by the Hubble telescope showed that this star, Pismis 24 - 1, was actually a double star and that its mass was actually only about 100 solar masses. High - resolution observations from Hubble have shed light on the real mass of a star previously believed to be among the heaviest known in our Milky Way. Originally, the mass of the star was thought to be an incredible 200 - 300 solar masses, but turned out to be only 100 solar masses
Nebulae IC 1805 and IC 1848 and the double cluster of Persee - The Double Cluster and Double Nebula - The double cluster of Persee (NGC 884 and NGC 869) is visible at the top left of the image. NGC 1850 Star Cluster in Dorado - Double Cluster NGC 1850 in Dorado - The double cluster NGC 1850 is located in the galaxy of the Great Magellan Cloud. It contains a cluster of globular form, but young, 50 million years, in the center of the image and another cluster, at the bottom right, even younger (4 million years), consists of warm and blue stars and a few T - Tauri stars. NGC 1850, imaged here with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, is an unusual double cluster that lies in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way. After the 30 Doradus complex, NGC 1850 is the brightest star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It is representative of a special class of objects - young, globular - like star clusters - that have no counterpart in our own Galaxy. The two components of the cluster are both relatively young and consist of a main globular - like cluster in the centre and an even younger, smaller cluster, seen below and to the right, composed of extremely hot, blue stars and fainter red T - Tauri stars. The main cluster is about 50 million years old and the smaller cluster is only 4 million years old

Cassiopee Constellation - The constellation of Cassiopeia - Cassiopeia, was seen in mythology as the seated Queen of Ethiopia (not to be confused with the modern AEthiopia). She was the wife of Cepheus and the mother of Andromeda, beautiful but boastful. The grouping of moderately bright stars has a distinctive 'W' shape and lies in a rather faint part of the northern Milky Way. It is circumpolar for latitudes north of 50*. Occupying almost 500 square degrees of sky it is the 25th largest of the 88 modern constellations
Constellation Cassiopee - The constellation of Cassiopeia - The constellation of Cassiopeia, the Queen, is seen in this wide - angle shot spanning a field of about 16 x 24 degrees. This bright section of the Milky Way is strewn with thousands of individual stars, star clouds, dark nebulae, red emission nebulae, and glittering star clusters. As we look at Cassiopeia, we are looking out into one of the outer arms of our own Milky Way galaxy, and away from the galaxy's center in Sagittarius. The Double Cluster in Perseus (NGC 884 and NGC 869) and the Double Nebulae (IC 1805 and LBN 667) are at upper right. NGC 281, another emission nebula, is near Schedar (Alpha Cassiopeiae). IC 59 and IC 63 are two small faint nebulae near Gamma Cassiopeia, in the center of the constellation. Another very large complex of red emission nebulae, Ced 214 and NGC 7822 lie near the center of the bottom of the frame, and open cluster NGC 7789 is to the left of Caph. Open cluster M52 and NGC 7635, the Bubble Nebula, are at lower left. In mythology, Cassiopeia was married to Cepheus, the King, Their daughter was Andromeda, and her rescuer was Perseus

Blue stragglers in cluster 47 Toucan - Blue stragglers in globular cluster 47 Tucanae - This image obtained by the Hubble space telescope shows a detail of the 47 Toucan cluster near its center (the field is indicated on the left image taken from the ground). The yellow circles on the right image indicate the position of stars identified by the telescope as blue trainers. Because of the high density of stars within a globular cluster, a collision between two stars sometimes occurs, merging into a single young, bright and warm star called a blue straggler. The core of globular cluster 47 Tucanae is home to many blue stragglers, rejuvenated stars that glow with the blue light of young stars. A ground - based telescope image (on the left) shows the entire crowded core of 47 Tucanae, located 15,000 light - years away in the constellation Tucana. Peering into the heart of the globular cluster's bright core, the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 separated the dense clump of stars into many individual stars (image on right). Some of these stars shine with the light of old stars; others with the blue light of blue stragglers. The yellow circles in the Hubble telescope image highlight several of the club's blue stragglers. Astronomers theorize that blue stragglers are formed either by the slow merger of stars in a double - star system or by the collision of two unrelated stars. For the blue straggler in 47 Tucanae, astronomers favor the slow merger scenario. This photo is a three - color composite of Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 archival images taken with ultraviolet, blue, and violet filters. Green, blue, and red colors were assigned to the filters and scaled so that the red giant stars appear orange, the main sequence stars are white/green, and the blue stragglers are appropriately blue. The ultraviolet images were taken on
Massive Stars in the Carene - Massive stars in the Carina Nebula - The image shows a cluster of stars named Trumpler 16 which contains two very massive stars, WR 25 at Tr16 - 244. WR 25 is the brightest star on the image. It is a double star composed of a star at least 50 times more massive than the Sun. Tr16 - 244 is the third brightest star in this image (top left of WR 25). It's a triple star. The second bright star in the image, to the left of WR 25, is a small star, which does not belong to this cluster and is located much closer to us. The Carene Nebula is located about 7500 years from Earth

Interacting galaxies NGC 3256 - Interacting galaxies NGC 3256 - The special galaxy NGC 3256 is located about 100 million light years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Sails. A vestige of the collision of two galaxies, this system presents a double nucleus and many young clusters of stars. Image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope on November 5, 2001. NGC 3256 is an impressive example of a peculiar galaxy that is actually the relict of a collision of two separate galaxies that took place in a distant past. The telltale signs of the collision are two extended luminous tails swirling out from the galaxy. NGC 3256 belongs to the Hydra - Centaurus supercluster complex and provides a nearby template for studying the properties of young star clusters in tidal tails. The system hides a double nucleus and a tangle of dust lanes in the central region. The tails are studded with a particularly high density of star clusters. Image taken by the Hubble space telescope on November 5, 2001
Andromede and Triangle Constellations - Constellations of Andromeda and Triangulum - The constellation of Andromede begins at the brilliant star Alpheratz, or Alpha Andromedae, one of the corners of the great square of Pegase. Alpheratz is the brightest star in the picture, on the right, and is located about 97 light years away from Earth. Mirach star, in the center of the image, is a giant red star situated about 200 years ago - light. The galaxy of Andromede, M31, is visible at the top of the picture. At the bottom of the mage, in the middle, the galaxy M33. The large open cluster NGC 752 is at the bottom left. The constellations of Andromeda, the Princess, and Triangulum, the Triangle, point the way to several deep - sky delights in the fall sky. Andromeda begins at the bright star Alpheratz, or Alpha Andromedae, one of the corners of the great square of Pegasus. Alpheratz is the brightest star in the image, near the right side of the frame and is located about 97 light years away from us on Earth. The constellation includes the bright stars Mirach (Beta Andromedae) and Almach (Gamma Andromedae). Mirach is a red giant star located about 200 light years away. Almach can be seen as a beautiful blue and gold double star in telescopes and is located about 355 light years away. Mirach, and Mu Andromedae above it, point the way to the Andromeda Galaxy, M31. The great galaxy in Andromeda can be seen with the unaided eye from a dark location as a faint smudge of light. It is one of the farthest objects that can be seen with the unaided eye at a distance of about 2.5 million light years. Drawing a line from M31 to Mirach, and extending this line about the same distance past Mirach, we find the Pinwheel Galaxy, M33, at bottom center. The large open cluster NGC 752 is at lower left. The distinctive triangular shape of the constellation of Triangulum can be seen at the lower left of the image

Nebulae IC 1848 and IC 1805 in Cassiopee - The north is at top. IC1848 nebula and the star cluster embedded in it are located just 4 degrees north of h Persei, one of the two members of the famous Double Cluster. The same nebula also hosts Collinder 33 (Cr33) and Collinder 34 (Cr34) star clusters. The faint nebulae IC1871 and Sh2 - 198 are just near the IC1848. Just one and a half degree north - west from IC1848 is located the IC1805 complex. This rich but faint nebular complex resides 5* NNE of the Double Cluster in Perseus. The largest and very diffuse part of it, IC1805, contains large and bright star cluster Melotte 15 at its center. Other star clusters (NGC1027, Berkeley 65 and Markarian 6) are located around its edges. The brightest part of IC1805 complex consists of nebulae IC1795 and NGC896 which together are intersected by narrow NW to SE streaks of dust. Also the two Maffei galaxies are included in this view at bottom center. This image is based on data acquired by the Oschin Telescope at the Mount Palomar Observatory
Sky horizon to horizon - Light pollution is visible on both horizons. The star Sirius is reflected in the sea. Higher, the constellations of Orion, and the Bull with the Pleiades. Near the zenith, a shooting star claws the sky not far from the round spot of Holmes comet right in Persee. Towards the other horizon, the double cluster of Persee, the Andromede Galaxy, the nebula North America (very low in light pollution) and finally the Lyre near the horizon. 16 November 2007, Combrit (Finistere). The light pollution is visible above both horizons. Sirius has just risen and reflects itself in the sea. Higher, are constellations of Orion, the Taurus with Pleiades. Near the zenith, a meteor scratches the sky near the round patch of Comet Holmes in the heart of Perseus. Down to the other horizon: the double Perseus Cluster, Great Andromeda galaxy, North America nebula (hard to spot in the light pollution) and constellation of Lyra near the horizon. Constellation of Hercules - Constellation of Hercules - Constellation of Hercules and Boreal Crown. On the left, the bright star is Vega de la Lyre. Hercules, the Roman Hero, is best known for his twelve labours, mentioned throughout the Greek constellation legends as Herakles, who is sometimes identified with the much older (5000 BC) Sumerian strong man Gilgamesh. To the Greeks he was the son of Zeus and the earthly queen Alkmene. Zeus' goddess wife Hera was not best pleased and sought to destroy Herakles. Later he was to accomplish eight heroic acts as well as his famous 12 labours, these last perhaps representing the Sun's passage through the zodiacal constellations. The constellation is the fifth largest in the sky but does not catch the eye and has no bright stars rivaling Vega in adjoining Lyra or even the much fainter Gemma in Corona Borealis to the west. However, there are many interesting double stars in Hercules as well as the northern hemisphere's finest globular cluster M13

The cluster of stars Pismis 24 in the Scorpio - Pismis 24 star cluster in Scorpius - This image shows the cluster of young stars Pismis 24, located about 8000 years - light in the nebula NGC 6357 of the Scorpio. This cluster is home to some of the most massive stars known to date. Image made with the 1.5m Danish telescope of La Silla in Chile in 2009. Located near the famous “” Cat Paw”” nebula (NGC 6334), the Stellar Cluster Pismis 24 lies at the core of NGC 6357. Its stars include some of the most massive stellar behemoths known. One of the brightest stars in the cluster, Pismis 24 - 1, was thought possibly to be the most massive on record, approaching 300 solar masses, until it was discovered by the Hubble Telescope to be a triple star, with large components exceeding 100 solar masses. Several of the other central stars also exceed 100 solar masses. The nebulosity visible in the image shows the effects of intense radiation which has sculpted the clouds into curious shapes. Massive protostars, invisible to optical telescopes, lie hidden within the gas and dust of the region. Image taken with the ESO/Danish 1.5m telescope at La Silla observatory in Chile
